The parents say Kyle depends on them for all his basic needs, and they claim he wants them to provide him with more money, a car, and financial help. Karen and Jim also claim Kyle has physically assaulted both of them, leaving them bruised, and Kyle has been arrested and served time behind bars on multiple occasions. Kyle says his parents are to blame for his financial situation and, as parents, should be doing more to help him get on his own two feet, instead of keeping him in the hole he says they helped put him in. My kids have known, from their high chair days, "If you make the decision to break the law ~ even a law you think is stupid or unjust ~ do not waste your one call from jail, on me. I will *not* show up." I love my kids fiercely and I put in the effort to make sure they were raised to be responsible and to take pride in their own self reliance. We do our kids a desservice when we don't allow them to resolve (age appropriate) problems on their own, deprive them of the chance to 'learn a lesson', etc.

Very true I told my kids the same thing. Do not waste your 1 call on me either cause I will not BAIL YOU OUT! If you got yourself put in jail you are going to sit there. I have taught them right from wrong it is up to them to use their own judgement to decide who and what they do with their lives once they turn 18 years old.
This is a very common story. So many people have done this to their children to the detriment of their families.
I don't mind helping, but an adult child has a time limit of 6 months to a year. No compromises. Even less if they don't do anything or cause problems.
