    Guys, we are understand that the gerber is not full tang. But thanks to everyone who spammed the comment section making it harder to find useful comments. Read before u comment because someone probably said it before u did.

      your understanding of the word full tang isn't completely accurate. fyi.

  • @AdamCiolfi

    Need to make a correction at 2:47. The Gerber LMF II is not a full tang. The blade is meant to be able to cut thru live electric wires without conducting electricity to the user. Was designed for helicopter pilots that might have to cut their way free in a survival escape scenario and was purpose built with this feature.

      Glad someone actually studied the knife. Everyone keeps saying it fell apart while batoning wood but I watch an old man use it to cut through a car door without any issue.

    I don't believe the LMF is full tang. It was designed for pilots that may need to cut live wires.There is a break in the tang for that reason. Check Ultimate Survival Tips review. He is the Gerber guru.

    Great review. I like both knives, but the Gerber LMFII is just awesome in my opinion. Being in a more humid environment, I like the stainless steel of the Gerber for survival situations because I'm probably not going to have a can of WD40 on hand to lube the carbon steel blade after each use in such a situation, and if the blade rusts, I'm screwed. My LMFII has performed like a champ so far. I mean, it has been a beast. I have chopped a lot of heavy brush and even small trees with it, including very thick limbs and the blade chops exceptionally well and still holds an edge after hardcore use. I have not batoned with it, so Gideon may have a point on that, but I could not be happier with my LMFII so far. Perhaps the Gidmeister got a lemon.

  • @jgreystoke

    BK10 vs LMF:
    1. 1095 Cro Van vs 420HC.
    2. Full tang vs partial tang.
    3. One piece steel construction vs two piece(hammer pommel that is a separate add-on).
    4. Easy to sharpen straight edge vs serred.
    I accept partial tang etc in my ultra cheap Moras(carbon and stainless). Not as strong as a BK10. But I'd take one of them over the LMF, since they are a quarter the weight:).

    These knives need to have a baby together. Would love to see a knife with the BK-10s blade shape + the serration and the handle of the LMFII.

    Take both, use them for different tasks. Lmf 2 for tactical applications and getting your self out shit situations to survive (mainly why I think the Lmf is better for military personnel). Use the Bk 10 for "bush craft", chopping wood and every thing that follows.

  • @FloFloNL

    I love the story about the pomel and breaking an aircraft (plane or chopper) window !!
    I don't know what kind of glas or polymer you use in your aircrafts in the US, but in Europe we use a polymer that won't break when you hit it with your pomel of your knife. (due to flying birds?)
    If we want to break a aircraft window, we need to use a fire extinguisher first, before we can break the window.
    And in that case we use the back of the fire extinguisher to break the window as well.
    So please don't say that a pomel is used for breaking an aircraft window.
    In case of an emergency i wish you all the best and luck breaking the window !!

    • @268Viper
      @268Viper 6 лет назад +4

      wardog theses several reasons for a pointed pummel. If you have a crash landing in a combat zone the pummel can be used as a skull breaker, can also be used to break a window of a house you may come across, can be used for breaking bones, for breaking open coconuts can use it to chip away at stone to make a spear or arrow point so you don’t need to use your blade. There’s many uses for it.

    From a survival perspective I would go with the BK-10, mostly because I prefer the plain edge to the serrated edge, but the LMF II is a great knife.

  • @PRiBz73

    First of great review Gideon. I have both of these knives.The Gerber has more of a rat tang, The tang is about half the size... or less than the blade (google it for the pic ppl). Also, it's not connected to the butt. There is a gap of maybe 1/8"-1/4" from the tang to the butt for obvious shock resistant reasons. That rubber handle with the points that meet the serrations will break off with heavy bat-toning. Ka-Bar Becker knives are far superior to Gerber and many other knives. I own many from both companies and Becker wins hands down. BK-10/BK-7 or the tank BK-2. Thx for the review.

  • @speedphreak5619
    @speedphreak5619 10 лет назад +2

    Owning both i can say: for an "all- around" survival knife the LMF II takes it, hands down. The ability to go from urban to rural survival situations makes it adaptable but not specific. Its "hammer" is larger and more flat than the BK10's, making it easier to use. The serrations make the blade very dynamic to several possibles. The knife can be easily lashed to pole of sorts for a makeshift spear. The buttcap has a dedicated window punch designed to pop HELO-glass, made up of an acrylic polycarbonate ( so it doesnt shatter like auto windows in a crash). Sheaths are 50% of a knifes "system", and the BK10's doesn't even compare. Just some of the pros that give the LMF II the overall advantage. That being said, the Becker BK10 would make for a better RURAL or wilderness survival knife for its design being more dedicated to that environment IMO

