So weird seeing my old hometown on RUclips! My best memories of Ossining was from my early childhood. My father rented a house (now the Jug Tavern) on 76 Revolutionary Road, and my family lived there from about 1958 to about 1963. I loved growing up there, and as a teenager I felt really rotten about "urban renewal", the disappearance of neighborhood solidarity, beloved little stores and a cute little movie theater, and the arrival of shopping malls (replacing a huge nursery) outside of the town center in the early 1970's. Now I live in a wonderful little rural town way north of New York State. And I remember a saying by Thomas Wolfe, "You can't go home again". How true this saying is in this age of car-centered culture and bland architectural modernization.
So many of us have moved from Ossining and mostly all for the same reason. Its just not the town we grew up knowing so well. I grew up just past Maryknoll on 1 Grace Lane. My father built that house on the weekends from’57-‘60. All of us 7 kids went to school in Ossining. Used to do all of our Christmas shopping in Ossining. It would be a pretty good trick if you could do that today. My husband, son and I moved out in ‘03 and live a much quieter life now.
Charrua NYC We moved to Ohio in late ‘03. It’s quiet nice & everyone is friendly. Grew up at 1 Grace Lane just past Maryknoll where my dad built that house in the 50’s.
