      Should you wait to put in the sub floor till after the drywall is hung? Or can you do it after the framing?

    • @ahmadal-rubayee6085
      @ahmadal-rubayee6085 5 лет назад +3

      do it before the framing this way you will install the subfloor faster and you can anchor your walls on the subfloor instead of the concrete.@@seanmcguire7974

    Jeff - this video has a ton of really useful information. Thank you! I'm about to build soffits for a kitchen remodel and will definitely use your system for creating the box instead of the "ladder" approach that I was going to do.
    Also, it's really impressive how quickly you can do the math in your head adding the fractions for multiple pieces of a joint where pieces meet. But... when I listen to you, I'm always trying to imagine what parts the measurements represent and by the time I can form a mental picture you are two sentences beyond me. This would be a great place for Max to insert graphics showing the dimensions of the pieces you are attaching to each other. W + X + Y + Z equals 5 3/8 and I can see what you're saying as you're saying it!
    Thanks for all the great work you do - Cheers!

      @@HomeRenoVisionDIY I'll send pictures of the soffit using your approach if you like. And, I'm a graphic designer so if you ever need help with W + X + Y + Z equals 5 3/8...let me know!

    I randomly watched this video and was hooked 30 seconds in - lots of great information shared at a quick cadence and a good sense of humor. I really appreciate the pride Jeff puts into a well constructed project for the long run - not just throwing up some dimensional lumber, very good understanding of the characteristics of the material he's using and thinking ahead for all the trades that depend on a thoughtful framer to set them up for success.

    I'm about to attempt building a music studio in my basement and have no idea what I'm doing. I just watched hours of how-to youtube videos on finishing your basement. One of the better videos for renos I have seen. Lots of small little nuggets in this. I dont ussually build, working as a fire fighter am ussually tearing stuff out, mostly in newer construction. If everybody built like this, it would be alot more work for me!! Some of the sad, shortcut framming I see is unreal. Nothing like trying to do some overhaul (post fire removal of walls and materials to remove and prevent regrowth of a fire before we leave) and pretty much pulling entire wall down when trying to simply pull a few studs!!!. Quality builds matter.
    Great insight!!! I am bookmarking this (and many of your other vids) for a comming DIY basement reno for my home theater.
    Keep the content coming!!! One of the most valuable channels out there as a DIYer to get some insight.
    I grew up in Ottawa, now live in the US. Its funny to hear all the small references to my old home town!!!. Oh.. and metric vs imperial.... head against wall... can we as a world just pick one lol.

    • @chrisj9008
      @chrisj9008 5 лет назад

      @@HomeRenoVisionDIY you know I dont know of thats actually true. I find the nails sheer with any lateral force and break where the nails seems to bend more. I dont ussually break a nail, I dont ussually pull out a screw if that makes sense.

    Built my first wall and tried to make the height too perfect. I used a hammer to wack it in place, but it was too tight and would not stand plumb. Was unable to then lower the wall and had to cut all the studs off. My second wall was better! Thanks for your tips. Super helpful for me finishing my basement alone.

    7:15 for the next minute or so for DIY’rs be careful.
    An 1/8” to a 1/4” forced in won’t ruin carpets or tile but could cause the subfloor to heave just enough that it doesn’t resettle which causes a squeaky floor upstairs

    Awesome video -- I picked up so much! Finishing my basement alone and this will help immensely! Couple questions on your awesome bulkhead solution:
    1) Would you still use this method it if you were hiring out the drywall? In other words, will a crew coming in have any issues using those screwed 2x2's rather than a 2x4 "ladder"? Would you do anything differently to square them before a crew came in?
    2) Would this system also work over larger spans for lowering a ceiling in a big room that contains a bunch of mechanicals interspresed throughout? Rather than doing multiple bulkheads, I was thinking I could use your system to essentially create new "joists" that are 1' lower and run perpendicular to the originals. Does that make sense?

    Do you have any videos of finishing older basements? It seems much easier to do this work in a newer construction (and this is certainly helpful), but if you have anything like this working in an old fieldstone type foundation, with older floor joists (where the dimensions vary and where the ends are notched off to meet the perimeter box on top of the foundation) etc., I'd love to see it! Thanks!

    Jeff you should explain where not to hold your hand on the lumber while nailing. I was running a pin nailer yesterday in trim for the face of cabinet doors. The pin hit something in the plywood and it curled around and blew a hole in my finger. I was not thinking. I did not give the pin nailer enough respect and space for the what if. Man my finger is sore this morning.

      jack support is only needed when you are transferring load onto a header. in this case it is a non load bearing wall so the hear is simply there to accept the trim nails and keep things from cracking. the header was added later. Cheers!

