Now I got copied?! (Aeropress Dice edition)

- IMPORTANT - PLEASE DO NOT HARASS THIS PERSON!
After yesterdays video I discovered someone had copied my Coffee Brewing Dice for Aeropress. Amazing!
Here's some good stuff:
iOS app: itunes.apple.c...
webapp from Winnie We: thewinniewu.gi...
Android app mentioned in the comments:
play.google.co...
"I'm not angry at you, just disappointed" - worse way to be told off by dad. Brilliant video.
What a calm and considered video. It’s refreshing to see someone engage with a problem like this and show such professionalism, especially on the internet.
Couldn't phrase it any better
It's also some genius reverse psychology coming from James here. Because people will still harsh the crap out of that guy and everyone will fear copying James while he remains "the good and professional guy".
Not that the copycat doesn't deserve it though...
This is a very elegant way to punish the person in the wrong... make a similar product available for free. I love it.
So Jan deleted the post with the dice... Great calm and polite video, role model!
Your delivery on explaining how this is a problem is top notch. You are always a class act. And one thing i admire is that you are always willing to chat. The copier of the dice could easily have emailed you and asked. You seem like a reasonable guy, plus it might have been start of a great relationship, but alas they decided to steal instead :(
What's hilarious is that the dude who copied you puts watermarks on all of his photos presumably to keep them from being stolen
He would use a watermark ... takes one to know one.
I'm sure the photo of the die covered in coffee is in high demand
@@wendtils 😍 🤣
This make me felt honor and proud that me and one of my friend got a set of genuine aeropress dice from you James. Even with the 2months waiting because we are far away in Indonses
Indonesia i meant

this guy's website roll-and-brew seems to be down now! Maybe we were too many to visit... kind of an unwanted DDos attack or has he put it offline? Anyway once again, thank you James for sharing and doing all this for the specialty coffee community. We love you!
What a kind, professional and thoughtful person you are. I am sorry people steal your ideas. But at least you showed what kind of a person you are.
I'm glad you took it so calmly, but it bothers me. If there's something I want, but can't afford, I'd rather do without than reward someone for making a cheap knock off.
I recently found a "coffee gear" site, where everything was an obvious imitation. Everything was recognizable (Aeropress & others), but never named. It really angered me.
What I learned in this video: The Coffee Wizard has spoken. It's pronounced gif.
Praise him with likes.
Oh, and don't plagiarize. For he will smite thee in the lost arts of manners and calm.
Professional Coffee Wizard is Professional.
No, gif is pronounced gif. It's not gif.
@@themonkeydrunken I've always gone with gif, though.
Graphics Interchange Format. So unless you pronounce graphics as Jraphics, it was never ‘jif’...
Hi James. Love your channel! Just purchased the app!!! Didn’t even know this existed. Keep doing what you doing!!!
Kudos for taking the high road James.
Really happy that the WAC got in touch so that these dice are now being made now under licence from you. Also good to see power of the community that Jan has taken down all the images from instagram and his site is gone now too.
A few weeks ago, on seeing this report, I might have offered an inanely English comment such as “imitation is the greatest form of flattery .”
I have, however, just been shafted by an Ebay trader with a fake Aeropress. Fortunately I have a genuine one and the fake stood out like a sore thumband I am currently trying to recoup my losses.
Being a recent convert from tea to coffee via the wonderful Aeropress I think that your concept was bordering on genius. However much I regret “missing the boat” on obtaining a genuine set on their release my recent experience of fake/ knock off/rip off items call them what you will mean I won’t be entering into the dark depths of the copier. All the best and congratulations on keeping your sense of humour. I certainly didn’t, Al.
hahah "thats great news and … just not … good typography". made my day
Basically, "my product got copied, don't buy them, use these free app and free website that does literally the same instead" lmao
As much as the internet and digital technology has spawned some amazing creativity, it also, in many ways, has cheapened and degraded the creative process. So many people just assume ownership of other people's work simply because they have easy access to it and the means to easily disseminate it. The sheer volume of content available has created a sense of entitlement to the consumer. As a content creator, I find it to be very discouraging.
You are a lot nicer than most people would be(especially me).
I think the 'Varietals' logos on his instagram appear to be quite similar to Nespresso's logo design as well
He's not a coffee professional. He is a copy professional.
I like your videos for the fact your voice is very soothing and easy on the ears.
I love that intro, it reminds me of Current TV, (Al Gore's station that was bought by Al Jazeera) and all the great content that used to be on there.
How funny, the buyer was also named Al?!
