  • In 1986, US F-14 Tomcats Outmaneuvered MiG-25 Foxbats.
On March 24th, 1986, three US Navy warships were ordered to cross what Libya claimed as its territorial water. They did it under the air cover of F-14 Tomcats. The Libyan Air Force sent two MiG-25 Foxbats to deal with them. As per one of the MiG pilots, he knew about the F-14's long-range Phoenix missiles. So, he decided not to be involved in long-range engagement. The F-14s knew the intent of MiGs, but rules of engagement didn't allow them to fire first, so they took the MiGs to a lower altitude, where the F-14s had extreme maneuverability. They got right behind them at 6 o'clock and asked for permission; however, by the time permission arrived, the MiGs had already left for the base.

You can't just "claim" what waters belong to you, international maritime law determines that a country's waters they can claim as their own ends at a certain distance from their shores and that's where international waters start, and it's the same distance for every country, just because Muammar Gaddafi drew a line from one point of land to the other and claimed all the waters inside that line doesn't make it so, if the US did that you'd be the first one quoting international maritime laws that say otherwise, but Gaddafi does it and it's OK.
