I clean residential homes for a living. I love it, I help people come home to a calm, stress free environment. My job does involve cleaning bathrooms but if a client (who I have a personal and professional relationship with) referred to me as “the lady who cleans the toilets”…yeah I’m out. Disgusting.

I don't think Rachel realizes that the way she spoke about her cleaner is degrading to blue collar "unskilled" workers generally, who already don't get much respect or recognition in society. The woman she hired is a professional. Cleaning houses may not always be the most glamorous job, but housekeepers provide an important service. I've worked as a housekeeper in hotels, and it's HARD WORK. It's a physically demanding job and there is more knowledge and skill involved than you think. There is a great deal of professionalism required.
So when Rachel characterizes someone like that as "this sweet woman who cleans my toilets", it's insulting to all blue collar laborers. It makes this professional woman sound like some bumbling nitwit with a heart of gold, almost like she takes pity on her or is doing her a favour by letting her clean the toilets (reducing the scope of her work to the grossest parts of the job).
It promotes the myth of "unskilled labour" which is used to justify poverty wages. Cleaners, gardeners, restaurant employees, retail employees, customer service workers, etc; are all professionals who work hard, are skilled, and get not enough respect or compensation.
Her thoughtless comments were degrading to workers generally. It has nothing to do with her hiring a housekeeper.

Not to mention the professionalism and discretion that you have to conduct yourself with when you are working in clients' homes. I couldn't imagine talking about the success I have had in my life and career so far without talking about how the support, money, and encouragement of my parents, friends, and other people in my life have been essentially THE thing that has gotten me where I am. I have student debt from grad school, but my parents paid for my undergraduate degree. Just the fact that my parents constantly encouraged my hobbies and talents as a kid is a HUGE part of what I was capable of. Sure, I've also worked hard, I've always studied hard, but that wouldn't have been possible without the money and support of other people. People can still appreciate your success even if you talk about receiving support from others. It also makes it clear that someone understands how privilege factors into their life and their success, and understand the gravity of it.

I'm really glad you're not entitled and you're grateful to the people who have helped you have your own success.... I have so much to thank so many people for in the best part of me being possible.... It means more to me with every year and I see the way younger people seem to be so cynical and bitter even resentful that they have to move back home with the parents after college because the economy is crap etc... Doesn't sound very appreciative of the parents. Where did they plan to go if the parents said get lost, and told them to pull their own weight.

@@RadioPsychicAstrologyByPepper I'm a younger millennial. I'm glad you're able to feel that gratitude for the people in your life etc. I really feel like like so many people want to talk about "privilege" and whatnot for the performance if it, but the same people don't want to genuinely think about how supportive people etc in ones life can make the entire difference. Like you said, if I were to have something bad happen to me, my family wouldn't let me be homeless. That's a huge safety net. People make a ton of money off of telling people to "work really hard" though because it's much more difficult to be like "have a supportive family and friends and people who are willing to back you up and help you out and introduce you to people who can put you in the right place at the right time and pass opportunities your way."

It would've been interesting if they were true to "this isn't a safe space" thing. If they actually pushed those questions rather than the woman defending rachel and making excuses for her. Seems like whenever someone says "this isn't a safe space" it's the complete opposite and they are the ones needing a safe space the most.

It “never occurs” to her that people would be upset or offended by what she says because she’s a narcissist and believes that everyone can be so profoundly inspired by the shit that comes out of her mouth. That’s why she’s in the self-help line of work.

i’m only halfway thru this video but so far, rachel has only reinforced the idea that she is astronomically out of touch with the average adult. it’s not even about relatability, she straight up doesn’t understand how and why people react negatively to the things she says! even the notion of telling a depressed person “get okay with the mess or pay for a housekeeper” is so…… unhelpful and obtuse

I believe this is a cautionary tale about the fame of self-help gurus and quite honestly, I wish she would stop trying to explain, or apologize, if that’s what this was. To me it’s a lot of contradictory double talk in the hopes a gaining more attention. She messed up. Either apologize and do better or walk away. Frankly, the best scenario would be for her to get the hell out of the spotlight and go focus on her family and spend some serious time rethinking her future plans.

  • @mtdsmom

Key point in the very beginning…. be a good human. RACHEL IS NOT A GOOD HUMAN!!! The whole interview was her blaming her fans for pushing her into a corner of only a specific type of content. In Rachel’s book Girl Wash Your Face was t the only time she mentioned the nanny in the blurb at the end of the book where she thanked people for the help? I don’t remember hearing anything about the nanny. This is the only book I read.
I still don’t give her any credit for any of her “apologies”. They don’t recognize her responsibility of what she really did whole heartedly. They are only surface trying to save face apologies.
This interview made me SO mad!!! She is a complete lier and is constantly manipulating the truth to make it benefit her!!!

Can't believe she had the nerve to say it never occurred to her that people would say she was comparing herself to those women 🤣 Literally the comments that made her so mad were "well you're unrelatable" and "you're privileged AF" and the caption that Rachel herself wrote said that those women were all unrelatable AF. The parallel was obvious. What she was really saying was, "Oh yeah? Well I didn't want to relate to you anyway! These women weren't relatable either and they were better than you, so thanks for lumping me in with them!"

She’s THISCLOSE to full awareness of why people are mad. For example. People aren’t upset and dragging you because you got divorced. Couples get divorced every day. People are upset because you and Dave were billing yourselves as marriage advice gurus while hiding the fact that in reality, your marriage was on the rocks. It’s the lies. It’s the lack of taking responsibility. It’s the taking peoples money and selling them something that turned out to be a total sham. She’s SO CLOSE. Sigh. Maybe one day she’ll get it.

I have tried so hard not to loathe and truly just despise this woman, but the more she talks the harder it gets to not just despise her.
I think I saw someone had interviewed one of her former employees, and as soon as the PPP money ran out she laid off all of her employees.
And I’m with you, and I do not think you’re heartless at all, that she just cannot accept any accountability for what she does. She gained her fame by being relatable and then when she gets famous then she doesn’t need to be relatable anymore? And I agree with you: boo-hoo you went through a divorce and had to pay off your husband. Well stand in line sister, you’re not the only one.
And yes, it probably is very difficult to live your life under a magnifying glass… But here’s a suggestion Rachel, don’t live your life under a magnifying glass, and live like the rest of us do. But no you don’t want to do that; you want the fame and you want the money you just don’t want the accountability. Not buying it, you shouldn’t be selling it.

In the podcast, Rachel never took responsibility for saying “the lady who cleans my toilets” actually, the “sweet lady who cleans my toilets” and how condescending that comes across.