As somebody who went from brown to grey hair very quickly and very young, I'm amazed by how much brown James still had left only two years ago. I know the feeling, sir.
honest question, a good amount of white people/westerners i’ve conversed with in person and online seem to have a completely different notion of what is considered as greying of one’s hair/ageing. for example, you were amazed by how much brown hair james still had in this video, but to me, there was a substantial amount of greying in james’ hair, and obviously a lot more now.
is it a culture thing? because i know that a person that would be viewed as overweight in europe or practically everywhere, but would be considered as not only not overweight, but healthy as well.
and in general, white people age differently, i wouldn’t say they age worse, as that’s more of a personal preference, but their skin type and lack of melanin may cause premature ageing. there’s even stereotypes like black don’t crack and asian don’t raisin, but none for white people.
James, such a good guy you!
It happens in every industry. If you don't have enough money to patent everything and go to court with every copycat you are screwed
It's sad and disappointing indeed. Also, it's reality... Thanks for the app though!!!
All I can say is keep up the good work. Pays off in the end and copying only goes so far...
Andrew
Hei James
I love your way around the problem! - lets just make an app then.
Cheers André
Wow, James. What an elegant way to be gorgeous. You've got it all, dear. (Smiling face).
Can we get some gorgeous wooden aeropress dice?!?!
Not good typography... a true artist!
Whoa! Proved your point within a day. Crazy.
Scammer trash being scammer trash.
The coffee world is pretty small, and how did this fool think he was going to fly under the radar without you knowing?
At least you know now who not to waste your time with.
You could have licensed it. Maybe. It is depressing that someone felt it was okay to copy your work without your permission.
Wow. I bought the Aeropress dice on the Amsterdam coffee festival this year. I was super excited to be able to buy them there. And now you tell me that I might have bought an imitation........ I know Jan for many years and he is a great coffee enthousiast. I do not know what to think of this.
You really should address his non disclosure. Jan is lucky James has bigger fish to fry and is a considerable success globally in this industry.
So Niels, did you ask Jan about this and what was the answer?
This is interesting. I bought my set at the Amsterdam Coffee Festival last year (2018). The stand talked about Hoffmann when I purchased them and now I'm very curious if they are original or knock-offs. I'll check tomorrow.
So...?
@@no-trick-pony Guess he forgot
rip mr mactire. overdosed on coffee.
I want this on a t-shirt
Check out the podcast 99 Percent Invisible and their latest episode, 77 steps. It's relevant to this topic but maybe more applicable to the kettle knockoff. An argument could be made (and is presented in that episode) that the proliferation of the design via knock offs is exactly the mechanism for bringing the concept to the masses as you intend to do with your dice. The originators are rewarded either through superior quality (as you are quick to point out with comparison of your dice) or brand prestige.
The RB tampers are an even more direct comparison with the navy chair, as I'm sure they are both high quality and you get the brand prestige but you definitely pay a premium for it
I made print, cut and glue set of your dice for my own use after they were sold out. I got all the faces from instagram photos. I didn't want to infringe, and was going to make a webapp, but that one came out before I properly got the go ahead email.
Just seen this, appreciate the link to the android app. For some reason that link includes &hl=pt at the end, which sets the page language to Portuguese. Do you think you could remove this so that the default language is used?
i don't think this gent is a coffee professional anymore because regardless of leave him alone this has destroyed his coffee career.
"Don't harass them"
"Here's why they deserve it though"
lol.
Thanks for taking the high ground.
IP violation is not cool and is very unprofessional. I agree that the coffee on the dice is gross! Why?!?
Been watching your videos for a while and hope that I can consult you when the time comes to opening my own coffee shop.
You're right; such a blatant theft of something so incidental is really funny! I'm glad it did you no actual harm. Oh, yeah; a little funny, yet very, very tacky!
IF YOU DID IT
Ask James which charity you should send a donation to, from the profits of the dice you copied.
Hahaha I can see why it baffled you. I don't know what the quality of the dices are like but I do find the prints quite interesting. Oh well, at least he tried to do different prints rather than copied you 100%.
Angry, sad and glad. Angry that people steal the ideas of others quite so easily. Sad that I didn’t realise your dice were a short, single run and that I had so much going on I didn’t got round to ordering a set. But glad there are ways to “officially” get some pseudo-die to still mess around with aeropress recipes
App is US only - back to being sad
James Hoffmann - I’m in the UK, will keep an eye out for when it makes it into the App Store. Just had a quick look at the web version; Although nothing is quite like having a physical version, it looks nice.
James Hoffmann - thank you!
oh wow, the web app is super cool! Thank you very much!!!
I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t sell more yourself, or at least license it out. Clearly there is a demand. I found your video last month and was ready to buy.
I thought the same, but the webapp that James has pointed to is great. I haven't tried the app, but at 99p you can't complain.
Are the dice produced by Brewista?
