I ended up having to take my tires down to 4PSI and then pretty much had no problems. But I would be curious to see how this XT would do in deep sand.
I just paid off my 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i, and I'm not in a hurry to go back into debt. However, your video shows me that the 2020 makes up for what the 2013 lacks in off-road chops, and tempts me heavily.
I have a 2020 Forester so different engine, CVT and gearing. But would love to see a pinch/tilt incline/decline test with the degrees to match. I have on stock tires at full air done 15-18 degrees with little drama. Everyone always talks about the need for a low range and locking dif . I’d love to see you test this things limits on inclines. And just for “fun” see if this can get close to the course Jeep uses for the Jeep Experience at the auto shows. We went one and it was fun, but their cost Mpg and practicality aren’t a good fit for our family right now. Anyways I’d love to see some “extreme” climbs with degrees. Keep up the good work, I hope you and your family are well!
Given how the biggest concern by so many is the CVT overheating, I think it would be interesting to see a service road with an extended incline; not with the idea of breaking the car or pushing it past its limit, but more to see how capable it is (hopefully) and to quell some of the concerns. I do a lot of driving on service roads, so I really appreciate your channel that puts, “soft-roaders” against the kind of realistic service roads/backroads that many hikers/climbers/campers might see, vs unrealistic off-road trails that would typically only be run in a truck or Jeep. I found your V60 Cross Country video very informative and it makes me curious how other, “soft-road,” vehicles with off-road modes would do, such as the BMW X5 or VW Tiguan, or even just popular vehicles with AWD systems, like the Acura RDX. I realize I’m far from the typical car shopper, but many of my peers are in the same boat of trying to find realistic reviews of such vehicles, so please keep up the great content!
Very envious of this vehicle. I drive a 2006 Forester, back when the forester was a beefed up wagon rather than the SUV it is today. We will probably end up getting a gently-used lower-trim Outback in another couple years. But boy would we love an Onyx XT with all these upgrades. Can't justify the $$$$ though.

I have a 2019 Outback (obviously not the turbo) and it tows an approximately 2,000Lb boat just fine, and still gets 18-20mpg. Does work a bit in hills but not that much.
Nice! I have a white Onyx XT...have already swapped the stock tires for Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail tires and they've done well on some of the Forest Service roads in the northern Georgia mountains. Will be interested to see what you pick and how well your selection works. Great video!

Is the XT on 18"s? If so, are you thinking of going with a 17" to add a little more sidewall? Which AT tires have you been looking at? The Forester sport has a few options in the 225/60/r17 range, I've also seen others in 225[215]/65/r17, but I'm unsure if I want to go that tall...it may affect the suspension geometry and I'm not planning on a lift until further down its life.

Please drive it down a steep hill and stop. Then back it up the hill 30 feet. At what angle will the CVT give up due to overheating? I was faced with this situation above Leadville Colo in our '05 OBXT when a rough but not "jeep trail" mine rock road turned into a large bolder path on what I would say was about a 30 percent grade. The 5EAT handled it fine once the torque converter locked up. I don't have the same faith in a CVT based on what I've seen with the computer cutting power.
Hi with your long term trial i want you to record CVT oil temp with outside specially in very hot day. I don't know if the big screen can access to this information, i hope subaru did it. If not you can have a OBDII bluetooth reader like blue driver or VEEPEAK with an apps to read this info live. I'm really impress by what i see in the part 3 of this series. This outback has an transmission oil cooler or not??? Near the end of your trial if you can find CVT oil life in % like after 10-15000mi with many offroad adventure with maybe few towing small trailler with 1800lbs to test the CVT toughnest... Thanks in advance for your info.
Other things that make no sense? Tachometer dominates the driver's display even though its CVT only. No tactile buttons for most controls making the big display super distracting. Giant display can't go fullscreen in android auto. They put the intercooler at the top of the engine bay and heat rises, so you're basically cooking the intercooler whenever you're not in motion, ruining efficiency.
@@BoopSnoot The intercooler is there to allow you to drive through water up to the intake, which this vehicle can most certainly do with ease; I do think they should have added a hood scoop like the WRX, or old outback XTs though... I suppose it had something to do with the EPA ratings.
Cool video. I have a 19 Ascent with most of the same features. I've towed a flat deck trailer but hope you give a try to say a 30' RV - I'm guessing you have the same 5,000 towing capability. The Ascent is a bit longer but I find with the 3rd row of seats always down I just have more storage. The Ascent has captain chairs in the back a very nice option. Do you have the cooled seating? I don't have the Premier edition but wish I had the rear mirror camera a very good option. The backup camera is great for a trailer - you should get it in the first try. Looking forward to the next video, a great location to put the Outback to a great test!
I plan on visiting the PNW one day. Maybe I can join @DrivingSportsTV and do this trail. I suspect, if my many off-road adventures are any indication, that with my all terrains, the Ascent will easily breeze through it. I am very impressed with the FA24DIT/TR690 drive train that the Ascent and Outback XT share.
Test drove one of these XT's and considering it as a family vehicle. Currently driving a '17 Impreza Sport, but the added room in the Outback, especially with those rear seats folded down, makes a lot more sense.
