  • Rachel Hollis, author of Girl Wash Your Face and Girl Stop apologizing has given her fair share of bad advice over the years. We take a look at an interview she gave to a motivational RUclips channel and it reveals a lot. Maybe Rachel Hollis is just a victim of bad advice herself...

    I am really bothered by Rachel's idea that if people don't love her, she'll just love them enough for both of them. This is toxic relationship behavior. You can have love for someone from afar, if you wish. It isn't necessary or healthy to believe that if you just love someone twice as hard, they'll love you back. You can love someone from afar, without living in toxicity.

    • @daysebatista
      @daysebatista 3 года назад +5

      YES. This is what I say in my comment. Love yourself, don't allow other people to bask in your love for "free", loving them twice as much. This is just what narcissists and ungrateful and self-entitled people want; don't give them MORE love, MORE of what they want. You can love them, but you can also love yourself enough to save yourself from being just a fool.

    The biggest issue I have with mindsets like Rachel Hollis’, the law of attraction, and so on: it’s the toxic positivity and how it doesn’t allow for privilege, etc. …So if you aren’t succeeding, it’s your fault for not being “positive” enough.
    It also ignores barriers like being from a marginalised group, having an illness/disability, and other intersecting areas of life. It’s really damaging for those who are neurodivergent or chronically ill; there’s only so much you can do, the rest is genetics and brain wiring and stuff!
    I can be super positive and believe I’m healthy 24/7, but it won’t cure me, or get rid of my ASD. (Although I’d give anything to be healthy and have a normal life!)

    • @KeyasWorld
      @KeyasWorld  3 года назад +10

      I plan to do a video on “The Secret” which talks about this exact thing...when I read it like 10 years ago I kept thinking how can you say you bring on illness through your thoughts when little babies and children get sick...it doesn’t make sense. Positive thoughts are great but I think it’s been taken and reconstructed into a way to sell stuff.

    The thing about wanting to "get to the top of the mountain" is that, if you're this insufferable, you're going to be at the top of the mountain all by yourself, with no easy way down. Considering she said she does not want to be relatable despite making a career out of it. She's there by herself.
    It's like building a house with no windows or doors while you're still inside the house. it's real fancy but kind of pointless if you're stuck there for all eternity by yourself because you've alienated everyone else around you..

      @curiousmd4473 3 года назад +5

      @@lemsip207 You are so right! It is hard physical work and running/working a farm is a 24/7 job. As my father would say” the cows and hogs are not going to feed themselves” Plus there are fields that must be rotated, prepared, planted, fertilized, picked etc and many barn chores such as cleaning out the animal pens and moving hay bails around. I forgot to mention that we did these chores before and after school during the school year. So tons of unending hard work. The only time a farmer might get rich is if his farm is on the outskirts of a big city that expands and eventually developers buy the land up. But that is not the case for most farmers and it is a very physically demanding and time consuming occupation with not a lot of financial reward.

    I really enjoyed this discussion, it helped clarify why I have such icky feelings on this mostly white influencer/self-help community. They are so caught up in what society tells us we're supposed to be to be successful (thin, fit, kale-eating, doing yoga on a pier by the mountains, designer sneakers, curated instagram posts with multi paragraph captions) and spending all your time and energy hustling to get it that they don't even pause to wonder if that's what they really want or who they are. It is upsetting so many people look up to them and want to model this mindset.

She doesn't care about actually being or doing those things. She simply wants to be Oprah. But, we already have Oprah. We don't need two. We need someone new that brings new things to the table. She clearly has self image issues and low confidence.

Rachel is correct about some of the dynamics we as women face, but she has proven to exploit, abuse trust, plagiarize, and be a fraud. Her business practices have hurt women, not “rise” them up. She is an anti-advocate. Her business of exploitation has contributed to some women struggling more and longer than they to. The thousands that she had women invest in her businesses and MLM’s could have been invested in a dependable car, education, health care, therapy and even their own small businesses.. she is a DB!

    On the manifesting thing - I feel like people, especially these influencer, self help type people tend to focus on the tangible as it can be seen and proven to others easily which might make them feel more like they have achieved something, or more importantly that others can see that they have achieved something. Intangible goals such as fulfilment are harder to prove or show to others as a personal success as opposed to something tangible like money or weight loss as you mentioned. It sometimes feels less about what they as a person are doing to improve themselves but instead what they are doing to show others how good they are and to get the validation from others that they are succeeding.

    "I'm gonna love so hard..." - that I'll hurt myself each and every time, but I'll keep going. Yeah. Right. You know what? I recently stopped all the drama I'd been living with when I decided that although I love some people, their reciprocity is no longer required, BUT I'll stop trying to seek their love and I will love MYSELF more and stop being a fool.

    Your channel is great. I have been interested in the opium of platitude vortices for some time now and Hollis (along with other positivity experts) are a symptom of the larger issue. Reaching out for help or for a form of therapy is absolutely fine and people should (when necessary) avail themselves of help. The problem here is not in the seeking help. It's that too many people hear noted quote plagiarist Hollis talk about authenticity and don't see the problem. Credulity is OK.

