GGM: I watch and enjoy all of your videos. This one, by FAR, has been the most useful/most informative one for me personally. As a long time player, I find that your item/skills and abilities videos are geared towards new players, and I can read a wiki for myself (although every 20 minute video has one or two nuggets of next-level info in it). When you do videos like this one, where you dig deeper into the theory and the practical mechanics - that's an entirely different kind of tutorial. I'm guilty of under estimating your knowledge base, and for that I apologize. Thanks for the content you provide. Great job!

Yeah, making everything useful first would be a nice touch. Fleshing out a dragoon barbarian was cool, hopefully they can work on a charge adin. IMHO charge needs some aoe or cc to make it viable.
They really need to allow Cruel + Master's + Fool's mods to spawn all at the same time on rare and crafted weapons so that they have a chance at being more amazing than the popular runeword weapons.

Great vid, you inspired me to make a fanaticism zealer/smiter with this armor and it’s not only fun as hell but shreds ubers and allows it to handle ghosts and physical immunes
Ever since they revealed Mist, I was thinking about creating a bow paladin with it (my holy shock zealot does 15k damage with random bows, and Mist has 100% pierce too). This looks like a cheap natural fit.
100% piece makes it cool
Everytime the bow pierces that's another chance for holy bolt.
Downside is that the bolt comes out of the target not you which diminishes overall pierce damage especially on last hits.
If pve anything works , game is very easy to beat, but pvp could be fun to try thats a challenge

I love your theorycraft videos. This is excellent and I'm so glad you're taking the path least travelled compared to other content creators by looking at these meta-shifting changes and trying out stuff and equipment not considered 'viable' before. Everyone else was like 'FOHdin the new paladin meta!!!' and here's your video going 'here's a zealot using this piece of shit runeword'. I was going to say this is borderline OP but then you nearly died from Lord de Seis' minions and you did die from Infector of Souls lol.
Just a point about the stamina drain. I'm guessing that was put in by the devs to maintain the fantasy of a paladin/cleric wearing heavy full plate armour.
I just don't have very much physical damage reduction, and there's other issues Infector of souls fire spam.
The build could definitely be more tanky, but the tankiness has nothing to do with how this build works.
It's literally just a 20-point investment that adds holy bolt spam to your zeal or smite.
You could easily make a more tanky build that utilizes this as well.
I'm wearing VenomGrips and they are quite nice if they roll max 10% crushing. Move them over to the merc when I find something nicer. (sp)
Laying of hands is basically bis anyways, this is a really cool build. It's rare that equipment changes a playstyle so drastically
The main question I have (unless I missed it in your video) is that can attacks proc both the level 3 and level 5 holy bolt on a single hit of zeal? I have dabbed on chance of cast builds before and I have not recalled having any attacks proc more than 1 spell per hit. If this is true, the level 3 holy bolt proc is actually hurting your dps.
Good question the answer is yes, both proc at the same time even if they have a delay.
"Casting order is normally irrelevant: if two or more skills are triggered by the same event, all are cast on the same frame. Only two situations make the order matter:
1. Two or more triggered skills fire missiles with Next Delay, where only the first to hit a given target will apply to that target.
2. Two or more curses are triggered, where only the last will apply.
Whether it matters or not, the ordering depends (with descending priority) on the trigger event, the equip order, the display order, and finally the skill level of the triggered skills."
Intriguing... I'm working my Zealer through Hell difficulty at the moment and it's tempting. I would have to drop my upped Guardian Angel, but I am a sucker for +skills items.
I'd also have to think about where to take the skill points from. I invested into Holy Shock when I started encountering physical immunes...perhaps this would be a good substitute. One to think about, certainly.

Pretty interesting that a clericdin isn't a meme now and can actually be effective and have a lot of variance to keep it fresh... unlike the boring hammerdin.
Be crazy if they buffed/fixed sanctuary aura. Slap on Azurewrath and that is an insane amount of bonus magic damage.
I actually made this runeword before 2.4. The fire res fits nice to spirit shield. An if you use spirit shield, you probably dont need fcr on your armor. But I agree that it is too expensive. The other armor runewords with character specific skills are less costly.

Im using this build. Thanks for the video. One question. the chance on strike holy bolt damage only gets inceased by fist of heavens synergy, rather than hard points into the skill itself, right?
Correct the level of the holy bolt is set by the item, not by your skill level.
I needed this to reinvigorate my smiter.
It's a fun addition for sure to any smiter
To bad there aren't runewords for boots, this would be a good one, after all it is always good to say your paladin can stand on principle.

