    In SMB3 bosses like Boom Boom and the Koopalings we’re unable to be hurt by the tail attack, but in Super Mario Maker 2 they can be hit with it!

      Mario used to do that, but once he threw a fireball that touched the vine, it burned down and Mario got hurt. Therefore he does not do it anymore.

      Fun fact: The direction of the fireball when being shot from a vine is decided by which foot is lower. If Mario’s left foot is lower, the fireball will go left.

    0:17 Correction: They're actually chained to nothing. The wood block was added in by the devs to "attach" the chain chomp to it, but it's not strictly necessary. And at the end of 2-5 there's a chain chomp without the block.
    *Super Donkey just looked at the level maps recently to see if there's an "unchained chain chomp" somewhere.*
    1:24 That was a thing since the GBA version.
    *Greenalink brought it to Super Donkey's attention in his SMB3 Vs. SMA4 comparison video.*
    3:11 When climbing a vine, Mario's facing direction constantly changes from left to right and vice versa. That's how the climbing "animation" works and that's why the fireball direction depends on the "animation" frame. It works that way in Super Mario World, too. There, you can find that out by just jumping off the vine. Depending on the frame, you'll jump off facing either left or right.

    You want some free differences? I got a ton:
    • P-Switches in SMB3 are completely unaffected by gravity-given that they are grabbable in Super Mario Maker, gravity will obviously apply to them.
    • Similarly, you can gently place a shell down in Mario Maker, but trying to do so in SMB3 will only kick it.
    • Coins and Blocks created by P-Switches do not rotate or shine respectively, and all brick blocks will visually become coins even if they have something inside. In Mario Maker, coins and blocks made by P-Switches WILL rotate/shimmer, but blocks with items inside will be unaffected.
    • Munchers turn into Empty Blocks when hit by a tail wag or shell in Mario 3-not Maker, though.
    • Spikeballs thrown from Spikes are unaffected by gravity and will only interact with Mario in SMB3, but in Mario Maker they interact with other objects and will either be crushed or start rolling if hitting an object.
    • Bloopers and Blooper Nannies cannot come out of the water (attempting to bait them into doing so will make them hit the surface), and do not interact with blocks in SMB3. In Mario Maker 2, they will readily come out of the water, and go through blocks similar to Mario 1.
    • Koopaling shells in SMB3 (and SMW!) can be easily jumped off of though can’t be interacted from below, but in Mario Maker, they will hurt you regardless. Lemmy’s Spinning Circus Spheres act similar in SMB3, but went the opposite route and became completely harmless in Mario Maker!
    • Lemmy did not move his wand to create his State Fair Orbs, and his wand overlaid his hand in SMB3. Neither of these are true in Maker.
    • Roy (and Ludwig) made the ground shake even when hitting the ground in their shells in SMB3. Although Roy still makes the ground shake (Ludwig doesn’t, though-that behavior was given to Morton), he does not do so while in his shell.
    • Bowser’s hitbox only really affected his top half in SMB3, meaning that if you are small or crouching, you would be completely unaffected by his ground pound attack-additionally, he did not make the ground shake. His hitbox was fixed in Mario Maker to encompass his entire body, and his ground pound attack will now cause an earthquake.
    • When Sledge Bros. caused an earthquake, not only would you be paralyzed, but you would jump off the ground, too! Only the paralysis was kept in Mario Maker.
    • Stretches are slightly taller, and come out of blocks more often-additionally, they can come out of almost any surface instead of being attached to a specific platform.
    • Donut Blocks were not semisolid, and after falling, would not return!
    • In his final fortress fight, Boom-Boom was completely unaffected by the conveyor belt on the ground, and moved normally. In Mario Maker, he is just as affected by the conveyor belt as Mario is!
    • Enemies in the way of coins about to be turned into blocks will not be crushed in SMB3, and blocks do not ‘block’ items from spawning beneath them either-but in Maker, being in front of a coin becomes a block will kill the enemy, and items will be stopped from fully leaving their blocks if there’s a block above it.
    • Green Cheep-Cheeps move in a straight line underwater in Mario Maker, similar to their behavior in SMB1 or the Blurps in SMW, but in SMB3 they would turn around, which is a behavior given to the Red Cheep-Cheeps instead. Side note: this means Green Cheep-Cheeps were the FIRST variety to turn around underwater!
    • Giant Koopa Troopa shells could be easily carried in SMB3, and Giant Goombas could be stomped on just as easily as regular Goombas. In Mario Maker, giant shells can only be kicked, and stomping on a giant Goomba will only split it into two more Goombas!
    • In the Snow theme in Super Mario Maker, Spikes will only throw Snowballs instead of Spikeballs-in fact, ALL Spikeballs become Snowballs. In the Ice Land stages of SMB3, of course, Spikes still throw Spikeballs, and Ptooies-which also use Spikeballs-are even introduced in these stages.
    • In World 5-3, Munchers can be seen at the bottom of pits with nothing holding them up. In Mario Maker, trying to do this will make the Muncher fall to its doom!
    • Lemmy’s Dazzling Beach Unspheres of Wonder will bounce off walls in SMB3 and stop midair if jumped on, but in SMM2 they disappear after hitting walls and are unaffected by Mario jumping on them!
    • All Koopaling blasts are colored according to the Koopaling in SMM2, which sadly doesnt happen in SMB3.
    • In SMB3, Piranha Plants coming out of sideways pipes will come out regardless of what you do. In SMM2 they’re a little more polite, and will not come out if you’re standing directly in front of the pipe.
    • Boos are much more slow and inaccurate while chasing the player in SMM2 compared to SMB3, though act more similar to their original behavior if given wings to work with.
    • Koopa shells suddenly gain a white rim when stomped on in SMB3, but use the same pale salmon they are normally in Mario Maker!

