Im now 51yrs old and I saw the Hemisphere tour.. As I look at this masterpiece being played out from a fellow guitar player/ Fan my respect for Alex Lifeson is insurmountable.. The sound, the cords, the mood ,the style its just an absolute amazing timeless piece of music.. May god watch over the members of RUSH and guild them in all of there endeavors good and bad.. They have shown themselves as truly great human beings and deserve nothing but the best..
Starting at 3:17, the sustain and original true feel of that part really had me. I went back and watched it several times. I've played this song hundreds of times on guitar, bass and drums. Never disappoints.
Dear Mr. Guitarist; I played Rush drums for years but never really watched my guitarist's picking. We were another perfect Rush tribute band. 10:40 to 11:51 is one of the greatest transitions of their action. To see it played is divine. Thanks all for this.
Well done. Playing that masterpiece well is remarkable. Creating it is on another level. Thanks for your playing this and thank you Alex Lifeson for sharing your gift with the world.
Very good, dude. Not many people know this but Alex played this track on one of the very first Roland guitar synths. I remember reading in a guitar mag about how Alex would complain about it how every night on the road during the Hemispheres tour the thing would sometimes behave unpredictably due to... whatever... humidity, temp, voltage spike... you name it. He never used it again after that tour. Never did learn to trust it.
Bravo! I've looked at a lot of your videos in the last few days, and I'm very impressed. I've been playing Rush for years, and learned some things I've missed watching you make it look easy. Thanks for these videos.
all I can say is that I learned a lot watching you play these masterpieces. For years I dabbled with different sections of this, mostly the easier recognized, and passed myself off as "Oh yeah, I can play that shit, check this out". Watching you, just took me back to school, as my basic premise was right, but you filled in so many blanks, and that shit is too good for a guitar player to not want to seriously know.
I wasn't going to watch this, I'm really glad I did, most impressive my friend I really enjoyed your work. This really brings the genius of Alex and this great band to the fore front. What a RUSH👍☮️
@@Blobblob22 being a guitar playing Alex Lifeson fan myself it was so inspiring to watch you play this whole song. I have never undertaken such a feat myself, "Overture 2112" I think is the longest Rush tune I play. I always get very inspired watching great players so I'm glad I stumbled on to you 👍 I look forward to checking out some more of your video of stuff you're a great player! If you see this first off what is your axe? Is it a Taylor? And.... What amp/FX are you using?
@@aschule5684 Thanks, It's a Tokai 'Love Rock' guitar. I don't use an amp, I plug straight into a Boss Micro BR and get effects from that such as Chorus etc. I also use a Boss distortion pedal and Overdrive pedal.
Funny that Alex's guitar arrangement always seemed very natural to me, idk why. I guess most people do think of them as pretty crazy though, they were certainly unique for the time no matter how you look at them.
These videos are fantastic! I'm learning the tunes I've wanted to learn for years watching you. Thanks a bunch and keep up the great work and wonderful playing!
What can I say about you Blobblob22. I have been following you for about 4 years at least. you have helped me through so many rush covers that i can never thank you enough. Keep doing the work you are doing. I have never been so grateful for such a talent. I still can't get over how you rip through solo's such as cold fire and Red Barchetta. you are the best. I will always be your fan.
Alex was maybe my biggest influence as a teenager, so much so my own style melted away and I started to sound like a clone. I eventually had to stop listening to Rush for years so my own style could develop. But at one time I knew every note Alex played up to Power Windows. My point is that watching this was like watching Alex give a lesson, great job! The solo still needs work though if you want it to sound like him, but I truly enjoyed your rendition of the solo nonetheless. TY for sharing. ^_^
Very excellent version of one my favorite songs from a long time ago on a bus heading to a soccer game in my headphones.....I've always wondered how this was played...Now i see.
I have a request. You a great guitar player man. Mr. Lifeson would be proud. I request that you start doing some of their 90's stuff. Like, Roll the Bones, Counterparts, and Test for Echo.
Brilliant :) I was just about to upload my take on Hemispheres and I saw this ... and Wow it's good! I see that you play the harmonics differently to me though but I can't quite see ... could I ask how you play them? Cheers ... Doc

You've a good memory, I forgot about the acoustic version I had up in 3 or 4 parts. I have 2 different guitar cover/videos of side one of Hemispheres up now, I don't want to have too many videos of the same the song up :)
Not bad. You've got about half of it right and half wrong. though. I see too that I have some parts wrong. Kudos, I know how much work it took to figure out, I did the whole album also.
Most excellent! Not sure but I think Alex uses a double guitar with the lead licks a step up from your production. None the less, I commend you on a job well done!!
I have been chasing this sound for three decades and yours is the closest I've heard yet! I liked it so much I bought a Boss Micro BR. Can you tell me if you are using a factory preset? The closest I could find was the P34 Grinder setting. Any particular external effects pedals or are you using the internal chorus? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Great job!
cf680c2b5f I didn't use a default factory preset I modified one of the presets. I can't remember the setting exactly . I know that I used the chorus with a low rate (about 15) and nearly maximum depth. I used the JC-120 Preamp and probably either 'ms stk' speaker SIM or 'match' and got quite a clean sound.I used Boss Overdrive pedal for most parts (to add driven guitar sound) except the quite parts and I used a Boss Overdirve pedal and Boss distortion together for the solos. I connected the Boss pedals between the guitar and the BR
Thanks for the tips. I'll need to experiment with this. Do you remember if the chorus was the only FX from the BR you used? No flanger, delay, phaser, etc?
Blobblob22 It sounds good to me. I ordered a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal and a Boss SD-1 overdrive pedal this week. I'm interested in seeing if I can duplicate some of the sounds you're getting, not only on Hemispheres, but on the other Lifeson tunes as well. I think you've nailed it.
Blobblob22 I have the Boss SD-1 Overdrive pedal connected to the Micro Br now. As far as starting with a clean sound, I am using the JC-120, Vol. 80, Bass 30, Mid 50, Treb 100, Master 90 and Brightness on (too much bass drounds out the high notes on the arpeggio bar chords). On the speaker I'm using MATCH. The only FX is Chorus at Rate 15, Depth 100 and Level 100. I have the Delay set at 100ms, Feedback 55 and Level 15. Without the SD-1 at all, it's a pretty clean sound and when I add some overdrive with the SD-1 (about 50%) it kind of sounds close, but still not like yours. Any tips you can throw out here would be appreciated. I also have the Boos DS-1 Distortion pedal, but I'm presuming you are only using this for the leads and I'm just trying to get the rhythms set close for now. Oh, I forgot to add that I'm using a Gibson ES-335 with the bridge pickup only. Thanks!
I am going to learn to play this by watching your video.. I've looked at the lessons on here and they are pretty rough and incorrect. but this video sounds rite. ty Blobblob22.
