- Ryan has a full review of the all-new 2020 Subaru Outback, then he gets behind the wheel of a 2020 Outback XT Onyx (Turbo) to test the 0-60 time, try out the lane-centering technology and put Dual Mode X Mode to the test. Does this new Outback have what it takes to bring more customers to the Subaru brand?

Cinematography in this was beautiful! Really want this 2020 outback now. 😖
We just started building the new 2020'S today in Lafayette In. They will be at dealers this fall!! They're looking good.
Whoo! Comment got pinned! Super excited for the xt comeback. With a nice set of tires, that little angled uphill will be nothing for this outback!
Just ordered one only 495 more than the 2019 premium is the most bang for the buck. Onyx is 6 grand more
Look at Buick tour x instead
come to our dealership and i'll give you $3,000 off. we're generally only doing 2,500 on the higher end models like the ones in the video
I just bought my first subaaru outback.i have be a ford and dodge man for 60 years.this out back is fabulous. I have only had it for 4 days.this is going to be fun
I'm a jeep dodge chrys tech, drove a 21 cross trek sport & bought it, fun little car & pulls a small boat lots of traction.
We bought our first Outback last year (2021). It’s my wife’s commuter car and our road car.
We live in north central WA state up in the mtns on a private road that we have to plow and maintain ourselves.
We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter.
We’ve found that the Outback is far superior over any other 4WD or AWD vehicle that we’ve ever owned.
We love it so much that a few days ago we replaced our 11 Rav 4WD Limited with the 3.5 V6 with a slightly used Forester Touring, (Sephia Bronze with Brown leather interior).
The Mtn passes are closed due to snow, so we’ll go to Seattle ASAP to pick it up.
It’s a 2019 and get this, it has only 4,700 miles on it.
I’m retired and in my late 50s. I only drive about 5K miles a year, so I doubt I’ll ever have to buy another vehicle before my death.
I just bought my first Subaru Outback Onyx XT. Really enjoying it.
How is the car after four years?
The change from physical buttons, such as on the 2019 Outback, to touchscreen is not only cumbersome and awkward but is also dangerous. To operate the touchscreen functions takes the drivers attention off the road. Physical buttons can be a learned and natural movement, without taking the drivers attention off the road. - I hope you’re listing, Subaru.
I LOVE my infotainment. I have no issues what so ever and I also use voice control when I need too. Hope Subaru is listening to this also. 😁
Completley agree, I'd so much rather have buttons. I'm still probably going to end up with the new Outback because it's ecactly what I want from my next car, but not having the physical buttons will be a bit of an annoyance.
OK grandpa.
@@chooseymomschoose OP is totally correct. You'll understand when you're older. And work on your lame comments, spice it up a bit. Add some swears or something clever at least.
and when the screen stops working...
Seriously, along with bezel-less mobile phone design, please stop using touch screen for every single thing in a vehicle, tactile feedback is not replaceable.
Which is a good point. Are there haptics in the display?
yes!
👏👏👏👏👏👏
have old vehicle just in case lol
Ikr? Especially in vehicles where you want to be able to operate most functions without taking your eyes off the road for too long
Excellent review, especially the detailed X-Mode demonstration.
I went with the Forester because I cant stand climate controls being handled digitally. Had it on a Honda and it was terrible.........Something that little was a deal breaker for me.
There are still physical buttons for front and rear defrost, and temperature change for both driver and passenger at least.
💯 3 knobs just like 3 pedals should be preserved.
Bring back the knobs !!!!
I'm so glad I went with the 2019 with the 3.6 itd be very hard to beat in my eyes
HR-V? From my understanding, CR-V should have the physical buttons for climate control. Honestly, I agree with you, I would much prefer physical buttons and knobs for the the climate control as well as heated seat and X mode.
The paddle shifters are totally necessary in winter climates with hilly terrain. I use my paddle shifters down huge grades in the snow almost daily in the winter.
We already had all the “press” knocking the cvt because it didn’t “feel” like a standard transmission. That was one of the best parts - my new 2019 now has a lag simulating shifts that my 2011 didn’t suffer from. I prefer the 2011.
