    I carried the LMF II on my body armor everyday for two years in Iraq. I think the knife is one of the best knives on the market in it's price range. I've never experienced any problems due to the steel quality. It is a very rugged, and comfortable knife in the hand. And I know that this was a torture test, but who whacks a rubber, and plastic handle designed to be a insulator with a stick? Really? What I really like about it was the sheath. It was designed to be used on MOLLE gear. I positioned mine upside-down on the left side of my chest so I could grab it easily in the event of a gun grab attempt. The sheath was very secure, but released the knife easily with a quick tug. Also...the sheath has a very handy sharpener built in! The LMF II is a knife that I was very confident in carrying daily, used it for something almost daily, and it held a nice edge. I'm glad I was never in a situation where I had to beat up the handle though! I have even used the hammer on the end of the handle with great success. I recommend the LMF II for an everyday carry knife. After all...survival situations almost always happen unexpectedly, and who's going to carry that 14 inch long mondo knife everywhere they go? The LMF II "IT IS AWESOME"!

    You weren't just accidentally hitting the handle when striking the spine, you were repeatedly crushing the handle with the log and missing the spine all together. Not fair to the knife.

    Gerber LMF II is an excellent knife and I think a lot of people (me included) would say you're wrong!
    Honestly you beat the hell out of that knife and, even though the knife will qualify as a survival knife, plastic and/or rubber will never be able to take that abuse period! Gerber could have gone for something else than plastic in the hilt, but rubber was certainly the way to go for grip on the pommel. This being said you would, when batoning thusly, always beat up the rubber to much. But that's just you, with your "system of use". To everyone else out there: you'll NOT regret buying this knife. It served me very well!

    Your batoning was done incorrectly! Of course the guard/rubberized plastic broke! That was totally and completely your fault, not the knife's.
    I'm not a huge fan of Gerber, especially lately, but this knife is solid - when you use it properly.

    great review! The LMF's "weakness" are a compromise to having an electrical insulated knife. That is the the plastic covered hilt which broke on you and 3/4 tang.

  • @KickMe1177
    @KickMe1177 3 года назад +2

    I grabbed my lmf2 mainly because of the fact the handle is insulated. I survey natural gas lines all through the country and run into alot of rouge hot fences. I could easily use it to move hot wire away/cut through it. Plus this thing is beefy. I haven't had to use it on any threats/wildlife yet but I believe it would do great in that regard. I have had it for around 4 years now and hasn't failed me yet

  • @pinkiewerewolf

    Love my LMF II, I've had it for many years. The handle is designed to give protection against electricity if the knife comes in contact with live wires. (Ie, going through a wall for egress or similar situation)
    That being said, it is definitely a knife you can stake your life on, more-so than other knives in it's intended role.
    If you want a baton capable size knife of this size, try ESEE 4 or RAT, or some bushcraft blade.

    • @pinkiewerewolf
      @pinkiewerewolf 10 лет назад

      BTW, I agree that Gerber has great CS. I bought my blade from a local dealer and it didn't have the leg harness. Years later, after seeing the LMF online and the harness I contacted Gerber CS to buy a harness for my knife and they shipped it free.
      Awesome.

      My Esee 6 is a great knife for batoning. That being said, I would NEVER bang on the handle with a log. I love the G-10 3d scales and don’t feel like damaging them…just because I can.

    • @pinkiewerewolf
      @pinkiewerewolf Год назад

      @@bermo61 Never say NEVER. Life has a way of making us eat those words. I’ve batoned with my ESEE 6 many times, even my Izula II. I wouldn’t want to hit the handle but I would if it got stuck in the wood and that was my only way to get the knife out. Scales are replaceable.

    • @bermo61
      @bermo61 Год назад

      Ok, not to criticize but think about what you are saying: you are in a life or death situation and the only way to survive it is to abuse your best survival tool? That is madness! The reason I would not baton against the handle of my knife is because the handle will never stand up to abuse like the blade will, but once you break the handle, you now have converted your excellent knife into a sharp piece of metal that is now uncomfortable to grip. No thanks! With a little common sense, my handle will remain intact and my knife will maintain its utility.

  • @gideonstactical
    @gideonstactical  11 лет назад

    I thank you for the comments and opinion of the blade, the one thing I will have do disagree with you on is batoning. While usually not needed, there are definitely times where if I did not split medium thick logs (3-5in.) I would not be able to keep my fire going. I do a lot of camp fires in the dead of winter here in the Rockies and the wood and twigs are often snow covered and damp and I have to split the wood to get to the dry middle.

    Hence why it's good to have a hatchet or something if you are really hard core. I carry mine as a field knife in the military, but honestly my Gator and Paraframe get more use. If I had only one knife to choose I'd take my LMF. In a SHTF situation it's good for most things, but I own more than one type of field tool 😂. This isn't MvW where you have one knife and an empty backpack, I have options. Remember the 5 P's and you're good.

