I’m so glad you talked about house spirits! They do not get the credit they are due. They are an important part of my daily practice. I honor them daily and keep a spot on my altar, along with my ancestors, guides, and Goddess, so they know how important they are to me. Too many experiences for me not to give daily acknowledgement to them.

I have a candle dedicated to them that I light often and an offering bowl where I give anything from flowers to candy occasionally. Daily, I light incense for them and verbally communicate my thanks for their protection and aid.

Thank you so much for this amazing video! I am from Finland and lived my childhood in the late 80's and 90's and my parents passed much of their knowledge of finnish pagan traditions to me and one was honouring our house spirits. Nisse is called Tonttu in finnish. I remember many times we would take food for the Tonttu who we believed lived in our Sauna which was common since not all houses have a fire place so a sauna would be the "heart" of the house. Days that included some sort of celebration wether it be either of my parents getting a raise at work or me finishing a grade at school or days like the new years eve the Tonttu was always remembered too and something was left for him in the sauna. I remember vaguely one christmas when I was maybe 4-5 years old being uppset that we didn't bring the Tonttu any gingerbread cookies so later that day before I went to bed my mom gave me a few cookies to leave the Tonttu. One of the best momeries I have from childhood :) Excuse my english!
I have always felt like there was a little something "extra" about a house and home and that is why vacant houses seem to decay faster than occupied ones. House spirits are a good way to describe it! I remember as a child, crying because I was afraid we would move and I loved the house and the "extra" I didn't have words for (My parents still own the house and live there...I visited yesterday 😁). I frequently talk to my house. I always have, even when I had no idea what Paganism was. It just felt right. When we sold the first home we owned, I thanked the house, let it know what was going on, and asked it to care for and protect the new people, just as it had done for us. I introduced myself to the new to me house and asked it to accept us as it's new people and promised to care for it and asked it to care for me. It just felt natural.
I can relate. When a child my parents moved from our home to another. I remember such a deep feeling of sadness that I visited each room and said goodbye, I was 9 maybe 10 at the time. We had moved to a larger house and instantly I sensed unease regards the back bedroom and hated every night I had to sleep there. It was around that time I developed a fear of open cupboard doors and hated my feet dangling over the bed afraid of what lurked in the darkness under it. For nearly a year after we moved in cats gathered outside the window and howled, it was honestly scary, they never showed up during the day. That house had something weird about it, is all I can say.
@jessiewilliams6561 That second house does sound weird. We bought our current home last year, and I felt happy and at ease here right away. So I should probably do a little offering and remind the house spirit that I love it here, and I am grateful for the shelter and feeling of safety.

There is/was actually a pretty popular TV-Show for kids in germany dedicated to Kobolds (a Kobold) called Pumuckl, which pretty much pictures kobolds exactly for what they are 😀
Pagan witchy suburban housewife here. Once, I started to tend to a kitchen altar and leave offerings for our home’s spirit there, chores seems to go smoother and I have more cheerful disposition about cooking and cleaning. It could be that honoring our home keeps my mind on the gratitude of our possessions and our shelter or maybe the house spirits feel honored and the energy in our home has been upgraded. Ukrainian folk witch here :> there's a variant of the Domovyk or Domovoy tradition where some carry an ember from the old hearth or fireplace into the new one, or ritually transport a broom from the old house to the new one, to transport our Domovyky from one house to another :> some of us believe that the Domovyk is a variant of an ancestor, and thus the spirit is attached to the family rather than the specific dwelling
I loved this video! If my boyfriend wasn't so ocd about being tidy, I'd create a small space somewhere as well 😁 (it's a very small house, no extra rooms or wall spaces) I might have to go and find a secret space in the wardrobe or something instead! Keep making those amazing studies 😁
I work in the food industry as well as a Baker and a Chef. I leave fresh herbs in hidden spots then gather them and place them at a huge tree behind my building. I really appreciate the information in this video as well as seeing your home and how you set things up. I was watching this while prepping for the day and then the ending came up. It's incredibly important to start conversations like these--and I hope more and more content creators choose to do so. How we live as Pagans matters so much! I'm a berber from north Algeria , and also here we believe in house spirits who like like guardians of our houses when we're outside from evil spirits , and we when our ancestors built our houses they always made the doors shorter than the average height of a man so everytime someone gets inside the house he inclinates as a sign of respect for the spirits

I used to carry a doll around with me like a baby when I was little. I get sentimental about the folk stories. Fun to have practice to go along with them.

I remember as a kid being scared of the laughter in the walls, the sound of running in the halls, the sounds of people talking )specifically two old ladies). My mother would tell me that houses have memories and these memories echo through the house, that all old houses have these memories and that they’re nothing to be scared of. I doubt she remembers. After that I would sit and listen to these memories, I have vivid memories of seeing two old ladies in the hall chatting while they knit, a memory of a little boy running through the hall laughing while playing with his toy, i remember hearing this. I was so sad to leave the house because I’ve grown to love listening to it’s memories. I feel as if there is a spirit in eveything, even before I discovered the term. I would treat everything like it had a spirit (except my phone, I abuse this thing so much, even physically and verbally. It works 10/10).