Paddle shifters and CVT - just a great combo where I live. Keep it up Subaru. I own 4 Subarus from 2003 to 2019.
Great review as I have come to expect from your channel. I have a 2019 Forester but I want this 2.4L turbo engine! Though I am not a fan of replacing the physical controls with digital equivalents. Anyway, keep up the good work. Your reviews are consistently the most intelligent, professional, and visually appealing on RUclips.
I have a 2018 Forester XT 2.0 Turbo. This Forester is sleeper fast!
Makes me want two of the Outbacks . One for my husband and one for my son . It would be great if they offered deals on two cars if you bought them at the same time . Great post . Thank you .
The manual mode on the CVT is useful for when you want to keep the rpms consistent like driving in snow, crawling off-road or engine braking on the downhill. I use mine most when I'm scared shitless driving down a super icy road and I don't want to touch my brakes. I agree though, it's mostly useless except a few special situations.
Really I can see it good for mountain driving so you don't kill your brakes.
Ya beat me to it and yup, they work great for this. I engine brake all the time.
I use the paddles all the time. It's great for snow, going up/down hill, merging onto the highway, etc.
our rental in colorado was a 2018 outback with full everything. we tried the paddle shifters on the way down from pikes peak and they were extremely useful. (consistently braking hard on a downhill when its 40 degrees outside causes your rotors to warp quicker. engine braking will prevent that)
Best 2020 Outback review I've seen so far - thank you! Subscribed.
You actually get a compact spare with all trims except the Onyx, which gets a full-size spare. They’re under the tool tray.
And the full size spare has the same wheel as the other 4 tires. This was a surprise to me when I picked up my new Onyx. Usually the manufacturer will use the cheapest wheel they can find for the spare, which means you can't use the spare during tire rotation and get longer life out of your first set of tires.
@@roy-whereamI you shouldnt be rotating just 1 on, youll ruin the car lol
I have to congratulate you on the video production quality -- and your review is the real deal. I have a couple late-model Outbacks and love them.
One of the top notch reviews that I have ever seen on any car till date. Super awesome job. 👍 right now I am in the market for a SUV here in Canada. My eyes are set on Acura RDX & Honda Passport, but after seeing this video (and bit more research) I have dropped Passport in favor of Outback. Finally who ever gives me the best deal will get my cheque
I do not like that every controls are in the touch screen, specifically climate controls.
There's some hard buttons for climate.
Burkhan imaine if your enfortainment break. You couldnt control heat or ac ...
Boooohoooo to bad
Keep up with the technology man or you get left behind.
Brilliant move making sure that the driver has to take their eye of the road and look at the tablet for just about every adjustment they might want to make. Hopefully there is a more than adequate voice control feature available as standard equipment. :(
I use paddle shifters in the mountains for engine braking. Some CVTs have a "low" mode that lets the revs higher but it gives a medium performance in the mountains. I am glad the paddles are there but I realise I might be edge case scenario.
Hopefully this Outback is more comfortable for me than Forester, which seems to be targeted for ordinary height people - over 5'5 :)
Just wanted to let you know that I am huge fan of this review of the Onyx, so much so I went out and bought one last night based of your thoughts of the car. I love it! It’s even better in person, the power is exceedingly great, the handling is better than expected, and its wildly comfortable inside.
Thanks for making great content, it pays off!
Did you have any concerns with engine or transmission? That is the only thing I am hesitant about. I am thinking of getting the Onyx trim level.
Adam - what are your thoughts on the stereo since it’s not the good HK one?
Wife picked out the Onxy XT 2020 and loves it. So much he is not covering here but it rolls down the road and will fit most folks needs.
I understand why most car reviews never show the base model, but seriously, that's what most people can afford.
Check the dealer channels for base model reviews. They recognize that's where the sales are but if you're trying to create buzz, excitement or a change from the ho hum same ole same ole it's these kinds of reviews that get people looking deeper into the brand. Imho anyway.
I had the opportunity to test drive the Onyx yesterday from the local dealer. My current vehicle is a '02 Toyota Tacoma with 280k+ miles. All of my previous vehicles have been SUVs or trucks. The bottom line - I haven't owned a vehicle that could be considered quick or sporty in any way.
