1997 FSU @ Florida - "The Greatest Game Ever Played in The Swamp"

- 11/22/97 - #10 Florida 32, #1 FSU 29. The Noles came into this game unbeaten, ranked #1 nationally and favorites over the Gators, who lost the SEC East for the first time since the SEC went divisional in 1992. This one is memorable for Steve Spurrier alternating quarterbacks Doug Johnson and Noah Brindise nearly every play. Florida State held a 29-25 lead late in the game when Johnson connected with Jacquez Green for a 62-yard pass play that set up Fred Taylor's game-winning touchdown run, costing the Seminoles a chance to play for the national championship.
I was at this game. To this date that was the loudest I have ever heard the Swamp get. EVER. My ears were buzzing. My fillings were buzzing. It was the next Wednesday before I could speak above a horse whisper. My father used to call this game the gift that keeps on giving.
Still the loudest I have ever heard
I was there too. I thought I was floating. On that long pass with 2 min left, I will NEVER forget the decibel level
I was there too! Agreed on all of your sentiments. It was a completely insane scene inside and outside the stadium after the game.
I was there as well. My freshman year. It was the loudest I have ever heard the swamp. God smiled on the Gators.
Same here at this game was super packed and such a great gator 🏆 win
What a treat having the beautiful michelle tefoya covering this game from the sideline
How did Florida not get an Alliance bowl bid after this win?
I have utmost respect for Bobby Bowden. He alone keep the two schools at the highest talent level with excellent games until the end!!!! Go Gators, but respect for the Noles!!!!
Nasdac wow what a sponcer throw in a walle gator and snap snap no chat..
I will always remember this game because of Janikowski mocking the fans with the gator chomp after his field goal which he assumed was the game winner... That made the victory so much sweeter! :)
My favorite part of the whole game is not at the end but at 12:36 where they are commenting on just how stout FSU's run defense is, right before Fred Taylor rips off a 50+ yard TD run.
I was at that game & when Fred Taylor ran that touchdown the swamp went nuts
No disrespect to Emmitt Smith at all but in my opinion, Fred Taylor was the most skilled back ever at UF and could have been an NFL record holder had he not had so many injury issues.
IT WAS GOOD IT WAS VERY STOUT FRED TAYLOR JUST MADE THE PLAY THAT DAY I HATE FRED TAYLOR AND JAQUEZ GREEN SO MUCH!!!
@@stillsearchingforsanity4332 Real spill. UF was nearly unbeatable when he was healthy.
@@stillsearchingforsanity4332 none taken, but we all know who was better in the NFL.
I was always amazed at what Bobby Bowden was able to acomplish at FSU, given it was a smaller school and the football program had much less funding and almost no inheritance from previous years. He built it from scratch basically in the mid-1970s.
Yeah well THIS WAS THE 1990'S
That’s why he’s the GOAT
It's a tie between Steve Spurrier and Billy Donovan is the greatest coaches in Gators History. I know Urban Meyer did a great job at Florida. But Spurrier put UF Football on the map. and Donovan made UF Basketball one of the best Basketball programs in the country. Turning a Football School into a Basketball School is well was a great job by Donovan. ps lets hope the Florida gets back on track to compete with Florida State. same with Miami. when all 3 teams are doing well it makes College Football much better. the same for other great programs like Southern California and Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Penn State, Tennessee and Michigan.
Florida football is not back Alabama is running the sec and they own the sec FSU owned Florida for years. Florida fans talk like they have more national championship then FSU while we are both evenly matched Willie Taggart is going to turn FSU Around.
Peter Griffin yeah, that didn’t happen...Florida lost to Georgia and LSU. Not bad. FSU could come back but it feels like it’s in a deeper hole and many may have lost faith. Florida has stiff competition in the SEC, FSU plays in a patsy league aside from Clemson.
