Its also super important to kill things fast. If you're trying to kill cows, make a javazon. If you're doing travincal, make a barb or a hammerdin. Taking twice as long to kill things is going to halve the number of runes you find.
Kill speed definitely matters. I've been finding more high runes since I found a Shako and got the extra 2 skill points to boost my skills to level 31.
You’re absolutely correct. It’s been my experience that if I bunch up as many monsters as humanly possible and annihilate them, runes drop. It’s ridiculous the amount of high runes I’ve collected this ladder season from employing your tactic. 👍👍👍
The reason LK super chests are so good is because they have predetermined drop patterns and of those on P7 there’s something like 8-9 patterns that include Sur, 1 that includes Ber and tons of others that include other good HRs like Lo and Ohm. On lower player counts though those patterns decrease and you don’t have as good of a chance to get Sur runes and the chance for Ber to drop out of a chest is non existent. It’s a good spot to farm on BNet but it’s deff more of a single player spot to farm.
I've gotten better runes from clearing the poppables in LK than I've gotten from the super chests. I've had better luck overall doing Ancient Tunnel runs. Kill speed definitely matters.
@@formdoggie5 facts I play both BNet and single player and I have the god tier LK map for single player and even still with the chests super close to the WP I’ve done probably 100,000 runs and still have yet to see a Ber drop there. I think the best rune I’ve gotten from there was an Ohm. I finally found a Jah and a Ber and both of them came from just random ass enemies you wouldn’t expect to drop one. Good shit always seems to drop when you’re not actively searching for it lol
@@dzilla4208 Agree 100%. There's nothing wrong with doing some LK runs here and there, but it's silly to become obsessed with that. You'll most likely get that super high rune when you least expect it.
Thanks for a very good an informative video. An almost ideal way to farm runes is to do seal-popping in Chaos Sanctuary in 8 players games. So far I've found 2xJah, 3xCham, 1x Mal, 2x Pul in couple of days. This is kind of hard to do and it must, usually, be done in conjecture with Baal runs with a fast character, albeit not the most optimal for everybody.
Yeah do to the various immunities of all the seal monsters it can be difficult for some characters. There are also draw backs to this approach which include no magic find being applied to the monsters deaths, and it requires a rather well built teleporting character. Something most people are not.

Found my first Ber in Canyon of the Magi. The best items I have found have been off regular mobs Marrowwalk off a minion vamp in Arcane Sanctuary, a Lidless Wall off a Barrel...XD and a Raven Frost from a normal chest.

The few high runes I've gotten tend to pop up when I least expect them to. The one CHAM and BER rune I got both dropped on the fifth floor of the countess tower, both of them when said floor was really full of mobs to the point that it was downright chaotic there. (I played my summon druid during both instances.) I got my one JAH in one of the act 5 caves. Don't remember which one, though. OHM's and VEXes have been a bit more all over the place. I also got surprised by an IST in act 5 in NM.
@@Northlander72 Just got a Lo from Tower level 2. made a Ser. I find that Tower is just the best place to farm runes, never found anything in lower Kurast or anything high in Trav. always guaranteed at least some kind rune.
Just wanna point out that Countess can also drop no runes at all. Happened to me quite a lot. So it's definitely not guaranteed that you will se a rune drop between 1-6.
Found ber and vex players 1 tombs!! The density there is insane. Had four low lvl runes drop right beside eachother. (edit)* just found freaking jah doing this now too first run of day first tomb players 3!!!!!!
I remember watching someone explain the chest in Lower K have set drops, and what list of set drops changes depending on the number of players. So if you wanted to hunt for a Ber rune you would play with 7 players because the Ber rune was on the list of 60k possible drops that the chest can give. (not sure if that was right rune or number of players, just an example.) Super chest each item is not random, just roll off a list to see what set of items drops. *tosses log on the fire*

I did a hundred Countess runs and the highest rune i ever found on level 5 of Countess tower dropped from a normal monster (GUL). She is good for Lems and Kos and Puls but that is about i in my experience.
I’ve always had my great success finding high runes in arcane sanctuary, act 3 zakarum jungle dungeons, and act 4 river of flame. I’ve also found a Cham and a Ohm in act 5 abadon mini dungeon. Thanks for the great content and love watching these. -Bigzeignasty from twitch :)
lower kurast magic chests are influeced too by MF%equip, at +200% the magic/rare/unique drops very often. Same goes for gems and jewels. Also save any blue monarchs you might find in there.
Yes only the "Super Chests" or the "Sparkling Chests" are not affected by magic find. everything else is. The Super Chests have predetermined loot basically. If they drop uniques they were always going to drop a unique at 0% mf or 1000% mf

Thankfully my merc had 75 all res with treachery fade buff even with Andy’s on. 25 life leech with a good IAS break point keeps my merc alive 95% of the time. 😁
Fast Merc is best Merc, the faster he attacks the better he survives. Might wanna look up the Merc ias breakpoints and see if he is near the next frame increase.

