RVK Newscast 160: A Mysterious Explosion

  • Welcome to RVK Newscast from The Reykjavík Grapevine. Editor-in-chief, Valur Grettisson (and his Chief Morale Officer, Pollý) are in Hvalfjörður to discuss a strange explosion that was recorded in the area, as well as the latest on Covid passes and Icelandic sports news.
    Representatives from the hospitality and tourism industries have come out in favour of Covid vaccine passports. This is in response the government’s current restrictions which some, especially restaurants, consider to be unfairly harsh and ineffective. Read more here: grapevine.is/n...
    Residents of Hvalfjörður were bewildered by the sound of a large explosion last night (19th January). The activity caused a tremor of magnitude 1.0, confusing scientists at the MET office, as seismic activity in the area is very rare. The mysterious explosion turned out to be connected with the local smelting plant, and was explained by the unusually calm weather, which meant it was detected much further away than normal.
    Finally, in sports news: world renowned Icelandic footballer Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson has had his bail extended after allegations of having sex with a minor in the UK. And at least five members of the Icelandic Handball team have contracted COVID-19 after their match in Hungary.
    Wondering what Zac Efron and the Reykjavík Grapevine team have in common? No, it’s not our incredible good looks (but thanks), it’s that we all love this chocolate: shop.grapevine...

    A great episode. Muddy Polly, Art the spy, Josie in the stream learning how not to throw a frisbee, and Valur braving the elements to give us news. What a team! If only all news broadcasts were like this. I must order some more Omnom, the last lot didn't last long at all. I particularly liked the burnt barley, but it's sold out.

    Poor Josie ending up in the river...and then throwing the frisbee again...back into the river! That did make us laugh! She certainly earned that chocolate - Omnom is gorgeous (esp coffee+milk, & black 'n' burnt barley, and the Winter Collection 😋🇮🇸🍫) RGV have been lifesavers keeping us stocked when we couldn't visit! In Québec Canada, we now require vaccine passports for the cafés, SAQ (our Vínbúðin), and marijuana stores. It pushed vaccination rates past 80% because people want their buzz. 😆 It can’t block Omnicron, but helps keep hospitalizations and ICU admissions manageable until it becomes endemic like seasonal flu. Idea for the Icelandic authorities to consider. Good luck!

    The Covid rules here in the Netherlands are also very confusing. Here the bars, cafes, restaurants and theaters are all closed. The shops are open. All the sport is without public. And you can invite four people at your home. And stil the numbers of positive tested people are rising every day. Quite a lot of people have their boostershot. So there is quite a lot of discussion over the rules. People are angry and want there normal live back. We have to be patient. It is what it is.

    • @thomasmaughan4798
      @thomasmaughan4798 2 года назад +2

      "Quite a lot of people have their boostershot."
      Obviously it isn't as effective as advertised. In fact, it appears the booster makes a person more susceptible to Omicron, at least for a while. There's several reasons for that -- by suppressing Covid-19, it allows for other strains to flourish and become dominant.

    Rule of thumb for vaccines is that an 80% effective vaccine to 80% of the population can stop an epidemic. Early results had very effective vaccines, so possibly could get a way with 70% pop. Unfortunately the effectiveness drops quickly with these vaccines, so now need 95% to get same effects as the first few months at 70%. Omicron also does not seem to be slowed much by vaccines, thus the current big spikes around the world. The better suppressed the early waves the bigger the current wave.

    In BC CANADA we have to show a vaccine passport to get into a restaurant. It is on my phone. I don't think it's a bad thing. It gives you some confidence that those around you are less likely to have Covid19. Mostly it will be good when it is just part of life and we can all deal with it like we do with the flu.

    Footballers and sex scandals - no one addressed this VERY COMMON issue. Thanks for bringing it up. I hope the truth can be set free in that case. I have worked w so many sexual assault survivors in my former career and can attest that there is never real “justice” for them. If the footballer is guilty I hope he does lose everything bc the survivor must live with the choice he forced on them forever as well.

      The common cold does not kill many people, and the others are not easily preventable by wearing masks and getting vaccinated. The whole point is for everyone to do what they can to keep this disease from ricocheting around the human population and evolving into something far worse before we can get better vaccines. If we just give up, it will only be a matter of time before it can evolve into something truly terrifying. At this point we do not even understand the long term medical issues that are being noticed in those that have had it.

      @@glenntroyer I have been saying that Covid is here to stay since last year. There are always individuals who won’t comply with the necessary restrictions and so the numbers of cases grows. It’s happening everywhere. Even with vaccine available, some folks won’t comply. Get used to the masks, people!
