The entirety of Super Mario Bros 2 The Lost Levels is a troll
Actually, that's pretty much it's history. After releasing the first game, the Nintendo devs had an unofficial internal one-up contest to see who could make the most brutal level to troll each other. Much of this effort was packaged into SMB2, and when the US Nintendo President got the demo copy, he played in with his buddy, called up Nintendo Japan, and said, "No."
Thusly, Doki Doki Panic was reskinned as a Mario game and released in the US instead of SMB2, which was released much later as, "The Lost Levels."
So yeah, people trolling each other in custom Mario levels has been a tradition from the release of the very first game.

I remember after the brothers discovered they were more powerful, they started growing bigger and bigger and they couldn't stop. You forgot the most troll moment a Mario game will ever have, in Super Paper Mario there's a part where they ask Mario if he wants to save the universe, in normal circumstances saying "No" will active a loop that will go on until you say yes, but in SPM you get an instant Game Over.

I kept laughing at 3d world (15:05 The Great Goal Pole) , It was a complete disaster and everyone kept on dying 🤣
I actually made it through the Sudden Death round in Origami King (after I'd already beat it, of course, because I didn't want to do the whole Shy Guys Finish Last bit again if I lost). That Dream Team bit was so God damn elaborate! 😂 Seeing the Game Over made me go "wait, what?!" then cutting back to the Bros. at the fountain with the popup saying their HP and BP was restored REALLY threw me for a loop.

4:34 here's the point about the endless stairs. They are not endless, the Mario your playing keeps spawning back down at the bottom of the stairs without seeing the start of the stairs. I forgot how many loops there are but that's how the trolling works.

Doing the BLJ would normally mess up the speed and make you go really fast, enough to skip the warp.

I think they really missed an opportunity to troll players in the Shiftier Boo Mansion. The ideal troll would've been to make a couch that carries Mario over a void until he has no hope of jumping to safety, then slowly lowering him to his death.

Ok, well the third sunshine one doesnt really count. It’s your fault for leaving without grabbing the shine. You can do that in all of the 3D games.
The thing is: that pipe.
There isn't any level on Mario sunshine that ends with a pipe, since you can exit levels on pause.
Yeah he got the shine, but let's say he missed a coin, he could kill himself to restart the challenge, or enter the mysterious pipe at the end, which could be a restart level without costing life.
Yeah this happened with me, I missed a red coin and entered the pipe, and had to do all the 15 minute quest to get to that island again.