    Well done, she definitely needs to do some inner child work and heal from within. I hope she can heal and learn to reparent herself and let go of the resentment and maybe be an example instead of bleeding all of those who didn’t hurt her. There are so many of us who have inner child wounds and carry that burden of “be seen and not heard” and there’s a much better way she could have used her platform in the past.. I hope she uses this as a turning point to do good for those of us and ACTUALLY can relate .. my heart hurts for Rachel.. it all starts with healing the inner child.: her family life as a kid doesn’t sound great but she has a chance to do so much and stop resenting it !

    Just wanted to chime in, the idea of writing down the result instead of the goal could actually be a great way to decouple "working out" from body size. Going to the gym to be able to do a pull up rather than lose weight is a much better approach to fitness.
    I just see the working out to "not be fat" thing around so much and it makes me sad.

    I'm convinced that Rachel Hollis is a hard worker and has busted her ass. Great! HOWEVER, what she refuses to acknowledge that is so infuriating, is that one thing that absolutely, 100% "worked for" Rachel Hollis was that when she shared that post that went "viral," that was a lot of luck. When she was able to work on her books and business because her husband was RICH. When she was able to take time to "hustle" because their bills were paid and they had influential/rich/famous connections. I know that women like Rachel don't want to acknowledge privilege, but she had PRIVILEGE. I could get up at 4 fucking AM every day of my life, and HUSTLE ALL DAY, and still not be a nationally recognized author and speaker for years, if ever. There is privilege and luck swirling all around her and she acts like anyone who "wakes up at 4 AM like I did" can be a raving success. (Then she makes her famous "What makes you think I want to be relevant" video and we wonder what the hell she's ever even talking about. Do you want others to be "awesome and successful" like you or don't you?) She may have climbed to the top of some ladder and made a bunch of money, but she's not smart and she doesn't know any huge secret. Sorry.

    Her version of what u should put in writing is crazy! Imo the only things worth writing in ur diary are ‘what I appreciate today list’ , affirmations - But only being Real 💯 no BS! & a ‘to do list’ - where if u Don’t manage to tick everything off - that’s OK! Don’t beat Yr self up! Life ‘happens’ things get in the way, unexpected things happen etc etc. goals are good but if u don’t get there today, that’s OK, Yr only human! Never beat Yr self up 4 it! Her way is just SAD!🤣 Don’t do it!! B kind to Yr self:) 😊😊☀️☀️❤️❤️💚💙💜☮️

    Rachel thinks women's biggest issue is what will people think of her because she herself is so extremely superficial. When the real barrier is usually socioeconomic factors. Plenty of women with the resources who want to run marathons do. Single moms working 2 jobs who want to run marathons don't care what people think. They just don't have the resources. God her blindness to her privilege is so exhausting and her superficial attitude is infuriating.

    I think I slightly disagree with the “you shouldn’t have to remind yourself everyday” while I do think Rachel is probably a narcissist and just wants to look good to other people, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with writing down goals to be a better wife & mother. I think a lot of people get lazy and take the most important people in their life for granted. I want to spend more time with my kids and that means I need to get my crap done and make sure I read them a book early bc if I wait too long bc I’m being lazy and watching RUclips videos I’ll get tired and not want to do it. However I don’t really write that stuff down but a lot of times I do schedule little things in so that I can be a better mom or a happier less stressed mom.

    If you're looking for therapy, contact your doctor and ask for a referral to a therapist in your network, you should only have to pay your copay for the sessions, not the out of pocket price. (This price/info can vary depending on insurance. Call your insurance company to see what is covered or what the copay would be )
    Good luck to you and I'm sending good vibes for your healing and growth!

      I have Kaiser, for example. I got a referral to a therapist that is not a Kaiser doc, but works in the Kaiser network. I pay $25 a session instead of the $200/session it would be out of pocket.

    -How is is NOT obvious that Rachel's whole brand on working hard and climbing the mountain and achieving are what you should want to do in life is based on the fact that, when she was a kid, if she didn't achieve, she was nothing? That's SO obvious. Her motivations are rooted in feeling like her worth was tied to her physical achievements and social standing. And she even identifies that as a problem that her parents made them all feel. And it seems like she's made the connection that she's transferred this internalization to her adult life...but she doesn't transfer the idea that it's problematic? Like, for everyone else, it's healthy. She's basically doing what her dad did to herself all those years ago to the masses. And then telling them that if they want to stop and take a break (her rant on "it's OK if all you did today was breathe"), it's BS and someone should call you out on being lazy. I am speculating, but I am sure the little Rachel Hollis probably, at some point, wanted to pause and breathe one day and not have to achieve to get attention. And someone made her feel like that wasn't acceptable.
    Women have always been told to work ourselves to the bone as a mother and wife, not as a person. But she's swung the pendulum the other way: work to be independent and you... but work yourself to the bone to prove yourself and make something of yourself. It's a dichotomy that does nothing but leave women exhausted and unfulfilled emotionally.
    TLDR: Fuck her. This woman has no personal insight, and so you can't trust her to provide any quality insight for your own life.

    No! No! No! Rach is doing the humble brag SO SHE IS RELATABLE. Rach, at least on that day, wants everyone to think she is on the same journey as everyone. (With the notable exception of ex hubby Dave. Clearly Rach doesn't sail ..) And then subtly introduces Neural Linguistic Programming? The Tony Robbins Effect..