I went from a 2011 WRX hatch to the new XT and have loved every moment of it. It's not as fun to drive on curvy roads, but the ride is 100x smoother and it is such a better family vehicle.
I have a manual forester that has been great although it would be much much more fun with the turbo. I had a forester xt, but was not happy with the cvt, power was good but I question the reliability of the cvt. In your opinion, do you think the newer cvt engines are any more reliable than the cvt in the 2014 forester xt? Right now, it would be hard for me to buy another subaru cvt.
Nice.... so how do upgrades like changing rims and tires and adding a lift, possibly a wench affect factory warranty or their extended warranty? What can a Subaru owner do that doesn’t void a warranty and what can’t they do?
One more thing. I downloaded an vibration app and a decibel app to compare the rides and the quietness of the Ascent. It was amazingly smooth as compared to previous Infinity FX45 and the Honda Truck. On the same road the FX45 tested at approx 5.1 vibration, the Honda was much better at approx 4.3 but the Ascent was amazing at a 3.0. The longer wheel base might make the Ascent a bit better than the Outback. I continue to be amazed at the ride of the Subaru, not something they talk much about.
I very much enjoyed your video. 2 questions. How did the turbo function with the awd system as opposed to the Outback you used in December? Does the turbo give any advantage over the 2.5 engine in difficult conditions { snow, mud etc}. Second, how does the auto/stop system work in the turbo as opposed to the 2.5 engine? I am torn between getting the touring with the 2.5 or the Limited with the turbo. thank you.
In slow, crawling situations there’s not a noticeable difference between turbo and non-turbo. But Dual X mode can make challenging conditions easier. We’ll be seeing how much easier in future videos with the Onyx XT. Didn’t notice any difference between start/stop in turbo and non-turbo applications. In the video we didn’t disable it.
Hey! Great video! I have a question I was hoping you could answer. I have the same vehicle spec but in dark grey and am considering the rockford fosgate upgrade. How would you say it sounds for music and podcasts/audiobooks compared to the stock system (if you had a chance to hear that). One other question about the system. Someone on a forum said after they had it installed, the music shut off when turning off the engine (they thought maybe it was because the new amp drew more power from the system), whereas normally the music would stay on until you opened the door even if the engine was shut off. Can't wait for the next videos in the series!
I can't speak for an Outback with the Rockford Fosgate but on my 2020 Crosstrek optioned with it, the music stays on after shutting off the car and does not turn off until I open the door. Mine also is the 6MT if that makes any difference.
I love Subaru and we own an Outback I just wish there was more aftermarket support/performance parts and tuners for something other than the WRX/STI. Also how about a low gear Subaru?
The other problem is not these normal PNW trails you go on, it's the deeper washouts that stop non "offroad" vehicles like this. That is the REAL test. I could do this course in my 97 obw
Curious. I’ve been really going back and forth between this and the Passport. The Passport doesn’t have a CVT and I feel like a better AWD system. I’ll def be following along. Great content.
Alex Martens the only competition still on the market that rivals Subaru AWD would be Audi authentic Quattro(not haldex). Nothing comes even close, I’d take a unique spec’d Subaru with some personality than a fleet vehicle that Honda pumps out, and every suburban mom drives currently.
@@dylankoch9661 I disagree with that completely. Honda and Acura's SH-AWD is far superior than the Subaru system. And there's a lot of car reviews where Subaru's CVT over heats. That's the killer for the Subaru is the terrible transmission.
I love my Touring XT, but I sometimes wonder if the Onyx would have been the way to go. I got worried about driving in hot summer weather and the breath-ability of the StarTex. It was the ventilated seats that sold me and I definitely enjoy them.
We have a ascent. I would have gotten a outback , but I didn’t have enough room for my left leg. If the dead pedal was a little smaller I would be driving a Outback.
They're not so bad. It's pretty much the future of cars, so you may as well get used to it. Besides, Subaru and Honda offer two of the best CVT's in the business.
If you had optioned an XT Touring, instead of the Onyx, you actually get a single disc CD player, which is oddly mounted in the center console. That's the one I purchased in February. I will say this however, it is very difficult to find many XT Touring Outbacks on dealer lots and there isn't much color choice if you can find one. I found a good one in Renton, and it is that "Magnetilite" (anthracite) color. The Onyx trim seems to have a larger variety of colors available on dealer lots. I like the blue color you have a lot.
I'm curious to know if the shift knob is slightly sloppy? Ours has a slight click or knock, it's just the slightest bit loose, kind of annoyed since it has less than 200 miles on it

Should've done a black chrome.
@@BoopSnoot The intercooler is there to allow you to drive through water up to the intake, which this vehicle can most certainly do with ease; I do think they should have added a hood scoop like the WRX, or old outback XTs though... I suppose it had something to do with the EPA ratings.
Alot less chrome then the limited and premium
Amazing video, do this with the Ascent in this same road test please & thank you!👌🏼👍🏼👏🏼💯🦾
I plan on visiting the PNW one day.
I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on the Rockford sound system since you can’t get the HK found in the Limited and Touring trims.
