This album was such a huge influence on me as a budding musician and will always be one of my all time favorite albums of ANY band/artist and genre. (2:36 - that little bell/cymbol is the coolest thing ever!) Geddy's bass playing is so featured on this album as well. I imagine it is was very difficult to perform these songs live.
When I listen to bootlegs from that tour it sounds like they really struggled to play this song, especially Geddy. That's probably why they never played the full version of the song on any future tours and took it out of the set list for many years.

Sounds like a mono mixdown of the front channels of the 5.1 mix, leaving out the other channels !!! there are several soundbits absent (Lerxt solo almost doesn't sound at all, the trinagle at 2:36 is absent and Geddy's voice is muffled on several parts)... this was a mistake obviously, but a revealing one, there are some subtleties of Neil's playing that come across more clearly (ghost notes on the snare specially)
I noticed that too. Thought it might be my speaker, but you're right. Cool animation with the brain and all but this is too good of a song to get cheated on any sound. Thankfully, RUclips, being the beast that it is, has a couple other videos (audio only of course, searched for live version to no avail), but grateful nonetheless for uploads of this amazing masterpiece.

Has anyone ever considered this to also be a tribute to how Neil views himself in the band. Think about it Alex could be seen as the God of love and laughter and Getty like the God of thought and wisdom given their respective personalities and the black hole could represent the void from which Neil enters the band and then brings harmony to the three of them establishing their great working relationship as a band, Neil being the voyager Cygnus.

Robert Kelly I’m not sure that’s it. The guitar sounds more distorted and the bass and drums have different tones. A couple hits were shorter in duration, the drum entry on Alex’s harmonics was different, and some of the vocals were different. All in a way that I don’t think would come from something intentional

I’d expect a video of this low quality to be made by a fan with limited resources and video equipement, but from Vevo? Doesn’t make sense why they likely spent a total of 3 hours animating several brains and placing some figurines. Ever wonder why Rush doesn’t have any preexisting music videos? Because they didn’t need them. Their music contains enough imagery to paint mental pictures. That’s probably true even of their instrumentals. My point is, don’t cheap out on a second rate music video for a first rate song that doesn’t need one because you’re trying to get views. People will [hopefully] see right through it.

Cut my son's teeth (named him Alex) on this album. Literally drove around for 2 years while this CD looped. Now he's a serious guitar player who knows what great music is.
You gave him one of the greatest gifts a father could to a son. Real music by real musicians. I always cringe when I hear a parent say their kid is going to be the next pop star because they sound just like "place name of any generic pop star, since 1980 until now, here." These guys taught me that being a musician was about being unique compared to the pop music scene of their generation. Anyway, good luck to your son on his own musical journey! Cheers.

Peart is the most prolific rock lyricist of all time in my opinion. He covered so much ground on so many topics it's staggering. I've often wondered about these earlier albums if his writings were ever somewhat influenced by Canadian born mystic Manly P. Hall? Anyway, I love all the guys in RUSH. They raised me. And I'm indebted. ~●~
How can anything negative ever be said about anything this band has ever done? How many musicians has Rush influenced? This band has influenced the bands that influenced them... What have you done musically that can even compare? Think about it... This mix is SO DIFFERENT than the one normally presented! I can hear snare ghost notes I couldn’t previously, and the bottom end is HUGE, almost drowning out Alex! And I’m only 1:26 in!❤
It is my personal belief that this is the finest work Rush has ever put forth. The complexity, the musicianship, the stylistic considerations, the story- all of it. This is Rush at their peak. And what a peak it is.
Respectfully disagree. They never peaked… plateaued early and went out on top of their game.. many different styles and sounds along the way but always top tier.
So it turns out that Cygnus is Neil's DEUS EX MACHINA. His way of bringing this to a denouement. D.E.M.s tend to be a desperate resort or can be seen as cheating but makes sense that Cygnus makes this entrance right in the heat of battle.

