    You did a nice job but I think you should always use a treated 2x4 for your bottom plate to avoid rot. I like tapcons better simply because there is more control. Sometimes ram set blows the concrete apart.

    The best way I have found to clean out Tapcon holes in concrete is to use a compressed air can like Dust Off Electronics Duster. Each can comes with a red narrow tube taped to the side of the can (like WD40 cans) attach this red tube to the duster nozzle and stick it in the hole, a couple quick bursts of the compressed air cleans the hole all the way to the bottom . Also remember to drill Tapcon holes at least a 1/4" deeper so that went the Tapcon is installed concrete dust has some place to accumulate.

    When I’m drilling deep holes with bits of any kind or on any surface, I kinda pump it out. So I drill down a little bit then slowly pull it back out (not all the way) and it helps dump all that dust out

    With Tapcons I have a little computer blower to blow the holes out. It was like 70 bucks but it saves money on canned air and the nozzle is nice and thin to really get in there and clear the hole.

  • @jamesm2464

    I use both. TapCon holds a lot sturdier so our framing crews do Ramset for the walls but TapCons for the knee walls in kitchens. The TapCon is a much sturdier hold on the knee walls where there is little support so both have their place.

    • @jamesm2464
      @jamesm2464 3 года назад +1

      You can walk up and shake both styles...there is no mistaking the TapCon walls held much better so that’s what we do now. I love the ramset because it’s so fast though.

    I just bought a Ramset, and the instructions say to set the nail at least 3" from the end of the board ( or any free end for that matter). This prevents splitting the board or blowing out concrete. In the video, the nail looks more like 2" from the end.

  • @larryhutchinson4271
    @larryhutchinson4271 3 месяца назад

    After you loaded the "blank" in the hammer gun, you should treat it like a weapon and never point the nail towards you or someone else. You had your hand over the end while you were locking the "barrel" in place, all it takes is a strike on the "blank" and it will shoot that nail out.

    • @bobjames2312

      the built in safety is identical to a nail gun. you have to depress the tip on the surface to marry the charge to the pin. without the tip depressed, the plunger will not strike the rim to ignite the charge and drive the nail

    I have one of three 4 x 4 posts on the front porch that is rotted at the base. The other two original posts appear to be secured to the concrete slab with nails-looks to be nailed in diagonally (house build in 1952.) I would like to put in a new post but use tapcons inserted diagonally through the post and. into the concrete. Is this possible? Any advice appreciated-Thanks!

    • @WadeofAllTrades
      @WadeofAllTrades  3 года назад

      No you would not need the gasket. You just need some barrier so that the wood is contacting the concrete directly. The tiles would act as your barrier. Cheers!

    Happy homeowner her, diy er of projects I should be....I was always under the impression that the whole point of tap con's was that you just screwed em right into the concrete. As expensive as they are if I'm drilling holes then why would I use something that costs 10 times as much as the anchor and screw set

  • @Frenchwine15

    I can't believe that you don't have a DPM (Damp proof membrane) under your concrete slab and rely on a strip of DPC (Damp proof Course) above the slab. What stops damp from rising up your plaster board if it fits direct on the slab without a DPM?

    • @WadeofAllTrades
      @WadeofAllTrades  3 года назад +4

      This our code here. Slabs after 2010 do have a membrane under the slab but it doesn’t negate having some sort of gasket between the wood and concrete. Drywall never contacts the concrete in a basement with floating walls otherwise it will crack.

    Great video tap cons waste of time and effort that’s been my experience also stripped no grab no bite The video was great as the quarter inch head tap con was going into the concrete you could see how the impact driver stripped it and then your hand actually wiggled the 2 x 4 back and forth ,Hilti or Ramset all the time I also like the way the tap con broke they’re worthless fasteners

      I think you're supposed to put the TapCons in using a hand wrench or your driver on low torque. Need to stop turning as soon as they are in or you will strip them. Don't give extra pulls on the trigger like in the video.

      Just asked Wade this question, but sounds as though you are familiar with the Ramset as well, so I'll also ask you.
      I've never used one before but I have access to one.
      I'm getting ready to close in a back porch that sits on a very sound concrete slab.
      The pressure treated 2 x 4's I will be using as a bottom plate will edge to the concrete edge, meaning I would be driving nails about
      2 1/4 inches from the edge of the concrete slab. The last thing I want is to blow out a chunk of concrete.
      Appreciate your input and thanks.

    How close have you used the Ramset to the edge of a concrete slab?
    I'm getting ready to close in a back porch for a Sunroom and I'm considering trying a Ramset with Yellow loads to connect my pressure treated plate to the concrete. Naturally, the 2x4 will have me using the Ramset about 2 1/4 inches from the edge of the concrete, and the last thing I want is to blow out a chunk of the concrete slab.
    I'd appreciate your thoughts and Thanks in advance.

    • @WadeofAllTrades
      @WadeofAllTrades  3 года назад +1

      I wouldn’t use a Ramset so close to the edge. I think you are right it it could crack the concrete. Probably the better choice would be Tapcon and just take your time drilling the pilot holes and Driving the tapcon. Could even use a drill instead of an impact to drive the Tapcon. I have used Tapcon close to the edge and also on patio blocks without issue.

      Just drill and use tapcon if you really want to succeed everytime. Ramset is much quicker but it depends on what you are doing and how fast you want to complete. Definitely more consistent with tapcon. But quick and dirty for hanging some shit on walls that dont carry weight?.sure!..( i use expansion shields for hanging heavy stuff on concrete walls)..im not a framer but I can see the need for speed while framing on a foundation floor..I do appreciate all aspects of construction and enjoy all these videos. 1/4" diam., 2" 3/4 long tapcon to anchor 2x4 stud to concrete. Also, never had any issue with dust buildup. I suspect this guy is force-drilling down like there is no tomorrow excessively long screws. You need to stop pushing every once in a while and pull up while spinning to expel debris. Same as you'd do with a drill press.