Took the Onyx up the highway, laid on the gas while already up to speed and it had plenty of passing power. Exited the highway, then got back on in the other direction. The merge is under construction so it's a short one, and I purposely waited until the last second to hit the gas hard, just to see how much pop the Turbo engine had. Went from about 20 to 65mph in such quick fashion that I yelled "Holy sh$%!" Once again, coming from somebody using a tired truck, I can't imagine the everyday driver needs more acceleration for than this thing offers. Wish there was an area to test drive it on some winding roads, but first impression is that it drives great for the likes of me.
Paddle shifters are great, especially when you're driving on snow and ice covered roads. They allow you to have some sort of control instead of letting the electronics take over. I have a 2017 Forester XT and use the shifters regularly, especially on snow covered roads. Makes me less likely to have to press the brakes, and have the potential to go into a slide. Also they help add a bit of fun for a more spirited drive.
For people asking why the paddle shifters, it is for holding “gears”. Like in the manual, holding a lower gear to get in and out of traffic gives you much more control.
Well I know what I will be buying 8-10 years from now when my forester xt is driven into the ground.
GamerNxUSN or you could drive it to the ground now
As always, the best reviews in the world!!! Useful information and great footage including cinematography. Thanks Ryan!
Best 2020 Outback review!
I purchased this very model in abyss blue this past weekend and I love it. Absolutely the best vehicle I've ever owned. I loved my 2015 Outback but this 2020 Onyx XT takes it to another level.
That silver Onyx looks sweet, liking this color the best so far 👌🏽
Silver looks great. Saw a white onyx last week, it looks great with the blacked out lights.
Man, what a great vehicle for people to do under the speed limit in the left lane in. Great production and review.
xmode should been physical button.
Would you put STi DCCD in the infotainment? Hell No.
Agreed. Bad mistake there.
Wouldn't buy it for that reason alone and I'm a millennial
And it is on the 2019 Forester. I agree that X-Mode (and climate controls) should be physical buttons/knobs and not buried in the software.
Everything touchscreen, facial recognition, mandatory eyesight... I don’t like where Subaru is heading. I fear the New WRX/STi and a lack of a performance Forester will be the true test of whether Subaru has lost touch. Seems like they are just catering to tech/safety droolers.
I prefer my steering wheel to be in a touch screen
Awesome review! I bought my new-to-me 2020 onyx xt with only 20k miles on it! Got to try it in a little bit of snow and it performed beautifully! I was pleasently surprised opening up the trunk and finding the full size spare! I've been watching a lot of your videos lately and its gotten me so excited to really see what "Sube Zero" can do 👌
I love they just casually went Aston Martin on interior design 😂
Thanks for reviewing this. I had a 2016 Outback and now have a 2019. I'm on the road with it all the time and they are terrific cars. I look forward to upgrading this one in a few years.
Your production quality is amazing.
Oh no, not a tablet :( these need to go away in cars. They are so difficult to use while driving.
It's a huge downgrade.
It's the onlly thing keeping me from buying the car.
Glossy piano black surfaces: fingerprints and scratches. 🤨 Why don’t the designers get the message? 🙄 All reviews have complaints about it. 🤨
Really nice video! Great cometary, audio and cinematography! Thank you
I love my 2012 Outback… this is a pretty sweet upgrade for sure, but I’ll keep driving mine!
yep. I've got a 2011 with only 82,000 miles. but i'll definitely be in the market for a 2031 Onyx.
Ok, wife picked it out and bought a Onyx edition. As a avid outdoors explorer, I can say was just blown awy. My other vehicle is a jeep and can say it has a lot of options. Option are good. The dealership is also very wonderful to work with. They have followed up after the sale, even personally visiting. Oh, watch out if your not used to lane centering, I found that button at night on my way home from the dealer. Damn car told me to put my hands back on the steering wheel lol.
You need paddle shifters on CVT for engine braking on long descents. Very useful in states like Colorado where most Subarus are sold.
A head-to-head overall comparison (including off-road capability) between this and the Honda Passport would be awesome. I think a lot of people are comparing these two cars for purchase (I was recently, went with the Passport), and they share a similar marketing position of being road-worthy, yet capable soft-roaders for those who don't want a full-on, large 4WD SUV or Truck.
