Could you imagine being the teacher of Mike Portnoy's kid... Poor guy
I know right! My guitar teacher one taught Malcolm young's son!
Brian Lauf 😂
"poor guy"? I'd tell Mike to kiss my nads if he didn't like my teachings.
It's a strange thing but it works. I'm a piano teacher and taught the son of a friend of mine who won Best Jazz Pianist Of The Year in the UK several years ago. No way did he want to teach his son formally. In most cases it's much better for an outstanding musician's son to be taught by someone else because of the father-son dynamic primarily but also because it's healthier, opening up more possibilities for the young one aside from the ones already absorbed from watching or copying your father.
@kalle kanin it was a joke omg... Your life must be so sad.
That t-shirt gives him the power of the Yee. He's in a good path.
Father and son jamming side by side. How cool is that. I remember sneaking into my first jam night with my old man. It was at a bar/ pool hall. The staff new I was underage. We didn't sit the bar. We sipped cokes till it was time to play. I got up, rocked out on drums for a few tunes and then we went back home. I'm 40 now. We buried my pops 10 years ago. Looking back, that was my fondest memory of my dad.
Dang man rip, sounds like a great experience
This comment made me smile. That’s so cool.
👏👏👏
Way back in the day my grandpa was a chicken picker in a country band. They lost their base player so my Uncle was filling the spot. I think he was about 15.My grandpa bought him a fake mustache so they could play At the local honky tonks 😂 My grandpa was a nut 😂
My late dad was a jazz drummer. When I was a kid he took me to gigs. He got a free roadie since I helped pack and put up everything. I even made his cymbal covers and special drumstick bag.
love this video
66Samus omg!! great to see you here!
66Samus mike porntoy bro
Haill king Samuss...
Huuur yuuuuuh
You play Zildjian not Sabian
This is awesome to see! Wow! As a father, this even makes me proud. I can't imagine how Mike must feel to see his son carrying the torch. Thanks for doing this feature Sabian!
haha at 7:01 I feel so happy for Mike. He genuinely looks like he's having a blast jamming with his son.
Everybody hating on Max, like; "Why isn't he the best? He should be, so why isn't he the best drummer? Why doesn't he know all styles of drumming and is not equipped with all drumming techniques?"
ffs shut up, the dudes only 16. Let him develop and choose his own music direction. HE IS NOT MIKE PORTNOY. Your opinion on him is as important as my yesterday's fart
Nathan Lawrence but he has been playing for 11 years? He should be good
Nathan Lawrence but my fart sounds bigger than yours
This kid is almost better than his dad
Hey man, let him have his fun. It's just marketing. Stay cool.
"Playing for 11 years, must be good" ..... wat
Still see the DT logo on the drums
Ramon De Bakker that's one of the kits that he used while he was in DT
I wish my dad was like Mike, he seems like a really good parent, he is proud of his kids, and i think it is so sweet ❤️
amazing the face of mike seeing his son playing
I like that Mike's self-aware to know the difference between an expert and a teacher. Refreshing to see.
It's a blessing what happened to you Mike ... !! Congratulations...!!! Not because your child also plays the drums or any other musical instrument, it is by the transmission from father to son. My 2 sons are musicians, (the oldest, 30 years old, is a singer, composer and guitarist and the youngest, 28 years old, pianist, composer and arranger) I was proud to have played with them in one of his Projects, this has been directly embodied in my soul, forever. Greetings from Argentina.

This is so awesome! A father's love and pride in his son who is doing well in his own right, is a true blessing!
This was PHENOMENAL to watch!!!
So no one is going to say anything about Max's shirt? Lol

Mike Portnoy Old vs Mike Portnoy Jr.
Seeing both of them in London.. Can't wait!!
I saw Mike in Germany four days ago myself!!
I can only hope to be this much of an influence on my kids!
Teacher: do you know how to play in 6/8?
Max: no but I can play a 3/4 polyrhythm with ghost notes and accented flams and drags.
Teacher: how much do you charge for lessons?
# UKIP lmao
😂😂😂
It makes me sad that this man will pass in my life time.. most inspirational drummer I’ve ever heard
i think about it too often, i just hope i get to see dream theater on tour with the whole original lineup once again.
Been waiting for this video for a loooooong time, I remember Mike mentioning it months back
Guys, all those who are criticizing the kid for having no dynamics, etc, isn't fair at all..
