F1 fans scream as they watch Zhou Guanyu car crash towards them at British Grand Prix. F1 drivers George Russell and Zhou Guanyu crashed into each other on the opening lap of the Formula One British Grand Prix. The Chinese driver's car flipped over several times before crashing and it looked like he could be seriously hurt. However, he quickly received attention on the track and his Alfa Romeo team soon confirmed that he was OK. Formula One fans also praised the halo as one of the best inventions in the sport after it saved Zhou's life.

Halos were controversially made mandatory by FIA in 2018, with Lewis Hamilton describing it as 'the worst looking mod in F1 history'. But it has since saved the lives of many drivers, including Hamilton when he was involved in a crash with title rival Max Verstappen last year.

Interesting that we had no fatalities for multiple decades and then suddenly when the halo comes it's saving lives.

I think that's debatable. For one thing there's the theory that halos make drivers feel safer and therefore less risk averse. In this instance the halo actually caused Zhou to slide while upside down at speed rather than flipping numerous times until a quicker stop. While the latter may seem more dangerous, we've never seen such incidents cause a fatality.
Also, the Hamilton incident is also debatable. It was a slow incident albeit potentially dangerous - but no-one can categorically say it saved his life.

@@tonberrykinged Sure, but the Leclerc tyre incident would have ripped his head off.
Then Grosjean crash. He would've went head first into the upper rail of a safety barrier. There's no other way to say it, but if it wasn't for the halo that day. He'd have died on impact.

@@Karlmcewan Yeah you're right on those two. Except, the Grosjean crash should never have been serious - it was the design of the barrier that was the problem. It's a difficult one for me. Noone wants to see drivers killed. But I still dislike the halo and I'm worried about what the future of F1 will look like. Completely closed cockpits? The end of Au Rouge? I think we have to accept a certain level of danger or risk losing the sport entirely.

Didn't hear them screaming when they saw the car coming towards them, to me it sounded more like when he was coming round the far corner. But anyway, I'm sure the driver was screaming as he was speeding upside down along the ground 🤔

the silence of the crowd showed the seriousness of this sport. we have lost a young kid to this sport not too long ago but i'm glad the safety is the number 1 priority of these cars. glad Gaunyu is okay.