Subaru, please replace your glossy infotainment screen with a matte-finish screen. On a sunny day the glossy screen has so much glare, the backup camera visibility is greatly diminished.
All any of these screens need is a slight tilt down to reduce reflections
Unfortunately, no one is paying any attention to this very important detail.
Very well produced review, informative and non-annoying as many can be. My wife drives a 2016 outback limited and she’s not a car person but really loves her Subie. I think that onyx XT will be our next one....
LONG LIVE THE 3.6L BOXER 6 CYLINDER!
This engine is superior in every way, maybe besides longevity which is yet to be determined.
Your video and audio are top-notch.
spectacular footage, great review from my favorite youtube reviewer! thank you!
Good Job! You could really tell how satisfied and impressed you are with the Outback; Like a conqueror. That steep dirt X mode demo is gold.
Best outback video I have ever seen, he provides a lot of info - that's why I remain subscribed :D
This video is a perfect illustration of why ground clearance isn't the only important off-road number. lots of approach and departure issues. Its still a good crossover wagon though.
Patrick Rich do you what changes were made with the latest iteration of the TR690HT CVT? I know you have access to all this info 😃
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Sorry friend, no new info from me. I would have to imagine the 2.4T would require more torque capacity and cooling, though that doesn't necessarily means its enough of either.
That a cute change in direction at that hill with snow/dirt was impressive!
Great review. Still frustrating they fake shift a CVT. Should be able to turn that off. Thanks.
The bulk of drivers disagree with you. I would save a bit more gas if they didn't have that but people complained about the engine noise.
They should just put in a regular automatic. There is no point in adding fake shift points, which reduces the fuel economy...which is the whole reason they went to a CVT in the first place. And regular automatics have greater longevity.
Agree with you, now the technology of CVT is still unreliable. The new corolla is recalling for the new CVT product.
Having a 2015 outback 2.5i, the manual shifting is absolutely critical for ANY kind of passing. I find the car HIGHLY underpowered if you are doing anything more than city driving full time. That being said, the turbo probably doesn't need it, but maybe it's some of the fun factor that the outback has lacked.
@@MaestroTJS CVTs are much lighter than typical automatics
This is a great review. I just bought the Onyx XT about an hour ago. Can't go wrong...thing is SWEEEET.
I have a new Onyx too. Try putting your passenger side roof rail in the aft position and see if you can stow it. On my car, Subaru somehow misplaced the hole in the part that mounts to the roof so the rail won't lock down. Very disappointing quality control failure.
@@roy-whereamI roger that...i'll try that in a little while. Thanks for the heads up.
Jonny & Roy - what are your thoughts on the stereo in the Onyx? Have either of you made any changes/upgrades?
Great demonstration of the X-mode, thanks!
I enjoyed my ‘12 Outback. Except for the out of warranty repair bills. From the time I bought it in 2015 till last week, I spent 10.5k on ongoing repairs and none were cause of abuse or error. The final straw was after spending that 10.5k, was an internal blown head gasket. 5.5 K bill from my local Subaru dealer. 138k miles on the engine. I cut my losses. My research shows me that my experience is the norm. Don’t get one without a warranty.
Great video, great review. Waiting its annauncement for Europe. Greetings from Spain!
The aerial view at the end of the review was breathtaking
Volkswagon just cancelled that Alltrac Subaru gonna kill it. I doubt anyone will cross shop with that wierd Buick wagon. Subaru knows how to keep us Subie people happy.
Good... overpriced, less capable, worse fuel economy, no tow rating in NA, if they we're trying to make an OB killer they missed the mark.
Seems like Subaru really listened to their community on this one. Very nice!
Been waiting for this. Switching from a 14' STI for the ultimate family road trip/adventure wagon! #SubieGang
The Outback has always been a cool car :) . I haven an 06 (07MY) H6, very cool car.