The one true Principle Holy Paladin does not mess with peasant auras like Fanaticism or Holy Frost/Shock/Fire. He uses Sanctuary and faces the one true enemy - the unholy undead like a man (meaning he can'thurt anything else :D)

All old ladder runewords are available to everyone, All new 2.4 Ladder only runewords are ladder/single player only.

Paladin with beast for bear transmog, swap to upped goldstrike arch In bear form with principal and holybolt synergies, fant ect. Lol 😆 I've got a beast on NL might try it out haha
I mean... I know that I may be thinking like something too expensive... well kinda but today with this idea in mind I tested a build and I have to say... its kinda insane although it may not be the best still...
With the idea of putting points into FoH only to synergy the holy bolts from the Principle I thought in another build that does that... the Tesladin, well okay but you would say "Tesladin uses Zeal, so you need 20 points into Zeal and 20 into Sacrifice and yare yare yare"... what if, you use Beast... Beast on main hand (gives Fanatiscism) Dream on helm and shield, Principle on Armor, then Dracs for the Life Tap or Laying of Hands for the IAS+Damage to Demons... then a Raven + Soj or BK, amulet Mara or Highlords, maybe Cat's Eye actually, boots Gore Riders or Aldurs, tested with full inventory with gc + 30 lifers and CTA... end up being able to put 15 (char lv 95) extra points on Holy Shield, Conviction until total 25 points, 20 points into salvation and 20 into lightning resist for the tesladin part, then 20 points into Foh and you dont need anything else cause the Bear doesn't use skills, you can't teleport so it isn't necesary to thing that you're actually wasting that, you cant Zeal, you cant use holy bolt... but now you will have 8k normal attack damage+the holy bolt damage from the principle + the -defense from the Conviction, the damage from the holy shock, the minus lightning resist from conviction, you will be running 3 auras... at this point you have a almost 7k life bear tesladin with normal attacks of 8k + holy bolt and you know what it isn't that expensive, a normal Tesladin uses Enigma, you have Ber and Jah there plus 2 more Jah for the Dreams and if using Grief then a Lo, here you have 1 Ber for Beast, 2 Jah for Dream and a Gul... now of course if you wanna make it more crazy you could do weapon change and use a grief or botd after transformation and then make a last wish and a lawbringer for an act 5 merc its kinda crazy

I was literally looking into this build even before the patch. Look very fun and unique. My only thought is in the patch notes for 2.4 it states holy bolt got a 50% damage increase due to taking away the synergy with Blessed hammer. When I compare holy bolt damage with a scale calculator the damage seems to be the same pre and post patch. Thoughts?
Yes it is the same as before. They upped the damage to counter the loss of one synergy. So it is effectively the same damage for less points.
However multiple things have changed.
Less skill point investment then before 20 vs 40
Holy Bolt now damages demons in addition to undead.
Holy Bolt now pierces instead of dissapating on impact.
Wear Azurewrath with Sanctuary aura and you have one mighty tool of the lord who bringeth not peace, but a sword. Hallelujah!
I guess am gonna make some tweaks to my tesladin. This looks fun! bye enigma. I need to turn down points from zeal and sacrifice tho.
Unfortunately you do have to sacrifice some points, thankfully it's only 20 points.
Make sure you do have enough attack rating to actually hit stuff though. 🤣
Question - theory crafting
What if you use this with a kuko/demon machine holy fire exploding arrow pierce pally? Hybrid with FoH.
It might be fun, and double up on the AOE, just worried about losing a shield for resists, and the low resists on Principle. Need those resists for hc, and would be using an aura already, so no salvation.
This might be the single handed most under rated paladin armor in the game. You could use a 4x p diamond pally shield a 6x shaeled phase blade and nothing else but principle and you could clear hell chaos players 1 with no issues
I'm wondering if Im a paladin with a bow and I got piercing attacks from other items , will the holy bolt trigger everytime an arrow pierces ?
Just thinking of this principle armor or a strafe amazon --> holy bolt machine gun :D. more show than dmg, but hey, it is STYLE :D
lol not much damage but yes it would be a literal machine gun.
Now try to add Goldstrike Arch, and Mist, (gonna have to max out holy bolt for FoH dmg too) and you have a FoH/ HB Ranger paladin!
Mist, could be interesting the only real issue is each holy bolt comes out of the monster you hit not you. So the piercing holy bolts are less effective then they otherwise would be.

I was under the impression that only ‘on proc’ of a one particular skill can proc per instance. Basically if you 5 instances of ‘10% chance to proc X nova on struck’ when you get hit ,once one nova goes off you cannot proc nova from a different instance ,on the same hit. Similarly I believe that the holy bolt being 2 instances (LOH and principal) you can only proc one per hit. principal being the higher lvl proc and being 100% you shouldn’t ever actually proc the laying of hands Holy Bolt.

