I don't know what most of these sounded like in the original games, but honestly I like the way this sounds! And as always, your Arnold impression is spot on lol
LGR reviewed the X2GS wavetable daughterboard (also from Serdaco), which is a good way to hear what Doom and Duke 3D sound like on a Roland GS instrument set. Check it out over at ruclips.net/video/J72ZNkU314E/видео.html if you like!
I agree that Blooddrunk sounds good with the McFly… some of the others have my brain yelling, “McFly!” (You know, just like in Back to the Future. Even in the correct voice. “Think, McFly, think!”)
By coincidence, Austrian Death Machine is coming to my area 24th of May, and this definitely sounds like that singer’s voice! :D The McFly also sounds pretty good, it it’s own quirky way. The whistle however in the Descent Level 2 test was pretty horrible! :P Keep the awesome videos coming! :D
@@Inject0r Such a fun band. Its good to see them touring again! I would agree on the whistle as well, but I have to admit it cracked me up hearing it for the first time.
I agree, I find it quite charming as well. I think many people on the vintage computer scene just get accustomed to the sound of proper FM synthesis or MT32 and find anything that deviates from that offensive. For me the variations between sound hardware is extremely interesting, even if it sounds a bit "off" what we are all used to.
I have to point out that it feels like you were a bit biased towards this product... Let's face it: by playing Children Of Bodom on Midi there at the end, you were clearly trying to show this Wavetable board in a suspiciously good light! . . . . Seriously though XD : amazing video!!!
Haha it is probably the best example of its potential from these samples. It is almost always hit or miss it seems, but its a fun little thing to screw around with.
Has a bit of the gritty, loose sound of Fm synthesis with some of those patches. I think it would be better for new compositions choosing the best patches, hearing familiar songs is a bit jarring. Good to know, thanks for this.
I love my McFly for its unique and wired lo-fi sound! And yes, sometimes its odd like that whistle-sound in the Descent track or the eerie music in AOE thats barely recognizable to how it should sound. But overall I just like it:) Btw. I hope the DN3D intro doesn't give you a copyright claim because YOU deserve the monetarization. The call from the 80s was very entertaining😂
@DOSStorm Don't know if it was the intro or another DN3D track but I got a complain once.. (It didn't bother me as my small channel doesn't fulfill the requirements so far😄)
Sounds to me like the distorted guitar might be mixing the guitar string sounds then applying a distortion to the result, like a real guitar, as opposed to the normal practice for GM of recording a single distorted string and mixing multiple channels of that cleanly. You can clearly hear some intermodulation in the Duke3D snippet. It sounds real bad though, and I can't tell if this distortion is intentional and they just didn't nail the result (maybe because the composers weren't expecting the effect) or if it's because the mixing chain is separately overdriven later (which would be real sloppy and bad). Mostly in Duke3D I suspect the mix is just wrong and it would probably sound way way better if the guitar was pulled back a bunch.
I feel like some of the samples have some nasty reverb that doesn't always sit well in the mix. The tracks with less guitars sounded better in Duke3D and perhaps I should have included those in these samples. However, I wanted to clearly show its weaknesses and strengths, and Grabbag is probably the worst sounding track here I would say.
Shades of Clint's Christmas Twin in this one if my Total Recall is correct. You could be Twins! I'm glad you've decided to Jingle All The Way into these skits instead of Terminating the channel. I'm also glad you didn't give in to the ebay Predators charging extortionate amounts for Expendable equipment with True Lies about how functional it is. I'm glad you got it Running Man, even if the sound isn't great. Does it work with Norton Commando?
NYAHHHHHH! pun overload! **Californian governor grunt sounds** In all seriousness...I would be amiss to deny that I enjoy both LGR and Austrian Death Machine and there maybe unintentional subconscious influences.
"No wavetable on this thing", erm the Gravis Ultrasound were pure wavetable sound cards! I think you meant no wavetable connection as it would not need one!
I'm pretty sure its an actual WaveTable as it lists the instruments in the datasheet. Also...Canyon or passport would probably be a good benchmark for me to add to these tests.
@@DOSStorm a little suspicious of how they added the instruments from the first revision though, sounds more like programmed synthesis. How do the sounds compare to Jamie O'Connell Fmsynth drivers?
oh man, that sounds ... terrible ! haha ... still, 35 years ago I would have killed to have this on my soundcard which only had basic FM synth, not even OPL3. Pretty cool but the Dreamblaster S2 is tonds better and only for $5 more. Cheap would be $15-20 ! not 35
Well, it is the cheapest Serdaco WaveTable. It is definitely a fun little board, but yeah the S2 is much better option if you want something less experimental and more functional. $20-25 might be a better price point considering the S2 is only a few dollars more, but I'm not sure what the profit margins and production costs are on any of this stuff.
Came for the "old" tech, subbed for the Arnold impersonation. 😁
Thanks for the screen flicker warning, but I don't think anything could have prepared me for Hungarian Sonic & Knuckles
I don't know what most of these sounded like in the original games, but honestly I like the way this sounds! And as always, your Arnold impression is spot on lol
lol DOOM wasn't meant to sound like "Guitar Rock Band"™, I mean go listen to any original midi dump :p