You're always a product of your environment, and those who grow up around famous parent musicians, don't always fall "close to the tree" so to speak.. Some stray off and do their own thing..Others fall extremely far from the tree.. Max Weinberg's son Jay is a perfect example of that..Jay is a blast beating cave man, which is great and perfect for what he does, while his dad's a more versatile drummer with better technique and finesse.. Then you have Jason Bonham who's a chip off the old block and then some, but still developed a different playing style all his own..There is no doubt that his drumming"DNA" screams Bonzo, but that's perfectly normal..
Max is still learning as a fledgling drummer, and he has plenty of time to develop his technique, or which musical direction he'd like to take..
Most of us were at his point at one time in our drumming lives, and then matured..
Let the kid have his fun bashing away as we ALL did, then give him time to grow up and further expand his percussive horizons.. I just think it's great that a father and son can share in something they both have an interest in, and this can help in developing a close relationship with each other, the way every parent-child relationship should be.
Most have their faces buried in their smartphones or video games, while dad is busy at work, or preoccupied with other things.. Unfortunately not all have the time to share in something like this with their child, but if the opportunity arises, the it should be taken advantage of..
Good point made and great attitude that these hater should aspire too.
Rhythmista yeah man. I read negative comments and pretty often think I'm hearing envy. That's pretty selfish and anti-community. Appreciate your injection of positive energy. I guess I'm a hippie.
Hell yea man. Only comment I need to read on here.
That's a good point...Until you realize that wrong technique is actually harmful to your body and will shorten your career as a drummer. A good example of those are Torry Castellano (she had to surgically operate because of tendonitis, then developed shoulder problems that forced her to retire from drumming altogether), Phil Collins (bad posture damaged his spinal cord nerves and affected his grip to the point that he can't even hold a pair of drumsticks anymore), Neil Peart (had to relearn how to play due to hand problems and now is suffering from back problems due to bad playing posture), and so on. I am of the opinion that accident prevention is much more effective than damage control.
CrimSun I don't disagree. I may have missed it but I am curious why anyone would be convinced that he will not work to perfect his technique as he grows and matures. It's possible that right now they realize that he's young and if he wants to truly be successful as a drummer it's more important at this point in his life for him to play as much different music as often as possible. I can't speak for them but as a drummer with a similarly aged son who is musically inclined this is exactly what I would wish for him to have. Sorry if this reads weird, I type how I talk.
Max is basically Mike during the Images and Words era
That's beautiful. It made me feel good.
OMG 😮 his kid looks exactly like him back in the 80s 90s!
So nice to see father and son sharing the same passion. Go on Max, eager to listen to your music.
Great video!! You cant beat a parents bound with their kids. What a fantastic thing to have and cherish for a long time. Mike you are 100% correct there is no greater joy than watching your kid succeed in their passion. Best of luck! CHEERS!

YEE!
Badass! Thanks for sharing!
Mike, your ability to seamlessly negotiate insane time signature changes is unparalleled. Your ability to play spontaneously within those time signature changes is discombobulating, in a pleasant way!
I can see your son is well on the road to taking it to the next level.
Wow!
Yep, there's nothing like seeing your kids take the ball and running with it.
They are so just so awesome
An absolute drum God Phenom that Mike Portnou is, within the best in the world complementing a 16 year old, let alone being his son. It CAN'NOT be topped
Hey guys! I just saw Sons of Adam on tour in Carrboro N.C.Omg! Mike,I think you're fantastic and so inspiring! Really cool to see your son and you in this vid.
this is the coolest video ever. hell yeah
So cool to see
Great story Sabian, Thanks Mike and Max!
Got my cymbal pack of XSR’s... went out today in the desert to play.. haven’t played in 4 years... I was soooo pumped to play.. I was rusty, but those XSR’s made me sound great again!!
Max looks suspiciously like John Myung, strange...
year right, his hair, eyes, and nose specially, so much like john myung
Uh oh....Mike’s wife got some splainin to do....
He looks like Mike did when he was younger.
That was awesome!
I so love this, with my bones!
How can he NOT get lessons from his Dad?!
Dustin Platt ikr. maybe he is not very good at teaching
Dustin Platt he explained in the video
Because Mike dont like teaching drum, he also not constantly at home. Busy man maybe 😂
cuz he sucks?