@@thomass8118 I have a 2017 Forester XT and it's faster than the new Outback XT. A lot of fun to drive. You should test one if you have time
Don’t get rid of your sti.... you’ll be sorrrrrryyyyyyy
str8billin ive tried the fxt before but i like the feel of the outback better. I almost bought a 17’ 3.6R couple of years ago. Glad I waited for this edition. I love the new interior.
tjlovesrachel im keeping it
Actually, I find using the paddle shifters great for downshifting in snowy/slippery road conditions.
I use it all the time.
I’ve always liked Subaru’s. We have a 2015 Outback, great little car all around for northern Canada.
But I have to say, I don’t like the idea of fumbling around a touch screen while driving to adjust the heater etc. I don’t like that idea at all.
thanks for the review.
Amen
Really great in depth video! I like the detail you go into as well as the thought and comparison you give the features. Nice job!
Impressively done, great review!
Had a subaru in 90s, till today, subaru is still the best in snowy weather.
Excellent review. The Onyx XT will be the next car I buy.

Why not use your dealerships work email?
@@HOTPLATEGAMING I dont work at a dealership, i work at the factory
Thanks for demo'ing both X modes. Drone work and sound quality are very good as well.
to not have a hard button for X Mode is quite stupid
Didn’t expect that Subie would make it up that slippery turn. Impressed.
Ryan,i must say, your vid is exceptionally well presented, you got to love that sense of humor here,a10 from me,and yes i totally agree the cinematography in this vid is over the topA+++
I,n now sold on a Subaru Outback XT..
the paddle shifters are incredibly useful for long downhill sections
This Outback and the 2019 Forester are a sign that Subaru is stepping up in the offroad category.
And now with the Outback XT, Forester XT owners wont complain!
I asked them to add crawl control to a future update and I think I might have convinced them. 😎
@@drivingsports crawl control in a Subaru. This is gonna be awesome. Now we should convince them to add a crawl ratio to the CVT and we have a complete rig!
I'm still complaining, because I'd much rather have a Forester XT. That said, it looks like this Outback 2020 XT is going to be my next car because I can't wait 3-5 more years for Subaru to finally put out a Forester XT again.
@@outofabook The Forester was always meant for...well the forest. And in the forest you dont need horsepower. You need good AWD and clearance.
I mean you can always get a WRX if you want to be fast, plus you can fit crosstrek suspension. The Forester is a crossover, not a sports car.
Saying that I still understand you but I also understand Subaru. XT sales were only 5%. Anyways I am sure the Outback will satisfy you!
outofabook as much as I wanted more power I couldn’t be happier with my 2019 sport it does so well off-road it’s great on gas comfy as all hell. I thought I’d miss the power... hell who am I kidding I need a turbo still love my Fozzy though 😂💨
I would recommend shifting to manual mode when trying to conduct spirited driving which would possibility provide more take off power.
"Totally tablet-like central display"
Why, oh why?! Why would you want your dash controls be "tablet-like"? What's wrong with being car-like? Also, I want physical buttons to push and knobs to turn!
Because the Volvo V90 Cross Country, the main competitor, and the Audi A6 Allroad, the aspirational upgrade. That screen is what convinces Suburb Suzie that she doesn't need to spend an extra $20K on a lifted wagon with leather.
Paddle-shifters are nice for downshifting during descents. On my current Outback, the transmission does a great job of picking an appropriate gear ratio.
I see your point - but hill descent control does a pretty good job of maintaining low “gears”
@@drivingsports I'm not talking about slow-speed, off-road use, I'm talking about on-road descents at higher speeds (as you'd do in the mountains). Tap the '-' paddle, and the transmission does a good job of picking a ratio appropriate for your current speed. Obviously, you could do the same thing with the shift lever, but I find the paddle shifters handier.
Fantastic production! Very attractive.
If I only knew where in Northern California this video was shot I would go there with my Subaru. Beautiful country. 😎👍
Check out Mendocino coast.
Redwood trees.
2019 legacy ping ponged, so probaly firmware upgrade.
I've learned more about my car just from watching your review. Awesome.
2 things: Needs a real transmission, and no iPad-like controls.
Love the technology, but get a real gear box like the old ones
I use my paddle shifters with my 2013 Outback in the winter under snowy conditions to slow the vehicle down in concert with using the brakes.
