  • On 26 September 2000, waves push the MS Express Samina off course, causing it to hit a group of rocks off Paros and sink, killing 80 people. Subsequent investigation showed that the ferry was on autopilot, with the crew not monitoring the ship's course. They were instead watching an association football match.

The soldiers or some dangerous job workers from rely on training for those dangerous situations, as it is basically "hardcoded" into them, but most people don´t have any training. When you don´t know, what to do, it´s easy to fall into panic mode. And even with all the training, the ability to remain calm is not granted, so you might freak out and lose it.

It wasn't all that similar. The Sewol sank because they made too sharp of a turn and the ship began to list. They weren't using autopilot and hadn't hit anything. The crew was paying plenty of attention which made the fact that they actually told all of those students to stay in their cabins even worse- they knew how bad it was and still chose not to get them out. It also was almost an hour between the time that it began to list and when the crew finally abandoned ship- still not making any attempt to get all of the people off. The only real similarity is that in both cases, the crew was extremely negligent and basically ignored the passengers.

I hate when people compare every ship collision/sinking to the Titanic. I get that that's the most well known thing to compare it to, but seriously. Also, IIRC both the Herald of Free Enterprise and the Estonia were designed with bow doors that were left unlocked and were forced open by heavy seas not stern doors which would be almost if not impossible to force open.

    • @MB-en3ij
      @MB-en3ij 2 года назад +8

Well, this is very similar to Titanic, undeniable. Also the flaw pointed out with this design wasn't the bow door failing but having a one whole level open and undivided which is very susceptible to flooding and capsizing since the water will always accumulate on one side.

I remember watching the tragedy unfold on TV and I couldn't stop wondering what the hell was the crew thinking! It was indeed a national tragedy for my country. The captain should have been jailed for life. Instead he's already released from prison!! That's just outrageous!!! If anyone ever wants to visit our islands, here's a tip. If you're visiting any of our Cyclades islands (Paros, Naxos, Mykonos, Santorini etc...) choose vessels of either "Blue Star Ferries" or "Hellenic Seaways" companies. If you want to visit Crete, choose either "ANEK Lines" or "Minoan Lines". Here's one more tip coming from my father who has visited many of our islands when younger. Avoid any vessel with the word "express" before its main name. If the word is mentioned after the main name of the vessel, it's safe. It just means that it's a very quick one. I hope neither my country nor any other country in the world will ever face such a tragedy again.

Familiarity breeds contempt. The crew became complacent due to their familiarity of the ship and the normal operation. My hope is that when engineers design any systems their primary goal is not just to build something cool but to build something that is the coolest, something designed to prevent loss of life, first and foremost. I don't know how they are today but those water tight doors should automatically close after each opening, in a reasonable time. They should only be able to remain open with a manual tag out/lockout process and, at that, no more than two compartments should be exposed until the tag out/lockout issue has been corrected. And there should be some form of pressurized system that would close those those doors should water be sensed while they are open. They don't have to slam shut but they should close. Yes, crew might be trapped in a flooding compartment but like pilots on an airplane, that is a risk and responsibility you sign up for when you join the crew of an ocean going vessel. Like on an aircraft, safety innocent people outside the craft first, passengers second, then the crew. Sadly, that ship sank mostly from human laziness and unprofessional operation.

as a greek. i know that story.
it happened 2 years before exactly i born.
my father tells me that story bout Samina
it has too complicated to remember it.
that Ship firstly has been in french hands and after in Greek hands.
last Company who had that vessel (till it sinking in 2000) its Minoan Flying Dolphins (now Hellenic Seaways).
he do the route Peraus to Samos with stopover in Paros and Ikaria.
    the problem is..
despite greece its a beautifull country.its notoriously known for the winds .
he can reach and even 12 Beauforts depending if the weather is worst of the worst. eg:
samina has been on worst weather while traveling to its first stopover (Paros).
    after the accident .
Minoan Flying Dolphins defunct and the Rename the company (which is Hellenic Seaways).
*rip to those who they lost the lives and those who they lose someone who they love*

@@minetlav5110 more like not born yet.this happened in 2000 . now im 19 and that accident its very weird..but if you go to paros and tell the story of Samina.they will tell you alot of thinks bout the sinkin.and that event (Sink of Samina) have been 6 years after the Estonia (which result the death of many people onboard.same vessel type (ro/ro) but diffrent desing and bulding and dimensions and many more things).2 months after the accident the owner of the shipowner-vice-president-managing (of Minoan Flying Dolphins .now Hellenic Seaways).comitted suicide cus for the accident of Express Samina (the original given name for the ship).and 5 years after the accident.the trial of the crew of MS Samina has begun. the crew sestenced from 4,6,9,16 and 19 years each (the captain sestenced to 16 yrs imprisoment later reduced to 11 and Leutenant of the ship 19 yrs and reduced to 12.the other sestenced to 8 yrs and after reduced to 5 and the last guy 4 and later reduced to 2½ years).
and the company fined (not sure if they fined heavilly or .that they defunct.and they returned to the seas 5yrs later with another name.
(Hellenic Seaways is the new one).
for the others its fine . but for the others who they lose their life on this event its way more sad. its too sad to lose a friend or a family member who u care alot to an accident like these (airplane, ship, train or car accident).and that give a huge amount of PTSD that the brain cant let them go eassily.

the only lucky circumstance in this tragedy was that water wasn't cold... if that happened in the cold water of Baltic or North Atlantic, many survivors probably wouldn't made it, even though it happened so close to the port and the coast.

Whenever I go on trips on a ferry, I always make a mental note where the exits are in every room or dinning area I enter, I also take selfies with all the locations where the numerous life boats cling to the side of the ferry ship. So when disaster strikes, you best believe I will be one of the first ones out of that room with a life vest on and getting safely either on a life boat that i took selfies with or clinging to the side of a outside walkway facing the sky and ready to jump into the water in seconds, saved my life a couple of times as a yacht charter crew member.

I'm the same way in restaurants. (I live in the middle of the continental U.S., so being at sea isn't really a concern for me. Also I don't do selfies.) But my Dad and I have to compete for the paranoid chair- he has PTSD and I have agoraphobia w/panic attacks. So we always know where the exits are and the best routes to them, and also we like to maintain some line of sight to the front door with a barrier in between to duck behind, that's my ideal position- to have clear sight to the front door with a barrier for protection and near an emergency exit. If I were on a ship I'd prefer to be on the deck near a railing or inside but only one door away from the deck. I'm fat enough to float, but that just means getting trapped inside would be more of a nightmare for the same reason wearing a life jacket inside is.