Very nice to see this topic brought up! I have been thinking and feeling lately that too much emphasis is put on the gods. If we look around at unbroken traditions of polytheism and animism around the world today, in tribal cultures, A LOT of it is on "spirits" of the home, of the forest, of animals. I'm not any kind of expert, not even an armchair expert, but I think the common folk, like you and I, put more emphasis on the animistic part, while the theistic (god) part is "later", or of the more organized religion-part that comes in more organized societies. If that phrasing makes any sense.
As someone who grew up partially in Sweden, I learned about a lot of these in children’s books and stories around holidays. It’s still a part of the culture today. My mom always blames the elves for stealing our socks 😂 after 20 years they are kinda mad and now we only have one of each sock. No joke.

I have a small Nisse statue (with a red beard like mine haha) and leave it a small token/ offering alongside the rest to the Aesir and Vanir, haven't lost any socks so far hahaha!! Skal!
This made my heart so happy. I have some fun spirits in my home and they borrow items randomly and then bring them back usually. My step daughter used to leave water out for them each night.

Great video and good to hear about all the different house spirits that people have honoured and still are doing all over the world. Growing up in the north of England in the 1960's a lot of old folk would talk about "leaving a bit of summat (something) for the Dobby of the house". No doubt this is where JK Rowling got the name for Dobby's character in Harry Potter. I also remember seeing some houses and old cottages with iron horse shoes above the door, I was told as a child they were for the fairies to swing on, but I understand iron is toxic to the fey, so it was obviously to keep them out of the home. By the 1980's a lot of all these old traditions of horse shoes and honouring the Dobby of the house seemed to have died out, when I returned to Yorkshire to visit friends I only saw the occasional horse shoe above the door and that was mostly in rural areas. I have a house spirit. I call him Nord. He probably has another name known only to him. He is honored in all major ceremonies and many minor ones. and I hope he lends a hand in keeping things running around here.
Lately there’s been a huge change in energy in my apartment. I’m going through a divorce and my ex husband left and so did his father. They were both very toxic. I don’t feel scared by these “energies” or spirits. But I’m working through a lot of laundry and de cluttering. I want to cleanse my alter space.. My father in law put his phone on top of my offering plate for Freya. 😱 I immediately picked up his phone and said please don’t put anything on this area! He got mad at me… So I’m super happy they’re not here anymore and I can have my space the way I want it.
thank you for this video. i did a study on these house spirits a while back having a forest nearby and a newish home really wanted to honour the house spirits. i did it in my own way. I also have been attracted to these spirits since my child hood. and often played with these little people as my friends in the garden giving them little things - there must have been something behind that play as for many years I have reaped good things.

I appreciate your videos and the time and energy you put into research. I'm glad you touched on some differences between house deities and house spirits. I'd like to share some distinctions from my own experience. House deities can include deities of the hearth and similar archetypes. Many polytheistic cultures have a deity or two associated with the home in a general sense. House deities can also indicate a deity or two or three that those in a particular household venerate. This concept can also be understood as household deities or family deities. Some cultures have family guardian spirits in this sense rather than deities. House spirits are, like you say, spirits that inhabit our homes, like elves, gnomes, Nisse, brownies... There are many kinds described in many ways. However, the house (or any building) itself also has a spirit. This House Spirit is also understood in many ways, but rather than being a spirit inhabiting a space, it is the spirit of the space itself. Some may prefer to describe this as a house deity, in the sense of place deities like a deity of a specific river or mountain. You talk a bit about a piece of the hearth or a central pole being taken from one home to establish a new home elsewhere. Such a practice could bring the House Spirit with the family, continuing the relationship with the same spirit. I personally prefer to keep a working altar (altar space for actively working magic), an altar honoring the ancestors, an altar honoring the House Spirit (the spirit of my house), as well as separate altars for "indoor fae" and "outdoor fae" (the spirits that inhabit my house along with me, and the spirits that live in my yard and other immediate surrounding areas).
Great video and a good reminder to me that I have been ignoring our house spirit, Seamus. I leave pomanders (oranges studded w cloves) They smell wonderful and as they age they just shrivel and get very hard. Never had one spoil and I have some that are over 20 yrs old. You can also use apples - just have to use more cloves to get them from turning bad.
Finally!!! A useful video. I've watched quite a few of your videos. I have to say, this one has been the most helpful. It's interesting, & great fun to learn about the mighty people of the past. To learn about spears, ships & shields. BUT, I'm not that person. I will never have a poem, song, or story written about me. So I hunger for the day to day activities & beliefs of the common, every day working people. How their beliefs affected & described their every day activities. Baking bread, cutting fire wood, gathering eggs. Just the every day things the "No Body Family" did to keep their homes running. And how their beliefs intertwined with those activities. I'm a single, male Pagan. Looking for "Historically accurate" ways to blend my beliefs into my daily activities. In a way that Honors The Goddess & God. House Spirits seem a wonderful way to show my respect to the Realms of The Gods.

