What's fantastic about The Dance of Eternity is that Mr. Portnoy not only managed to write one of the most iconic drum lines ever created for a progressive piece, he also made it with rudiments and patterns every drummer in a basic to intermediate level is able to play. Not only that, every groove fits like a glove with the melodic parts of the song. The drums in this song are so musical they don't need thousands of extra notes, it's just what's necessary to make the drums, like Stepario says, flow with the song.

I absolutely agree. I listen do the music that's playing behind a certain seen on a movie and I think of the person that created all of it and thought it all up.
I don't think they are really "modern" anymore. It's more like they are among the biggest influences of modern prog drummers. And this is NO disrespect, I just look at the whole picture a bit differently.
On a less technical level, there is a drummer that's legendary in my circles for the musicality he used to bring to his drum tracks, a real ability to elevate simple songs to another level. Listen to Uli Kusch's work from back when he was the drummer for Helloween.
Excellent presentation brother, what I love the most about him is how smooth he can travel throughout the nuances of the other players. I discover this band back in 1992 and it help me deal with a broken heart...I had lost my brother and music from them helped and inspired me to become a better drummer. Hands down to you hermano...Como el me ha inspirado en 30+ años, tu has logrado mi respeto como batero. Cheers
This was awesome. One of my favourite drummers has always been Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden. I’m not a drummer but have always loved the musicality even with his 1000 piece kit.
MP was a significant part of my musical education so the dance of eternity is engraved in my memory. As for the next drummer, either Marco Minnemann or Virgil Donati.
Marco is absolutely incredible and so humble. I saw him in a clinic, then got to go out to dinner afterwards with him & Chad Wackerman. Such a cool memory
Thank you for not overlaying the drums with the music. I was surprised, that I really could hear the music from my memory and recognize the song parts he was drumming. Such amazingly musical drumming.
Gracias Mike Portnoy 🔥

Agreed Man, Awake was an eye opener for me back in 90s, it changed the way I approached drumming. And that's why Mike Mangini has always loved Portnoy, eventhough Mangini was one of the first to do the one arm thing you like to do back in the 90s and he participated in the fastest drummer competitions... but he loves Portnoy for his musicality. it's unique beautiful elegant and majestic. It's make music and his band shine. That's exactly why some of the comparisons done on RUclips piss me off, technic and speed is amazing especially nowadays its getting crazy but you got to respect this type of masterpiece 👏.
Neil Peart was doing the reverse fill around the toms WELL before this, not taking away anything from this performance, as Peart was a HUGE influence of Portnoy.
So, the chance of getting your leg over is probably the key motivator for practice. Noted. ;-) Fun Fact: I saw Mike sing the ending few bars of "Surrounded" after James threw a huge tantrum and stalked offstage in a fit of pique - Nottingham Rock City, 1992.
@@Elevenbravo_ABN :) An audience member (who was quite drunk and out of key as I recall) started singing with him as the moment overtook restraint. James span around, slapped his mic against a bass drum and stomped offstage - absolute Diva moment. They finished up with Mike singing, then played Bombay Vindaloo...........and the support band were Damn the Machine with Chris Poland on guitar! Awesome gig.
@@MercutioUK2006 If only someone had been video recording! It Sounds like funny incident, though I can almost understand getting annoyed as a performer, when you’re putting your heart and soul into your singing.
@@Elevenbravo_ABN Oh, for sure. Then a whole gaggle of roadies came out looking hard and threw the guy out - THAT was bullshit. No real videos kicking around at the time, but I shall always remember it. That, and for some reason one of the guys in DtM was wearing a massive foam stetson!
Still my favorite drum track by MP is 6:00. So god damn groovy and innovative. You are spot on about Mike. His brilliance is not at all about technique or exceptional complexity, it has always been about creativity and musicality. And for that he was one of my favorites for a long time. Howerer I felt he lost a lot of that in the 2000s and I still mostly listen to his/their older stuff. But I still love the guy.
Damn, that is the best and most detailed breakdown of this masterpiece I have ever seen! I may not be a drummer, but I did understand his explaining and all those things that I feel listening to this song (a few tenths of thousands of times that I have) came to a deep understanding to me. We all thank the god himself, Mike Portnoy for the stellar talent, the hard work and the love for the fans. And for sharing with us the creative genius he and Dream Theater are!

