  • Here is the latest update to my hidden 500-watt subwoofer system. I had purchased subwoofer system parts for my Mk7 GTI before I even had the car and was going to tap into the existing speaker wires to feed a signal to the new components. I was building the subwoofer enclosure when VW decided to clear-out its old Helix sound system inventory at a deep discount. I decided to integrate the Helix system into my plan. It works great!

    This is my second subwoofer video. The first video, at ruclips.net/video/Z8bQ6JLd0FE/видео.html, explains why I chose to integrate a subwoofer system with Volkswagen's Helix upgrade instead of building a new system. This video also includes a demo. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

      Mastery takes plenty of time; I'm not there, either. I'd have less editing to do if I was a better speaker. HAHA! Something different that I did on this video, something so subtle that most won't notice: All of my videos have music playing lightly in the background (added during production). Since this video has a music demo, I used the same music in the car and matched the background music so the switch from "video music" to "car music" was nearly seamless. I think it turned out pretty good. :-) Thanks for visiting. -Scott

    Beautiful install bud, meticulous you certainly are, love the use of the trunk for a proper sub, think people forget for SQ bass most audio enthusiasts agree a sealed enclosure works best probably 8 out of ten times and a sealed sub enclosure also requires much less space than a ported box so this sort of setup can achieve beautiful results. I haven't done anything yet but I'm starting with factory premium audio and don't want to rewire doors so I'm half procrastinating half waiting to hear back about a harness for the oem amp to reuse the wire without taping or cutting, the oem amp is optical but also encrypted called a MOST 150 the optical means great flat output with no background noise, the MOST 150 interface was 1500 Australian bucks 😭 really hoping to get this harness at least ordered this week coming so I can begin as it's possible I might have to get it from the UK. I'll likely run power, ground, rca, speaker wire and lastly remote turn on that comes from this crazy expensive optical interface device. Although might be out for some more money for a DSP yet thanks to my jl amps not having a high enough high pass crossover. Lord save my poor banks account. Gotta pay to play, especially when I'm stupid fussy about some things. In the mean time I'll keep watching videos like yours for inspiration. 😊

    Hey, awesome videos. Spent the past hour this morning checking out your set up!
    I have a 2018 Autobahn edition with the fender audio system and a phoenix gold subwoofer pushing 600 watts RMS.
    Absolutely love your stealth setup! I really would have loved to do something similar I'm just not sure the subwoofer I have could be in a box smaller than 1 cu ft.
    Did you install the hitch of your gti yourself? I'm going to look into getting a small trailer to tow with mine soon. I live in VA beach so I don't have an SUV or truck (no need) but the extra space a trailer can provide seems nice.
    If you have any tips or advice I would absolutely love recommendations!

I appreciate having the extra capability of ham radio, but I don't use it frequently. It reminds me of a saying: "I like everything about ham radio... except talking to other hams!" Translating to the stereo is not quite the same. I'm glad to have completed the stereo upgrade and enjoy it all the time. I hope I can leave it alone for a while and just play music. Hi Scott, truly love your videos. Thank you for taking the time to put them together for the world. You inspired me. Question, I am adding a separate sub and amp to my Helix system. I used Speed-taps to get signal from the helix sub(same 4 wires as you did)to supply the signal into my LC2iPro. I left the helix sub connected. Tested everything all seems to be okay except if I turn up the volume up 3/4 of the way the Helix amp will shut off, I am sure its a protection mechanism. I just have to turn of the head units and turn it back on and its fine. Did you experience anything like this? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Год назад

      I didn't experience that because my conversion removed the Helix sub. In your case, you have mismatched lines since you tapped only two of the four channels. The Helix amp is seeing a drop in impedance and pulling back power to protect everything. I don't suspect that tapping the other two channels will help. The amp is expecting a 2-ohm load on that circuit; so, anything you add will only make it lower.
      With that said, I think there's not much value in turning the volume more than halfway, and certainly not to 3/4. Most factory head units deliver the bulk of their power in the lower half and than just add a bit of distortion after that. Perhaps you can index your sub amp to deliver its best output at halfway. It's a risk, though. Good Luck!

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Год назад

      @justinpoore4251 - Another option that I will use if I opt to return my old sub system to the car is to tap the LC2i inputs on the speaker-level inputs BEFORE the Helix amp. That way, I'll be working with unprocessed bass and not changing the load on the Helix subwoofer outputs. I already have a 9" 20-pin ATX power supply extension cable on hand from eBay so I'll be ready to go. I'll hack it instead of the longer factory cable. Just a thought. Feel free to contact me via my website if you want more detail. 👍

    Awesome pro-looking (and apparently pro-sounding) install... congrats!
    Do you know if there is a way to simply install a subwoofer to the non-Autobahn GTI which, comes with the buried-in-the-spare-tire sub, Fender Audio system? Adding a sub to the center of the spare tire compartment -- like the Autobahn model -- would be nice... I don't want a huge sub box in the hatch because I need top carry quite a bit of stuff from time-to-time.
    Also, is that a GTI Sport model? Just curious. You have the tartan seats and the S model is the only model with tartan seats... yet you have navigation and the Autobahn edition is the only model that gives you stock navigation. Plus, you have different wheels than the standard S model GTI. The wheels look nice in my opinion, BTW. I like them better than the stock "Blade" style wheels.
    Sorry for the 50 questions session. I enjoy your channel. I too, LOVE the GTI. All things considered you cannot beat them in the class they are in, including some higher classes of autos.
    Thanks for the vids... keep it up!