Silesian Troll he's good though. He plays in time, complicatedbthings, and odd time signatures. Not to mention both fast and slow. He is a great drummer.
Good stuff! This was great!
AWESOME!!!
alllrighhht..great advice from mike plus i grew up with the same situation!!alrighhht max!!
Very cool. I remember when the Sabian "Max Splash" cymbals came out way back.
Max Stacks
@jamieharr4459 Yea those Max Stax are awesome
It doesn't hurt to already have a cymbal named after you!
Lol he's so happy at the ending almost I love it
That's so cool!
great to see generations
My dad just yelled at me because I didn't play well my first drum excercise back in 2002. First and Last attempt with him. All the things I learnt from that was with another proffessors and by myself. Would really be nice to have a Dad like Mike, someone who enjoy playing with his/her kids.
So cool...did the same thing with my son
Sabian supporter here. I've stuck with them since the departure from the first company they started . That is Zildjian for those who don't know.
this is amazing
max splash 16 Year Old already? .... man .. I'm old... 😐
Amazing how much Max looks just like a young Mike.
When Dream and Day Unite!!!!! When Mike and Max jam!!!!!!
he used to be my neighbor when i was younger awesome dude i played with his dog
Saw him tonight with Code Orange at the Slipknot show! Great stuff!! 🤘
Very cool vid!
How cool
Want those cymbals
Need that shirt
Nice to see you and your son in a video together dude :)
That's a beautiful YEE-shirt
fantastic guys. music has always been a great family activity. screw the trolls/haters. whether you are into Portnoy or not you gotta love a father and son sharing experiences and being close. .. to the guy with the Jason Bonham comment--- I'm sure Jason's just fine with the doors his father opened. he still had to put thousands of hours of practice and hard work into it to keep those doors opened.
They're identical!!
Look at old Mike pics and look at Max.
max must have a project band with tye trujilo
Agdis Hardeka up
Excellent!! \m/.............
That’s the feel good shit! Nice one!
It’s cool to see that mike still has some octobans with the dream theater logo on em 🤙
Hell yeah... I wanna see him playing lol..
Killer Mike! Your a great man
very cool
If Max has half of his dad’s imagination he’s already great 👍😎
I'll be honest, when I first heard of Max Portnoy I felt like the guy will be forced to stay in his father's shadow. And on the contrary, the thoughts that being the son of the legend, he will get undeserved recognition. Or whatever, he will be the "next Mike Portnoy".
But boi, this dude the drummer and song writer of Tallah. He isn't no "next Mike Portnoy". He is Max fucking Portnoy, the guy has blown my mind and proved himself. Which isn't easy when you have such large shoes to fill up. I am glad he chose his own path, and showed us all what this guy is made up of.
I need to see Tallah live holy fuck who says metal is dead when our generation is putting out bangers like this
What a great dad
I only play hhx series because of Mike Portnoy and Sabian's quality !
Hello from Honduras !
only HHX? Portnoy uses lots of AAX and HH also ;)
Max has got some phenomenal hair, just saying.
Amazee
So cool!!! =D
Max's shirt though. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Mike Portnoy is the ultimate humble bragger
Perfect father for a perfect son..
Yeah Max absorb your father's god given talent. Isn't there anything better than experiencing your child taking over what' the most important thing is for you? I don't think so.
luf seeing Dream theater Logo at the octa...😀
Too cool for me man
Max is wearing the fire merch
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was a "then and now" video....holy hell!!
Cool. Nice Video. They have fun. That great. Love it. Idea: I think Mike's style of playing is similar to that of Simon Phillips. The biggest event would be when Mike and Simon would play together. The two best drummer of the earth! So the kids can see how it goes! (-:
There's hope for the future.
Thorin Oakenshield and his son? :D
I love the kids shirt 😂😂😂😂
lol. the chimes at the end.
"Scene kid wears Yee shirt"
fucking hell.....emotional
His eyes are so warm and careful when he listens to his son's talking. That made me so happy. A greatest drum player in this planet and a greatest father as well. Moreover, I praise his tremendous talent that he admits his own limitation as a teacher, not a player.
TIL Mike Portnoy's son enjoys old memes
Daddy raised him right 😄👍🤘👊
That s the great father
