Very inspiring to hear that you found your connection with Scotland. Being from The Netherlands, I often regret the big emphasis on "Norse" gods and Scandinavian ancestry. Allright, Iceland has the Edda and Scandinavia the Vikings, but otherwise the Nordic religion and culture were and still are all over Europe. I grew up in a Dutch farm with suncross-windows and other pagan symbols, celebrated bonfires with Easter, etcetera. Every person with European ancestry has some pagan connection, whether Nordic, Germanic, Slavic or otherwise. Let's cherish that.
The "emphasis" is on the only sources we have, which are Norse - and even the Norse sources are sparse, so any "emphasis" on f.x. Dutch paganism would be pure guesswork, hence the "emphasis" on (mainly) Icelandic sources.
There are minor Anglo-Saxon sources from England & that one Middle Eastern guy, also & you can theoretically use what we know from England, Iceland & Scandanavia to test other practices/ stories from the German & English sphere against. Germans also did a "King of Christmas" thing & what I was able to find on that was all the aspects the Scandanavian sources were missing. You can make a connection between Modersnacht in England & Krampusnacht in Germany. German & English folklore kept alive just as many monsters & presumed Nature Spirits as the Norse did.
I agree so much with all of your points. Especially about ancestry. I’ve never felt more fulfilled than when I’m volunteering at Celtic festivals, representing my family’s Scottish Clan and honoring my ancestors. Thank you for sharing!
I love your channel. I live in the foothills of the Appalachians & my granny (whose mother was from Ireland & father was of Scottish ancestry) lived in Western NC & I spent summers with her. She was very much an Appalachian "Granny Witch" & taught me a lot about the land & nature. These mountains have always been a major part of my life & I have always felt a deep connection to them. The Appalachians are very ancient & were once part of the Pangean Mountains, when all the continents were one land mass. When the land broke off into the continents, the Pangean Mountains became the Appalachians, as well as the Scottish Highlands, the rocky regions of Scandinavia & Greenland, parts of Ireland, the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas & Oklahoma & the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. I've always felt that was why so many Scots who immigrated to the US settled in the Appalachians - because it felt like home & in a way, it was. That may also explain your connection to Scandinavia & Scotland. My granny always said "The land remembers".

When I found out the super ancient Applachian mega-range extended into Scottish highlands and Berber North Africa, and even Canada and Scandinavia...I realized: "we have always been in these hills".

We were all once neighbors. Always showing respect and gratitude to your fellow man is what I strive for and what I recommend to others. Norsemen went a Viking multiple times during their time in Midgard. Exploring and "touring" was the main focus, and learning more about their surroundings. hi scottish person here!! i think it would be interesting for you to look into the different regional practices across scotland (highland, lowland, hebridean, and the norse isles) such as oral storytelling traditions from the lowland borders, songs from the isles/hebrides, assests from different clans (ie. the fairy flag that clan MacLeod has) etc etc etc. Scotland is absolutely rife with diverse traditions across the regions, and each tradition can help you understand the history and your ancestry much much more
As someone who grew up in fife and now lives in the southern Hebrides oh my goodness the diversity is amazing and the two cultures couldn’t be more different! Would love a video on this. Happy to help with info 😊
I found your channel in beginning of December and it has been life changing. It’s helped me feel connected to my birthplace of Sweden even though I’m halfway across the world in California. Keep doing what you are doing. It’s an incredible calling. I’m so thankful for all the information you provide. I have been struggling a lot the last year and finding your channel and Freyja has helped me more than I ever thought possible. It’s given me a deeper understanding of the world. Skål. I so agree. Connecting with one’s ancestry is important. I did a DNA test years ago. I am getting ready to take another DNA test, because technology is so more advanced now. I have Celtic and Germanic ancestry. Wales, Scotland, and Austria.

