used this cut sheet with a JL Audio TW3 12" and it worked great. I pulled the OE sub and utilized the wiring pigtail from that so I didn't need to order the parts. Thank you!
My only recommendation for anyone doing this themselves is to round over any holes you make in your bracing. Also adding some corner pieces to the inside corners would help the sound quality as well. I will likely be doing this upgrade this winter and think it's a great option for our Golf R's!!!
2017 GTI SE: Followed your instructions on the 30x22 “non bridged” subwoofer and it is perfect! It’s loud enough to shake my rear view mirror, but you can’t hear a thing from outside. Thank You!!!!
Had a quick question as far as using the stock plug out of the fender sub, wheninstalling a single coil subwoofer would you need to only connect 2 of the 4 wires in plug? Or would you just connect all 4 together?
Nice. Might get some rattle between the top of the box and the bottom of the flooring. Maybe a piece of felt on top to stop that. Doubt 1/16” of felt would make the floor sit up. Just a thought.
Aside from sounding better than the factory fender system, how does this change the sound? Does it just make it louder but have the same frequency response? Is it able to better reproduce lower frequencies? Does it sound cleaner? I wanted to know if retaining the factory wiring style like you did would also retain the factory audio quality or even improve it, or if it just makes the bass louder but still degrades the quality because it wasn't tuned for a larger sub. I tried taking the factory wires from the sub and feeding them into an audio processor (LC2i Pro) and then into an Alpine amp and 2 12" Alpine subs, but the audio just doesn't sound as good as the factory system. I'm guessing volkswagen/fender did some different tuning for each voice coil which makes it sound worse when just combining the signal for both coils and feeding it to aftermarket subs.
Could you provide some dimensions of the custom box? I have a MK7 GTI and I am going to use this build to put in an aftermarket sub and want to mimick this box and the placement of the sub. Please let me know if you can provide any guidance!
Cool video, thanks for showing the fender sub in detail. I think its a shame that you HAVE to get the "premium" audio package in some of these cars. And cars that offer a premium audio package should use real car audio companies, fender or beats. I guess the fender system didn't impress?
Why the jumper wire between the voice coils out of curiosity? Doesn’t that drop it to 1ohm? Is it necessary? Looking to do this same thing and just wanted to run this by you first.
At first, I wired it that way (with the jumper wire) because of a wiring diagram I read and was using. Then, I got additional information and read other wiring details that indicated that I didn’t need the jumper wire, so I removed it and just wired each voice coil on the sub straight to the VW connection wires. No jumper needed. Less of a load on the factory amp and still sounds great for what it is. Thanks for the comment. Good luck with yours.
What is the purpose of connecting the two voice coils together? Is the factory sub wired this way? I recently did a similar install but I only wired each voice coil individually and it works great with them both separate, so I'm not sure why you would connect them with jumpers
See my comment down below to someone else who asked the same thing. Initially when doing this, I found a wiring diagram that showed the jumpers. Turns out that they are NOT needed for what I was doing, and the initial wiring diagram info I had was wrong, so I ended up removing them.
Yes, it’s just powered by the stock fender amp, and it sounds pretty good. It’s no audiophile/competition grade sound system by any means, and it’s not intended to be, but it hits pretty hard and sounds much better than the stock fender sub in my opinion, plus it fits perfectly in that spot under the hatch floor and is out of sight, which was the most important part for me.

Great video explaining your build! I likely will follow along! Thanks for sharing!

nice job man and thank you for explaining the wiring and everything!

It fits so tightly that there’s no rattling at all.

Why did you use two terminals for just one speaker? Just wondering because I’m doing this to my VW and just want to make sure I do it right
Because the RF sub has dual voice coils. So 1 terminal and 1 set of wires for each voice coil.
Thanks a lot for video it's incredible job 👍💕

30” x 22” x 4”. Scroll to see the cut sheet at 16:30 in the video. You. Can get 2 full boxes worth out of a full sheet of MDF.
@@chrismiller9776 any kind of measurement for where to cut the sub hole to fit right?
Could you use 2 10" subs in this build?
Would you consider building another and shipping it out for install?
What’s your zip code for shipping?

Good job, nice work 👍
So you are using the stock fender amp to power this new sub? How much power does the stock fender amp put out to the aftermarket sub?

So from the fender sub wires I can take those put them into another amp?
I did not use a separate amp. My wires go straight from the car to the sub. Whatever power the fender OEM amp puts out is what the new sub gets.
would you be able to do a sound test? i'm thinking of doing this
Sound testing doesn’t translate accurately on iPhone video. I tried this already and results were not ideal.
awesome bro exactly what im looking for thanx
How does it perform on the fender amp?
It sounds great and hits pretty hard for what it is. It’s no competition grade audio, but for this purpose it’s more than adequate.
Sell me your old Fender stuff! I have a base R.
I’m going to keep that stuff for putting the car back to stock if/when I sell the car.