We were told no upgrade option for Rockford sound system on our 2020 Outback XT Onyx did Subaru add availability recently?
Test drove one of these XT's and considering it as a family vehicle. Currently driving a '17 Impreza Sport, but the added room in the Outback, especially with those rear seats folded down, makes a lot more sense.
I went from a 2011 WRX hatch to the new XT and have loved every moment of it. It's not as fun to drive on curvy roads, but the ride is 100x smoother and it is such a better family vehicle.
There is an optional CD player. It goes in the caddy under your elbow. But it’s a steep $300.
Nice video, I am just wondering if the turbo improves the off-road performance or is the N/A engine is all you really need for to go on the fire roads
So far I’d say you don’t “need” the turbo. But the power is nice for the highway out to the hills.
I wish they would add a hood scoop for all turbo Subaru models
cowl?
Nice.... so how do upgrades like changing rims and tires and adding a lift, possibly a wench affect factory warranty or their extended warranty? What can a Subaru owner do that doesn’t void a warranty and what can’t they do?
Like ur vids. Like seeing everyday drivers being pushed .this way I know what my car will do if I go off road
I have a 6spd manual outback and would never get a cvt, although I would love the rest of the car.
When was the last year they offered a manual in the outback?
@@MNsaint awesome, thanks for the reply! Are you happy with the upgrade? I'm thinking of having it installed in June.
The blue color looks epic
Add a 2”-3” lift, all terrain tires and wheels.
Yeah, I might do that
3" lift on a Outback? I guess you enjoy replacing axles and cv joints/boots
I love Subaru and we own an Outback I just wish there was more aftermarket support/performance parts and tuners for something other than the WRX/STI. Also how about a low gear Subaru?
Heavy cargo!! Steep hills!!!!!!
The other problem is not these normal PNW trails you go on, it's the deeper washouts that stop non "offroad" vehicles like this. That is the REAL test. I could do this course in my 97 obw
Perhaps towing? I tow a 13ft Scamp with my 2010 outback. Could use more input on the topic.
Shawn-Paul Luchin up to 3500 lbs max capacity with the XT trim editions. Aka the turbo engines.
I don't think there is a better awd system on the market (not including low ratio etc)
Didn’t the passport AWD overheat?
@@dylankoch9661 I disagree with that completely. Honda and Acura's SH-AWD is far superior than the Subaru system. And there's a lot of car reviews where Subaru's CVT over heats. That's the killer for the Subaru is the terrible transmission.
I had a new outback. It was a LEMON from day one. Subaru does not stand behind their cars. Go with ANYTHING other than the Subaru.
C'est la meilleure véhicule 4WD et AWD du monde !
I'm opting for the Touring XT trim for the ventilated leather at my wife's request. I just keep looking at the Onxy and wondering if that'd be wiser.
I love my Touring XT, but I sometimes wonder if the Onyx would have been the way to go. I got worried about driving in hot summer weather and the breath-ability of the StarTex. It was the ventilated seats that sold me and I definitely enjoy them.
Thank you Alex. That's much of our justification too.
We have a ascent. I would have gotten a outback , but I didn’t have enough room for my left leg. If the dead pedal was a little smaller I would be driving a Outback.
Roof top tent please? Australian camping conditions - 8in snow max.
Thanks. Enjoyed your video.
Great job! You show you care, don't change my fellow American!
the cd play is in the center console
THE CVT TRANSMISION IS A DEAL BREAKER FOR ME. i HAVE AN OLD SUBARU THAT HAS A NORMAL TRANSMISION AND i LOVE IT.
kong adong agreed. What year do you have? I had an 05. One thing that bugs me is that the new outbacks are humongous now 🦛
They're not so bad. It's pretty much the future of cars, so you may as well get used to it. Besides, Subaru and Honda offer two of the best CVT's in the business.
Great review !, I have a Forester 2021 with dual xmode, is it as capable as this onyx?
Yes more even. Better approach angle..
But then - no dual X Mode!
@@drivingsports I know, that's the downside. But, admittedly, I'm not traversing the Snoqualmie river in mine, like you are. :)
Great vid, look forward to part 2
I'm curious to know if the shift knob is slightly sloppy? Ours has a slight click or knock, it's just the slightest bit loose, kind of annoyed since it has less than 200 miles on it
My only complaint is the stock tires. Replacement sure, but know one will buy the orginal as they're not all seasons
8:38 Tire profile too low for this terrain.
Seems like you are in the PNW. Would love to find this trail to take my blacked out (Onyx'ifide) 2020 Outback XT Touring.
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THE 4 CYL TURBO/CVT COMBO IS BETTER OFF ROAD THAN THE REGULAR 4 CYL NA/CVT.
DOES THE TURBO/CVY COMBOS CVT OVERHEAT WHEN PUSHED LIKE THE 4CYL NA?
If we ever overheat it, we will defiantly include it in a video.
How about that 180* front view camera? It's useful when going over those peaks.
You should get the brake calipers painted neon green to finish off he Hawks colors 😎
Driving Sports TV Where is the rock garden road? Cascades NP?