I only recently found your channel when I started to doubt my Catholic Faith. You helped me alot in learning so much about Paganism and such. I used to be a Traditional Catholic who fast two times a week and was massively afraid of sin that I started to develope depressive episodes because I constantly had to hide my queerness. And December 2023 was the first month in which I started to actually break from a lot of traditional Catholic traditions like fasting two times a week etc. I still got a long way to go, but your channel helped me to do the first step. So thank you so much.

I agree, we should be focusing on uniting cultures, and sharing stories. Great example of this lately was when I saw Heilung perform their ritual songs at the Red Rock amphitheater with the local indigenous people there. They were both dancing on stage, pagans and first world nations, it brought me to tears.
Too much unifying and we lose what makes us unique

I chuckled when you talked about your first days on this path. It was much the same for me. Mine sometimes resembled a Busby Berkley production number(but solo) my first few years. Aside of the odd open full moon ritual and occasional friends' rituals, I've always been a solitary. Crone that I am now, I just cast circle, welcome Everyone, sit down, and chat until it's time to close and say farewell. Arriving at that perpetual, genuine feeling of gratitude is probably the most crucial thing I've gained over the years. It's life changing. So is embracing the healing work we all need to do. I absolutely love when you speak about ancestral unity. I believe this, too, and my focus in on spreading light and love through ancestral connection. I felt the same as you in Scotland (I went to Isle of Iona, as I have a strong ancestral connection to Druids, and that is where we think the Druid college once stood and the Druid's were converted (peacefully) to Christianity via St. Columba. I went there to celebrate my 50th birthday and to play pipes in the Graveyard of the Kings, and like you, I felt such an intense conenction. It's awesome to know that others go through this kind of transformation. Wishing you all the best in light and love.

Enjoying your videos! I'm on a similar trajectory and am documenting it on another yt channel. Anyway, I can relate to going to Scotland and feeling spiritually connected. You mentioned a painting that looked like you. When I was there with my parents, my mom pointed out a statue of a Scottish soldier and it looked almost exactly like me....yipes!

Thank you, Jacob. I truly understand your strong ancestral and spiritual connections to an area of land or specific country and its culture. I live in Maine USA. My paternal grandmother was born and raised in Sweden. The moment I touched ground on Öland, Sweden and quite specifically the area around Borgholm castle, I felt I had truly found my ancestral heritage. A strange and very uncanny feeling of comfort and belonging resonated. This same feeling repeated during my second and third visits several years apart. It validates my feelings to hear someone else speak of recognizing their ancestral home. Thank you again! 🥰

as someone who is trying to understand and and love this faith, as of the past 2 months, I have been doing a lot of reading and your videos have helped me tremendously. I want to grow in this faith ever more over the next year. And by just starting, I mean just that. I just recently bought the poetic edda and will buy the pro edda after I get done with it. I have a lot to learn, and look forward to learning more! the main advice I took from this video is to find others and find a "fellowship" if you will. Cannot wait to see what comes, as you said in the start of the video, with the "first love" portion, I have yet to have that experience, or maybe I did this morning, I have no idea what to look for. Either way I cannot wait to explore and connect with the Gods!

I got similar to the Faery House. I have an old horse barn that I walled off one section and put a bed in it. I brew mead in it and a wood burning stove. Along with basically a bed and a table. While it’s in front of a pond and a grove of 8 different trees.

I am very happy to hear you tell others! As a Swede, you don’t need to be of Scandinavian blood to honor our old Gods, our culture, our food, our people. We openly welcome others to share in the same.
You need to be European, because this is a folk faith, worshipping the gods and ancestors of out people specifically. It's not something you can "convert" to like Abrahamism, Sikhism or Buddhism.
A Nigerian or Mexican can't be Norse pagan anymore than I, a Swede, can pretend to be Haida and worship in their spirituality. And if I tried to be Haida, or Sioux or Lakota and really go all-in (as has happened with some white people), they would firmly and politely tell me to stop, and to go find my own people's spirituality, not go chasing theirs.
It's nothing hateful about this. And it's insulting to your own ancestors and culture to go chasing another people's culture. Everyone understands this when it comes to other people, it's only when it comes to whites/Europeans that we can't have things of our own.
@@Aethuviel You will find that, in fact, a lot of people can and do convert to other folk religions. There are many of those in Brazil, where I live, especially of African and Indigenous ancestry, and many people convert into and out of them all the time.

