There is a story of Duke Kahanamoku riding a wave from over a mile off Waikiki beach for over a mile. The location was called Castles and break was named steamer lane because it was so close to the shipping lanes. Kahanamoku estimated the wave was over 30 feet when it first broke. The Hawaiian name for this place is Kalehuawehe and is the holy grail of Oahu south shore surfing.

@@realmorgan3075 It was Lee Boy who started this thread talking about shipping lanes and "Steamer Lane", so take it up with him.
The hotel development has no effect on Castles. Castles is a big wave spot that breaks way offshore, and very rarely. It supposedly can connect to outside Publics and then all the way to the beach between Public's and The Wall. There is no development hindering that.

One wave that doesn't get a lot of credit, is in the south shore of Maui. It's not a very consistent wave, and really only comes to life around 3 times a year. But when it is truly on, it can take 20 minutes to walk back up to the paddle out spot. If you actually paddle all the way back out, it can take a full hour. I'd name the spot, but it's never been crowded. So I'm not gonna drop the name. If you know what I'm talking about, you know what I'm talking about.