I really dig "Weird Al" accordion mix of Grabbag!
Thanks for showing off McFly - nice video !
Thanks for making these cool products. ;)
It's very crunchy, I dig it.
I dig it! Its fun to hear familiar games in a new way.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way!

Makes you wonder which other chips contain secret MIDI functions... ;) Good vid!
Surprisingly, Blooddrunk didn't sound half-bad! You're right it has its moments, but sometimes it does weird stuff.
Yeah its strange that it butchers Duke3D and DOOM so much but Blooddrunk actually sounds good.
@@DOSStorm with Duke3D it almost sounded like the codec itself was failing to mix all the voices. And the guitar was, for some reason, quite terrible.
No idea how I ended up here 😂
It certainly has it's flavour, I kinda like it's sound.
Wow the Duke 3d music! 😄
Clean for some songs, rather crunchy for others. All-in-all, I'd call it quite serviceable especially for the price point.
"Recreations and abominations" - lord I feel this.
0:20..
Dude, in some parts of the phone conversation your other character sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger from the 80s/90s. xD
You think so? Does kinda sound like Arnie doesn't it? 😜
That's cause it was Arnold from the 80s :P
He really wants his midi

@@DOSStormI caught myself chuckling as well :’)
I had a jank wavetable back in the day on my SB16, and I don't think it was a whole lot better than this. For that reason I dig it
Lucky! I never got to mess with this stuff until much later.
I love this little thing! I have one in every color!

Part janky, part funny, for sure cheap. Interesting but not what I would want for a wavetable "upgrade". Great video as always.

it would be nice to hear some tunes from transport tycoon deluxe, which afair had one of best tunes on old PC
That is a fantastic game and a good suggestion. Maybe I'll include it in some future videos.

At this point i feel it's better to emulate DOS with a SF2, sadly the prices arent good enough in my view
Fuck yeah! Sky Roads!!
One of my favorite shareware games growing up!
Very nice sound, so unique
Yeah its weirdness is a huge selling point for me.

how it is so bad but i also want it immensely
The ridiculous whistle sound in Descent gets me everytime. By all means it is bad...but also kinda good.
I meant to sub last time, but after the Kung Pow clip I was there!
Haha, It always makes me happy to see other people who like that movie.
"No wavetable on this thing", erm the Gravis Ultrasound were pure wavetable sound cards! I think you meant no wavetable connection as it would not need one!
Indeed. Wave table header is what I meant. 😁

well, it's got 'character'... I very much liked hearing it in this vid, but it'd really bug me if I was spending my gaming time listening to it.
Is it actually a wavetable, or is it really a FM synth?