Sue him James 😡
Hilariously, that Aeropress is also fake
Flattery in a perverted sort of way
Troll Slayed
Speaking about recipes... I wrote you a few weeks ago in FB regarding your request asking for suggestions for brewing methods. I have a pretty unique way to brew the Moka pot I would love to share. So far the feedback I have has been grand, considering is one of the most used brewing methods in some parts of Europe. Give me a line or two if your interested so I can send full details! Cheers.
I am in such agreement! Can I buy you a cup of coffee? I will be in London August 7 & 8th all the way from Lubbock, Texas.
Hi James. I just ordered your dice and subsequently saw this video stating you have none left in stock. Are they still available? BTW, I've got 7 items on Amazon counterfeiting my inventions and other products I sell. Welcome to the new world.
Every good business has to overcome someone stealing from it... it’s in human nature I guess.
I would have been very angry if i where you. Ahhh, these things bugs me!
Thanks James.
Imitation is the best form of flattery?
Well played
You’ve arrived! Being the one and only original, the bar has been set. This time it was your dice but others imitated your theme. “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” or some nonsense like that.
I'm a very recent follower of James and just a few days ago it was announced on Twitter that they were gonna be making more of the dice. So I ordered immediately and got waaay to optimistic. Got crushed as I got an email saying they will refund me as they can't ship my order to the Philippines because of the pandemic. The moment this thing blows over I hope there's still something left for me to order again.
You mention at 4:28 that if we want dice, to get in touch with you. Does that mean we could still get dice? Or are you saying if we want to start producing the dice to get in touch with you?
You can ask not to contact them about this but you cannot control our emotions..
You got class.
Aeropress not even once.
True class!
I went to download the app and i am not able to download it in Sweden... bummer.
John I was trying to find a video that suited but I wondered your thoughts on the Lyons coffee bags
very profesional, i like you
Love your Video my G. will deff buy your original dice when i open up my coffee shop
Let's be honest. It's on the third page of Google, they might as well not exist!
It's on the third page of YOUR Google... all results are personalized by your location, and your search history. By name he's obviously a Dutch guy so it may show higher than the original in Holland; or to people who've done more searches into a specific topic (say: gadgets) where James' searches are mostly into coffee.
@james hoffman i want some of your dice mate!
Love this
LEGEND BRO
Here is my two cents.
1st of all I love your videos they are helpful and your voice is soothing .
2ed have you contacted the company selling the dies? What if to his eye this was an original idea ?
Can I get some of these dice please
I feel really bad for what happened, James. Now we ask, we can we do about it.
are u the guy from the old home alone movies?
Are the genuine article available anywhere? I really want the dice 🎲
Hey James
Here's a thought. Why not make a table/spreadsheet listing the six sides of the five dice, upload it as a PDF, and everybody can play at home for free.
You're welcome.
Patents exist for a reason. If you didn't get one and released it then it becomes public domain. Or perhaps the idea can't be patented, in which case it's a free for all. Copyright on the other hand; they can't steal your copy/photos/graphics, etc.
i bought your dice as a Christmas gift :)
Pity iOS app is only available in the US, it’s so much fun ;(
Are you joking? That’s ridiculous! I’m going to check the Australian Apple Store now. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, mate.
It is obvious “roll and brew” stole your idea, but is it possible jan bought some of these, then made a video which “roll and brew” subsequently stole as well?
James Hoffmann I agree it sounds quite likely it is as you describe. I bought two sets from you, one as a gift and one for me. I quite enjoy them and it made me sad too to hear this story. 🙏🏼☕️🔥🤙🏼🌈🍯🌞
i like the video and the way of dealing but the app is unfortunately not available in Germany for ios 😞
the ios application is currently available only in US app market. would be nice to see it available across the EU.
:(
Funnily enough they didn't bother to do it in their own way, just carbon copy. It was inevitable with the demand and zero supply, but most people would put their own twist to it.
James, it is hard to see your creations and thoughts taken. That is why there are patents, trademarks and copyright. Ethics schmethics. Business is business. The value of an idea may not be worth the cost of filing then defending. And it gives others a free pass when they rip off others ideas.
Sorry. But if one is not willing to take the effort to protect what is theirs, the coyote's of the world will take it from them.
Glad you have a good view toward this though. Standing guard at the door of your mind.
Dolt.
If you didn't want this person harassed, you wouldn't post their name and photo and website and Instagram (with their general location) and....
Surely you should conduct yourself with the same honesty you're demanding of others?
im sorry to see that this is a dutch guy who's ripped off your idea =(
Shame you can’t run for POTUS
Why do you complain if you don't sell these things anymore? The copycat is the only option to get a hand on this good idea
So Chinese of them
