Been following Max over the years - he has really found his own groove. Love the energy and skill.
Only this time I saw a drummer strengthen so many bands, MP awesome.
Like father, like son. Max is a helluva drummer, and a nice, humble young man. 👍

pretty sure he's ex avenged sevenfold, and liquid tension experiment drummer too! love how it emphasizes "ex-dream theater" out of all the bands he's played in thats what he's most known for (SMH)
Well. I give you LTE, but with avenged sevenfold, he was just helping out for the album (which he did very very good ...) and the tour. he was never meant to be "in" the band.
I like both drummers... Wish you well!!!
You can actually hear Max and his sister Melody playing as young kids in the beginning of Dream Theater's Goodnight kiss.
What an interesting lesson brought down through generations.

Mike claims that the bar for musicians is rising constantly. I would argue that as far as this genre of music goes, the bar is constantly falling.
What's disappointing about this and Mike should know better, is that blast beats and double bass is not difficult. It's just speed and fatigue training. What makes Mike and similar drummers great, is their ability to control the beat, understanding phrasing and music theory/timing. At this rate, Maximus will turn out to be another Mangini instead of another Porntey. Fine, if that' what he wants, though let's be realistic, unless he learns his dad's progressive type style or toolset, he will never be better than him.

Who are you, and why would you say such a thing? As if you can hold a candle to Mike Portnoy’s understanding of his son’s talent. Sure, he’s biased in his son’s favor, but you’re comparison of Max’s development being more towards Mangini than Portnoy is at best, lazy.

How about Max’s playing is a reflection of many drummers other than just his dad? As are all other drummers!
Eventually, every drummer becomes his/her own drummer, with their own style.
It isn’t about who’s best. That’s a concept that real musicians consider arbitrary and meaningless.