@@carsarthuas someone who grew up with Ojibwa, and lives near Menomonie and Onedia, they absolutely will not let non natives join their folk ways.
For them, these folk ways are alive. They have spirit, and Its deeply tied to their ancestors. Its deeply disrespectful to bring in foreigners
If you truly believe in the Gods, and they spoke to your people's in a certain languag, then you have a moral duty to speak that languagein return.
So, Inclusion is deeply disrespectful on two very important fronts.
Very much appreciate this video, and thankful for this channel, helped me take my practices further and had me dive deep into ancestry to find I actually have Scandinavian heritage and would of not dug that deep if it wasn't for this channel. So thank you 🙏 ❤. Have a healthy and great year to come.

I've thought on a lot of things pver the last couple years and have determined it's not my place to judge people, especially without knowing all the information. It's not healthy nor does it bring people together and don't we have enough judgment and disharmony in the world as it is? I'm looking forward to seeing where your journey takes you this year!
This video was in fact helpful. I’ve been on a spiritual journey myself for quite some time now. Reflecting on a lot of things that I hold important and learning how to get rid of the things that are not important. Trying to hold the present moments in a much better light than material goods, because simply having a lot of things will not bring you happiness no matter how much you tell yourself you’ll be happier if you have it. Happiness to me is finding connection, peace, community, and sharing good times. All of which has brought me closer to finding happiness in this community of people. I’m always excited to learn and hear what brings others happiness and how different they live their life, even if we are going the same direction. The world is beautiful, we just have to know where to look.

Ecuador is the one country I’ve been to and it is truly a magical place. I didn’t get to see a lot of the touristy things. This was 11 years ago when I was still following a Christian faith. I didn’t even understand the concept of feeling earthy energy because everything we were taught of that nature came directly from god. You have to visit the equator. I honestly don’t even know exactly where I was because it was a long time ago and I was with a group so I wasn’t the one to pay attention to where we were going but it was one of the most intense energies I have ever felt. Like you can feel the difference in a matter of feet from the exact marking of the equator. They did a lot of cool demonstrations of objects interacting with the magnetic fields and physics and stuff. I’m not good at explaining it. But you definitely have to experience that. And it’s funny looking back because we were there with the church to do missionary work but the most memorable experience for me of the whole trip was that day at the equator and walking through the exhibits of their ancient culture and burial grounds. And it was the first time I felt power not only from the earth itself in a way that I could not deny. But also from another culture that I knew next to nothing about at the time. I’m surprised they let us go honestly and probably wouldn’t have allowed it had they known where I would end up spiritually in 11 years. 😅 I would love to return someday so that I can get the full experience that I wish I could have the first time around.
Thank you for being aware of the issue of racism within so much if the Norse & Celtic paganism. I am very cautious to subscribe to only those who are clearly & openly anti-racist & inclusive of all. I do very much agree with your points. If we look back, racism is a very modern concept. Paganism historically was open to all. There were closed practices that gave people the feeling of exclusivity, but they didn't have the concept of racism & probably focused more on classes/social status if anything particular. Most religions & practices were very welcoming & open to all historically.
The Norse pantheon were worshiped outside the Scandinavian region as well. In fact that is where we get several of our weekday names from. As well as a couple names from Rome (Saturday namely).
i started watching about 2 years ago...i found you in germany while i was looking for paganism...this channel is full of great history and information but i found watching your journey to find your path was just as important...getting to know you through your sharing helped me to feel a connection with humanity again...your optimism about community and humanity helps balance my natural pessimistic bend ;) so thank you...happy new year to you and i look forward to continuing the saga ;)

