The best part is that, with a strategic trade or two (Nyquist immediately springs to mind), they can still easily keep Laine around as well. For the first time in their 22-year existence, things are _finally_ looking up for the CBJ.
Buffalo had a great final two months. They cratered in the middle of the season because of goaltending injuries. They were down to their fifth and sixth goalies in January and February. They would have had 100 point pace if they played the rest of the season the way they did the last two months EDIT: Thank you for the RJ tribute, Tree. Would love to see a full retrospective on him. As a Buffalo fan, I think you’d do him justice.
As a Hawks fan, I’m glad we’re finally getting the rebuild we actually need. I’m sad to see the players I grew up watching go like this, but such is life. Stan Bowman fell for the fatal trap most GMs fall for: the walk of decadence. He desperately tried to keep a fading dynasty alive instead of doing what the team actually needed which was to start the rebuild THREE YEARS AGO. Now we have to live with the suffering he brought within the last year with his god awful trades (minus the Hagel trade).
As a Kings fan I feel your pain. I think the Kings might be emerging from their keep the dynasty cap hell doldrums finally. At least you got 3 cups and you can always say at least I'm not a San Jose fan.
I still think Stan Bowman was overrated as a GM. Panarin was by far his best acquisition but he couldn't keep him because he blew the cap on declining veterans like Seabrook and Keith. When the Seabrook contract finally went away, he immediately blew the cap on Seth Jones, so now keeping DeBrincat and Dach will be a Sophie's choice for the new GM.
I was a kings fan from birth to 2017. I had been born and raised in Vegas. I went to school right near the arena and the Las Vegas shooting. Going to that first game was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life, one that I’ll never forget. That being said, holy shit have they lost any and all good will. I’ll still be a fan, I’m accustomed to bad teams, but firing the coach that got you to the finals in your first year, trading away the most loved team mate in the way they did, treating players like shit, and just to flop that hard? Yeah, the knights aren’t a terrible team, but they make me feel terrible anyways.
To add, the existing players in the VGK team act like they are all that (especially last year) even though they have not existed for even 5 whole years. It's disgusting and makes me hate them a lot more.
As a Kraken fan, I knew we weren’t going to be good when I saw we got Hakstol to be our head coach. But we need to keep him for at least one more year so that we can strike a good draft pick next year. Once we have the youth we need (cause we’re loading up on that, which is a good thing) THEN we pull the trigger on Hakstol and bring in a good coach who’s main strength is developing. It’ll be an interesting off-season for us for sure
I was rooting for the Kraken too, but alas the Kraken aren't the Golden Knights. It's also a good thing since that first year success has gone to their heads and look how they turned out.
I was surprised that they hired Hakstol. Also, the rest of the league (save for the Golden Knights, who abstained) learned from that Golden Knights draft and managed their rosters better, so they were prepared for the Kraken draft. Also, the Kraken didn't have someone such as Marc-Andre Fleury fall into its lap like the Golden Knights did.
God damn. The Yotes are literally engaging in petplay with Arizona State. The Sun Devil's quite literally have them on a leash. Also, I can't believe Rick Jeanneret won't be in the broadcast booth next year. I'll miss his iconic calls. Going to the corporate shilling (the Raycon infomercial): Wait. Raycons can be wirelessly charged? PS: Please tell me that the Johnny Superbman voice clip for Evgeny Dadonov is a permanent fixture until Dadonov's retirement.
@@park1699 They wouldn't move the Yotes to Quebec City, it'd make an absolute fucking mockery of the divisions. Houston is more likely since they'd still be in the Central, and also has a pretty usable arena as far as I recall. @@TheShinyFeraligatr the other problem with quebec, the habs owners who have among the most influence, likely want to block it at all costs. putting a team in quebec doesnt create fans like houston would, it takes existing fans from a market the habs have a near monopoly on and creates competition.

@@chaosgreyblood I think he did a dynasty mode where he was in charge of... I think the Leafs, and he was in the ECF against the Canadiens, and Dadonov scored to secure his defeat. And we got that sound byte from him.