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 года назад +1

      The Helix subwoofer upgrade will fit. It's intended to replace the spare tire, but many have had success in mounting it on top or beneath the spare by using a longer spare tire fastening "bolt." There are other options from JBL and Uber Stealth that may work for you, too. Yes, my GTI is a Sport trim. The Sport and its unique (in the US) Nogaro wheels were available only in 2017. I have two videos about the Nogaros on my channel. I had my wheels powdercoated. I prefer a less-flashy look than the finished aluminum. I do not have navigation. Instead, you may have seen Android Auto in one of my other videos. My Sport also has the adaptive lighting system, which is a lot cooler than I expected, and the VAQ differential. I have complete write-ups on my website at StealthGTI.com. I hope to make a series of videos that detail my car. For now, most of it can be found on my playlists. Check them out. It is. The larger display required a larger opening with a thinner bezel. There's a discussion at GolfMk7 with the P/N, if you're trying to piece something together on your own. Otherwise, the kit from EuroZoneTuning will have everything. I have a video, ruclips.net/video/kWs1EYo_d1c/видео.html, that discusses the kit. Take Care, -Scott

    In your opinion is the amp or the subwoofers the weak spot of the Helix system. I'm trying to upgrade and I'm not sure if just am amp will achieve what I want or if I'm better off starting from scratch.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 года назад +1

      Neither is a "weak point." It's a matter of design. The Helix subwoofer portion is only 160W. That's sufficient for an improved sound, but not a dominating bass impact. There's a huge difference between the 160W box with twin 6" subs and my 500W solution with a 10" sub, which moves more air than the two sixxers combined. I was going to build a system that's just the amp and sub, but bought the Helix on a whim due to close-out pricing. Good luck with your pursuit.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Год назад

      My dimensions are a little deceptive because the equipment platform is one side of the box. That means the exterior dimensions of the box is effectively 26x18.75x3.75 inches, making the interior 24.5x17.25x2.25 inches, or 0.55 cubic feet. I have details at wp.me/P7YnQB-1GQ. Oddly enough, I'm on the verge of reorganizing my trunk, starting with the relocation of the subwoofer into a box which resides behind the driver's seat. Thanks for visiting!

      I had installed a 10-inch DVC sub. It's removed now due to an expansion of my communications equipment. IF I didn't have the additional electronics and removed the spare tire (as I have done now for the electronics), I easily could have built a box that would support a downward-firing shallow-mount 12-inch sub. I have seen R owners fit a compact spare tire in their cars. I think they use a setup from the A3? I'm not sure, though. I know there's a how-to thread at GolfMk7.com. With that said, I think that a downward firing subwoofer could work, especially if you make the subwoofer box itself the new false floor. How deep is the space below the removable floor of the Golf R? All you need is about 1.5 inches for woofer movement and then the box builds upward from there. Just a thought. Thanks for visiting!

    If you look at the past viewers shout out for a "sound demo" objectively, you would understand that your viewers aren't necessarily looking to hear "sound quality" that your system provides, through the use of you cameras microphone. A lot of us can see the visual impacts your sound system brings, such as rattling bass from your mirrors for example. When we visually see this, we can better understand if the way you have set up your system,utilizing a single 10" woofer rated at 500rms watts, has,and if its worth it for us to do the same.

I don't NEED it, but it would maximize the capability of my subwoofer and could be fun. If I do that, I will include B-roll of the mirror rattling and/or objects shaking in the car. HAHA! • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 года назад +7

      Dan - Answering that question can be scary because some music is misunderstood. I also don't have a short answer. ;-) I grew up on rock (and 80's pop, of course), then hard rock. Later, I was accidentally introduced to progressive metal (Dream Theater) and other complex music. I was in a very competitive high school band that played complicated music. So, that background planted some unrealized seeds that would make progressive music appealing to me. Over the past several years, I've really come to appreciate the depth of sound produced my symphonic metal, which is rock/metal with symphonic elements such as orchestra and choirs. Bands in this genre include Nightwish, Epica, Delain, and Ayreon. Check out this piece by Nightwish to hear a sample: ruclips.net/video/q9eKLPCciWw/видео.html. Believe it or not, this opening song, "Dark Chest of Wonders," is a Peter Pan story. So, not as "angry" as metal is often labeled. I also like good ol' rock like Unleash the Archers, Tremonti, Sons of Apollo, Kobra and the Lotus, and Revolution Saints. I really like Alter Bridge's recent release, too. It blurs the line between hard rock and metal. I don't prefer screaming, but growling in small doses is okay. Anyway, so much to choose from. Oddly enough, most of my favorite music does not come from the U.S., nor is it popular here. So, I'm often told that have strange tastes in music. HAHA! Thanks for writing! -Scott
