the anvil thing isnt true, hit an anvil. its just a dull bonk. they used a church bell and they had to tune up to the microtonally incorrect tuning of the church's bell.

In 1987 I was 15 years old and diagnosed with bone cancer in my right leg above the knee. I was a huge Metallica fan at the time and had written Ride the lightning on my sneakers before going in to the doctor’s office to get the full picture of my situation. 12 months of chemotherapy and amputation of my leg above the knee. Wild to think that is 35 years ago. I have all the original Metallica stuff on vinyl which I bought in the 80s. I attended the very last show Cliff Burton played before his bus accident death in 1986 six months prior to my cancer diagnosis. Ride the lightning was my favourite album for several years in the late 80s and this is one of many good songs in the album from 1984.

Keep in mind, James was 18-19 years old when he wrote both the majority of the riffs on this album, but almost all the lyrics too! Loved this reaction!!!!

Interesting. In many ways metal is the most complex music of the modern day with the most need of being skilled at writing music. Fast complex drums, fast intricate leads, often great bass and of course all the masterful singers of metal. The genre has the most loyal fans for a reason.

Keep in mind that metal is a HUGE genre. There's a big difference between Sabbath and, say Black Metal bands. I'll also say that a lot of metal comes off as almost masturbatory with multiple heavy guitars overlayered competing with relentlessly pounding drums and harsh screamed/growled lyrics and excessively long guitar solos that have little or nothing to do with the rest of the song musically. Not say that all or even most metal is like this, but exposure to tacks of that sort can be really off-putting to outsiders and form lasting negative impressions that prejudice how people think of the genre. (There was also that whole silly panic over satanism with Sabbath and other bands, though that's another issue.)
Many have tried but you cannot kill the metal.

Okay, hun, when you stated your preconceptions of Metal music you’re not alone. Thank you for taking the time to listen, understand, and judge for yourself. Metal music has sooo much to offer behind very energetic sounds. I like that you started with Metallica but I don’t think you’re ready for DISPOSABLE HEROES yet. I’m going to recommend Metallica’s ONE with the video if you can. It provides imagery from an old movie called,”Johnny Get Your Gun,” and is the story of an injured vet. That’s all I’m going to give away so that you can see it. Masterpiece
I'm going to recommend that you also listen to 'One,' but to do it lyrically like you did 'For Whom The Bell Tolls.'
The video works better for 'One' if you are already familiar with the song as it is. Song with lyrics first, then do the music video. Trust me.

Also agree, the music video, whilst it adds a whole new dimension and intensity to the song can be fairly distracting for a first listen.

"Blackened roar, massive roar fills the crumbling sky". One of my favorite lines ever. It conjures up an image of the hugeness of these weapons and how small the soldier would feel. I don't even think a movie with a big budget could show us better.

Good reaction. You mentioned that you had seen images of Metallica playing in front of crowds of 500k, but if that seems wild to you, check out the video of Metallica's Enter Sandmann, live in Moscow. They played in front of 1.6 MILLION people. Absolutely nuts. You should check it out

I remember listening to Metallica as a very young teen and knew they were great, but didn't really understand why. It wasn't til I was older that I had the knowledge and understanding to know why. Their lyrics are amazing and tell such great stories along with the instruments themselves. Metallica is one of those bands that everyone needs to listen to so they can understand what great music is and the incredible story/message it can tell.
I love seeing someone finally understand something that has been so very important to the lives of millions of people, METAL!

For bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden (2 of best bands EVER), can/should start with studio version first, BUT you HAVE to then watch it LIVE ... great metal bands are MUCH BETTER and INTENSE live ... it's the emotion/aggression/intensity/skill you will see live and the audience interaction ... it's all part of the experience of these bands, their music, and their fans! Maybe do studio version first, then immediately follow with live version of the song (at least with Metallica and Iron Maiden)... you will appreciate it SO MUCH MORE then. Take care and nice job :)
I agree with doing studio version first, doing so makes you appreciate the live versions more. Plus the studio version has all of the layers added to it so you get all the intended sounds for a first listen, then you can see how it translates to a live performance

Syed… the whole heavy metal scene passed me by, as I was in my thirties by then and listening to other genres. And I too thought metal was just all bombast and thrash You know when I truly discovered Metallica? At the age of 72 about three years ago! Reaction channels opened up so many new genres for me. And yes, Metallica are great musicians snd I love James’ voice and his vocal style. What I love about metal is the heavy bottom end..the bass just vibrates through you. Another amazing song by them is One…or my favorite….Enter Sandman. But then, that seems to be everyone’s favorite. I don’t know enough if their catalogue to be more original. .

If you want to hear some amazing singing you should check out the song Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden from the "Beast over Hammersmith" live performance in 1982. There's a live video version.
I grew up in the 70's-80's and as a young teen I liked classic rock only and hated rap music. Then I accepted metal after a friend introduced me to Metallica and finally in the 90's I appreciated rap music lol. We all can learn to appreciate different styles of music once we open up and listen to it!
I'm a classic rock and metal guy too and never liked or could get into rap, but early 90's hip-hop is actually pretty cool.
The "guitar riff" that people call it, is actually a bass line. Cliff Burton was one of the first matallica bassists and he played bass with a lot of effects that's why it's sounds like a normal guitar.
He wrote this whole song

This fellow gives me hope that Metal will persevere thru the drudgery of today's music. This guy seems very intelligent and I think his intelligence will make him want to explore more music in this genre. It's not mindless noise, like so many assume it is. They don't sing about killing puppies and stomping rabbits. There lyrics contain depth and invite you into another world. I can't see shallowness being fulfilling to this guy. I loved his take on the atmosphere of the music and the creative writing in the lyrics. This young man has earned another subscriber.Well done brother. I think Pantera would be a nice choice as another band to listen to. Songs like Walk and Mouth for War are always a great introduction to Pantera.