Does the holy bolt work with smite? That would definitely help to keep your merc alive against ubers better if the bolt hit them. It's only REAL downside is that it doesn't add any defense to the armor.
It’s 100% mod on the rune word
Holy bolt from laying of hands and principle casts at the same time. Holy bolt has NEXT HIT DELAY. IF you get the gloves to proc you are getting 50% chance to lower your dmg depending on which holy bolt dmg is applied.
They cast at the same time but in order of equipment order. Which means you control which is first its not random.
Also holy bolt used to have next hit delay, doesn't seem like it anymore.
Next hit delay will get represented as an X for a miss. You see it all the time with fire attacks.
It doesn't happen with holy bolt anymore, since they added pierce.

The the rune Gul isnt the problem, the problem is this runeword doesn't have any defensive mechanics. If it had a chance to cast cleansing and or defiance itll be a lot better. The druid armor can cast wind shield, necro with bone shield, assassin with fade and so forth. All defensive mechanics except for this one
The principle armor and gloves also counteract a fire sunder charm by themselves

Max ias for pali is 5.2 ( with a phase lade and 72ias ) zeal and no fanatism if u have fanatism u dont need the extra 72ias
Phase blades don't fit into every build unfortunately, and not all builds use a grief or can benefit from the bonus damage.
But 4 frame zeal is ideal for a lot of build irregardless

Hello, Could you make a highlight video of the principle rune word and laying of hands on ASN with Nat's Mark plus anything else that would add damage too demons and undead. I maybe wrong but I imagine that could be a dangerous trap Assassin. also I was imagining a Necro summoner with Principle seems like it would be contradictory and fun to try, Holy Bolt healing undead minions.
Non paladins won't get much use out of principle because they don't have synergy bonuses.
I wouldn't use principle for the holy bolts on a non paladin class.
Serious consideration - putting this on the act 5 barbarian frenzy mercenary... could it be busted?
This was a great informative video, though I have no clue how I am gonna get a Gul Rune I am playing on a PS 5 non ladder lvl 80. I finished the Game in Nightmare mode, but I cannot even barley kill the Zombies in the first area on Hell mode. The debuff on resistances murders me. Then the Zombies light me up literally. Zappn the crap out of me!!!
Lol, takes time to farm gear, gul runes aren't ridiculously rare. I would suggest nightmare terror zones if your having issues in hell
I just made a Hustle Chest Piece, with a 436 Defense Dusk Shroud for Cheetah like speed with Zeal I hope. I have a Guardian Naga Axe that kicks Butt, has a Poison AoE. My Shield is Ok I guess Tiamat's Rebuke. I just wish my Attack Rating was better....and Yes Thank You I am Grinding in Nightmare Terror Zones. @@GGMentor

Yup all demons, so the holy bolt would just be added damage to the build.
Since it happens on hit the build would functionally be exactly the same. You would just be spamming a bunch of holy bolts ⚡⚡

Some of the + to skill class armor runewords really suck because the runes they require are just too damn high
This would actually be sick if they did the same thing path of diablo did and add splash melee damage.
this makes me think of goldstrike bow combined with all of these. could make an interesting proc build. i loved doing this just to see all the holy bolts for fun. could be viable now. also maybe strafe zon?
Unfortunately on anything but a paladin the holy bolts would be worthless.

It's in the settings, you need to enable it.
22:00 Uhm wait a sec..I was always under the impression that like proc's only proc once during a multi hit attack like zeal and fend and fury and such and not like every hit, like every hit has a chance to proc but it can only proc once during the whole skill execution animation or something, so you wont be getting like 5 proc's per attack cycle from zeal but just the one ?
You can clearly see them and count them coming out lol. Also I have tested procs with a completely different build a procazon using every proc item available. it's pretty crazy how many procs you can have at once. Video is up on my channel if you want to see it.
Read the tooltip, prayer synergy is 20% life healed, not damage.
I calculated two different amounts in the video.