he'll get either trotz or cassidy but at the same time he kept blashill around for 2 more years and the philly 76ers know a thing or two about the Process™.
@@greggreg5189 Blashill was really just a development coach for the last few seasons. No reason to bring in the guy you want too early when the team is no where near ready. I do think some players did grow (Larkin, Bert, Seider). Now we need the ghost of Scotty Bowman to tie everything together and start snapping the whip.
I went to Glendale AZ once and was shocked the Coyotes played at an arena that had this open concept mall, retail center right next to the arena. It wasn’t bad!
The thing with Gibson is he “hasn’t been as good of late” because the Ducks have done nothing but get worse and worse each passing year I personally think he’s an elite goalie and the Ducks should absolutely be trying to deal every veteran player they have.
Exactly. I think all Ducks fans can agree Gibby can be that elite goalie for a good team. He had fallen off a bit but I feel that more on the team. I won’t be opposed the Ducks trading him for good value (he’s still good and in his prime) Gibby can’t steal games with this Ducks team. But if we somehow keep him, trading some vets would be key, still don’t think the Ducks are a playoff team, more of fringe playoff team but can’t wait for the season to start
the problem is not his save percentage or gaa, its the advanced stats. like goals saved above expected, gibson having a -14.3 is HORRIBLE. goals saved above expected takes away the play of the team Infront of the goalie, it assigns a value to a shot based on where the shot came from, without factoring in any team defensive play like other stats would. a 0 in goals saved above expected is the average nhl goalie, so gibson is allowing 14 more goals on shots that the league average goalie would have saved in the exact same position. it is impossible to completely take away the effect team defense has, because how much time a player has to take the shot and disguise where hes aiming does matter, so i would expect gibson to improve on a better team. the problem is by how much. hes probably a league average goalie at most imo.
I swear if the Flyers end up hiring DeBoer, I'm going to blow a gasket. Which means that 100% is what's going to happen because this organization is so incompetent.
This season as a Canucks fan gave me some hope that with some offseason tweaking this core could do something (if they can get more talented depth players and add some grit, as well as fixing the special teams) they could be an underrated playoff team. But it’s the Canucks, so something will go wrong.
I have a friend of mine who got into hockey during the playoffs and asked about a team not in it this year that could make it next. The Canucks were my answer. Loved how they played under Boudreau, could use some minor tweaks and the Pacific especially with a down Vegas is fairly manageable to be a playoff team if you’re competent. Now to see if they’re legit or a fluke.
“Winnipeg is the Columbus of Canada” is a compliment to how Canadians see Winnipeg. They see Winnipeg in the same way we Americans might see somewhere like Gary, Detroit, or Camden. That being said, their quality of life is about on par with one of the safer cities like Minneapolis, because Canada.
About 20 years after learning of albums existence i still cant hear winnipeg without thinking of certain venetian snares album that is tribute to all winnipegians hoping to move to vancouver(or something to that effect) xD
The same problems that did in Winnipeg during their first go round, will start to resurface in the years to come. This city will always be at a disadvantage against the NHL's haves.
It does ease the sting of Rick Jeanneret retiring. All Pegula needs to do is let the guys he’s hired do their jobs. He’s done that with the Bills and it’s worked. That would be icing on the cake.
@@austinemms9772 I think the pegulas finally realize that, hopefully, after this year. The reason he tampered so much with the sabres was because he was a hockey fan. However he bought the bills in addition knowing they'd be better financially, but he he know clue about football so he hired people. Since he was a hockey fan, he probably thought he knew everything there was to it, and that's why he constantly tampered with the sabres. Thank UT for giving the Kraken the benefit of the doubt during their segment. I expect Seattle to be busy this offseason and I can trust Ron Francis to make the right moves. The least the Kraken can do heading into season 2 is to surpass their win total of 27.
As a Montreal fan I can confidently say we needed a year like this. Now a real rebuild has been kickstarted and we can really turn the page on the Bergevin era. It's looking real good.
For the first time since I was 6 years old, I’m so excited for the next season of Sabres hockey. Smite me if all goes wrong, but I feel happy to like the Sabres again
It's a damn shame the Isles had to end up in this video this year. Even bigger shame that they decided to just blow it all up. Now I'm worried they'll just sink back to mediocrity after Trotz was fired and we did nothing to fix our real issues. Still, this is a nice video to see!
There's no way they should have fired Trotz. Playing all those away games to start the season pretty much buried them early. He's going to have success wherever he goes next.
@@philly_sports1558 Oh for sure. He had issues but he was still the right call for the team I feel. Nobody could've anticipated the absolute disaster this season could've been and I don't think blowing it all up was the call
Isles need a dman who can move the puck. Greene and chara in the line up almost every night was brutal. How many icing calls from bad passes did we have to see every single night.
They didn't really blow it up though. Roster will still be pretty similar to the 2019-21 teams still just with Lambert instead of Trotz. Free agency will decide whether or not they have a shot at bouncing back to their usual form
@@NolanEgbert the team is still there. I mean it’s honestly a good team. Have to get rid of chara and Greene. The top 2 defensive lines are solid. Wahlstrom still has to develop. Bellows could be good as well. Replace Matt Martin with Ross Johnston on the 4th line. I see us back in the playoffs next year.
Dead on with my Sabres, Tree, though for once I'm not actually mad about it. I especially love what Donny Meatballs is doing with the team. I forgot what competent roster building and properly utilizing player strengths looks like. Granato gets the best out of everyone no matter how far down the depth chart they are. I've especially loved seeing Dahlin (my favorite player on the current roster since he was drafted) finally play with confidence. The Tage breakout was also awesome. My favorite personnel thing has been Tuch, though. I love that man so much. His play is great, but he actually brought fun back to hockey for this team. These guys care again, and it's because he's single handedly created a relaxed atmosphere in the locker room. If my Sabres can maintain this momentum and make this a full blown turn around, Tuch will probably have his number retired in Buffalo before he retires himself. At any rate he'll get that C, though I think it'll be another season as Kyle Okposo has earned it for this coming year for sure. One last thing: I am going to miss Rick so fucking much. That man was a major part of the soundtrack of my childhood and has made Sabres hockey fun even the blue and gold were complete dogshit. I cried when he announced he'd be retiring at the end of this season last summer, and I cried when I watched that final game, which that clip you posted at the end was from.
Seeing your face kind of breaks the image I had of your persona... then you talking and I get over it. Keep it coming! Super entertaining and quite informative.
Every section on the Hawks should just be reading segments of the Kyle Beach depositions until every executive responsible has been fired. Any talk about hockey is doing exactly what they want and “moving on”
Depressing that you're 100% right about my Flyers. They've been self-delusional since the Lindros years. Need an a total enema, top to bottom. Flush it all out.
Funny you picked 1984 as the "house number" for the address as the Islanders Drive for Five that year hit an "oil slick". Props for remembering Denis Potvin's sometimes forgotten brother, Jethro and Boss.
As a Dallas fan I can tell you how Lindy Ruff works: he can make any team light it the fuck up offensively but defense and goaltending vanish. Happened in Dallas and now it's happening to Jersey

