  • The roads of Italy are unquestionably some of the best driving roads in the world, usually surrounded by the most beautiful mountains, lakes and picture postcard scenes.
    With 48 hairpin bends twisting through Alpine perfection, the Stelvio Pass is there to be conquered. Whether you’re on a bike or four wheels, it'll certainly leave a lasting impression and inspire you to seek out other great roads of Italy.
    In this video, we park the truck and opt for two wheels to master the mighty Stelvio Pass, the fourth-highest paved road in the Alps.

      Yeah, it's a great biking road. We did 600km that day on the RT crossing several mountain passes in Switzerland and ended up in France, frazzled and buzzing. 👍🏻😁

    I cycled Stelvio in summer 2023 on my birthday its utterly awesome. It got to 35⁰C there were tons of cyclists, motorbikes, cars, all sorts, even a long distance rally from UK, and everyone was super respectful of each others vibe and safety, wonderful. Further east id Timmelsjock which is fun, with its motorbike museum near the top, and to the west is the Passo dello Spulga which is longer at 30km and has even more hairpins, 51!

      I done the Stelio in June just past on my touring motorcycle. As with All the passes I was on, I was in awe of the cyclists grinding their way up the road. I was sweating on a motorbike, I couldnt comprehend doing those inclines on a pedal bike.

      Funny enough, for 30 years we've biked/toured and loved it, the van things great but not full time, particularly when you want to carry lots of outdoor gear, suddenly you’re well over the weight limit.
      There's plans afoot which involve both, will share more shortly. 🙏😀

    Great video. I've been lucky enough to ride a motorcycke across Stelvio twice, once is each direction. Both times were in late Septemeber si the roads weren't too crowded. Where to next?

      Hi Brian, yeah we rode it late May (early morning) and it was a pleasure, I can Imagine late September's ideal.
      We're currently in the Dolomites (wishing we we're on a bike 😀) and heading southeast, eventually to Albania.

    thanks
    hanan

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Год назад +1

      Hi there if you’re coming from the north you can drive the pass all the way to the tunnels and then turn round and drive back. The tunnels are between the top of the pass and Bormio on the south side :)

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Год назад

      Hello, you can drive to the tunnels in a truck, but finding a turning point beforehand would be difficult,particularly when it's busy.
      You are restricted to 3.3m in height and a maximum vehicle length of 10m but we didn't see any weight restrictions. I hope that helps 🙏😀

  • @pedemeyer

    We just did the Stelvio Pass, and I think you made wise choice not to bring the van op there.
    We were behind a British van, that couldn’t make the sharpe turns, and they had to reverse at every single hairpin on the way down!
    I think it would be fair to say, that they were pretty stressed out by the impatient drivers, who had been looking forward to a very different pace going down🙁

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Год назад

      We think so too, as a biker having done the pass, I get the frustration of those looking to enjoy it. 🙏😀

    What is the best period/month to motorbike the Stelvio pass?

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  10 месяцев назад

      We rode it on a bike early May, still snow around but roads were reasonably quiet.
      So May to early June or mid-September until late October when the snow starts again.
      Best advice ride it before 0900hrs

  • @CG-99
    @CG-99 Год назад

    How do you identify in advance that there are tunnels with limited height?

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Год назад +1

      We have a truck sat nav but that doesn’t tell you the exact hight of the obstacle (just that it's not an option).
      It's usually through planning and research, in most countries it's never a problem as most bridges/tunnels are a minimum of 4m and usually 4.5m, but certain mountain passes with tight switch backs have tunnels, prompting us to check.
