- Stop using vinegar, its ruining your pumps (slowly). Using citric acid or muriatic acid is the way to go! If you have time on your hands, citric acid is safer to work with however we usually need our powerhead pumps back in the tank pronto, so muriatic acid is the ticket. In this video we discuss why vinegar is slowly ruining your pumps and why you need to switch. I clean my pumps in about 10 minutes using muriatic acid! it's so Fast! You can find it at Home Depot or Lowes.

This video only needed to be 4 minutes long. Thanks for the info.
The way you described ramping pumps up over time, clean the pumps and then dial it wayyy back - wow that is 100% me
Great video ! but my concern is on the internal bearings or bush's ??? are they still in tact and if so how long for...have you had any problems with them till now ??
PS, if i was to use the miss's bottle brush, i would be divorced
Baking soda will neutralize the acid
this video could have been done in 1 minute...
Right I need to clean my self priming over flow box it full of vermitant snails and them tiny snail like dots so I have ordered a new one I want to soak this for a few weeks and keep it as a spare I want something that is not going to affect acylic or it's bonding cement
Vinegar is bad. Use citric acid
Great info thank you!! :)
Completely off subject.... but.... I could not stop staring at your tank in the back. The one with the blue light... yeah. The way your rocks are set up and the way the shadows are playing on them makes it look like you have a gigantic lizard fossil perched on that rock. 😀
Hmm, no one answered your question! Chelate is pronounced "key-late".
Thanks for the info!
Great video. Good advice. Just one comment please wear protective eyewear. I work in ER and you don’t want to see what an acid splash will do to an eye.
I'm Skipper of the yacht base on my manual book operation it will recommend vinegar. 😳
My chem teacher always said "do as you oughtta add acid to watta..." which you certainly did! Nice video.
Wow, i use it for the tanks but not for the gears :) For that i use citric acid way more safer (btw we are nearly clone)
Excellent video! I enjoy your personality and knowledge. Keep the great content coming please!
Your wife is gonna kick your arse..... lol.
😂🤫
I have yet to do a proper cleaning of the flow pumps. What do you think the best way to clean pumps that completely in the water? I just don't if anything would eat in to the electric part of them. I have the sunsun wave maker jvp-101 with the suction cup.
In that case I would use citric acid
@@RealReefingTV thanks
Will this damage the cables? Say like the Nero 5 where the cable is attached.
I don't believe so, where that cable is attached it is water tight and the acid wouldn't be able to get in so you should be fine. The vinyl coating the wire should be good, if there are any cuts in it that would be a problem
Great vid man! Muriatic makes me nervous but I'd feel good about citric!
I was too for sure. First time I used it was for curing dry rock and that was insane, but this was a breeze and done in minutes, so worth the extra precaution.
@@RealReefingTV Thanks for the vid!
I have a 75 gallon saltwater tank and I have these over flow jets at top for water flow how do i clean them
Can you remove them?
@@RealReefingTV I'm not sure I have 3 tanks this is my 1st saltwater tank and I've had it about 4 years and replaced 3 times the sump pump under the tank but here lately the water does not seem to flow as quick as it use to if I mess with them much I'm afraid I will really mess them up but don't want my fish to die either because the flow has slowed
@@nanreid8792 the pump below should only act as a means of moving water through the sump to be filtered ( mechanical and chemical). You should also have powerheads moving water in the main display of your tank that is doing the main work of moving water around.
@@RealReefingTV yes that's what I think may be clogged
Great information and demo on pump care thanks for sharing
Yeah no doubt! I was actually really excited to learn this. I've cleaned the overflow weirs and strainers just recently too using muriatic acid and it's a breeze and so fast! Def a game changer.
would you recommend cleaning a skimmer like this ??
Probably not only because skimmers are so big.. I used citric acid on my skimmer. Put the acid solution in a storage tub, put the skimmer in and ran it over night... Had to move it outside because of the smell but rinsed off good as new next day
@@RealReefingTV it is a small skimmer , that has never been cleaned , hang on back, Plus I already have a gallon of muriatic acid . would you try it then ?
@@SonOfDrTito yeah if you can submerge entirely but I would disassemble and set it in the solution.
@@SonOfDrTito don't run the pump though
@@RealReefingTV worked perfectly just like you said , I would totally recommend this to anyone looking to clean their pumps and gear , looks super new too.
That's awesome bro. I mean I work in a chemical plant so I understand acids. Just never thought of using in reef tank. Very good content
Thanks Joe, I've been using muriatic now to clean small stuff and it works really quickly so it makes the chore a little easier.