    And while I'm loving the hell out of my Gerber LMF 2 (I plan on getting another one that I don't do a destruction test on) but the Becker BK 2 is on the top of my list for knives under $100. I'm pirmarily self-defense/survival and I think the LMF is very underrated as a self-defense blade. Plus the upside-down draw on it is fast and nasty ;)

  • @grantw6266
    @grantw6266 8 лет назад +1

    Great video !! Thanks.
    The difference in the tang is primarily for electrical conductivity. I don't think batoning wood splitting was at the top of Gerbers priorities. Also, you failed to mention the LMF better designed for lashing as a spear.
    I too have beat the snot out of an LMF with no issues.
    Alas, the search for the ABSOLUTE perfect knife continues , but these are close.

    The lmf 2 is not full tang it has an electrically isolated blade from the pommel so in the event a pilot has to cut electrical wires he or she will no be electrocuted and there are cases or that knife strapping at that spot exposing the separation of the two components

  • @Foxxtrott1100
    @Foxxtrott1100 11 лет назад +1

    I just took delivery of an LMF Infantry and I like the knife. I agree the steel could be better but for $60 the sheat makes up for it. My only gripe is they should in some way cap/sleve that plastic insert at the front of the tang where it meets the handle. Mine has the most minute play in it and as we know that's only gonna get worse over time.

      JaydenThePanda It really depends on what you plan on doing with the knives. I've owned an LMF II and I loved it. it never disappointed me. The LMF is much more tactical and can be concealed much easier. However the bk10 is just an absolute monster as far as hard use goes. I would trust the Bk10 as a survival knife as compared to the LMF. I hope this helps!

    Killer review, honest and straight forward, the Gerber design seems much more comfortable in the hand. I just don't get the hate people have for Gerber and BearG, so glad we live in America where a nobody can run around in the woods show people how to survive and become a super rich somebody. I was checking out schrade f9 or f10 seems to be solid very thick and under 50$.
      That would be awesome if ya do get them posted let me know, I would watch for sure. I've never really been big into survival stuff, I just want to get more bush crafty and me and my wife want to learn some basic skills. My dad in law gave me a Taurus 357 revolver a few months back, its my first gun.....it goes boom;) Very nice gun very reliable. Its a start for all situations, now the knife and down the road a bow, I've never been into hunting I grew up with it all around me watched many dear get cleaned but never went hunting, my dad was weird about that, kept to himself. Anyways its important to know those skills and its never to late to learn amen.

      Airik1111
      .357 is no joke. It certainly has stopping power. A bow is awesome but a crossbow is even more , but very expensive.(never got one). The bow is something I never really got accurate with.
      Browning is another reputable name like gerber. There knives are slightly expensive but tend to fall apart and go dull quickly.
      Check out SOG or Cold Steel blades. They make knives that are the real deal. They keep on working for the long haul.

    I have 3 survival knives.
    Gerber LMF II when traveling in our main city under ground subways to break the shatterproof glass or cut various materials, plus insulated for electric wires etc. Best survival knife for urban city type disasters IMHO. I Also carry a Schrade SCAX Tactical Axe that has a crowbar at the end with this knife.
    Becker Crewman if traveling away from the city going into bush.
    Ka-Bar USMC for self-defense while scrounging around for food etc after SHTF

    The BK10 is really 1095 cro-van, it's a steel used mostly by Ka-Bar, it's like 1095 high carbon but has chrome and Vanadium, hints cro-van. It makes it easy to sharpen and holds an edge. But nice review, I agree with your verdict. I own a BK7 and it's a beast!

  • @gideonstactical
    @gideonstactical  11 лет назад

    I have used all sorts of steel with fixed blades from S30V, VG-10, AUS-8, 1095HC, 5160HC, D2, CPM-3V, and 420HC just to name a few and I would say that 420HC is not my favorite steel, but Buck and Gerber Heat treat it well and from them it is in the AUS-8 ball park. Not a great steel, but it definitely doesn't SUCK!

