i have gotton a mandolin for a late christmas present (never touched one before) and i have learned this song in just 20 minits with your help, im deffinitly inspired to learn more riffs and write my own songs using it! thanks!
AMAZING!!!! I've always loved this song and your arrangement between the two instruments captures the ENTIRE song!! Love the work and appreciate the tutorial!!
For many years now I have been buying instruments on eBay and using the Dummies books along with RUclips to teach myself how to play them (flute, mandolin, violin, guitar, and trumpet so far) I'm telling you those books are full of secrets and make it really easy (along with practice) to learn how to play an instrument. In my opinion doing this is better and cheaper then video game systems & games and playing video games!!!
thank you so much i am only 14 years old and love this kind of music i am so inspired by your playing i hope to only be as good as jimmy page of john denver one of these days thank you so much.
Nice job, Don. I always enjoy listening to your playing. Thanks for including the octave mandolin along with the mandolin. I play one or the other, depending on the collaboration and the occasion, so I found this tutorial to be really helpful. Did I mention that you absolutely rock?
Nice Don....best video I've seen so far of breaking down someone's tutorial version of the song. I have a couple of your books. Would be great to see you publish the full tablature sheet music for this song, "Goin' to California.."
Don Julin is the author of Mandolin for Dummies if your interested in the mandolin I would highly suggest buying the book because reading it helped me a ton and very quickly- I got my copy at Barns & Nobel.
How big a person do you have to be to make a video such as this? This has improved my playing tenfold. You are an excellent instructor, musician and inspiration! TYVM! D.
Your videos are making me want to buy a Mandolin more and more. Will need to get saving. Any suggestions for a beginner Mandolin (that is not crap) in the €200 price range?
This was breathtakingly beautiful - I've now resolved to purchase an instrument by the end of the week. What type of traditional mandolin' is being used here, specifically? I've heard descriptors like A-type, etc. being thrown around, but have now decided that this is exactly what I want. So if anyone has a second, please do let me know. :)
The octave mandolin (first shown) has lower notes than a standard mandolin. He is using an A type F hole mandolin for the melody (second shown). The octave mandolin is a round hole A type. The other type of mandolin ( not shown) is the F type mandolin which typically has the scroll work on the wood. . Each string on an octave mandolin is one octave lower than the corresponding string on a standard mandolin, but they are tuned the same G-D-A-E. (fourth to first strings)
Greeting's from Charlevoix. Thank you for this and your many lessons. Awesome!! At 57, I just started to get serious about mandolin. I have a bazukki, that hangs on the wall for decoration but I just learned that they are also tuned like a mandolin. Do you know if the octave mandolin and the basukki are similiar instruments? Thanks again, lookinn forward to spending a lot of time with your videos.
That is soooo cool. I just got done making a mandolin and this will be my next song I learn. Thanks for making this video. I see you have a couple of down thumbs. Well, I give those who gave you a thumbs down a THUMBS DOWN! (Unbelievable) You must have a fair amount of time arranging this and most of us really appreciate it. Thanks again. If you see a large increase of views coming up it’s probably me. :)
What kind of mandolin is that? All the ones at the guitar factory are tiny and I have larger fingers but that one looks like it will fit my finger size.
If anyone wants the chord chart email me at donjulin@charter.net. I do not have any tab for this, but if you watch, listen and imitate, you will get it. Go back to the original LZ recording and try to play along once you have the basics down. You will know it much better if you challenge yourself to learn it without having paper in front you.
Hi there are many ways to play chords on the octave mandolin. Most of them are incomplete chords due to the nature of the instrument. Sorry the camera angle was not so good on this video. It was many years ago and I have improved my camera skills. You can see the complete lesson and get the chord diagrams at www.mandolinshealtheworld.com
really captures the spirit of the song like no other tutorial i've seen. thanks so much!
this is great, so melodic,...I'm definitely getting a mandolin. Thank you for sharing this.
i have gotton a mandolin for a late christmas present (never touched one before) and i have learned this song in just 20 minits with your help, im deffinitly inspired to learn more riffs and write my own songs using it! thanks!

Very cool, what tuning are you using on the mandolin? GDAE?
what kind of recording equipment do you use and how do you do the insert and keep the music in time?
Don,
I hate to be a gear junkie but what brand and model is that octave mandolin?
Skill.
nice
What kind of mandolin is that? All the ones at the guitar factory are tiny and I have larger fingers but that one looks like it will fit my finger size.
Have the chord charts for this song already posted up on your website?
I'm watching this. But i don't even have a mandolin lol
HI, i cant find the chord charts on your website, can you post the oink on here please?
Wish you would break down the chords better. Some of us are learning and have no idea where to place our fingers on some of these chords
You can view the entire lesson and download the pdf at www.mandolinshealtheworld.com
Can there be tabs for this or something? please?
If anyone wants the chord chart email me at donjulin@charter.net. I do not have any tab for this, but if you watch, listen and imitate, you will get it. Go back to the original LZ recording and try to play along once you have the basics down. You will know it much better if you challenge yourself to learn it without having paper in front you.
I wish you would show tabs and angle camera elsewhere, most of these would be much easier.
sounds a little like Battle of Evermore at the start
WHAT IS THE STRUMMING PATTERN WHEN YOU USE THE MANDOLIN A STYLE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
violin player learning the mandolin.
tabs for mandolin anyone?
I’m extremely confused on your chords. What you are calling a “G” and “Dm” are not those chords. No idea what’s going on here