@@petergriffin1387 update, FSU is still a complete dumpster fire hiring another new head coach, Florida had a great regular season last year with a hiesman finalist, things are looking good going into next season with Emory Jones behind center
@@jaredhunnicutt42 UPDATE: BAMA HAS NOT FADED
Steve Spurrier is still the greatest coach in Gators history, even though Urban Meyer won two National Titles, when you look at consistency, winning, and doing it the right way, Spurrier was the best football coach The Gators had. Really, I would say Meyer had one National Championship at Florida. Reason being is the 2006 team that won the National Championship against Ohio State, the bulk of those players were recruited by Meyer's predecessor, Ron Zook. Zook may not have been the best X'S and O's coach, but he deserves a lot of the credit for the 2006 National Championship Team.
All Gator-hating aside, this is a really good video. The Gators played a great game and beat one of our better teams. Props to jrsigl for putting highlights for both teams. Jacquez Green played a great game as did Fred Taylor. I love the Seminoles and I was pretty upset after this game, but it is a testament to how great football in the state of Florida was in the 90s.
After this game, Busby was 20-2 as a starter with both losses being to Florida. That's just beautiful.
November 22nd 1997. That was the day I first sat foot in Gainesville FL from Long Island NY. I remember my dad driving south on 34Th ave about 6:00 pm and seen almost every single car that passed by with a Gator flag or logo, that was epic, never had I seen such a spectacle, nor could have ever imagine to become one of those die hard Gator fans but here I am 22 years later cheering on the good old Orange and Blue...GO GATORS!!!!🐊
Go gators
From about '88-'05 College Football was just at a different level.
its so trash now, nfl included. flags on every play for clean tackles, new rules ruining the game, transfer portals, NIL.....its just pathetic now
The game that cost the 'Noles a shot at the National Title.
Randy Dubin & what a great game it was for fsu to lose , I went to this game GO GATORS
yeah, had the gators n bama had not voted us down, the $ec would have thrown some money around to get us a rematch the next game so we could steal the title ...
But FSU went to the national championship the year after that and won 1999. Florida State and Florida are equally matched in national titles. But I love the rivalry between both teams specially when both teams are good and ranked top ten as a Noles fan I hate the gators but I love the rivalry
@@petergriffin1387 it was actually the 1999-2000 season cause the next season Tennessee won the national championship against fsu & then the next year Fsu cheated their way to the national title by letting Peter Warrick play, I am a Gator & Hate the Noles
Steve Spurrier best play calling football game of the year.
I was at this game working on the Florida stat crew, a dozen of us crammed up near the sports reporters in a small open -air section that overhung the west stands.
Absolutely the LOUDEST game I’ve ever attended. Was so loud we had to resort to passing each other written notes to “talk” to each other. Wonderful game I will never forget.
I remember watching this game with my 2 big cousins(R.I.P.) Anthony. He was an FSU fan, and my other cousin is a UF fan. What a game. Will never forget it.
From a Nole fan. Spurrier was the real deal when it came to coaching. He lacked a few manners here ad there but if Coach Bowden beat him we Noles knew we were beating the best. The won loss record between Coach Spurrier and Coach Bowden came out about even when they laid things down. I think Spurrier came out one game ahead of Coach Bowden. A good rivalry. Too bad the Gators dropped Miami from their schedule. The 3 big teams in Fla should always play each other each year.
I agree about UF, FSU and Miami playing every year. The Gators dropped the Canes from regular play after 1987 because the SEC schedule was already so brutal.
Spurrier knew how to work social media before there was social media.
Wow that facemask that dude literally spun the QB with at 15:15 the QB pointed out and the official just walked right by and shook his head.
How did that not get called
That was back when the visiting team's conference provided the officials, I believe.
Was the visiting conference refs until after the Swindle in '03.
As a husker fan I remember just how great these two teams were in the 1990's and how their games were always up to par. I remember rooting for UF in this one to help NU jump FSU and get a national championship share.
This was a great game and will always remember it as one of my favorites!
incredible game call by Sean Mcdonnough. ive never heard a lead broadcast announcer call a game so loudly, vocally. He is so underrated.
