For everyone complaining "it's not Dutch" and "it's not German" and whatever else, listen to what Donal said. The "Dutch Baby Pancake" is an American adaptation (deutsch sounds like Dutch) of a southwestern German puff called a "pfitzauf" made in the oven. In the 17th-18th century, lots of southwestern Germans emigrated to Pennsylvania in America, and became the "Pennsylvania Deutsch" but spelled "Dutch" because time and language. So it's not actually Dutch, as Donal said, it's American-German.
EXACTLY. Its American. Never heard of it anywhere except in the USA and Canada. Dutch pancakes are made on the stove. (deutsch sounds like Dutch). deutsch means German. Going back 2000 years The DUTCH were Germanic tribes that move to present day Netherlands area.
I used I to have these a lot as a kid growing up back in the states. A recipe for 'German Pancakes' had come with my parent's old blender from the 70s or 80s where you just blitz up all the ingredients in the blender and pour into pie plates and bake. They are a treat! Yours look moreish! I just had mine with butter and maple syrup and any fruit that was in season.
My great-grandma, before she passed, used to make these all the time when I was younger. My family would go visit her home in Greece and she was one of the German peoples who went to America. She loved to make it and used to fill it with lots of delicious home grown fruit! Thanks for making this! Really nostalgic for me haha!
Donal Skehan I've made this recipe 5 or 6 separate times. it's delicious! The only problem I'm facing is that it's not fluffy. or when it does fluff up, it deflate within a minute of taking it out of the oven. How do I fix that?
I friggin love Dutch babies!!!!!! I'm used to calling them pop overs. I didn't realize that Yorkshire puddings were the same thing. 🤔 I love that they are hollow because I put filling on the inside of hit and then re-heat them in the over just a bit before eating! Favorite fillings are Cream cheese with a jam and cheese with ham!
These are "Deutsch-American" like Donal said. You will see them around in breakfast places occasionally in the US. The Pancake House has had them on their menu for at least 20+ years. It's funny how pintrest makes things that have been around for decades and hundreds of years seemingly new and unheard of. Love this chocolate take on this! Gorgeous :)
I would continuously fill it with gradually smaller Dutch baby pancakes until I had a kind of Russian doll baby pancake situation, with a verity of different green and blacks chocolate melted between each of the many baby pancakes👍🏻😛😱
Oh my! that looks indelibly delicious Donal, never tried those Dutch pancakes , looks like giant cream puff ? Have to give it a try to find out the taste, can't wait ! Thank you
So in the title it says "how to make a Dutch baby" and I got the notification on my phone and the first thing I saw was "how to make a Dutch baby," and believe me, I was utterly shocked
You take me to a memory lane & makes me remember my summer in Poland. My friend made me Dutch baby pancake for breakfast with fresh berries. Definitely going to make it soon :)
I'm so happy you made these! Honestly, I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to my Dutch Babies. I'll either squeeze a bit of lemon over them or have clotted cream and apple butter on them. I will be trying the filling you used- looks AMAZING!
Donal! If you ever find yourself in Holland, you should go and eat at a 'pannenkoekenhuis', a pancake house.. Those are the true Dutch pancakes and they are amazing! I've never seen a shef make a video about them, It's a shame... Also, Love this recipe!!
Also, they originated in the US. It was derived from the German Pfannkuchen. First restaurant it was produced in was the Manca's Cafe in Seattle in first part of the 19th century.
Here the small ones are called baby dutch and the larger ones are the German pancake. In a local restaurant, they serve them with glazed apple slices, a squeeze of lemon juice and powdered sugar. I fold mine up like a burrito, flip it over, then coat with maple syrup. Delicious!!
@Happy Foods Tube ... consider using a cast iron skillet that had been preheated to 220°C ... then take it to the table (in the cast iron pan) quickly & listen to the "oohs and aahs"
If you ever open a restaurant I would fly all the way to even England to have some food from there. You always make your dishes look fun and spectacular. 😂😂😁
I've visited wiki for some more background and to me it sounds like some American found a recipe for real German or Dutch pancakes, failed by adding too much butter and too much batter. It didn't cook, so this person chucked it in the oven, it turned out well and he/ she named it after the origin of the batter, haha. Looks delisch though, so I'm going to try :). Whether they are French, American, Dutch, German or from anywhere else, I love all pancakes
If I wanted to make gluten-free pancakes like this using f.ex. corn flour, do you think it would be just a matter of adding more baking powder to it to make it rise? Looks so delicious!
You should actually try a Dutch pancake sometimes... Like the dutch restaurants make. It's a somewhat thicker crepe, often baked with different toppings (cheese/bacon/apple/raisins etc. or a combination). Eaten with either with icing sugar/caster sugar/or stroop (syrup). Maybe it's because I grew up eating them, but they're really great Or 'poffertjes', which is a very similar recipe, cooked on a (very hot) cast iron plate with round dimples. Served with butter and icing sugar. There's very few things the Dutch really stand out with in the kitchen, but our starchy sweet treats are the best.
lovely.......can you talk us through your kitchen Donal?....utensils, crockery, layout, staples (must have) ingredients, how often and where you shop, etc?
That looks amazing!! I have a recipe for those on my channel too, and I looove the toasted hazelnuts on top with the dark chocolate, will have to try that soon!!
Hi Donal,I love these! You can put almost anything in them and their still great.Omit the sugar and vanilla and throw in some cheese,Ham and onions and you have a great lunch dish!:) Or a can of drained tropical fruit and you have a terrific "Suprise Pancake" and don't forget the Whipped Cream!;) Thanks.
It's the typical German "Pfannkuchen" batter ,, supposedly a German immigrant in the US baked it in the oven instead of frying them on stove, and the recipe spread in the states under the title German pancakes or Dutch (deutsch) babies .. A mistake Americans make quite often
Can you please consider adding imperial/US units to your recipes on your site?! I really want to make some of your recipes but I don't have a scale to measure "grams" of ingredients.
YEP a real German pancake version...and I understand why the americans adopted this Recipe: it's a big happy pancake😉. I was not familiar with them since I am Dutch😊.
Very much like German pancakes, looks delicious! I already have a dozen ricotta pancakes in the fridge from this morning or I'd be in the kitchen making this! :)
JT McAwesome-Face french toast is completely different (bread dipped into egg/milk mix), and french fries are potato fries right? so that's totally different too ;-)
+AnnK H I just mean french toast/fries are not actually from France, they're American. Didn't know if my so-called German pancakes were actually from Germany or just called German pancakes :p