Yes!!!! I believe our diet directly affects our spirituality ! I think it's one reason why so many have not had spiritual experiences and awakening...herbs are so important...for example, gypsyweed is said to help open your pineal gland! After drinking and eating this plant plus others, I have so much more spiritual awareness of every little thing ... especially here on my 55 acres in rural Alabama. Herbs should be added to a diet of real food ..meaning produce , eggs,lean meat...forget all the rest of the garbage in the American diet. My father's ancestors are Scottish too..the Mackenzie clan. I never even knew any of my ancestry except my Cherokee grandfather on my mom's side ..until my 40s , 50s...I found out I have Scandinavian viking ancestors too..as well as a lot of German....not knowing my ancestry,i was lost many years..so yes, knowing where you come from is also super valuable. ❤

I only wish I knew where my ancestors from. That conversation NEVER took place throught my entire life, so I have no idea what country or countries I originated. I only know I resonate deeply with Norway, Scotland, and Ireland. Don't know why, just do. Sooooo....who the hell knows what I am so I just feel and listen to videos such as this and enjoy them.

I'm a 51 year old Pagan went through my hating Christians now i just want to learn and tell people about our gods and goddesses. I don't hate on people that learned about the gods from media even if that's how they learn at first peak intrest then hopefully they also have the desire to learn more
I truly understand the need to slow down. I often compare myself to a small hedgehog exploring the world around me. I, over the last few months have slowed down a lot. I've been inspired by your journey and one day hope to make it to a gathering.
My ancestry DNA is 60% Lithuanian and the rest Polish which did not surprise me. My family was Christian but remember my Lithuanian grandmother saying never kill spiders in the house and snakes are lucky and ok to bring into the house. Now I understand some of her beliefs/customs were Pagan. I am starting my journey to learn more and return to Pagan views and beliefs. Back to respecting and being humbled by our natural world. I am seeing Heilung this year at Red Rocks. Would love to travel to Lithuanian soon
I'm at the ancestors part and I wanted to say quickly: you feeling that kind of connection to Scotland is maybe not just due to ancestors but possibly past lives as well. I have a family tree that goes back 1000 years, in Hamburg, Germany, and I've moved to the UK when I was 20 and when I go to Devon or Sommerset or Scotland, I feel at home. It's that immediate, strong feeling of belonging that brongs tears into my eyes with how strong the emotions are. But I don't think I have British ancestors, I just have a calling to be on this little island. Over 50% of the family on my mum's side has moved over to Canada, and I think it was just time for us to spread our wings and explore other parts of the world, as a family. Great video so far!

I really appreciate you tackling the difficult conversations, such as cultural appropriation. I think it's tricky to sort everything out in the British Isles, with all the invaders and settlers. I am of Irish, English, and Scottish decent. I am a mystic. I am not pagan or christian. I don't need retreats. I am destined to be a shaman or the wise woman in the woods. I am 53 years old so I have a couple of decades to go. I was bitten by a rattlesnake when I was 16 years old and I got no treatment and it was during the aftermath was the spiritual learning. My father always told me that we are our ancestors immortality. We are the sum of them. They are us. We are them. I have lived in the Ouachita mountains all of my life. My family has lived here for 200 years. So how long does it have to be for them to be ancestors. I like to connect to the Celts and the great tree. I have seen it many times and all of the women who dance and sing there.
I’m excited for you to experience South America, it’s incredible, I want to go back and visit again. I would love it if one day there was a FoNT gathering in Brazil

The gods of Scotland are sadly largely unknown. I definitely had a relationship with the land itself which I would consider almost god like. It’s something. I can feel even now as I am away from it.
We will probably never know the names of Scottish gods. But we can feel them

The opportunity of a lifetime to meet a man I’ve followed since the beginning! I’m an American and I was there in Edinburgh too that day! Wish I had seen you. I’m on a similar path at the moment. My journey is taking me to Italy here in a few months and then from there I’m not sure. Peru and Bolivia are a goal though because I want to connect with the shamans there and learn from them, and they’re apparently willing to share! I speak Spanish, so if you’re looking for a buddy or a translator, I would be honored to travel with you, sir!