Dude, it's so true, the thing about MP, is that he is the "choppiest" drummer I know that is also a GOD in terms of musicality. and YOU my fried is following his footsteps. I don't know if you saw no one other than Mr. Dennis Chambers singing your praises. You are in fact SUPER MUSICAL. Which I LOOOOVE. Drum on! :) Cheers from Canada.
Ya're so right dude.... i listen to Mr Mike Portnoy since 25 years now.... and he is ,for me , the Best Drummer for what you said MUSICALITY... THANKS so much for this video... stay true stay metal and long live to all the drummers all around the world 😂
I grow up with that hole album doing "air drumming" with my old brother. Two years ago I saw DT on live. This song is basically the most important song of my life, maybe.
Mr. Mike Portnoy never been the best drummer, but he still IS one of the best composer/musician/songwriter/producer, etc all in one. His musicality is flowless, and He is a living legend. He was very kind in person too, such a great memory, I feel lucky that I could talk to him and he was very patient :) His DT Era is one of a kind, but also his side projects too, absolutely love his work from around 98-2006 (and eversince) both in DT and in other bands. SDOIT one of the most underrated DT album, but his drumming on that album IMO one of his best work ever throughout the double disk. Live at Budokan drum cam full video is something every musicians should watch at least ones. I watched it 1000x times though :D
This why MP is much better than Mangini into the DT music and a better musician at all. He has a sort of symphonic approach with drum orchestration that fit perfect with other instruments not just in rhythm but in melody too. That is the reason for the huge amount of pieces of his kits.
You did a really great job explaining why Mike Portnoy is so brilliant and such fantastic composer and drummer. Lots of people like to shit on him and I don't see why. I have been a fan of Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy since pull me under came out, and he is one of the reasons that I started drumming. Respect
Awesome video, Portnoy was huge for my development as well. I had a similar experience when I learned Schism from Tool, it really blew my mind open to what can be done on the drums.
Just so everyone knows, YES, Neil Peart was doing those high-hat accents with arm cross-over sticking LONG before Mike Portnoy. He was ALSO doing tom fills from low to high tom before Mike Portnoy. FACT: Mike Portnoy was HEAVILY influenced by Neil Peart.
After watching this, It only makes me think of Carl Palmer. Much of what Mike did here screams of the first new generation free thinking genius. Please examine some of ELP's work and decipher it for us, you genius in your own right.
Who else thinks this guy should make a paid membership lesson thing. I love hearing him explain the drums in my favourite songs and it really helps when learning that piece.
You should see Neil Peart. He was world best drummer till he passed away. He believes like you. Practice practice practice. Lot of work. Like you say you get better everyday by practicing. Thank your one of a kind .just like Neil Peart.
Aside from amazing chops, his mind for composition is other-worldly. I love his hi-hat, ride and splash accents on 'These Walls'. Absolutely my favorite drummer of all time.
Same! Hearing and learning Dream-Theater songs really changed my drumming. Just like what you said, it opened up a lot of ways for me on how to play the drums. First song I learned was A fortune in lies and it took me a while to learn it. Then I heard Ytse Jam and Metropolis - Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper". Those songs changed everything! So thank you Mike Portnoy. You changed a lot of lives. Stay inspiring!
Great video! Liquid drum theater is a gem from start to finish, Portnoy is a true legend, and those few years at the turn of the millennium were just pure magic... miss those times.
For me it was Peart. Then I found Portnoy. Been listening to DT since the beginning. Now I found you. Holy shit. I'm a bassist but always considered myself a rythmnist. Love drums and this blows me away. Bravo young man
I taught myself using this dvd. It is an absolutely incredible tool for drum learning and progression, from one of the greatest drummers ever. Amen to every sentiment in this video

Brilliant drumming from both gentlemen in this video. Your understanding of drumming is very impressive. Mike Portnoy is just so good. Not just a great drummer but an amazing musician. I'm so grateful for this video. 🙏
My fav. drumming is still what Tony Wiliams did on "Stuff" from Miles Davis' album "Miles in the Sky". That was some cool Jungle-like groove long before the style was invented. No one has repeated him.