Could be a coincidence but I think it is the amount of sudden high level monsters attacking you and you end up killing them all swiftly. And also your high kill count
Nice video with a lot of great info. As a new player i didnt know alot of these things about rune drops. I made a vital mistake when i was making a "white" wand by adding the runes to an artisans 2 socket and not a grey item. I found the io rune from river of flame quest. I have never found another one and im in hell act 2 on my bonemancer. All the runes ive found have been lower runes and takes forever to cube to get to io. This information will make it easier for me to finally find some of these good runes. Thanks heaps!
Just wanted to swing through and share some knowledge. Do not rely on cubing up to get runes unless you're cubing high runes, which I wouldn't recommend unless you absolutely need to. If you wanted to cube up to a Jah for example, it would require millions of El runes. Concentrate on running AS or LK (Arcane Sanctuary or Lower Kurast) for your runes. Then later add Chaos Sanctuary and Cows.
To get an Io and a Dol rune with a character weak in Hell, just run Nightmare Countess [way smaller maps and way fewer immunities compared to Hell], keeping the runes from Hel and up. If you get something higher from NM Countess, like Lum or Ko, you can easily trade down to get the Io.
RNG is definitely a huge factor when it comes to hunting runes. I did level a zon from 71 to 86 in just hell cows and only got one mal rune from it. Such has been my luck so far in D2R...