All of this was very cozy to listen to with rain pouring and hot tea. Most especially hearing other people talk about Nisse. Many many stories about Nisse in my house as a kid. I used to carry a doll around with me like a baby when I was little. I get sentimental about the folk stories. Fun to have practice to go along with them.

I remember as a kid being scared of the laughter in the walls, the sound of running in the halls, the sounds of people talking )specifically two old ladies). My mother would tell me that houses have memories and these memories echo through the house, that all old houses have these memories and that they’re nothing to be scared of. I doubt she remembers. After that I would sit and listen to these memories, I have vivid memories of seeing two old ladies in the hall chatting while they knit, a memory of a little boy running through the hall laughing while playing with his toy, i remember hearing this. I was so sad to leave the house because I’ve grown to love listening to it’s memories.
I feel as if there is a spirit in eveything, even before I discovered the term. I would treat everything like it had a spirit (except my phone, I abuse this thing so much, even physically and verbally. It works 10/10).

Very nice to see this topic brought up! I have been thinking and feeling lately that too much emphasis is put on the gods. If we look around at unbroken traditions of polytheism and animism around the world today, in tribal cultures, A LOT of it is on "spirits" of the home, of the forest, of animals. I'm not any kind of expert, not even an armchair expert, but I think the common folk, like you and I, put more emphasis on the animistic part, while the theistic (god) part is "later", or of the more organized religion-part that comes in more organized societies. If that phrasing makes any sense.

As someone who grew up partially in Sweden, I learned about a lot of these in children’s books and stories around holidays. It’s still a part of the culture today. My mom always blames the elves for stealing our socks 😂 after 20 years they are kinda mad and now we only have one of each sock. No joke.

Great video and good to hear about all the different house spirits that people have honoured and still are doing all over the world.
Growing up in the north of England in the 1960's a lot of old folk would talk about "leaving a bit of summat (something) for the Dobby of the house". No doubt this is where JK Rowling got the name for Dobby's character in Harry Potter.
I also remember seeing some houses and old cottages with iron horse shoes above the door, I was told as a child they were for the fairies to swing on, but I understand iron is toxic to the fey, so it was obviously to keep them out of the home. By the 1980's a lot of all these old traditions of horse shoes and honouring the Dobby of the house seemed to have died out, when I returned to Yorkshire to visit friends I only saw the occasional horse shoe above the door and that was mostly in rural areas. Sad really.

I have a house spirit. I call him Nord. He probably has another name known only to him. He is honored in all major ceremonies and many minor ones. and I hope he lends a hand in keeping things running around here.
Lately there’s been a huge change in energy in my apartment. I’m going through a divorce and my ex husband left and so did his father. They were both very toxic. I don’t feel scared by these “energies” or spirits. But I’m working through a lot of laundry and de cluttering. I want to cleanse my alter space..
My father in law put his phone on top of my offering plate for Freya. 😱 I immediately picked up his phone and said please don’t put anything on this area! He got mad at me… So I’m super happy they’re not here anymore and I can have my space the way I want it.

thank you for this video. i did a study on these house spirits a while back having a forest nearby and a newish home really wanted to honour the house spirits. i did it in my own way. I also have been attracted to these spirits since my child hood. and often played with these little people as my friends in the garden giving them little things - there must have been something behind that play as for many years I have reaped good things.

I appreciate your videos and the time and energy you put into research. I'm glad you touched on some differences between house deities and house spirits. I'd like to share some distinctions from my own experience.
House deities can include deities of the hearth and similar archetypes. Many polytheistic cultures have a deity or two associated with the home in a general sense. House deities can also indicate a deity or two or three that those in a particular household venerate. This concept can also be understood as household deities or family deities. Some cultures have family guardian spirits in this sense rather than deities.
House spirits are, like you say, spirits that inhabit our homes, like elves, gnomes, Nisse, brownies... There are many kinds described in many ways. However, the house (or any building) itself also has a spirit. This House Spirit is also understood in many ways, but rather than being a spirit inhabiting a space, it is the spirit of the space itself. Some may prefer to describe this as a house deity, in the sense of place deities like a deity of a specific river or mountain.
You talk a bit about a piece of the hearth or a central pole being taken from one home to establish a new home elsewhere. Such a practice could bring the House Spirit with the family, continuing the relationship with the same spirit.
I personally prefer to keep a working altar (altar space for actively working magic), an altar honoring the ancestors, an altar honoring the House Spirit (the spirit of my house), as well as separate altars for "indoor fae" and "outdoor fae" (the spirits that inhabit my house along with me, and the spirits that live in my yard and other immediate surrounding areas).
Great video and a good reminder to me that I have been ignoring our house spirit, Seamus. I leave pomanders (oranges studded w cloves) They smell wonderful and as they age they just shrivel and get very hard. Never had one spoil and I have some that are over 20 yrs old. You can also use apples - just have to use more cloves to get them from turning bad.

I'm a single, male Pagan. Looking for "Historically accurate" ways to blend my beliefs into my daily activities. In a way that Honors The Goddess & God.
House Spirits seem a wonderful way to show my respect to the Realms of The Gods.