"theres almost no armours that give max poisoin resists" guardian angel and venom ward are both armours that give max poisoin resists
Venom Ward is not end game viable, guardian angel doesn't hit the 95% cap by itself.
Venom grips are terrible gloves.
Are you sure the Principle and LoH stack? I thought the holy bolt having a 100% chance from Principle negates any chance to cast from LoH. They are separate calculations, but I thought you can't cast 2 holy bolts at once so it doesn't really matter... In my experience with Principle it also messes with other CTC procs. Maybe they changed something from vanilla.
All ctc procs are separate, so two 50% procs don't equal 100
It's just 2 50% chances.
So principle an loh just have 100% + 10%
@@GGMentor Yes I know as I mentioned they are separate calcs in my comment... The point is something can't happen 110% of the time or 100% and 10% of the time... It doesn't shoot 2 holy bolts and the damage doesn't stack on to one right?
@@jblps I have tested this on my hurricane werewolf druid who uses twister procs.
He has 4 separate twister procs and yes multiple sets of twisters come out at the same time.
It's not happening 110% of the time.
Also before procs with delay timers could interfere with each other.
After 2.4 delay timers are now separate.
However if you have a skill like frozen orb which has a delay timer you can't have two frozen orbs proc at the same time because they will interfere with each other.
Holy Bolt has no delay timer.

But like I said in my original comment unless they changed something... so they changed how it works in 2.4... hmm interesting. I'm still not seeing 2 holy bolts proc so I'm still not convinced this is working.

Twisters do not come out at the same trajectory they're random.
So when you have two twisters proc at the same time you can see that they're proccing at the same time.
When you have two holy bolts proc at the same time you can't see it.

The Guardian Angel gives you 15 max to all res.
yes, and when it does it lacks that 5% extra to cap off the 95%. 75%+15% = 90% + 5% = 95%
In otherwords it's hard to get that last 5% poison cap.
@@GGMentor the max res any character can have is 90. It will not go any higher. I can screen shot my pally for you with the guardian angle on?
They have had to of changed it since I last played the game when it originally released back in the 90's. You couldn't reach a 95% before. That's good to know though. I'm sure I could make a 95% all res character.
Tried this armor with a Javazon. Seems like it clears chaos faster.
The holy bolt won't do much at all for a javazon.

No synergy bonus so it would be pretty bad, but it would still do minimal damage

I spent 20 points which isn't enough to make any of the Abilities worthwhile on their own.
You would need 80 points to make fist of the heavens viable, and bare minimum 40 points to make holy bolt viable.
Basically you are only spending 20 points for the ability to spam holy bolts while attacking normally.
i will try it on my smiter for uber.

Not quite sure what you mean, the two procs from principal and laying of Hands can happen at the same time. And the holy bolts cast by the armor do get synergy bonuses

So it becomes a fully synergized lvl 5 Holy bolt

@@GGMentor like 15 years playing this game and never knew that. I'm currently running a fohdin only the magical damage spec side of it. With smite secondary and my fcr has bottle necked my single target DPS from holy bolt. I this set up could fix that. I skip low density packs for that reason.

That is a "reanimated" a special undead skeleton which is summoned by specific items like tomb reaver or faith bow.
They are mostly useless, have bad ai, wander around, and die after a set time
Hey my bowazon loves her not so smart skelly army faith provides. On cow's I've actually seen them finish some enemies off. They aren't totally useless. They at the very least attract enemies attention.
Use EXILE instead of HOZ!
Prayer bonus is for "healing" NOT a "damage" boost synergy.

Why are you using it in the cow level?
Holy bolt only damages Undead before the patch, After the patch it damages Undead and Demons as well as pierces.
The best place to use this would be Chaos Sanctuary. You basically took him to the worst location for farming with the Holy bolts. Notice how in your video the holy bolts are not hitting anything? in 2.3 when a holy bolts hits something it dissipates. Since it can't hit cows it just goes through them and does nothing, seeking a target it can damage.
The amount of damage it does in Chaos is far greater.
@@GGMentor I am aware. The reason why I took him to the cow level is to showcase the amount of holy bolt spam that the build can dish out. If I took him to the chaos sanctuary before the patch the undead would block the bolts and we don't get to see the spam. I took him to the chaos sanctuary after the patch, the spam is superb but unfortunately its not as impressive as I hope it would be. It doesn't wipe everything super fast. It wipes everything super fast when I manually cast foh tho. BTW the build has hand of blessed light and thundergods vigor and the mandatory laying of hands to maximize the spam. Even my merc has the principle armor.
@@empirean1166 it's not meant to be a main damage source, it's a 20 skill point supplement.
It does a lot of damage and works extremely well as supplemental damage.
Added to an already functional zealer or smite build it adds utility, aoe damage, and non physical damage to the build.
It works especially well for physical only zealers because it adds a way to dish out extra damage to physical immunes.
@@GGMentor yeah as a suppliment it does work. Its actually really fun to play. It plays like a normal zealer with the added benefit of casting bolts and even foh. Really brings the holy warrior flavor of the class. BTW, do you have any thoughts on sacrifice and thorns? I would love to hear your thoughts.