I never thought I would see anybody build an avenger on D2 these days. Very good build and lots of elemental damage. I prefer using a 2 handed edeath with fanat aura. Infinity on merc. Wish I seen avengers online more often.
I love my Vengeance Paladin So many things to like. You are super tanky due to the nice max resistances, you are very helpful to the group with lvl 25 conviction, You can literally kill anything that comes your way and are more often than not at the front of the battle because of it. In general the build is extremely fun to play. The only real downside is it's mainly single target damage.
First high rune I ever found was a Zod, and this only took me playing the game since I was 5 years old to find one last week. Lol. On top of that, I found a Vex, a Lo, and a Sur also this last week and I haven't seen one drop every before in the history of my time playing Diablo 2 LoD.
The only criticism I have is you did not explain how Countess works, she can only drop up to IST from her Runes List but she can drop up to LO on her general loot list. That's why above IST is rarely seen as the higher runes are on her general list which has literally hundreds of items to pick from.
I think I would have also mentioned ghost, gloams and the fingers are good source for jewels and jewelry as well. Now my memory may be fuzzy on these or possibly mixing up mods, D2R from vanilla LOD but I'm pretty sure players 7 and 8 eliminates no drop chance completely. Also I know higher player counts was a bad idea for farming countess because of how her special rune drops worked. Anyways glad to see another D2 content creator. I just recently discovered the channel.
Side note: i've found up to ohm in lk super chests, but ive also found vex, gul and sur along the northern side of lower kurast in the stone canisters. I also have found a sur in the temple in the kurast causeway....the one that has the room with like 15 rock piles. That seems to be a good place to find runes. I've found Lo's and vex im the wooden chests and baskets right below the stairs leading to shenk from the wp. Only ber i've found was from a unique monster in ancient tunnels. Never found a jah, cham, or zod....yet.
@@Sweetguy1821 I've found 2 Sur runes in LK runs. 1 from a campfire chest and 1 from a buzzard. I mostly find Pul and Vex runes though. Almost never run with over 170 MF%.
I almost always play p1 solo. This is also sporadic play on and off for years so it wasn't crazy blind luck. The ber was fairly recent on resurrected, but most of the others were on classic pc 1.11 and higher
I use a combination of stuff. I have a ground loop isolator to reduce Interference, as well as a noise cancelling effect in obs. My headset is a GamesterGear Cruiser P3210
I don't recall if it has been mentioned... but in lower Kurast the two huts with the bonfire can actually appear twice on the same map. I'm currently in lower Kurast and the map shows them twice. So heads up to everyone... when you find those two huts don't immediately leave but make sure to uncover the entire map or you may miss another iteration of the super chests.
Btw I've found that using Thurnderlord's Vigor belt makes you pretty much immune to whisps. The only problem I have is that it has to replace my String of Ears and I don't have that much physical resist items yet on my single player hardcore barb. I have maxed out my shield block and I play with concentrate and berserk, so I think lightning invulnerability is worth it.
If your talking about countess she specifically has Lo as her highest rune. The irony is you can get much higher from the elite monsters in her tower then from her.
@@GGMentor Very late to this video but figured i would add to this in that is actually is possible to drop up to a Zod from Arcane Sanctuary hell difficulty. I found my first Zod ever in arcane sanctuary from a ghost while doing key farms. It was a players 3 game I'm fairly sure.
you were wrong about rune drop in Arcane Sanctuary, it's easy to understand rune drop rule than Tc/qlvl, it's about area/monsters champion/unique Lv for certain runes drop, for example: a Zod rune. Zod drop in area/monsters lv 81 or champion area79/unique(minions) area 78 and above, so Arcane Sanctuary is area 79 every monsters in this area drop up to jah or cham, but the champion/unique(minions) have enough lv to drop zod. Btw my English is not good so i hope you can understand
Nah pretty common for runes to come from the most unlikely places, urns, baskets, random white mob. I rarely ever see them fall from anywhere important
Countess drops only up to Lo, sure. BUT Imps in her tower (as well as other monsters) drop up to Cham. So killing massive groups on the way towards Countess can sometimes be pretty beneficial.
Finger mages are money. I didn't know that about swarms and vultures. Awesome video. I've found some nice runes including a vex and mal lately from finger mages. That means Maggot Lair is one of the best places to farm runes for sure. I've been struggling in chaos with my sorc. I'll be living in the maggot lair for a few weeks.
The super chests in lower kurast specifically have preset loot tables. meaning they choose from an existing list of specific items, and they will choose which group of items at random. This list includes I think all of the 5 highest runes in the game, "I still need to check on that" But either way, by cubing up, it is by far the best way of obtaining the top five runes. *If you are single player.
@@GGMentor Oh for sure, and being the fastest way technically does not mean it is the best way to obtain the high runes, so I misspoke slightly. But that table also contains some other good items, and you can roll a good map that has two torch rings close to the WP in Lower Kurast. That's a total of 6 super chests each run, and it takes only seconds.
@@GGMentor Cubing up still has its uses. For example, I needed a Mal rune for my Grief weapon and had loads of Lem, Fal and Pul runes. So, I was able to cube up to get the rune I needed.
Great information thank you. So I found a perfect way for the necro to keep all his revives when traveling but some people won't like it..... 😂 Walk. Sounds silly but it really feels good, as you trudge around and your minions being slightly faster always get in front. He is like a general, just casually picking up what he wants whilst occasionally throwing spells and curses at whim.
Neat idea, but doesn't quite work as advertised on revives.. They seem to have an AI of their own, and they'd much rather despawn than bother following you. That is, unless you teleport, in which case they WILL deal damage, but most of them will barely move and stay stacked on top of eachother.
@@GGMentor hate the Maggot Lair. There just isn't enough mob density to make the crappy map design worth it. There are too many other level 85 areas to take advantage of.
@@mickpratt8327 I've been to the maggot lair as an Amazon, she blows through it amazingly fast. Doesn't really matter about mob density. There's tons of swarms and that's what matters for rune hunting.
Doing maggot lair on a bone necro is super fast. 2 - 3 Quick bonespears and then follow with CE and just rush through it. Lots of swarms and tightly grouped mobs.
I play singleplayer in xbox with a strafezon, i dropped a Jah from a ghost, in arcane sanctuary. Since i am playing with strafezon i am getting a bunch o runes, one tip to get runes is kill more monsters fast as u can, and a strafezon is really good for it.
6:35 pretty sure you can only find upto BER rune in LK. LK is a great place to get runes though just run around opening containers super chests are nice but i find most my runes off other stuff.
This is one of the most annoying levels in the game. Narrow pathways and sometimes ghosts are dying in the void not dropping anything. I lure them on the pathway then pick them up but its annoying. Also every monster there is dropping scroll of identify or scroll of town portal or mana potion. The 3 chests on all 3 corners never give anything good. Few expensive items but nothing of use. The Summoner's key is worth running the level but in general it bores me to the core.

Its still a 1 through 8 in 70,000 chance though, so dont expect miracles lol.

When I was young playing this game, The Forgotten Tower (If I remember the name correctly) was a GREAT place to farm Runes and it was early game.

I find that when you do the countess you can kill the monsters outside the castle for runes. It doesn't always work but you can find several.