The good ole days. This particular game went to UF but I hope our rivalry returns to it's national prominence soon. Lately one team or the other has been irrelevant nationally when we play. GO NOLES!
FUCK FSU
True that this was when the two Alpha dogs were fighting eachother. Now they just take turns being Alpha and Beta.
I got called in to work in the Hyperbaric Chamber right before the game started and heard it from all my friends about the game as they ran past the chamber. Damn I hated doing call.
The state of Florida has accounted for 11 championships over the last 40 years, I'm sure they would have over 20 if the big 3 didn't play each other every year.
one of my favorite runs of College football history....and i'm a die hard Auburn fan!!!!! Fred Taylor is on of my fav RB's though
During the 90's either UF, FSU or UM played for a national title every year except for 1997.
Man, this game and the Michigan-Ohio St. game in '97 really brought back emotional memories for me as a Jr in high school at the time. Seldom have I been happier with the outcome of 2 football games, in this case in one day! I watched the UM game that day as they were in contention for the Rose Bowl/National Championship while UF had been sluggish coming into this game. My friend told me the result of the UF-FSU game later over the phone and we were screaming at each other joyously over the receivers! Michigan helped Florida the year before knocking out OhioSt., Florida returned them the favor one year later in this game ;)
The Florida Gators started the whole " SEC is the best conference " talk ....... history baby !!!
Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhaahahahahahhahaahhahahahahahahahaahhahaahahahhahaahahahhahahaahahhahahaahahahahhahaahahahhahaahhahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahah a fsu fan. BOBBY BOWDEN INSPIRED NICK Sabin with defense. LSU started sec. Look where ur piece of shit college is now
Joe F # 1 in college basketball, track, and gymnastics?
Joe F UT smashed fsu in 98, fla had won in 96, then lsu, uf and alabama ran this shit. You shouldnt talk when you dont know.
Fsu went to 3 straight championships u crack baby. Wtf r u talkin bout
Put FSU in the SEC.. I wonder how good their record would be.
This was the worst game of my life. Worse than the national title loss to FLA in ‘96 because we would’ve won it in ‘97 if we had beaten FLA, and I definitely thought it was a lock that they’d beat FLA. I had to hear it from my friends at Gainesville.
I feel u I'm a Gators fan all day but I root 4 FSU and DA U except when dey play Florida just 2 think all those teams from Florida each won a championship in 90s 00s could've been going back 2 back in the Sunshine State but we always cannabilized each other Florida FSU where 1 and 2 for years but we and Miami canceled each other out so many times
No quit from fred taylor 2 fumbles bounced back to score 4 tds.
I wonder if Janikowski thought that Gator chop he did after his field goal would come back to bite him. Go Gators!
But as a Seminole Alumni, this was a great game. But FSU had 3 1st and goals, IIRC, and came away with 3 field goals, and that's a main reason why FSU lost.
I was at this game and been to many games at the Swamp, but NEVER was Gainesville rocking more than after this one. Crazy stuff! Go Gators
3 missed pats, a defensive td given up, a missed 28 yd fg, and Florida still won LOL.
Love how you show both teams highlights during the game
Love how FSU highlights consist of them being dirty
Well, we are the Criminoles :)
18:56 proves that "Large Marge" was a UF fan...
Steve wasn't trying to do that halftime interview at all
One of the top ten Gator wins of all time ......Go Gators!!!!
Damn right , I was at that game, & that was a hard fought win for the Gators, missed 3 extra points & a field goal but still won
Watching this drunk at 1 am, thanks for posting this jrsigl
You don't need to ask ESPN, just ask Bobby Bowden, he's quite honest about how he was too scared to join the SEC and have to face an SEC schedule. He's said it many times how he much preferred the ACC route of 10 easy wins a season and a chance at a national title every year. This is probably the only time in his life he's actually been consistently telling the truth on a subject.