I hate to second guess things like this, as there are a lot of directions to go here per the lyrics...but watching this, all I can think of is something Peart wrote in the Grace Under Pressure tour book: "The great people at the studio, Andre's wonderful food, and the fantastic library of movies ("The Man With Two Brains" was a big hit this time) helped to provide diversion and make us as comfortable as we could be (considering our condition!)." They played ALL of 2112, Caress of Steel, Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres!! THE WHOLE ALBUMS!! Circumstances was probably the smallest pill with the most impact. I love the long songs and their complex messages, but when Neal needed to stop writing, Circumstances sums it all up!
Geddy said that when it was mastered ( i think) that it was done at something like 33 2/3rds or some such, by accident of course, and once it was done their was no going back to fix it. So, then he had to sing it that way from then on and it was a real struggle for him.
Hemispheres is one of my favorite records of all time. The song itself is still freaking mind blowing.

Robert Kelly I’m not sure that’s it. The guitar sounds more distorted and the bass and drums have different tones. A couple hits were shorter in duration, the drum entry on Alex’s harmonics was different, and some of the vocals were different. All in a way that I don’t think would come from something intentional

I’d expect a video of this low quality to be made by a fan with limited resources and video equipement, but from Vevo? Doesn’t make sense why they likely spent a total of 3 hours animating several brains and placing some figurines. Ever wonder why Rush doesn’t have any preexisting music videos? Because they didn’t need them. Their music contains enough imagery to paint mental pictures. That’s probably true even of their instrumentals. My point is, don’t cheap out on a second rate music video for a first rate song that doesn’t need one because you’re trying to get views. People will [hopefully] see right through it.
This is one of my favorite Rush songs, but this mix is terrible. There are parts you can hardly hear Alex.

Cut my son's teeth (named him Alex) on this album. Literally drove around for 2 years while this CD looped. Now he's a serious guitar player who knows what great music is.

I always cringe when I hear a parent say their kid is going to be the next pop star because they sound just like "place name of any generic pop star, since 1980 until now, here." These guys taught me that being a musician was about being unique compared to the pop music scene of their generation. Anyway, good luck to your son on his own musical journey! Cheers.

My brother had a red vinyl version of this album.
Peart is the most prolific rock lyricist of all time in my opinion. He covered so much ground on so many topics it's staggering. I've often wondered about these earlier albums if his writings were ever somewhat influenced by Canadian born mystic Manly P. Hall? Anyway, I love all the guys in RUSH. They raised me. And I'm indebted. ~●~

What have you done musically that can even compare? Think about it... This mix is SO DIFFERENT than the one normally presented! I can hear snare ghost notes I couldn’t previously, and the bottom end is HUGE, almost drowning out Alex!

Love this album but one of Alex's solos is mixed way to low and another disappeared completely from the mix.
It is my personal belief that this is the finest work Rush has ever put forth. The complexity, the musicianship, the stylistic considerations, the story- all of it. This is Rush at their peak. And what a peak it is.
Respectfully disagree. They never peaked… plateaued early and went out on top of their game.. many different styles and sounds along the way but always top tier.
It kinda reminds me of pink Floyd. In the way it's one song right after another. Telling a story.

So it turns out that Cygnus is Neil's DEUS EX MACHINA. His way of bringing this to a denouement. D.E.M.s tend to be a desperate resort or can be seen as cheating but makes sense that Cygnus makes this entrance right in the heat of battle.

I hate to second guess things like this, as there are a lot of directions to go here per the lyrics...but watching this, all I can think of is something Peart wrote in the Grace Under Pressure tour book: "The great people at the studio, Andre's wonderful food, and the fantastic library of movies ("The Man With Two Brains" was a big hit this time) helped to provide diversion and make us as comfortable as we could be (considering our condition!)." Can't help thinking this video is very Dr. Hfuhruhurr approved... :D

I was at the best live bootleg concert in STL...!!!! I am still downloading it all and it's been how long?! I had only two albums under my belt and this was NOT one. After medicating, I literally left the building in my mind creating my wonderous and magnificent future journey. this music helps astral travel...with the right help!! They played ALL of 2112, Caress of Steel, Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres!! THE WHOLE ALBUMS!! Circumstances was probably the smallest pill with the most impact. I love the long songs and their complex messages, but when Neal needed to stop writing, Circumstances sums it all up!

Something sounds out of phase on this mix
Geddy said that when it was mastered ( i think) that it was done at something like 33 2/3rds or some such, by accident of course, and once it was done their was no going back to fix it. So, then he had to sing it that way from then on and it was a real struggle for him.