As a Devils fan, it’s frustrating seeing us have great players like Hughes, Bratt, and Hamilton standing up and making big plays, but then looking to our goalie wondering which one of the three backup-tier goalies were gonna be playing. If we get a 82 game goalie then we’ll be able to make a lot of noise.

As a Sharks fan I feel so sorry for our new GM having to deal with the mess the team is currently in. Also knowing the Sharks we are probably going to keep Bob for some reason as we watch Trotz and Cassidy get hired to other teams.
I expected sad music for the Sharks part, like Remembering Mallory from San Andreas because it is the end of an era. Doug Wilson is gone and while I do think the old pieces remain because I don’t think they can get rid of them, they’re a shell of their old glory. I guess the consolation prize for seeing Vegas and Philly in here. Opp packs up for both those teams
@@zerbot750 Nope. Those teams have nothing to do with the Sharks aside from being geographically close. I couldn't care less about baseball. Basketball and football I could care less about, but not much less.
The Senators can't be sold to Quebec city. There's a bunch of different groups lined up to buy the team and finally build that downtown arena if/when Melnyk's daughters choose to sell (hopefully real soon) . As long as there's potential buyers that don't want to move the team, the league won't let them move.
Plus, if Ottawa "moves", it would be Houston or Milwaukee. Calgary might be the vulnerable one, but nowhere close to Arizona of course. In fact, I'd bet the Coyotes get evicted from Arizona State before they get a deal for a new arena done.
As a devils fan you were spot on with the goaltending being the main reason why the team sucked. However I have disagree with your one off take on the defense, it has improved a lot this season. The polarizing damon severson not only had a great year offensively but defensively as well which was his greatest weakness. Offense and defense are there just need stable goaltending
Islanders did not choose Barzal over trotz. The idea that there was some fizzling argument has been disproven. Was there maybe som thought that Barzal felt he was held back? Sure, but back to back conference finals appearances is a lot farther than most go in their entire careers, let alone 2 straight seasons before the age of 26. Barzal wasn’t the reason Trotz was fired.
It was a real enjoyable 2nd half of the season for us Sabres fans, pieces are in place like tree said hope is there just really need to figure out the goaltending situation UPK isn't developing. It's really unfortunate Rick wasn't around for a cup but I appreciate the tribute for sure.
I'm starting to think the Sharks lost their soul to the devil because they lost a game of Poker to a Beetle the devil also just likes to watch a team do terrible cause he's evil of course.
6:40 I'm actually offended by that statement, Tree. Not because of the Red Wings, but because the local ECHL team just HAPPENS to don orange and black as their colors.
The Golden Knights are the poster child for LTIR misuse, but so many people wanna focus on the Lightning instead, which bugs me a ton. As for the Senators, I agree with you, Tree. Eugene Melnyk did hold that club back for so long in various ways. After they get their ownership situation straight, let's see if they can make some meaningful progress on and off the ice.
"Everyone tells failing teams to keep at it, someday you'll break through and win the Cup, it's only a matter of time! I have a counterargument to that: the San Jose Sharks." C'mon, man, you could have pulled that punch just a little. We're already in so much pain...