I was at this game in section 325. Boss hog Bowden got out coached and bamboozled by Spurrier. 🤣🤣🤣
What a fantastic game! Not a Nole or a Gator, but this is what a passionate rivalry should be about. Also, I've learned over the last couple of years that FSU fans are the most insecure fans in college football. I don't understand why, but for whatever reason, that seems to be the case.
bull864 From what I understand, they get a lot of crap for being in the ACC.
+Derek Ruff didn't really matter because FSU OWNED Florida in the late 80s and 90s.
+getyoasshome Fair enough, but Gator fans will take that any day along with winning a National Title against FSU in 1996 and keeping FSU out of it in 1997
Nicholas Joost honestly I could easily see FSU with a share of that title....they beat UF in the regular season...the game should have never taken place it should have been FSU vs Arizona state.
+getyoasshome had it been in the post Bowl Alliance era of college football you'd be right, but it wasn't. That was during a time in which, no matter what, the winner of the Pac 10 and Big 10 played in the Rose Bowl. So there was no way at all that FSU was going to be able to play Arizona State.
And I disagree that FSU deserved a share. They beat UF at home, but the Gators had a top 5 strength of schedule and won the rematch by 32 points. FSU (like most years) played maybe 2 or 3 ranked teams in their regular season. The Gators had by far the best resume' of all the 1 loss teams in 1996 - and by the end of the bowl season, there were no more undefeated teams.
In these high pressure big-time games always lean on your star players.
I love great word play. One of the best ever was on a T-shirt after the game:
FSU #1? Sorry, wrong number!
Being at that game was indescribable.
I’m 38 yo , this is the first time I’ve watched👀 this game since I was 12yo, I was on the floor sobbing in my room with my head down.My older sister was in the living room jumping around cuz she like dem lizard 🦎 looking mofo . We go undefeated the whole season to go down to hogville 😂 yo loose to a team with no legitimate Starting Qb, playing 2 🗑 QBs. I’m born & raised from Tally so 💩was really going south around the city 🤬😤. That’s all you heard all year & I really mean all year until next year when we beat them in 98. If you was watching NcaaCF 🏈back them you remember how it was especially if u was living FLA🌞. The 🏈championship 🏆 literally had to come through the state of FLORIDA for 20 years 83-2003 between fsu,UF,UM whether playing vs each other or other teams in top 5 matches that dictates the championship. Ijs 🤷🏾♂️
So many missed opportunities beat everyone except one from our own state cause them FLORIDA BOYZ B RUNNIN
1998-99 season Florida State played NINE Ranked opponents
Tennessee Florida Miami Texas A&M NC State North Carolina Ga Tech Virginia Clemson............. NINE including 4 top 10 teams
The BEST college football game I have ever been to. The ENTIRE game, from the very first snap was only different levels of screaming. Fred Taylor was UNSTOPPABLE when we got that close to the end zone at the end of the game, I knew the FSU D would not hold him out.
AWESOME game
ag
Auburn did not win a National Championship, a Division Championship, and a Conference Championship in 1993 because they we're on Probation 11-0
I was at this game. It was my first UF vs FSU game in person and easily the most memorable experience in sports for me.
I also loved how in big games Spurier wasn't afraid to pull out risky plays on 4th down like that reverse throwback.
I’m only here cause of NCAA25😅😭
It's funny to see just how horrible the officiating was in this game. Go Gators!
Seminole tears are a delicacy.
4:20 my boy Thaddeus Bullard aka Titus O'Neil!
I was there. The best. Without a doubt. Never get tired of watching that Johnson to Green reception. Completely caught FSU and Rolle off guard. Love it.
Look at every "successful" year under Bowden and check, which teams they played and what their ranks were in that year. All CRAP!
Probably the highest point of the Tallahassee-Florida Rivalry
WOHOO!! This was my senior year and was the one and only game I DIDN'T sell my ticket for. It was well worth it!!
"I felt that it was too difficult to win through the SEC to win a national championship. I felt like our best route would be to go through the ACC and that did prove out to be correct. I don't know if we could have made it through the SEC." - Bobby Bowden
I was at this game and it was the best I have ever seen. My son and I had a great trip back to Tallahassee!