    I have an Lmf2, and I have a Bk2, bk7 and bk 16... I don't get all the negative comments on the Lmf2 and Gerber in general. I have used my Lmf2 on some batoning, huge wood no, but wood as thick as the blade's length, never had a problem with the Gerber. Quite honestly the Lmf2 wasn't made for hard core wood processing, it was made for pilots.. Thanks for your review.

    so in other words, go with a proven rock solid blade(bk-10) from a trusted company that's been around for 100 years, but if you want mediocre, go with the company that thinks bear grylls knows what he's talking about( gerber) and thinks cheap stainless is the way to go

    I have the BK Crewman and the LMF II is arriving today.
    I prefer the BK for 'Wilderness' survival and the Gerber LMF will now go into my 'Urban' get home bag.
    In an urban disaster I think the Gerber will be better with serrations because you have different types of materials to cut through.
    Imagine an earthquake and you're in a building with wires hanging around, which knife would you prefer.
    Also I can strip off the unnecessary sheathing on the Gerber because in the city I cannot wear a full tang knife on my belt thereby saving space in my bag.
    I also bought the Ka-Bar Mark 1 half serrated but the pommel is not insulated. I'll find out today if my new choice makes better sense for an urban knife

  • @James-ke5sx
    @James-ke5sx 6 лет назад

    The Gerber seems more practical to get out of a situation such as a crashed helicopter Etc but once on the ground and you no longer need to be cutting parachute cords and stuff then the BK would be better. Easy solution carry both. I have the BK crewman the combat Bowie and the little Remora knife that goes either around your neck or in the little slot in the back of the pocket of the combat Bowie sheath. Thanks for the video nice comparison.

    Lmf 2 would be a lot better if it was full tang , I love the kydex holder on the Gerber

  • @red5llaw
    @red5llaw 10 лет назад

    I agree with you generally.
    I worry about the Gerber not being full tang and I hate half serrated. The Ka-Bar Beckers are all full tang. I have had a knife fail on me when I was relying on it on a long distance bivouac - I only made it because I had a Leatherman Wave, a CRKT M=16 Big Dawg folder and a hatchet. I ONLY buy full tang now even if it doesn't look as pretty or slim.
    On camping trips, I like to carry at least one large cutting tool (my Tomahawk or a Machete or Ka-Bar Bk7 or Bk9. The Bk9 is a BEAST!!) and I like to carry a fixed blade "Camp Knife" around 4" - 5" blade for smaller chores, whittling, feather sticks, meals or processing game. I don't like to have a single point of failure and the important things I usually have triple or quad redundancy (cutting tool, fire, water & shelter) hence the CRKT folder and Leatherman Wave.
    Good review, thank you

  • @gideonstactical
    @gideonstactical  11 лет назад

    The BK16 is lighter, thinner, and smaller. The BK10 is a stand alone knife, where as the BK16 is a great companion blade to have with another larger blade like the BK7 or BK9 or to use on short hikes.

    Weird comparison, but very interesting. IMO, the LMF is more of a multi-tool and is a bit better for self defense. The BK is more of a tank and handle baton'g much better. If you go under the assumption that you simply cannot hammer on a rubberized handle, I think the LMF wins this hands down. The ESEE 6 would be a better comparison. And dollar for dollar, pound for pound, the ESEE 6 is a very hard knife to beat. Great vid, thx Gid.

    gideonstactical the lmf 2 is actually not full tang. it stops about 3/4ths or 5/6ths through the handle then the metal butt end is put in. i have the lmf 2 and i found that the plastic/rubber handle is like almost shreading in a way at the point where it comes into contact with the fabric on the holster were the holster "locks" it in place. i was wondering if you have had the same problem? i refer to it as a problem because then the handle gets water-logged.

  • @jensonbeaver2678
    @jensonbeaver2678 10 лет назад

    the lmf isnt a full tang ints more a 3/4 tang because the pummel is only secured by the end of the grip so if a pilot has to get out of his plane and cuts threw a bare wire he wont get shocked but it is a strong knife besides that point.

  • @ksmith6wm6
    @ksmith6wm6 10 лет назад

    Great review of both knives. The only thing I would add is that the LMF 2 is not full tang, it has a partial tang that is separated from the pommel for electrical current insulation. Whereas, the BK10 will conduct a current from tip to pommel which could be hazardous to your health. Great talking points though, I enjoyed it.

      Yes,my choice would be the Becker.I especially like the BK2 Companion.There is a company that makes affordable kydex sheaths starting at $50.However,the BK10 isn't one of them(I don't know why they exclude this model) grizzly-outdoors.com

    by the the way....if you make a mess the handle hiting the handle with a stick...batoning wrong way!! is not going to be a knife fail. Is just a user fail.

    gerber isn't a full tang. it has about a three quarter tang and the pommel is a separate piece that is insulated from the blade.

    I have a Gerber Prodigy, and while I like that knife, there is no way that I would take that or a LMF II over a BK10. I really like my BK10.