One of the best reactions I have ever had the ultimate pleasure of watching. I'm a Grandma and I grew up with Metallica.
However, this was one of the best if not the best reactions that I have ever seen. Period. Phenomenal.
Of course Metal music is not noise, it's the opposite. It's energy. it's brilliant notes and compositions, qualified musicians with ability to play complex and difficult melodies.

Love the video mate, i was listening to this as a teen and still today i get chills. You mentioned early on about how it sets a scene even before the lyrics kick in and regarding that i wanna direct you to their sing "Orion", it has no lyrics at all yet it will take you on one hell of a journey. The song "One" by them has all the imagery that music can produce. At one point the music takes on a staccato beat that conjures up a soldier's march and then machine gun fire.
It's the most "metal" moment and you're unconsciously banging your head the whole time.

@@klmrk9961 in a lot of cases, I'd agree with you, even initially in this case. When it first came out, it was chopped for time. Saw a version that kept the same time. To me it really enhances the haunting quality of the song and brings a completely different experience.
Hell yeah dude, great job with the research in the initial bit. You also 100% understand the spirit of metal, which is sort of an intersection between passion and imagination.
Out of all the reaction videos I watch, you are just about the only one that nailed it with Metallica. A lot of them just focus on the lyrics and don't really hear the body of the song and feel what it means for the storytelling aspect of it. You explained it spot on and to do it before the lyrics even started has definitely earned you a like and sub from me. Excellent breakdown of the lyrics brother. I’ve been a Metallica fan since the late 80’s. They’re a Phenomenal band and so many of their Lyrics are Really Deep.
Noise with no meaning is the most stereotyping thing I hear all the time about metal music and it couldn't be farther from the truth! I think you need to listen to Fade to Black next for an emotional understanding as well as what makes them shine as magical musicians!
Truth. Not a whole lot of people realize that Metallica is in the Congressional Library thing for the conservation of the arts and Cradle Of Filth received both an award for literature for their lyrics and Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids (I think) is enshrined in a British Museum of Literature and Arts for both lyrics and the musical talent to produce it.

Dude, just keep in mind, that they wrote this song, when they were in their early 20's. Metallica is 1 of the world's most iconic bands in the metal music. The only true rivals of Metallica is, Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osborne, Pink Floyd(Psychedelic rock music), Sting(Pop music), Meatloaf(He has done ballads up to hard rock music), AC/DC(Hard rock music) and just a handful of other artists...
Led Zepplin are better than all these bands

That opening sound is actually the original bassist playing with a guitar effect petal and just killing it. Such a unique talent that has been sorely missed since his WAY to early death.

Wow. I won't lie, I've been a Metallica fan for over a decade, they're my favorite band. But even I haven't caught that the ending sounds like wailing from the soldiers, and the drums bombs! I always just heard it as a sort of intentional chaotic noisy part, to illustrate a culmination of the song, never thought deeply about it. But your interpretation blew my mind. Subbed
I'm gonna preface this by saying you have absolutely earned a subscription from me. This probably one of the most honest and intelligent reactions I've seen. Your analysis is well thought out, and you pick up on themes and background details really well. That said, I think metal is gonna be a good genre for you. There's so much to pick up in this genre. Iron Maiden has some great songs that have a ton of detail and texture to them, if that makes any sense. Once you get a good feel for Metallica, I'd highly recommend Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden, but until then, check out Metallica's Master of Puppets.

I love watching these reaction videos because I’ve been into Metallica a while but this one was different in a amazing way a lot of effort was put into it and they way you described it was epic.
I found Metallica at the age of 13 in 1984. I was hooked in the first minute. I’ve seen them at least a dozen times live over the years. Incredible music and lyrics. Love them especially their early albums.
My bass player and I went out and bought two albums in 1984 . I bought this one. Back in those days , The only way to find new music was to drop some money at the record store . Came Back ,rolled a joint and dropped the needle. We had no idea what we were in store for . It was epic !!. . High as a kite . I left the band but my buddy went on to be the bass player for Iced Earth . Before that . Opened for Poison , Fates Warning , Crimson Glory , Yngwie . This music is nearly 40 years ago .
I remember the anticipation of this second album coming out in the Bay Area! Not only from a newer sounding production standpoint, but experimenting with new amplification namely Mesa Boogie prototypes that no one were using other than Santana & Prince and a couple others. It was an extremely pivotal album for Metallica to unleash, and nothing in their catalog in terms of crunch even matches it!

My favorite song by this amazing band.... I know people generally classify Metallica as thrash metal, but for some reason, in my head I always call them "classical metal". Their compositions, particularly the ones written by Cliff Burton (R.I.P.) are on par with Beethoven and Mozart, just with metal instruments.

I grew up in the 80's and listing to Metallica on the lake at night off this rock pier. I was in second grade. Listening to Master of Puppets. Looking back on it I can't believe we didn't get kicked out of the park because we had it on full blast at midnight. Imagine the crashing waves and the moon adding to the atmosphere of the music. it was magical. Metallica, Megadeth, Trouble, Queen's Ryche, Fate's Warning, Anthrax, so much great metal. It was awesome seeing your reaction and it was like reliving the wonder again. Thanks for that.