Could be a coincidence but I think it is the amount of sudden high level monsters attacking you and you end up killing them all swiftly. And also your high kill count
Nice video with a lot of great info. As a new player i didnt know alot of these things about rune drops. I made a vital mistake when i was making a "white" wand by adding the runes to an artisans 2 socket and not a grey item. I found the io rune from river of flame quest. I have never found another one and im in hell act 2 on my bonemancer. All the runes ive found have been lower runes and takes forever to cube to get to io. This information will make it easier for me to finally find some of these good runes. Thanks heaps!
Just wanted to swing through and share some knowledge. Do not rely on cubing up to get runes unless you're cubing high runes, which I wouldn't recommend unless you absolutely need to. If you wanted to cube up to a Jah for example, it would require millions of El runes. Concentrate on running AS or LK (Arcane Sanctuary or Lower Kurast) for your runes. Then later add Chaos Sanctuary and Cows.
To get an Io and a Dol rune with a character weak in Hell, just run Nightmare Countess [way smaller maps and way fewer immunities compared to Hell], keeping the runes from Hel and up. If you get something higher from NM Countess, like Lum or Ko, you can easily trade down to get the Io.
RNG is definitely a huge factor when it comes to hunting runes. I did level a zon from 71 to 86 in just hell cows and only got one mal rune from it. Such has been my luck so far in D2R...
Some of the higher runes are just incredibly rare. Good luck actually finding a zod. It almost never happens.

I never thought I would see anybody build an avenger on D2 these days. Very good build and lots of elemental damage. I prefer using a 2 handed edeath with fanat aura. Infinity on merc. Wish I seen avengers online more often.
I love my Vengeance Paladin So many things to like. You are super tanky due to the nice max resistances, you are very helpful to the group with lvl 25 conviction, You can literally kill anything that comes your way and are more often than not at the front of the battle because of it.
In general the build is extremely fun to play. The only real downside is it's mainly single target damage.
First high rune I ever found was a Zod, and this only took me playing the game since I was 5 years old to find one last week. Lol. On top of that, I found a Vex, a Lo, and a Sur also this last week and I haven't seen one drop every before in the history of my time playing Diablo 2 LoD.
The only criticism I have is you did not explain how Countess works, she can only drop up to IST from her Runes List but she can drop up to LO on her general loot list. That's why above IST is rarely seen as the higher runes are on her general list which has literally hundreds of items to pick from.

I think I would have also mentioned ghost, gloams and the fingers are good source for jewels and jewelry as well.
Now my memory may be fuzzy on these or possibly mixing up mods, D2R from vanilla LOD but I'm pretty sure players 7 and 8 eliminates no drop chance completely. Also I know higher player counts was a bad idea for farming countess because of how her special rune drops worked.

Side note: i've found up to ohm in lk super chests, but ive also found vex, gul and sur along the northern side of lower kurast in the stone canisters. I also have found a sur in the temple in the kurast causeway....the one that has the room with like 15 rock piles. That seems to be a good place to find runes.
I've found Lo's and vex im the wooden chests and baskets right below the stairs leading to shenk from the wp.
Only ber i've found was from a unique monster in ancient tunnels.
Never found a jah, cham, or zod....yet.
I've found 6 or 7 ber and still never found sur or zod yet
@@Sweetguy1821 I've found 2 Sur runes in LK runs. 1 from a campfire chest and 1 from a buzzard. I mostly find Pul and Vex runes though. Almost never run with over 170 MF%.
The only Jah I’ve over found was in Halls of Vaught right before Nihlathak. Random monster.
I almost always play p1 solo. This is also sporadic play on and off for years so it wasn't crazy blind luck. The ber was fairly recent on resurrected, but most of the others were on classic pc 1.11 and higher

I don't recall if it has been mentioned... but in lower Kurast the two huts with the bonfire can actually appear twice on the same map. I'm currently in lower Kurast and the map shows them twice. So heads up to everyone... when you find those two huts don't immediately leave but make sure to uncover the entire map or you may miss another iteration of the super chests.

Btw I've found that using Thurnderlord's Vigor belt makes you pretty much immune to whisps. The only problem I have is that it has to replace my String of Ears and I don't have that much physical resist items yet on my single player hardcore barb. I have maxed out my shield block and I play with concentrate and berserk, so I think lightning invulnerability is worth it.

The highest rune to drop here is def not a Lo rune. I found a Ber here the other day.