(deutsch sounds like Dutch). deutsch means German. Going back 2000 years The DUTCH were Germanic tribes that move to present day Netherlands area.
This makes me so happy. I have never heard anyone else call them Dutch babies! I thought it was just my family.
:)

I caramelized Apple will do great🌺
I have definitely heard of and consumed a Dutch baby, but have never heard of pancake day.
If I wanted to make gluten-free pancakes like this using f.ex. corn flour, do you think it would be just a matter of adding more baking powder to it to make it rise? Looks so delicious!
Maybe the addition of a little custard to what you already have there. Such decadence :D
Mango in the centre I think would be nice :), mango and whipped cream maybe? It looks so good!
i love this and will try it soon, thanks!
Can the butter be rested in the fridge overnight, like crepes??

It's the typical German "Pfannkuchen" batter ,, supposedly a German immigrant in the US baked it in the oven instead of frying them on stove, and the recipe spread in the states under the title German pancakes or Dutch (deutsch) babies .. A mistake Americans make quite often
That looks lush...

JT McAwesome-Face french toast is completely different (bread dipped into egg/milk mix), and french fries are potato fries right? so that's totally different too ;-)

As a Dutch person I never heard about Dutch babies
amazing donal
Could you do these in a muffin tin for lots of small pancakes?
I think u can
+Sato Saotome absolutely. This is an American adaptation of the southwest German pfitzauf, which is muffin-sized and puff-like.
