Honestly, I wonder whether I have ever this music as it was written before Wand's reading. His Bruckner is legendary. I'm now on the trail of EVERYTHING available of his work.
A magnificient Maestro and conductor. He describes the sorrow, the melancholy and the love of Brahms not easy life with great passion and feeling. The Adagio non troppo is sublime and moving
of course I Know Carlos & Erich Kleiber were Austrians but I Think i forget to add Hans-Schmidt Isserstedt, Kurt Masur, Hans Bülow for instance... Who all were mainly active in the 20 century
Gute Erinnerungen an Günter Wand.

I've heard a few versions of this masterpiece, and this is maybe the best and certainly among the best ever. I particularly love the crisp, resonant, dramatic percussion sound that always underlines all the most dramatic passages. I had never heard it so clear and so stirring.
Einfach wunderbar!
This is maybe the tenth time I have watched this video. It is very much a "live" performance. Great orchestra led by a great conductor of the Austro-German repertoire. I've listened to the CD sets for years. Thanks for posting these videos.
Magic Wand ! He really had a unique way to extract both structure and details from a score, and blend musicians into a single perfect musical instrument. I have grown with his recordings and had always regretted not having seen him live. Thank you very much indeed for posting these films, I can now enjoy seeing the real thing.
Wonderful performance. Thanks. It is interesting to see a young, bearded Roland Greutter sharing the Concertmaster's stand. I've enjoyed Herr Greutter's artistry for many years.
Thank you NDR for uploading this and other Gunter Wand recordings. I heard him and the NDR at the BBC Proms in the late 80s when he rather belatedly attained more international recognition. Especially memorable performances of Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. This is a fine memento.
@@conbrio825 If he never conducted Mahler maybe that makes him the best conductor of Mahler (tied with Toscanini.) He saves us from boredom. I'm sorry to be so dismissive but it seems to me that Mahler's symphonies have the smallest ratio of musical content to elapsed time. For example consider Mozart symphony 35 "Haffner" which takes about 20 minutes. Doesn't this symphony contain at least double the musical content of any of Mahler's symphonies? Mahler takes patience which I don't have. But if anyone can tell me how to appreciate Mahler I'll be happy to listen.
I wish I had been in the audience! Great orchestra! Great conductor! The sound could use some more oomph, especially for the finale. As with other performances here, I'd like to try to blow the roof off of the building [I'm on the 9th, top floor of the condo, within view of the Washington Monument and the Potomac River in Washington,DC]. If successful, that would certainly generate headlines for your orchestra! Cheers!!!
Gunter Wand one of top 5 greatest conductor of the XX century!

Probably the greatest German conductor after Furtwangler and Bruno Walter.

To me, he is the gold standard for Brahms, Beethoven, Bruckner and Mahler.
But unfortunately Wand never conducted a Mahler symphony. Perhaps you mean Schubert!?
@@conbrio825 yes, sorry, no Mahler. Schubert. I somehow confused him with Klaus Tennstedt whose Mahler cycle is my favourite.
