      It's a strange thing but it works. I'm a piano teacher and taught the son of a friend of mine who won Best Jazz Pianist Of The Year in the UK several years ago. No way did he want to teach his son formally. In most cases it's much better for an outstanding musician's son to be taught by someone else because of the father-son dynamic primarily but also because it's healthier, opening up more possibilities for the young one aside from the ones already absorbed from watching or copying your father.

    Father and son jamming side by side. How cool is that. I remember sneaking into my first jam night with my old man. It was at a bar/ pool hall. The staff new I was underage. We didn't sit the bar. We sipped cokes till it was time to play. I got up, rocked out on drums for a few tunes and then we went back home. I'm 40 now. We buried my pops 10 years ago. Looking back, that was my fondest memory of my dad.

      My late dad was a jazz drummer. When I was a kid he took me to gigs. He got a free roadie since I helped pack and put up everything. I even made his cymbal covers and special drumstick bag.

    It's a blessing what happened to you Mike ... !! Congratulations...!!! Not because your child also plays the drums or any other musical instrument, it is by the transmission from father to son. My 2 sons are musicians, (the oldest, 30 years old, is a singer, composer and guitarist and the youngest, 28 years old, pianist, composer and arranger) I was proud to have played with them in one of his Projects, this has been directly embodied in my soul, forever. Greetings from Argentina.

    Guys, all those who are criticizing the kid for having no dynamics, etc, isn't fair at all..
    You're always a product of your environment, and those who grow up around famous parent musicians, don't always fall "close to the tree" so to speak.. Some stray off and do their own thing..Others fall extremely far from the tree.. Max Weinberg's son Jay is a perfect example of that..Jay is a blast beating cave man, which is great and perfect for what he does, while his dad's a more versatile drummer with better technique and finesse.. Then you have Jason Bonham who's a chip off the old block and then some, but still developed a different playing style all his own..There is no doubt that his drumming"DNA" screams Bonzo, but that's perfectly normal..
    Max is still learning as a fledgling drummer, and he has plenty of time to develop his technique, or which musical direction he'd like to take..
    Most of us were at his point at one time in our drumming lives, and then matured..
    Let the kid have his fun bashing away as we ALL did, then give him time to grow up and further expand his percussive horizons.. I just think it's great that a father and son can share in something they both have an interest in, and this can help in developing a close relationship with each other, the way every parent-child relationship should be.
    Most have their faces buried in their smartphones or video games, while dad is busy at work, or preoccupied with other things.. Unfortunately not all have the time to share in something like this with their child, but if the opportunity arises, the it should be taken advantage of..

    • @crimsun7186
      @crimsun7186 7 лет назад +3

      That's a good point...Until you realize that wrong technique is actually harmful to your body and will shorten your career as a drummer. A good example of those are Torry Castellano (she had to surgically operate because of tendonitis, then developed shoulder problems that forced her to retire from drumming altogether), Phil Collins (bad posture damaged his spinal cord nerves and affected his grip to the point that he can't even hold a pair of drumsticks anymore), Neil Peart (had to relearn how to play due to hand problems and now is suffering from back problems due to bad playing posture), and so on. I am of the opinion that accident prevention is much more effective than damage control.

    • @Radio-Loud
      @Radio-Loud 7 лет назад +2

      CrimSun I don't disagree. I may have missed it but I am curious why anyone would be convinced that he will not work to perfect his technique as he grows and matures. It's possible that right now they realize that he's young and if he wants to truly be successful as a drummer it's more important at this point in his life for him to play as much different music as often as possible. I can't speak for them but as a drummer with a similarly aged son who is musically inclined this is exactly what I would wish for him to have. Sorry if this reads weird, I type how I talk.

    I'll be honest, when I first heard of Max Portnoy I felt like the guy will be forced to stay in his father's shadow. And on the contrary, the thoughts that being the son of the legend, he will get undeserved recognition. Or whatever, he will be the "next Mike Portnoy".
    But boi, this dude the drummer and song writer of Tallah. He isn't no "next Mike Portnoy". He is Max fucking Portnoy, the guy has blown my mind and proved himself. Which isn't easy when you have such large shoes to fill up. I am glad he chose his own path, and showed us all what this guy is made up of.

    His eyes are so warm and careful when he listens to his son's talking. That made me so happy. A greatest drum player in this planet and a greatest father as well. Moreover, I praise his tremendous talent that he admits his own limitation as a teacher, not a player.