If your talking about countess she specifically has Lo as her highest rune.
The irony is you can get much higher from the elite monsters in her tower then from her.
@@GGMentor I thought her highest dedicated drop was a Lo rune but she was able to drop higher runes from her item pool. She has 2 separate pools.
@@GGMentor Very late to this video but figured i would add to this in that is actually is possible to drop up to a Zod from Arcane Sanctuary hell difficulty. I found my first Zod ever in arcane sanctuary from a ghost while doing key farms. It was a players 3 game I'm fairly sure.
you were wrong about rune drop in Arcane Sanctuary, it's easy to understand rune drop rule than Tc/qlvl, it's about area/monsters champion/unique Lv for certain runes drop, for example: a Zod rune. Zod drop in area/monsters lv 81 or champion area79/unique(minions) area 78 and above, so Arcane Sanctuary is area 79 every monsters in this area drop up to jah or cham, but the champion/unique(minions) have enough lv to drop zod. Btw my English is not good so i hope you can understand

Lower Kurast, clear area but save all the chests. After switch to 7 players and go pop all the chests = profit

My only BER runes i got, which is only 2 and my only SUR came from the Spider packs in Act 1 Catacombs. Which was weird.
Nah pretty common for runes to come from the most unlikely places, urns, baskets, random white mob. I rarely ever see them fall from anywhere important

Countess drops only up to Lo, sure.
BUT
Imps in her tower (as well as other monsters) drop up to Cham.
So killing massive groups on the way towards Countess can sometimes be pretty beneficial.
Especially the ghosts packs which have higher than normal rune drop chance

I get some runes from Maggot Lair in D2 LoD, I just got a Lem, Ist, and Um all in same run other day among many other runes.
Finger mages are money. I didn't know that about swarms and vultures. Awesome video. I've found some nice runes including a vex and mal lately from finger mages. That means Maggot Lair is one of the best places to farm runes for sure. I've been struggling in chaos with my sorc. I'll be living in the maggot lair for a few weeks.

The super chests in lower kurast specifically have preset loot tables. meaning they choose from an existing list of specific items, and they will choose which group of items at random.
This list includes I think all of the 5 highest runes in the game, "I still need to check on that" But either way, by cubing up, it is by far the best way of obtaining the top five runes. *If you are single player.
I feel like cubing up at some point is a massive waste to all the uses those runes have
@@GGMentor Oh for sure, and being the fastest way technically does not mean it is the best way to obtain the high runes, so I misspoke slightly. But that table also contains some other good items, and you can roll a good map that has two torch rings close to the WP in Lower Kurast. That's a total of 6 super chests each run, and it takes only seconds.
@@GGMentor Cubing up still has its uses. For example, I needed a Mal rune for my Grief weapon and had loads of Lem, Fal and Pul runes. So, I was able to cube up to get the rune I needed.

So I found a perfect way for the necro to keep all his revives when traveling but some people won't like it..... 😂
Walk. Sounds silly but it really feels good, as you trudge around and your minions being slightly faster always get in front. He is like a general, just casually picking up what he wants whilst occasionally throwing spells and curses at whim.
Neat idea, but doesn't quite work as advertised on revives.. They seem to have an AI of their own, and they'd much rather despawn than bother following you. That is, unless you teleport, in which case they WILL deal damage, but most of them will barely move and stay stacked on top of eachother.

@@GGMentor hate the Maggot Lair. There just isn't enough mob density to make the crappy map design worth it. There are too many other level 85 areas to take advantage of.

Doesn't really matter about mob density.
There's tons of swarms and that's what matters for rune hunting.
Doing maggot lair on a bone necro is super fast. 2 - 3 Quick bonespears and then follow with CE and just rush through it. Lots of swarms and tightly grouped mobs.

I play singleplayer in xbox with a strafezon, i dropped a Jah from a ghost, in arcane sanctuary. Since i am playing with strafezon i am getting a bunch o runes, one tip to get runes is kill more monsters fast as u can, and a strafezon is really good for it.

6:35 pretty sure you can only find upto BER rune in LK. LK is a great place to get runes though just run around opening containers super chests are nice but i find most my runes off other stuff.

Best tutorial to find runes
Arcane sanctuary drops up to Cham. Had 3x drop while key farming
This is one of the most annoying levels in the game. Narrow pathways and sometimes ghosts are dying in the void not dropping anything. I lure them on the pathway then pick them up but its annoying. Also every monster there is dropping scroll of identify or scroll of town portal or mana potion. The 3 chests on all 3 corners never give anything good. Few expensive items but nothing of use. The Summoner's key is worth running the level but in general it bores me to the core.