I still have my t-shirt: Hey Noles! You Can't Get There From Here! (National Championship Game) 🐊🐊🐊🐊
!blackdiamondpresscomix.20k🕋 Great 🎮. I just finished watching Choke @the Doak. 90's College 🏈 was the Best. Signed by the jr.jr 😂
One of the best Games in the Florida Rivalry Bowl. Almost wish more rival games ended like this one. Gets your blood going. Classic game.
As a 12 year old i cried myself to sleep after the int to end the game for fsu
it was just unreal that an opponent like this could be considered an underdog against Florida State
I’m a diehard born and raised bama fan but these florida/fsu/miami games was something special to watch in the 90’s I kinda miss it...but I’m very content with how things are going nowadays lol
My favorite moment EVER as a Gator fan.....even more than the title games. I remember being in my quad apartment in college, hearing all week on talk radio 'the Gators have no business being on the same Field with us (Noles fans)'. I literally jumped off my couch 2 feet in the air when Jacquez Green caught that deep pass, and I yelled: ' Who had no business being on the field now??!!!' To this day, that's why for me: It's great....to be.....a Flor-i-da Ga-tor!!!
Great game, and Husker fans like me will always be grateful.
Wanna give yourself chills put Fred Taylor 62 yard touchdown run against FSU next to Kelvin Taylor 62 yard run against Georgia!!
You are talking to someone who is a big fan of Billy Donovan. He is a big reason why I'm bigger Florida basketball fan than a Florida football fan. Notice how I agreed with the Nole fan, but only as far as Spurrier being the football coach in UF history. I agree that Billy Donovan is the best coach in UF history. What he has done at UF, turning a basketball program at a football school into a basketball power, has been nothing short of amazing.
9:29, thats the kind of attitude every player had under Bobby Bowden through the 90's. That's why FSU was so hated.
That should have been 15 Dead Ball UnSportsmen like Conduct...UM back then would always Drill U after U were down
It was THE loudest game/sporting event/concert ANYTHING that I’ve ever experienced.
I remember this game. I was at work but...we had a TV in the shop. Lost a bet to my ol' gator fan buddy Paul S.
Damn work did it to me also i only seen the Fred Taylor 50yd run passing by a restaurant
who cares GO GATORS
Man, what a blast to watch this. Brings back memories. You couldn't breathe before this game everything was so important. One day this rivalry will be back!!! GO GATORS!!
greatest rivaly in all of football an the day it truly returns will b a great day
Now a uf player would go play for fsu for some NIL money 😢
If you can't win the national championship, the next best thing is costing one of your rivals the title. I like Mullen and all, but dam Spurrier is just special. Hope he's having a good retirement. GO GATORS!!!!!!! 🐊🐊🐊
Wow! The way Sean McDonough called this game made it one of the most exciting game I've ever seen! Beating the criminoels after all the cheap shots they continually get away with and no flags or dejections is one reason why we have such ridiculous rules in the game now, FSU and Miami are the dirtiest programs in college football history, apparently Bowden wasn't such nice guy like everyone thought and Miami is just Mafia U!!
Gators made the plays when it counted. A year earlier FSU outplayed the Gators in Doak.
My recollection is that this Seminole team was better than the 96 squad.
Spurrier one of the smartest coaches of all time. This game was the Apex of his genius!!!
@Jagnole101 There were some VERY good players in this game. I can remember Minor, Snoop Minnis & Peter Warrick. Dayne won the Heisman because Warrick did something stupid. Shame it didn't pan for them in the NFL. Fred Taylor was the goods (I hear his son is a good back in his own right). Jacquez Green came to play especially that day. Mo Collins knocking heads back in when. Those battles were CLASSIC!! Gators fan here.
Hate fuel. As if we ever run low but still. THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF EACH AND EVERY YEAR.
must win boys LFG
It's 2023 and I'm still a die hard Seminoles fan.. these kids these days don't know shit about college ball... PERIOD
Quezy as spurrier called him was great in this game definitely one of the greatest games ever in swamp FSU was shell shocked even Bowden said so years later it was one of the loses that stayed with him .