  • @sniperforce34
    @sniperforce34 9 лет назад +13

    First of all, most smart people do not baton wood by hitting the handle of a knife! They use the blade and stay with in normal boundary of a knife!! Its called common sense! When atoning through wood, most people hit towards the front to the tip of the blade for the most effective results!!! My question is, are you city educated or wilderness educated? Not trying to sound mean, but its common sense! Work with the tools not against it or defy its capability and try to break it! Most of the test I seen you do were ok, but taking ur baton and purposely hitting the backside of the handguard was not a sensible and practice thing to do!

      Nick "torture testing" revealed that rubber and plastic would break and tear if hit by 15-20lbs of blunt force???? Common sense should have revealed that to him before he ever struck the knife???
      Honestly would you use your bare hands to sweep up a box full of broken glass? No, you would not do it even though your hands were never tore up by glass shards.

    Good review brother, but I gotta disagree with you a little bit... Now I'm not even a huge fan of Gerber, so I'm saying this without any bias, but I think you were going a little hard on them. One of the first things I learned about batoning was to NEVER strike the handle of your knife. In fact, MOST knife handles won't hold up to thrashing on them with a baton. So I wouldn't ding the knife any points for breaking when you were whacking away on the handle with a baton. That's just bad practice when it comes to batoning. Great demos of the knife nonetheless, and the failure worked out for the better anyways because it gave us the chance to see what Gerber's warranty service is like! I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised! I'd give them a shot. Now if only they can listen to their consumers and start putting out some solid bushcraft/survival knives.....WITHOUT SERRATIONS!!!!!!!! LOL

    I don't understand why it seems like every RUclips knife reviewer uses knives to split wood for fires. I've been camping, backpacking etc for 25 years and am an old Eagle Scout. Never once have I used a knife for this purpose. Either used an ax or just built the fires in a way that allows incrementally larger wood that doesn't require splitting. Maybe if I had to build a fire in a lumber yard? :)

    • @mvoutour

      I've always been able to just break sticks with my hands or stomp on them. It's faster and doesn't dull my knife. I think these "survival" nerds are really over complicating things nowadays.

Real men carried axes since axes were invented, I mean stone age, carried for all day and never complain, nowadays every city boy with a camera is teaching people that axes are two heavy and cumbersome, and immediately start smashing a knife with a baton while gasping for breath. Boy, I am 43 and I have splitting wood since I was a child carrying an axe all day long if needed and I remind you that a splitting axe weighs between 3,5-5kg. I carry a 2-3kg axe a knife and a backpack all day long and I am not gaping for air like this so called bushcraft, survivalist etc. Stay sharp and keep your knives sharp.

    I saw two things that concerned me in this video.
    1. The video star was attempting to baton the knife across the grain to process smaller pieces of wood..... How could he have expected great success with this move?
    2. When the video star broke the handle of the knife he was batoning the handle of the knife instead of the blade. Who hits the handle of a knife or and axe in order to drive it further into wood? As a rule if you only have a small blade knife you baton the knife through the outer side of the big log not the center..... It's just smarter
    Lastly I have one of these knives; it's well made but I do not like to use it because the serrated edge always gets in the way... I guess if I only had $80.00 and needed a knife I would look around before I bought the LMF ii, but failing a knife because the handle broke after you hit it is called stupidity; not catastrophic failure.

    Fair review, seems like the blade is a decent design and holds up well for only being 420HC.
    If they redesigned the guard to have metal just on that edge to protect the rubber and underneath plastic, but keeping the rest of the handle non conductive rubber then it'd be great.
    They designed it for military requirements so perhaps they'll improve it if soldiers have also found that design flaw and enough report it, apart from that I hear the military really like it.

    I experienced the same issue with my LMF, gerber did exchange it, kudos to them, however, I have realised at the end of the day it is designed as an aircrew escape and evasion knife. Lighting a fire is often not a priority for a downed pilot (evasion etc). And the handle and hilt assembly is designed to be shock resistant (electrical and impact). I agree that more thought should have been given to the strength of the hilt in the design phase, however IMO the company didn't envisage the product being used in the same hard wilderness use as a trailmaster for example.
    Great and thorough review, thanks :)

We spent a lot of time in the outdoors hunting, hiking, backpacking, etc. He was an Eagle Scout back in the day when they had a little more prestige I guess. The skills he taught me let me excel in the military. Some of the survival and tactical skills of some of our military members isn't that impressive.

