  • What's up guys! This morning I had the first session on my custom hand shaped surfboard Mini Super shaped by Shea Somma. It's literally a Mini Simmons packed with performance! I can't wait to unlock more when the waves get better! However this board is meant to be used as your "bad surf day" board!
    sommaspecialdesigns.com/board...
    Eat flat sections and chop for lunch
    This little shred stick packs a whole lot of fun into a tiny package. Short, wide, fast, and skatey, they make mincemeat of mushy surf, eating flat sections and weird chop for lunch. A hull entry into a deep, channeled concave running through the twin keel fins makes for an incredibly speedy yet forgiving design that both beginning and advanced surfers will find to be addicting fun.
    You'll start out using it as your "bad surf day" board, and suddenly you'll find yourself reaching for your Mini Super on those perfectly groomed offshore days "just to see how fast it'll go". The answer is: "very to extremely". Consider yourself warned.

    Board dimensions:
    5'4"x21.5x2 5/8 Vol: Unknown (I can roughly guess, it's around 35L).

    Love it, we made a custom 5-6 twin about a year ago, no channels, essentially a mini Simmons esque…really similar. It is my go to board under 1M. So fun. Really forgiving on entry, and fast down line. Turns well too. Highly recommend working with your local shaper to add one to your quiver. Have fun 😂😎🖤🐓

    The board’s entry speed was impressive, on those weak waves. N the somma made it look kinda fun! I thought, you surfed the Britt Merrick fins the best. N your switch foot is very smooth. Not as easy as it looks. Another good video

      Hey brother! Thank you the feedback! Yes, that’s one of the reason I decided to move on again with the Mini Simmons! I forgot how fun and easy it goes in small/tiny waves but the tweaks Shea has done to the board made more drivey and fun to do sharper turns! I can’t wait to surf Mini Super in much bigger waves! Cheers🤙🏼

      I had a 5’4 mini simmons it rides great but to paddle on it is the hardest thing to do. Is there any tips how to paddle on a mini sims? All of my friend tried my mini sims and they always told me ‘that is a hard board to paddle man’

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  11 месяцев назад

      @@primofareth5857 It depends on the mini simmons. May be it had more rocker or very foiled down overall. It's not gonna paddle like a longboard or mid length. You still wan to sit a little bit on the steeper part of the wave to catch it. I only surfed 3 Mini Simmons in my life and all of them were great.
      Hope this helps!

    Looks like you discovered the real benefit of getting a custom surfboard made specifically for you in the waves you surf. Off the shelf surfboards are great but they aren’t necessarily the right one for a surfer at their level of ability where they surf. I’ve been lucky to have had my surfboards shaped by a guy who knows how and where I surf and it has definitely helped me have more fun in the surf and progress.

    I have a surftech old school wide fishtail twinfin and a larger more volume 6'2' quad version of a soapbar mini simmons. I think they both work better as twins and frontside. Keep surfing

    How about the obvious comparison question to the Davey Sky Skiff?

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Год назад +4

      I sold my Skiff a few days ago for a few reasons. First of all, the board is amazing for small waves. It’s fast, skatey and fun! Less than 3 weeks ago during Fish Fry event, I surfed the original Mini Simmons that was shaped by Joe Bauguess over 20 years ago! I got inspired by Mini Simmons and quickly realized how easy the Mini Simmons catches waves and glides over flats. It’s much faster than Skiff which needs slightly bigger wave to go. I also feel like I oversurfed Skiff, I spent too much time on it and lost my passion.. may be the color bothers me! So, at Fish Fry I met Shea Somma in the water who happened to be in New York for a week shaping custom boards. Shea has a Mini Super model that is based on the Mini Simmons design. I decided to order a custom one and also asked him to add a center fin box to get more control! After my first session on Mini Super in the worst conditions, I realized that this board had everything in one package. I didn’t surf the waves with open face wave, I already know that it will go even better when that happens. The amount of speed, glide and control is insane! To be honest, I’m speechless and can’t wait to share more stuff soon! Hope this helps!

      Omg!! I saw one on Craigslist last year for $450! I should’ve snuggled it! But the size was kinda big.. 5’6”, chunky monkey! Lol I did watch his video on RUclips surfing it! It does look really fun! You can’t go wrong for small waves with the mini simmons!

      @@SkipperSurfReviewthat’s a steal! The size would of probably worked out for you if you don’t mind a little extra volume. The thing I like about the soap is that it really can hold up in bigger surf as well ! I surfed it at Rincon last winter in 4-5ft walled up surf and you can really draw some loose creative lines. I highly recommend looking out for one second hand!

    It could just be a bit of confirmation bias by me, but the drag added by the middle fin was really pronounced, it looked like you had to put a lot more effort in to get some momentum. I recently bought a Son Of Cobra round twin ruclips.net/video/wNw4FnuQcWg/видео.html and just pushing the board beside me as I waded out for the first time I could immediately feel that lack of resistance. Twins are so much fun in weak waves, that looks like a killer summer board, enjoy!

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Год назад +1

      Thank you dude! There is no point to use the trailer fin for small waves! The board is holding down the line as a twin pretty well in 3-4 ft surf.. However I was getting so much lift and when I was trying to initiate cutback, I kept losing control. After I added the trailer fin, everything went great. Unfortunately my Soloshot cam crapped out and I didn't get any footage but we are going to get some waves this week and I will try to post another episode with the trailer fin! Cheers!