After the drum superstars of the 70's- Bill Bruford, Ian Paice, Neil Peart, Carl Palmer, etc, etc came the 90's. Mike Portnoy is still the King. Seen him live at least 15-20 times over the years and his entertainment value cannot be measured. He makes it fun every time. Estepario may be the new guard- so talented and a cool Dude. Keep rockin' boys!
I saw him give a drum clinic in Dallas in the early 90's. The store was packed and there was no more parking spaces. When Mike showed up they wouldn't let him in the building because they said it was too crowded. The guy at the door didn't realize who he was 😂. Eventually, things got cleared up and they let him in and he came up to the second floor of the store and jammed. It was awesome. When he started explaining some of his beats he sounded like a math professor. He was really cool.
Fantastic video and great breakdown of one of my favorite DT songs played by my favorite drummer and hero Mike Portnoy. The best way to describe these drum parts is tastefully complicated.
Mike Portnoy is the man that brought me to pick up the sticks in the first place, such an inspirational drummer and amazing composer. You should check out Jay Postones from TesseracT, outstanding technique and composition there too.

This is the best analysis of TDOE I've ever seen, incredibly informative and also very funny at the same time. And yeah, Mike is a genius, my favorite drummer ever since I heard him for the first time almost 22 years ago.
There is a live version of DOE called dance of instrumental, that to me is even KILLER than the studio version. Plus, he plays on two kit’s. There is just a drums only version only. He is wearing a black bandanna and has glasses on.