I feel the same way.
To add, the existing players in the VGK team act like they are all that (especially last year) even though they have not existed for even 5 whole years. It's disgusting and makes me hate them a lot more.
@@davidtran2026 to be fair, most hockey teams that have been good act like that

@@marcus813 I mean they could’ve taken Carey Price or Tarasenko. Both those guys were unprotected, but big AAV’s scared them away.
God damn. The Yotes are literally engaging in petplay with Arizona State. The Sun Devil's quite literally have them on a leash.
Also, I can't believe Rick Jeanneret won't be in the broadcast booth next year. I'll miss his iconic calls.

As a Sabres fan thank you for the tribute to RJ at the end. It’s hard to put into words what he has meant to the franchise.
"Someone of great talent will want to play [in Columbus]."
Really takes on a whole new meaning now, doesn't it?
I went to Glendale AZ once and was shocked the Coyotes played at an arena that had this open concept mall, retail center right next to the arena.
It wasn’t bad!
Went there to see them play my Leafs and Westgate was cool. Also the Cardinals stadium is down the block.
i went there years ago and it was an awesome location. too bad they were so negligent with it
The thing with Gibson is he “hasn’t been as good of late” because the Ducks have done nothing but get worse and worse each passing year I personally think he’s an elite goalie and the Ducks should absolutely be trying to deal every veteran player they have.
Trade him to NJ. We have plenty of players to throw around. Zacha especially needs a new start.
Now that you mention this, would TOR be interested in trading one of their top offensive weapons (not Matthews) for Gibson?
@@rwa2play no, it would be a pick+prospect most likely
the problem is not his save percentage or gaa, its the advanced stats. like goals saved above expected, gibson having a -14.3 is HORRIBLE. goals saved above expected takes away the play of the team Infront of the goalie, it assigns a value to a shot based on where the shot came from, without factoring in any team defensive play like other stats would. a 0 in goals saved above expected is the average nhl goalie, so gibson is allowing 14 more goals on shots that the league average goalie would have saved in the exact same position. it is impossible to completely take away the effect team defense has, because how much time a player has to take the shot and disguise where hes aiming does matter, so i would expect gibson to improve on a better team. the problem is by how much. hes probably a league average goalie at most imo.
I swear if the Flyers end up hiring DeBoer, I'm going to blow a gasket. Which means that 100% is what's going to happen because this organization is so incompetent.
Hey, if they hire PDB they'll make it to (and lose in) the cup final in their first season! And then fall way, way off.
@@jonmendelson1104 That's what was supposed to happen when we hired AV, but he only got us to the 2nd round before the wheels came off.

Well… you got your wish, I guess!
Thanks tree, now I got the “head on” commercial from the 2000s stuck in my head
I wouldn’t say it’s Columbus but moreso Sacramento in many ways
It’s not a college town, it’s a cute little town but it ain’t that fun or flashy
Says a lot about how much America has fallen in terms of livable cities.
The words "Minneapolis" and "safe" do not belong in the same sentence anymore.
Seeing the progress Buffalo made this season was awesome. Seeing Eichel and Vegas fall out of a playoff spot was icing on the cake.
--Buffalo Sabres: "They actually get to experience this phenomenon called 'hope.'"
--Chicago Blackhawks: "This year was divine retribution applied directly to the f*cking forehead."

This was the worst season I've seen for the Montreal Canadiens, and I've been watching NHL hockey for over 40 years.

The wait was worth it.
I don't want to see the Sens leave Ottawa but Melnyk passing was such a blessing for the team. So many years of great players wasted.
Melnyk passing makes it less likely they'll ever move.
The goaltending had more problems than Ruff’s coaching style, although it didn’t help.

As long as there's potential buyers that don't want to move the team, the league won't let them move.
