I was at this game driving up from Atlanta. We were exhausted and hoarse by the end of the 1st quarter. Didn't sit down until halftime. What a great game.
What a physical game with great athletes and future pros, like Amp Lee, Marvin Jones and Terrell Buckley from FSU. Elvis Grbac, Desmond Howard, Erick Anderson and Tyrone Wheatley to name a few. The crowd was awesome in the Big House!! FSU had a shitty kicking game in this game. Bowden never recruited great kickers, besides Scott Bentley. Wide right 2.0 had to sting, as well. That TD catch by D. Howard beating tight coverage by T. Buckley was a beauty!! Overall, a great physical and exciting game by 2 great programs. I'm home cuarantined by the Coronavirus, so I'm watching past great games.
Bowden did recruit Sebastian Janikowski, Dustin Hopkins, and Graham Gano. Going back a little ways, he had Derek Schmidt. For whatever reason, Dan Mowry, who was highly recruited, just did not pan out for FSU.
Thank you for posting this insane game. I remember watching it live 30 years ago. Incredibly, despite allowing 7 TD's to that point and only scoring 4 (plus one FG), Michigan was still in the game late thanks to FSU's inability to make extra points. It took TD #8 to finally ice the game.
For the younger fans who only remember the Bobby from 2000 and up they really missed some legendary coaching. After that 99 season he just let his coordinators take more and more control. Plus age changes everyone.
Yeah, man, you're not kidding. Those early 90's-2000's Seminole teams were great, loaded with players every year. I'm actually an LSU fan, but I remember those FSU teams were no damn joke
This. Me too man. It was painful and my parents couldn't pick us up til the end so we just sat there as kids watching our team get buried worse and worse lol
You can tell this was before the BCS and college football playoff because there's no way a team is scheduling a top 3 on the road in today's college football. They only do those on a netraul field.
And this is where conference expansion and the conference championship game era played a huge role in athletic directors dumbing down non-conference scheduling during the regular season. Instead of FSU/Michigan we get FSU/Troy or Michigan/Ball St.
Florida State in the 90's was pure hell to play. Would play anyone, anywhere, which is partially the reason they didn't win more than 2 NC's in that decade. Consistently had the toughest schedule in the country and had to play BOTH Miami and Florida annually. The nerve of Miami or Florida calling themselves Florida "state" champions when they didn't play each other. Either lost to Miami or Florida and out of the NC picture - so unfair. That and Florida State didn't have a consistently good kicker to save its ever-lovin life!
I think if you count up all the missed opportunities by both teams, 🤔 Florida State still wins 63-62 !! Hey, with FSU joining the Big Ten in '25, you'll see them in the Big House again soon ! 🏈😀
One thing I will always remember about this game was the placekicking! The kicker for Florida state, whoever it was, had a horrible game. And I remember Bobby Bowden after the game mentioned that they need a better job from their kicker. As we all know the kicking game would come back to doom them later in the season!
This was my first ever exposure to football. I was 9. My uncle was like boy sit down and let’s watch this game. It’s important. Then second play of game….🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😂😂😂😂😂. As a Michigan fan since that day …those Seminoles teams were legit
It’s crazy how if FSU just had a smidge more luck in 91,92,97,98 those could and maybe even “should” be natty teams. 91 & 92 the missed FGs against Miami, 97 that damn gator comeback, 98 Weinke getting hurt. Maybe even argue 96? If it wasn’t for the SEC championship game I don’t think a super motivated UF team gets their rematch in the title game. People say Nebraska was the team of the 90s, but I truly believe even though I’m a biased FSU fan it was FSU were in the title game 4 years of the 90s, 3 straight if you wanna include 98,99,00. And was a game away from the title game in 2 or 3 of the other years.
FSU would’ve added at least 2 more championships if there was a playoff back then. At least! On the flip side, Miami might’ve added another couple as well
Flashbacks to the awful kickers at fsu thats what i saw. If Bobby had a kicker on those teams he would have won more than just 2 chips. Good trip down memory lane. Amp lee was something. Go Noles!
Florida State refused to kick the ball to Desmond Howard... they respected his explosiveness. Michigan was also playing without injured All American Derrick Alexander.
Bobby made that no huddle and everyday thing in college ball and proved the shotgun could be done at a major college now its done in,the pros when they all told Bobby it couldn't be done. Back in,the day,,
Out of the 10 starting O-Lineman between FSU and Michigan, only 1 was over 300 lbs. I seriously doubt either of these teams today have any second-string linemen less than 300. Was that #17 who threw the halfback pass at 6:35 Charlie Ward?
Thought Michigan was hot coming into this game after they beat Notre Dame. 2 things I got from watching this game live 30 years ago was Michigan was gonna lose to any team quicker then them and Florida State's kicking game was a red flag somewhere down the road.
FSU was definitely much faster, but I think another key factor is that Lloyd Carr got schooled. The overall defensive gameplan and also a few situational calls were very foolish.
Jess Kelley it’s a tough, close call between the three. 91 team averaged 34.5 p/g and allowed only 14.5 p/g while playing 6 ranked teams, 5 of them in the top ten. 92 averaged 37.2 p/g while allowing 15.5 p/g and played 7 ranked teams, 2 in the top ten. 97 team averaged 39 p/g and allowed only 15.1 p/g while playing 6 ranked teams, 3 in the top ten.
It's pretty sad the Michigan team I grew up and started watching and the Michigan team we see now. Were too soft of a football team now days and player development dosent exist that much
@Rosco P. Coltrane that's exactly what fsu was too. Going on the road no less and beating traditional powers from every top conference. I miss the pre ACC days.
Desmond Howard's first TD catch of the game was trapped off the ground. It wouldn't have counted as a TD if they had video replay then, and it sure wouldn't be a TD by today's standards. I thought FSU could've won this game by a much bigger margin, but they played a bit undisciplined which, unfortunately, was one of the main reasons FSU didn't win more NC's during its' 14 year run of Top 5 finishes.
Stop writing crap. FSU did not win more National Championships because the Miami Hurricanes were at their peak and also because in the 90's Steve Spurrier's Gators were by far the best team in the SEC in that decade. @@capitanfuturo594 FSU lost to Miami because they missed a chip shot FG as time ran out. Miami did not deserve to win that game - they got extremely lucky. Miami was decent but 1991 was not one of their best teams. Both the 1987 and 2001 teams would have killed the 91 Canes.
That was an all world catch on the best defensive back in the country. He had them spectacular catches all season, which is why he was the Heisman trophy winner. Desmond Howard was the most explosive player I ever saw in college football.