I heard this song by chance and as soon as Mike came in with the drums I was locked in until the song was over. Portnoy and Carey are probably the best creative modern day prog metal drummers. Favourites of mine for sure.
I don't think they are really "modern" anymore. It's more like they are among the biggest influences of modern prog drummers. And this is NO disrespect, I just look at the whole picture a bit differently.
@@Mulukkis fair enough. Never really thought about it but, ya they're both in the later stages of their careers. I would agree.
And they both learned from the one and only Neil Peart.
On a less technical level, there is a drummer that's legendary in my circles for the musicality he used to bring to his drum tracks, a real ability to elevate simple songs to another level. Listen to Uli Kusch's work from back when he was the drummer for Helloween.
Impresionante.
His pure honesty is refreshing! He is incredibly talented and it's an honor to watch his videos!!!🤘
Clive was better
MP was a significant part of my musical education so the dance of eternity is engraved in my memory. As for the next drummer, either Marco Minnemann or Virgil Donati.
Marco is absolutely incredible and so humble. I saw him in a clinic, then got to go out to dinner afterwards with him & Chad Wackerman. Such a cool memory
Did you watch both of them doing the DT audition?
Thank you for not overlaying the drums with the music.
I was surprised, that I really could hear the music from my memory and recognize the song parts he was drumming.
Such amazingly musical drumming.
Gracias Mike Portnoy 🔥
This is the most METAL RUclips video EVER!! Portnoy’s work in The Dance of Eternity one of the best drum tracks of all time! This video deserves the biggest devil horns of all time!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Grande Mike Portnoy!!!Excelente reacción bro...Saludos✋🏻
"no one has seen before" hahah, I bought that DVD when it came out
Neil Peart was doing the reverse fill around the toms WELL before this, not taking away anything from this performance, as Peart was a HUGE influence of Portnoy.
and the swing part as well.... a wink to respect Peart I guess.
Perfect timing. Was just drumming the Outro to The Glass Prison a few minutes ago.
Thanks so much! So glad to see this review of the king!
I'd also love to hear you do a review of some of Haken's stuff. Ray is the next Portnoy!
So, the chance of getting your leg over is probably the key motivator for practice.
Noted.
;-)
Fun Fact: I saw Mike sing the ending few bars of "Surrounded" after James threw a huge tantrum and stalked offstage in a fit of pique - Nottingham Rock City, 1992.
Lol. What happened? Was it a PA system issue that made him upset?
@@Elevenbravo_ABN
:)
An audience member (who was quite drunk and out of key as I recall) started singing with him as the moment overtook restraint.
James span around, slapped his mic against a bass drum and stomped offstage - absolute Diva moment. They finished up with Mike singing, then played Bombay Vindaloo...........and the support band were Damn the Machine with Chris Poland on guitar!
Awesome gig.
@@MercutioUK2006
If only someone had been video recording!
Absolutely amazing... For me this is the best drum track ever and he is the best in business. Thanks for existing Mike!
Great sounding drums Mike's using, especially that snare. The huge purple Tamas!
The Purple Monster. He also had Green & Red, for Europe & Japan. The purple is my favorite though.
Literally one of my 3 fav drummers. Him, Neil Peart, and The Rev all made me want to play drums.
Portnoy is the youngest Modern Drummer Hall of Fame inductee ever for good reason.
Ya're so right dude.... i listen to Mr Mike Portnoy since 25 years now.... and he is ,for me , the Best Drummer for what you said MUSICALITY... THANKS so much for this video... stay true stay metal and long live to all the drummers all around the world 😂
Portnoy is the most creative metal drummer. This song is a masterpiece!
My favorite drummer...
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>> portnoy
I grow up with that hole album doing "air drumming" with my old brother. Two years ago I saw DT on live.
This song is basically the most important song of my life, maybe.
Mr. Mike Portnoy never been the best drummer, but he still IS one of the best composer/musician/songwriter/producer, etc all in one. His musicality is flowless, and He is a living legend. He was very kind in person too, such a great memory, I feel lucky that I could talk to him and he was very patient :)
His DT Era is one of a kind, but also his side projects too, absolutely love his work from around 98-2006 (and eversince) both in DT and in other bands. SDOIT one of the most underrated DT album, but his drumming on that album IMO one of his best work ever throughout the double disk.
Live at Budokan drum cam full video is something every musicians should watch at least ones. I watched it 1000x times though :D
So AWESOME, never heard of the son. Dude is on it. Must listen to the song with the other members.
Thank you for great vids !
do Neil Peart next. He also my favourite drummer as portnoy as.
That fill from low to high I saw it the first time from Neil Peart on 2112
Yes on Temples of Syrinx
Who else thinks this guy should make a paid membership lesson thing. I love hearing him explain the drums in my favourite songs and it really helps when learning that piece.
You should see Neil Peart. He was world best drummer till he passed away. He believes like you. Practice practice practice. Lot of work. Like you say you get better everyday by practicing. Thank your one of a kind .just like Neil Peart.
I miss Portnoy in DT ;-(
we all do, buddy. DT hasn't been the same without him.
Everybody does
I didn’t even know DT was still making music. 😂 i mean… without Portnoy it’s not really DT…🤷🏼♂️
Aside from amazing chops, his mind for composition is other-worldly. I love his hi-hat, ride and splash accents on 'These Walls'. Absolutely my favorite drummer of all time.
Gavin Harrison???
This guy understands that it's one thing to play someone else's drum parts but it's another thing all together to create those parts in your head from a blank slate. Thank you for paying respect to one of the greatest Prog drummers of all time.
This song DEFINITELY affected my playing. I used to play along to most of this album... One of my favorites.
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>> portnoy
I saw him give a drum clinic in Dallas in the early 90's. The store was packed and there was no more parking spaces. When Mike showed up they wouldn't let him in the building because they said it was too crowded. The guy at the door didn't realize who he was 😂. Eventually, things got cleared up and they let him in and he came up to the second floor of the store and jammed. It was awesome. When he started explaining some of his beats he sounded like a math professor. He was really cool.
I'm not a drummer but I really enjoy his creativity and musicality... it change the way i see music... and it helps me in my music career...
Thanks for this video! Mike Portnoy's drumming can looks "simple" but when you listen to the details it's amazing! and to play it right on time with the band is incredible!
Amazing video Jorge, and you have expressed the great difference between MP and the other drummers. Musicality!! He is the greatest musicality speaking. My favourite ever. Muchas muchas gracias!
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>> portnoy
Used to watch this DVD every day. In the menu you had the option of selecting different camera angles. Loved this DVD man
This is the best analysis of TDOE I've ever seen, incredibly informative and also very funny at the same time.
I always enjoy your videos, and of course, I am big van of Mike Portnoy as well. You have such a great philosophy for life. One that I am drawn to. And of course, I love your drumming. Keep doing what you do! and Thank You for sharing your music and words of wisdom. :)
I heard this song by chance and as soon as Mike came in with the drums I was locked in until the song was over. I had to listen to it over and over again just to understand everything that was happening, it's been so fun coming back every time and picking it apart a little more so I can get an even deeper look into it.
Wow 1st Mario on here & now Mike..
Feel privileged to be part of this community.
Another insightfull awesome lesson/video.
Thanks dude.. excellent work laying pipe 🤣😂.. anyone who can learn this in a week deserves a reward. 🍻
MP is my Hero since i've started to play the Drum. Now Estepario is another one... Both in the same Video... what a woderful day!
I bought this DVD direct from Hudson music when it came out first and it changed my life forever!! Thank you so much for analysing this masterpiece 🤘🤘. It truly is a piece of genius played by one of the most musical geniuses to ever grace this earth Mr Mike Portnoy🙌🙌🙌. 100% respect to your own playing El Estepario!! Legend 🤘🤘