    Hey Jeff! Thanks for the great video. Tackling out basement framing over the next couple days - I have a question about existing framing. Our house is 1965 in Edmonton and we completely gutted the basement to add a secondary suite. The walls around the foundation already have framing and we’ve left those intact as they are in decent shape. However, the bottom pieces aren’t pressure treated. There doesn’t seems to be any rot or anything yet (and they are original), but I’m wondering if we should replace that framing or at least the bottom piece? Moving forward all our new walls will have pressure treated on the bottom. Thanks for the tips and great videos!

    So your way of doing soffit boxes is genius however i do have a query for you. Side note I have been doing rough framing for around 6 years now so i have some experience in the field. So as you well know most framers do not do the drywall themselves what would you suggest to support the bottom outside edge to keep it square if you will not be doing the drywall yourself. Also continue the great work I am used to picking people apart for people doing things shoddy and you have a real quality to your work thanks again and keep up the good work.

    Love your videos. Very educational. Question for you. I have my basement covered with a blanket of pink insulation and vapour barrier all around. When i do the perimeter framing - does it need to be opened up and cut into the framing wood? Or can i put the frame against the pink insulation and vapour barrier (keeping the insulation untouched and puffy) seems easier than fiddling around the blanket of insulation already in place. What do you think?

Question: do we still need need to include 2x4 support straps underneath or can we screw the dry wall without that added support underneath? Basically, can we hang the dry wall directly on the 2x2 without strapping the bottom?

    Excellent as always! You mentioned you'd be putting waterproof vinyl on the concrete. Does that mean you'll be adding a product like DMX onestep as a subfloor? I contacted that manufacturer recently and they did only allow laminate 10mm or thicker to be applied directly. Otherwise, you'll have to put OSB down on the DMX securing with your ramset / concrete anchors.

    I love these videos but I have a question for you and the viewers... I have to restart my shop and I'm trying to stick with one line of tools to save on batteries and chargers so which do you prefer Milwaukee or Dewault? I do mostly carpentry and mechanical work... Thanks.

      For a trade pro doing mechanical I would say Milwaukee if you can afford it! Cheers!

    When framing studs up against basement wall. Is it recommended to space the 3 inch studs 2 inches away from the wall to create enough space for the 5 inch thick insulation?

    Jeff, how do you feel about steel (aluminum?) framing for walls in basements?

    Need to use 2x3 lumber. 2x3 don't come in pressure treated. I have a click on tile floor over concrete. Can I place the base plate over the vapor barrier?Do I need pressure treated on this floor?

    Jeff, thank you for the video. Very helpful. I am wondering how you go about adding drywall to the stud wall you created below the steel beam around the 25 minute mark in the video. Do you add any pieces of wood to the beam that the drywall can be nailed to? I'm attempting to hide the beam inside a 2x4 wall without having to build a soffit. Just not sure how the drywall will be supported around the beam area. Thanks again.

    Any tips on framing floating walls and how to install a door in a floating wall. Floating walls are required by code in my area due to heaving/expansive soils

    How do you lay down crowns on the studs? Inside or outside? When measuring stud locations on the plates, do you measure first stud 15 1/4 ( -3/4") and then every 16 ", or do you take 3/4 off every 16" measurement? ( 15 1/4, 31 1/4, 47 1/4 and so on. This old house and others have different techniques. You didn't mention your idea of measuring locations. Please advise.

    Jeff--in regards to the wall frame you hammered into place in the 8-minute mark, why didn't use double top plate? thanks

      it is not structural so there is no need to tie it together with another wall plate.

    When your marking 16 on center,, wouldn't you mark 3/4" on each side of the mark or am I missing something ?

      Exactly

      I could be wrong but he may not be worried about it starting 16" on center from the wall.

      When you're marking "16 on center" that means that the center of one stud is 16" from the center of the next stud. But the right side is also 16" from the right side of the next, and the left side is also 16" from the next left side. Marking just 1 side of the stud on the sill plate is much faster than adding 3/4, then just subtracting it.

      You could, but thats if youre marking the actual center, and starting your tape in the center of the first stud. A really easy practice to remember is just hooking your tape on the edge of the first stud and marking all your 16"s that way everything is 16" on center as its all 3/4" short, and you dont need to worry about holding your tape in the perfect position

    Shouldn't interior wall be done as floating walls?

    Thanks, Jeff. I'm really learning a lot of stuff from you and getting ready for my basement reno. Quick question about the hardware you use. What screws should I use for interior job like this? Can I use regular #8 phillips head wood screw (3" or 3.5")

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  5 лет назад

      You could, I live in Canada so we have a square bit and screw which is much easier to work with. I would prefer to use a nailer over phillips screws but you should be fine as long as you push while you screw. Cheers!