    One has to keep in mind that the insert on the lmf is the same material that your whole handle is made out of so once again by their nice handle will fail equally I'm afraid

    Yup I agree that the 420 Stainless is a cheap steel,, but you should call it by the real name it's 420HC there is a difference just like when you say 1095 it should be called by its real name it's 1095 CroVan perhaps not that great of a difference but it is a tougher steel making it a very good edge retention steel, the same difference with the 420 and the 420HC Buck uses it and my knives by Buck like the Buck 110 and the Special 119 hold a better edge than my Diver Knife but it's a better corrosion resistance steel, also my Condor' like my Jungle Saber in the 420HC infact it's just as good as my friends 1075 he even said that, or my Wilderness Tool, I wish you can make a video on the Wilderness Tool there aren't any video's on it and yet I think it's a very good camp tool especially when I'm using it to build a shelter it's pretty hefty tool 1lb, yet very versital you can chop and even use it like a knife, I like mine and it's in the 420HC and it holds a good edge retention, I didn't mean to be a critic and please I'm not but it can be a little confusing when you use short cut's and it can be confusing any how I really enjoy your video even though I don't have the LS I do have the BK-10 and I think it's a very good knife I have it paired off with the BK-9 and for the money I think it's a great combination out there, I recently used it for my coffee on the open fire that I've been doing and both of them preformed beautifully, all I do is use my Wicked Tough Saw made by Wicked Tree Gear and my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet made by 2Hawks only because I like using my tools, but the two knives could do just fine by themselves, it just helps me to get the job maybe a little faster, again Thank You.

    24 hours after ordering LMFII I canceled it and ordered BK10 just came in today and WOW I was so giddy when I opened it this is my 1st Survival knife & I don't see myself needing another one anytime soon feels frigging indestructible hair shaving sharp and very sturdy and beefy if the BK2 is thicker it sounds more like a tank with a handle now that I'm actually holding the BK10, maybe I'm just overwhelmed because it's my 1st one but wow man thanks for putting me on to this knife can't wait to take it into the woods

    The Gerber wins the Cool factor rating ...... It looks sexier and has the word "infantry " in its name .The BK is just UGLY ! Most knives are better than the personell carrying them . As George S Patton said , Its the Soldier , not the weapon that wins battles . The Gerber is my choice . Better glass breaker , much better sheath , electrally insulated , hammer and seration is an advantage , yes , even for survival cutting animal bone etc

    The BK-10, happends to be one of the knives, paired off with my BK-9, and the BK-16, to me it's a great set, since I am a 3knife carry guy, it's a set that does great for me, not only does it match my BK-9, I have a hard time choosing between the BK-2 when I go into the woods, to me, it's one of my favorite 5" blades, ergonomic handle, grivory is excellent material, and awesome steel 1095 CroVan is real good stuff, there is only a couple of knives that I like better, and they are a little more expensive, not much, but just alittle, my Ratmandu has to be it, besides my Busse Ratmandu in INFI, but don't get me wrong, I think the BK-10, is a great hunting/camp/survival knife.

    Mr Gideon I'm sending my Ka-Bar back to get it replaced it bends slightly to the left I know there's no such thing as perfect but it's obvious to the naked eye I l don't know for sure if it came like this I was to excited unbox in it to check it thoroughly (lesson learned) I've only had it for 24 hours before I noticed it but I've only used it for whittling and I stabbed at the wooden fence in my back yard a few times nothing intense so I'm pretty sure I didn't bend it or could've just wanted to ask what has been your experience with Ka-Bars warranty or customer service if any? And have you ever had a problem like this? Thanks.

    The Gerber sheath is kick ass but the knife is not full tang. The glass breaker has a small tang. They are not connected. There is a space in between. Its for shock Gerber says. Its stupid. The blade WILL fall out after a while. If this knife was made out of aus8 and "full tang" I would get this knife in a second.

      I Got LMF II more than 5 years using this knife quite hard. Nothing falled out. If knife is well made it does not have to be full tang. This Gerber knife is of course not perfect (however close to perfection), but in general does his job pretty well

      you are correct it's three quater tang the reason was so it can be used to cut through electrical cable /wires. this knife is insulated which is great . it was designed for air pilots for getting out of air craft .the lmf2 is a great knife I love mine it's my go to knife.

    What kind of oil do you recommend for caring for/cleaning/storing knives. I was wondering if gun oil is ok.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  10 лет назад +1

      You can use gun oil, I like to use olive or vegetable oil. It is cheaper and non-toxic if you use your knife to do food prep of any kind.

    Agreed, the AUS-8 Cold Steel "Kobun" really surprised me, same as their 1055 steel Gladius "Machete" (it's a sword, :D)
    I did some heavy duty knife throwing and "Zombie-killing" tests and the LMF 2 has some wobble to it but I probably put about 15 years of standard use on it within 6 months lol
    The Ka-BAr Tanto and the1095 cro van has impressed me to no end, though. The Ka-Bar looks rough like my Gerber but is holding up SLIGHTLY better, I used the LMF 2 as a throwing knife, heavy impact shit