    Great and informative review, as usual; thanks for posting. I actually bought the BK-10 along with the Gerber LMF II, after watching your reviews of each, plus the comparison vid, and, I think that they complement each other very well. I know that the LMF II suffered some damage to the guard during your batoning tests, but, as I didn't envision subjecting the knife to that kind of repeated, heavy stress, and, I like the plexiglass/glass breaker on the butt, plus the molded, non-slip grip, serrated edge and the excellent sheath, I thought it was worth buying. I think it's a great buy for the price of $63 on Amazon.com. The LMF has great balance and feels very solid in the hand. It's great to have all these awesome American-made knives from Gerber and KA-BAR for under $100.

    Dude why does everyone need to baton the crap out of knives, they're not made for that especially the LMF. The handle is made for comfort and batoning anything other then 2 inch sticks seems a bit silly. You do great vids and when I saw you start banging on that handle I knew it was gonna split, do you just do that to say "Look" it broke? Cause anyone with your experience already knows that it can't be hit at that point, a full exposed tang is for beating to death. I'm no outdoors men like you I just wonder if that knife was given for the review or was it your hard earned money? I have just started looking into getting a nice knife, and all these videos seem to use knives in a way their not ment to be used. Just because ya can doesn't mean ya should, bring an Axe, and if a knife is all ya have ya better be smart with it cause real survival depends on good or bad decisions , like beating a knife past its purpose. Anyways your vids are good and you proved that knife can take a beating, I'm just stumped on all the knife abuse on RUclips I'm sure this has been addressed many a times I'm new to this so you can tell me what for if ya want;)

      Just buy one based on the reviews and everyone beating the crap out of their knives you know they are tough. Even the Bear Grylls knife is a tough starter knife. If your are just starting out then they are good choices. You do not need a $550 knife to enjoy the outdoors. Hell half of the reviews are made in their back yards not in the deep woods or the big sand box. Take the reviews with a grain of salt. Gerber makes some strong knives for their price point! I own 2 and I have been a avid outdoor nut my whole life. Remember if you take a knife you need to take a sharpener (diamond rod is fine). They go hand and hand like gloves. Enjoy the outdoors and have fun... Just remember there are tribes that live in the jungle and they do not have $1000 knives and they did fine for thousands of years. A sharp knife will not replace a sharp mind!

I find the edge retention is an issue if you are cutting wire or plastics. nothing a few strokes on a diamond rod can't fix. A knife and a sharpener are a pair like a rifle and bullets. Outstanding Knife ....just don't baton the handle and its fine . Love the design and the sheath it comes with . Most of the reviews I have seen where military have actually carried this knife on active duty love it ...... I wouldnt call chipping the handle a " catastrophic failure ". The knife would still function perfectly . No need to baton the handle .

    Gerber has awesome customer service! Quick, fast and they usually ask no questions... That is why I went with a LMF, that and I got it 50% off $65 taxes in. I usually have a Para 2, SOG tomahawk and my LMF 2 or a Grohmann #4 carbon (life time warranty). another monster camp knife. Check it out sometime!

    I love the look of that knife and I hope it is a full tang knife too and would make a good survival knife as well as a good general purpose knife. That knife is a tough knife and I would not use it for batoning with and it isn't made for that. The blade is too short for that and I would buy one for a general purpose backup knife if in the forest or in an island environment.

    I see alot of thumbs down thats sad, Most probably haven't tried one, to me this knife n the prodigy are fantastic knives the prodigy I have the best results with handle comfort. That is nothi g against the higher dollar knives, but I personally have as good performance from some much cheaper than this as to some three or for times the price

  • @9SS94Cr
    @9SS94Cr 10 лет назад +1

    Judging from what I have seen from other destruction test on the LMF II, it is definitely indestructible with human force and reasonable abuse, as long as you don't hit on the handle with a sledge hammer or something. A lot people do report the upper guard may break due to batoning, however it does not affect on its performance.

      That is why I would go with a BK10 Crewman in a heart beat, same size and weight, but it has an exposed tang and made out of much better 1095HC not 420HC. I have put my BK10 through twice the abuse this LMF II saw and it has held up like a champ.

    • @9SS94Cr
      @9SS94Cr 10 лет назад

      gideonstactical Yes, as a outdoor sport knife, BK10 could be a superior design. LMF II has a lot military design features that normal outdoor's men won't need, like the pushed tang and the rubberized handle is for insulation and enable the user to cut live wire without worry of getting shock.

    In your opinion what would be a better survival everyday use knife, This Gerber or the Tanto Ka-Bar?

