They don't use it cause that's how the car is setup, it's not a comp car so they need to do shallow entries cause it doesn't have high hp. They need to maintain speed and do less angle. If this was a comp car with high hp and a very aggressive steering angle, handbrake makes it easier to consistently enter a corner. There's no gatekeeping in drifting about handbrake usage.

for those of us in the states who are unable to get their mitts onna driveable AE86 of any sort, how would you compare the 86 to say an MX-5 Miata? Or are there any other more US-common cars that you'd compare to an AE86?

Any cheap budget car is good for long live drift. AE86 was cheap car 20 years ago
E36 compact 4 cylinder 140hp might be the closest you can get for cheap mx5 doesn't have hatch in the rear
Ben, as a 86 owner I would say the Miata would be as close as you can get. Get a good bucket seat, a good 1.5 or 2 way lsd, and maybe some coilovers and you’ll have the time of your life.