This works extremely well in slippery conditions. Just a thought.
When ta hell Outback will move to hybrid engine system??!!
That touch screen set up knocks this new Outback off my list. Not only are touch screens focus attentive, they are hard to keep clean and are highly distracting.
Could go with base model
I have loved my Subies for years now but refuse to buy a car without real buttons! Guess the 2 I own now will be the last if they keep this design going.
Anyone who doesn’t see the benefit of paddle shifters in ALL autos, (even CVT) doesn’t live in hilly areas and hates their brakes.
Drop a couple “gears” for slowing and the auto kicks back in upon acceleration, brilliant!
Nice video!
Thank you from Japan!
Thanks for a great review! Really enjoy my 2018 2.5l - but that Onyx XT looks awesome :)
That screen and the facial recognition are not my favorite things
best review on here of the new outbacks!! thanks for driving it properly and testing everything extra.
what a great car, i just love the outbacks. would love to get a CPO 2020 in a few years, bet itll be great
Thanks for pointing out lack of acoustic glass in the door. As a previous owner of 2011 outback which was a very capable car ....and as refined as a lawn mower...acoustic isolation is for me the most important factor when picking new car. If you have to step up to close to 40k MSRP to get very refined feel and capable AWD...might as well look at palisade or telluride. For the money you get better refinement and one more row of seats. Not too mention you can step up to barely used luxury suv with low miles.
Keep up the good work your channel will grow, in your opinion which would you rather be in this or a Passport for the back roads you drove?
Those particular trails were very tight in places so I would go with the Outback which is almost 1/2 a foot narrower.
@@drivingsports Thanks
Kartboarder22G the Passport is wide and I’ve been scraping on brush. I have a DIY solution for that though. Lucky I have no scratches down to the paint.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I know I've seen what you do. Really suprised you aren't in a JL. Ever tried one?
Kartboarder22G I have not tried a JL, but I thoroughly considered one. I watched all the review videos probably at least 15 of them. The more I watched, the more I knew the JL wasn’t for me.
It was actually the reviews of Driving Sports TV that swayed me into buying the passport. His review of the Passport (which was done after my purchase) further reinforced that I made the right decision.
Thx for a fair & impartial road-test review.
Great review. I live in California, can you tell me where this is? I would love to go driving in that forest.
Fort Bragg
Why don't you walk in a forest like a normal person
CengizhanMilfhuntürk Why don’t you let people enjoy their recreation however they want like a decent person?
Besides going to walk in the forest usually requires driving through a bit of it... that’s why there’s roads to get to the best parts.
I have a 2013 Outback I adore 🥰. I will NEVER buy another model brand of car. I just paid off my 2013. The Ascent first made me contemplate trading in my older Outback. Now this video, featuring the new 2020 Outback DEFINITELY makes me want a new 🚗
Awesome
I'll save you some time: The transmission sucks, its the same over decade old CVT that is waaay behind the modern DCTs and 10-speed automatics available today, and doesn't have any of the iCVT technology like Toyota makes. The infotainment system looks really cool, but don't be fooled, its really a really bad system with a big screen.

Excellent review. I live in New Zealand and have the 2019 3.6 litre and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. My previous car was an Audi RS4 2014 and for everyday life I much prefer the Soobie. The 2020 looks awesome but I think I’ll miss the 6 cylinder. The cvt trans is ok too, the best of its kind and it’s ok for towing smaller boats. These cars are so comfortable and smooth on NZ’s rough back roads that I can’t think of a better all round vehicle. Why buy a euro luxury barge when you can own one of these for half the money. Well done Subaru.
Lost me at CVT. I owned a 2011 2.5 SOHC CVT. If I had to do it all over again I'd go with a 2014 with 3.6R and 5 speed auto
Its fucking sad I have no intrest in subaru anymore because of it
Same here. The CVT is absolutely crap, sold my 2013 because of it. Zero fun in driving, going uphill is a nightmare with that howling sound. Also kills MPG.
@@crossocean5663 your 2.5 made it zero fun to drive it's plenty fun in the 6. And the CVT made a huge improvement in MPG. What rock do you live under, manufactures move to CVT for increased fuel economy......