    It's interesting to see how many things were changed to be more in line with SMW & NSMBU, I wonder if it was intentional or a side effect of making most objects work across 4 different game styles.
    If we ever get a SMM3 I wonder if they'll make the styles even more accurate to their original counterparts or simply continue to "update" them. Might be the latter since a lot of sprites got redesigns to be more consistent across different styles.

      I really wish that was the case. Or make separate anniversary/collectors editions that have the original/all stars/advance versions. As well as an exclusive level editor for each version. Cause smb3 is way different from the rest. Also the walking hammer bros in the original smb1

    2:12 That is because, in SMB 1 and SMB 3 for the NES, only 1 power-up can be loaded on the screen at one time. If another power-up loads, it doesn't matter. The other power-up will unload anyways.

    The reason that the shorter piranha plants in the original are green is because of the NES palette limit. The NES can only support 3 opaque blocks per sprite, so a fourth color for red couldn’t be added for the normal sized piranha plants.
    However, since the stem and head of the big piranha plants are different sprites (just stacked on top of each other to look like one sprite), that means that they are able to have four colors.

    In SMB3, if you take damage as Racoon Mario, it makes the “racoon transformation” sound effect. In SMM2, it’s the “damage” sound effect.

    You know what else I miss from the classic vs smm series. Is when you tried to fight against an auto scrolling level. Mario would be pushed and continually skid until you moved forward. That was removed and now you can get stuck or fall behind off screen. 😜

    Hey looygi bros! I have a difference you might not know about! In smb3 if there was a progressive tonokie leaf on screen while you are super Mario and u lose the super Mario power up, and get the leaf u will just be super Mario. But in smm2, in the same situation, u will be tonookie Mario (or luigi )

    The airship physics. In SMB3 if a Bullet Bill is shot out, it'll still go in a straight line while the ship moves. Mario Maker 1 and 2, they move the same way as the ship moves

    Also Mario’s fire ball shooting animation went jumping and swimming. In the original Mario would look as if he was swimming in the air whenever he shoots fire balls. In smm/smm2 he doesn’t do that anymore. He does the standing still pose even underwater. Which looks as disturbing as the sound of scratching a chalk board. 😜

    Q: Why munchers turn into coins in SMB3?
    A: Munchers are actually coin blocks. When P-Switch gets activated, coin blocks turn into coins, so munchers are damaging coin blocks.

    In SMB3 the whipped shell dosn't have a flipping animation so it will just turn upside down without anything.......all though the SMM2 whipped shell has a flipping animation

      I think so too. Mario Maker is too limited in my opinion, making custom levels with other level editors is more fun

      I believe the real reason it happens was to prevent lag during most of the gameplay. It was said to be designed that way deliberately by programmers in order to prevent slowdown for most areas of the levels of the game.
