  • Driving the new Hyundai IONIQ 6 EV - full review + crash test. The eagerly awaited brother of the successful Ioniq 5 is here and Jonny Smith drove the first RHD example on British roads. This is a 340 mile range (400 in city use) safety award winning 4 door electric family saloon that builds upon the dominance of Korean EVs. Enough to tempt you away from your Ioniq 5 or BMW i4?

The Ioniq 6 starts from £46,000 although this launch edition is £54,000. RWD and AWD versions are available, with 228ps and 325ps respectively. It's a more efficient, slippery car than the Ioniq 5, but the trade off is less boot space and cabin headroom.

I'm not in the market for an i20N, let alone an IONIQ 5 or 6, but I give Hyundai a lot of credit not just for their adoption and development of decent EV platforms but also their designs - they're making EVs that look eye-catching. I trust that the days when Hyundai (and KIA) were viewed as cheap Korean tat are long gone.

Tesla can lower prices because they don't put in a lot of the NVH materials and they have a lot of automation and only sell BEVs. But I don't think Hyundai can and not sell the cars at a loss.

This is one of the benefits of, for frontal impact especially, an electric car. No engine gives you a lot of room for crumple zones and absorption of forces. I like it.

I drove the original "windknife" Ioniq for 4 years until summer, when the lease was up and I switched to an EV6. Damn, I miss that efficiency, but the range wasn't fun for driving highways through Europe. The Ioniq 6 would be the perfect marriage of the original's efficiency and the new battery size & charging speeds, but somehow I think that Hyundai missed an opportunity by not giving it a hatch back just like the original Ioniq.

Just made my 10‘000 km since May 2022, including German Autobahn, track days on Anneau du Rhin, Swiss mountain routes and short distance drives this great car used 16,8 kWh on 100 km. A similarly equipped EQE350 used 23 kWh on about the same total distance. Keep in mind that the EV6 is not the small Hyundai Ioniq back in time and plays in another league now. This change happened in just one generation! Never seen that before in my 54 years driving ‚premium cars‘ mainly British, French and then German.😎🇨🇭

Great review. I love the look of all the Kia /Hyundai EVs and have test driven both the Ioniq 5 and EV6 recently as I have been doing some research for my next car. The design language that Kia /Hyundai are using is interesting and much better than some of the bigger / legacy companies (the BMW comes to mind...its like a 3/4 series but not a 3/4 series)
For me I need the room (I have older parents, young niece, mountain bikes, golf clubs) to cart around at times so the 6 unfortunately might not offer what I need despite its looks (also for me having a roof rack on an EV kinda defeats the purpose of its aero shape and will eat into the range really quickly) but your comment about it being a better drivers car than the 5 is interesting. I too found the 5 rather plush and languid and when I pushed it, it had a lot of roll.
More to think about I think.

Great review. Have had my Ioniq 5 since last April, 44K km's mainly motorway but plenty of Irish B roads as well-and its been amazing. The heat pump is essential and I think the 19" wheels suit the 5 much better-especially for poor road surfaces. Usually change every 2 years (due to high mileage), think I might go for the 6 in terms of efficiency and a sportier drive, but I still prefer to the looks of the 5 hands down.

So at 4.4miles/kWh it has very similar real world efficiency to a Tesla Model 3 RWD. Battery chemistry is important now too. The Ionic 6 may have a 78kWh battery, but because it is NCA, it can only be regularly charged to 80%, and shouldn’t be taken below 20% on a regular basis. That, and charging speed, is something that should become part of any EV review. It is more important than any 0-60 time.
I like your reviews Jonny. A passion for cars mixed with a practical approach.

Given Jonny was only getting 3ish mi/kWh in the cold I wonder if 4.4 is really going to be possible.
It's a shame, the difference between that and what I can get with my 28kWh 'wind knife' in this weather means it's about 30% less efficient than the 6 year old car (might only be 20% worse in the summer....) I'd love Hyundai to do one with smaller wheels and a smaller battery and sell it for a chunk less than a Model 3. Make it lighter and with less inefficient wheels and they ought to be able to increase the range above this one!

There's really a lot to love about this car. Efficiency and V2L (which sets it apart from Tesla) are probably the most important ones. I have my reservations about cars that beep at me without the possibility to turn if off though. I'm also not a fan of the stupidly big wheels most EV manufacturers feel we should want. No more than 18" wheels for me please (at most). Why make efficiency (i.e. range), comfort and acceleration worse than it has to be? And why increase running costs because of expensive tires that wear out faster? Don't get me wrong, I'm a tolerant guy but I wish the auto marketing departments would give us a break from their mandatory rubber fetish party and their "Let's see who has the most inches" competition.
I also still have a bit of mixed feelings about the design. Some lines and elements are beautiful while others sting a bit in my eyes. I think I could learn to like it but it's not the instant love I had with the Ioniq 5. I generally agree that the idea of making every new model unique and characterful is commendable though.

My wife is currently using a Tesla in Northern Ireland for work, she is working in the medical industry. Unfortunately as good as EVs are, the infrastructure of chargers are the key to their success. Some real world experiences we have had are only 1 Tesla dealership with only 4 superchargers available, no charging facilities in the country outside of cities, battery loss of charge overnight during the winter, chargers not working and spending weekends charging the vehicle for work on a Monday. Range anxiety is real and for me, they have put the horse before the cart in Europe and Australia, two countries that I have lived in. USA seems to have a better infrastructure from what I have seen. As much as the Tesla is great to drive not worth it for us. Electricity ⚡️ is also expensive.