  • @PrestonGladd
    @PrestonGladd 10 лет назад

    See if you can pick up a boker plus armed forces fixed blade (or sometimes it's called tanto). They sell them at the clothing and sales( a military store) and on amazon!for around 39 bucks, 440C made in China, but is 13 inch, 7 and a qtr blade, full tang, g10 scales, built like a tank. Would love to see you thrash on that. I believe on amazon it's called boker plus armed forces fixed blade, the model number I have is tk216 but I think the amazon version is bo216

  • @BlueMagi6

    the reason its not full tang is its made to cut there electric wires without getting shocked

  • @richardvisneski506
    @richardvisneski506 9 лет назад +10

    Everyone seems to forget that this knife was specifically designed to cut your way out of an aircraft; therefore the rubber on the handle is a safeguard against electrocution. He failed the knife because the handle was marred and damaged but the same would happen to a becker and I would bet that the slabs on an esse or a rat knife would crack or fracture because they are so hard. In a survival situation you would not use your only knife to split up wood, it's too valuable a tool to risk, instead you would use smaller wood or you would find alternative ways to break larger wood.
    This is a bad video and should be removed, MLF?????? Honestly, can't you even get the name right???? And once you realized you made that kind of blunder why didn't you remake the video?

    The reason it broke is cause you arent supposed to hit the hilt when batonning your forearm should keep the knife straight. Also its not called the M L F

    I dont NOT suggest buying this knife as it not full tang as it is for air crew to cut themselves out of a cockpit, it is not full tang so that electriicty wont transfer into the handle and shock you

    i really compare most knives to Esee 1st and Mora 2nd - both sides of the price spectrum but both damn near bullet-proof and do everything i want/ need to do and I put my knives through hell and still they ask for more - as for warranty nothing beats Esee warranty and Mora is so cheap i have extras (still havent used 2 of them)
    You are the "go to guy" for me when i want to see a review so i really appreciate your input and think i will pass on Gerber yet again. They really need to get rid of crap steel and start going full tang. Sad

    This knife is really good knife, made for one kind of job, and one kind of people wich need to do the kind of jobs. Military, helicopter pilots, etc. We can not take the knife and use it for just bushcraft o survival/camping or whatever and said later "gerber suck". Because is really good doing the jobs for what it is created. If you crash your helicopter or just a car, and you need to go away cutting every thing and survive a couple days in a hostile environment, making bushcraft/survival shit, hunting, defend your self or every thing together,....this is going to be the knife. If you are a bushcrafter, hiker ,camper, etc, you can used with good results but you can find better knives for that. (sorry for my English at less I tried :-) ).

  • @Kris_Stiletto

    420HC compared to 1095HC.
    420HC is Low Grade American Budget Stainless Steel and is not true Carbon Steel; it is a Higher Carbon content Stainless Steel, as opposed to the Japanese 420J Stainless Steel or Surgical Stainless Steel, I thought...
    1095HC is a very good High Grade True American High Carbon Spring Steel, I thought... Which is a very strong and durable steel. But, it rust fairly easy and requires a lot of maintenance. Though, it has great edge retention and impact resistance and is easy to re-sharpen.
    420HC has better edge retention as compared to 420J. But, it does not have the edge retention of true High Carbon Steel and is not as tough and durable as Carbon Steel.
    If I'm wrong, please correct me...
    Stiletto :)

    Nice MLF. Ups ... I mean FLM. No wait, FML. Damned ! MFL ! Ah forget it.
    But seriously, souds real weired, when you say MFL the whole time. But never mind. Very helpful video. I have it too and I am quite content with it. Only the sharpener is very "tricky". One must really develop a good feeling how to work with it, otherwise there will not be much left of the edge. I recommend sharpening-training with cheap knifes first.

    I like that overall design of the knife and the sheath, but the failure of the guard and the lower quality steel make it a no go for me. You can buy a Ka-Bar, BK10 for $5 more then this knife on amazon. The Ka-bar will have better 1095 steel, full exposed tang, and a good sheath.

      I bought the full tang StrongArm with many , many carrying options. It’s now in my BOB/get Home/GTFO/ EDC daypack.No longer skinny enough to deploy, but this StrongArm also MOLLE attaches to my Plate Carrier.
      Buy what works for you and your : budget, game, camping, cool factor, carrying methods, comfort level, skill level, and finally “LCV”... looks cool value. H aha haha . Enjoy the outdoors!!

    It's not plastic first of all, it's rubber on the handle. Also when you baton, you hit the middle of the blade or the end of the blade, NOT THE HANDLE! Never the handle. Maybe you should look up how to baton.

    hi gidion, can u plse correct me if im wrong but in the bk10vlmf vid u said after u broke the handle the blade came lose, in this vid u said it didn come lose, also in bk10vlmf u say u believe 420hc on lmf to be as good as 1095 on bk10, but in the comments here u keep saying the 1095 is "much better" or "not as good", am i wrong?

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  10 лет назад

      Thanks for the question. To be clear, the knife handle broke. 1095HC is a better steel then 420HC. With that said, the 420HC from Buck and Gerber are not bad an ok edge and are almost as easy to resharpen as 1095. But I will take 1095HC over 420HC any day of the week.
