  • As one of the key platinum group metals, palladium is a highly prized commodity. It commands more monetary value than gold and is 30 times as rare, with industrial demand outstripping supply for the last decade.
Palladium plays a vital role in reducing harmful emissions and is the premiere choice for hybrid electric vehicle exhaust systems, making it an essential component of the new green economy.
In the world of jewelry, palladium’s unique properties make it ideal in the creation of white gold and its ability to absorb 900 times its volume in hydrogen makes it invaluable in the field of chemistry.
In this palladium documentary, we seek to clear the air and provide the facts on one of the most vital platinum group metals.

As someone who does back yard refining I can say from first hand experience that Palladium is a true PITA to recover and refine. I'm actually shocked it is as cheap as it is. I would honestly expect it to be 4-5X more expensive. But it is a beautiful metal and my 2nd favourite right behind silver.

One of the biggest application palladium is in catalysis, which has been extensively used pharmaceutical industry and other industries including bulk, commodity chemicals and agrochemicals. Due to this 2010 Chemistry Nobel Prize was awarded for palladium catalysis (Prof. Negishi, Prof. Suzuki and Prof. Heck). It would have been great if the speaker included this information as well.

With one exception - questioning if electrification will fully come to pass seems quite illogical. What are the alternatives? Are you proposing humanity goes back to horses? The oil will run out so there is no alternative to electrification.

    • @CommodityCulture

This is very misguided. Oil will not run out, we have plenty. Fossil fuels are to be embraced, not shunned.

Platinum and palladium play two completely different roles in catalytic converters. Platinum stores and releases oxygen where as palladium breaks nitrogen from no2 but it can only do so when there is a absence of free oxygen. That's why fuel control systems must cycle from rich to lean in a precise manner.

I enjoyed the history of Palladium presented. However, I am sure that internal combustion engines WILL vanish within the next 40 to 50 years. They are already being legislated out of the auto industry by 2030 or 2040 in most developed countries. As you noted there are many processes that will still require Pd.