As a Tennessee fan this was a weird game because we hated spurrier but were cheering for Florida to pull the upset to keep our slim national championship hopes alive. Fsu losing gave us the path to play in the orange bowl against Nebraska but we also needed a mich loss in the rose bowl
Gators, Seminoles, Hurricanes. Florida dominated college football in the 90s
“BEHIND THE DEFENSE!”
For a fsu fan this game hurt more than the sugar bowl earlier that year. FSU was supposed to win this game they were a better all around team than the year before and Florida wasn’t as talented that year but they won anyway. Credit Steve Spurrier, imo probably his best coaching job.
Man I remember every bit of this whole game Florida win this rivalry game against Florida State they hate each other great rivalry game 32-29 Gators wins
Back when college uniforms were cool. Nowadays they look stupid.
I remember watching this game live. It was a great great game.
Yes, they were asked to join twice and bowden declined. Also what does having multiple teams from one state in the same conference have to do with anything? Auburn and Alabama are in the same conference and state, U of mississippi, and Ole Miss are in the same conference and state, U of Tennessee and Vanderbilt are as well. Stop trying to deny FSU is not a program that comes by its "success honestly.
Im a nole gattors were great we was to didnt get doen im59 watchel all off the games Wsome but in three weeks we going all the way we do have to go to swamp just a win go noles
Back when FSU was #1 every year, cause they never played any teams worth a shit cept Miami. I like how twice now FSU has been asked to join the SEC and they decline.
Spurrier didn't mention Taylor and his 4 touchdowns against the best rushing defense
1997 was a crazy year in college football..Notre Dame only went 7-6 with a bowl loss..Purdue went 9-3 with a bowl win..An inferior Florida team upset Florida State..Nebraska beat Mizzou on a deflected kick catch in the endzone..Charles Woodson won Heisman instead of Peyton Manning..Michigan and Nebraska split the national championship..🏈
Woodson deserved dat
17:03-17:06...The reason Mark Richt never won a national title at GA. Too conservative!
Florida State played in the national championship game in 1996, ‘98, ‘99, and 2000. Losing this game to Florida was the only thing that prevented FSU from playing for the national title 5 years in a row. They did lose 3 of the 4 championship games they played in. They were heavily favored in 2 of those losses and had just beaten Florida in the ‘96 regular season finale before getting blown out by the Gators in the Sugar Bowl for the national title.
Yeah, it shows how easy it is to beat up on the All-Cupcake Conference pussies, be rested and healthy for Florida, then get your ass beat by real competition in the post-season. Good thing Bobby opted out of joining the SEC. FSU would’ve been the next Vandy.
I know I'm a Florida fan, but this is some seriously rotten sportsmanship on FSU's part throughout the whole game, even for a rivalry. It's fine for players to get passionate, but they were being childish.
That being said, what was CBS smoking thinking taking up 2/3rds of the screen to show scores was a good idea?
As a die hard FSU fan this game hurts now. I was in high school. Still hate the Gators
@Jagnole101 Wait, so are you saying since the Gators were a better team than FSU you'd rather have just played a weaker ASU team for the title than having to beat the Gators? Haha. Sucks to suck, Florida State.
Idk, why are you sharing your theory with me, they dont bandwagon with the best SEC team, they root for the SEC team in the big bowls because they want to see the most deserving team (SEC team) win it.
FSU declined because they could never win with any constancy in the SEC. Got a shot to win the Nat'l Title every year in the ACC. That's just reality. Ask any reporter on ESPN
@rhanley01 oh yeah but Alabama fucked up the streak because they didn't win the SEC title , but still the SEC won again!! I don't think any other conference can say that
Sadly FSU had a long QB drought after Casey Weldon & Charlie Ward... All that talent but only average QBs
Florida State was just lucky that Miami was on probation
