  • How do you stop the infamous 30-day syndrome when raising baby discus fish? We use potassium permanganate. In our hatchery we have a 200-gallon system and based on my measurements, we use two grams for the entire system. We're going to show you how we do it in our system but remember one thing - this is for the professionals and your measurements will be different.

For home hobbyists, you can just use hydrogen peroxide. It is an oxidizer like PP but a bit safer and doesn't stain. I dose 5ml/10 gallons. You can kill fish if you dose too much.

    • @TheBSideDJ

Such treatments do not work in established tanks, because it will oxidize and kill all organic stuff and waste between plants, rocks, substrate, bacteria in your filter, dead plant leafs,........ Therefore you can not calculate a ppm solution to dose in an established tank, you can only treat with this method in bare tanks

And if we canister filter and not sump, then directly in the tank?. And how much hydrogen peroxide per 100 gallons of water. Your footage is always reliable and compact with knowledge based information. Thank you sir.

22 grams PP to 1 liter of water.

Make a stock solution. 11g per 500ml. Then use 1cc per 5 gallons of water.

Gabriel, does the PP not kill the anaerobic bacteria in your sump?

it will kill all bacteria. bacteria in a bio-film will not take such a heavy hit unless the treatment is done for the 3 consecutive days as he said. it will definitely knock back the bio-filter but the benefits of the treatment outweigh that.

Agreed with TT. Beneficial bacteria is important, but we should not exaggerate its function, they just eat poops, lower the n&n. If you keep changing water, you will be good.

I always do a 30% water change first and then add the H2O2
