  • The Google Home Without WiFi
    If you've ever wondered what happens when you turn off the WiFi with a Google Home, Google Home Mini, or Google Home Hub, then here it is. If you've ever wondered what happens when you have WiFi but the internet is out, well then, here it is!
    The Google Home, Mini, or Hub are all pretty useless once WiFi and/or the internet goes out. Really, they behave exactly the same way and there's nothing you can do. Let's just leave it there and let you watch the video. Good luck if the internet ever dies #googlehome owners!

    0:53 really I appreciate that, otherwise my damn Google assistant on my phone would pop up while I'm watching this lol.
    It's good to know that the free Google home mini I got is essentially a brick without internet, because I really don't want an active mic to Google right next to my bed. I guess I will try and sell it.

    Can you do this with multiple devices though? I've had it work with my Chrome Cast, and I've had it work with my Home Mini, but I can't get it to to work with both devices on the same hotspot. It says both are connect, but it will only let me use 1 out of the 2 devices.

    How can I do this to my laptop? I don't have another device and the hotspot will disconnect once it asks me to connect to wifi. It takes me to connect to cellular data for some reason.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 года назад +1

      Yep, that's why you need two devices. If your laptop can make a hotspot, you're good (but I don't know how), and there's no app really that you can do this with.
      You can try Bluestacks and then using the GH app on that, but honestly...I haven't had much success. Get a friend to come over, make the hotspot with the name and credentials you're going to use with your phone and then you should be able to get this done.

      @@AutomateYourLife Pixel 2. My problem was I'm in an apartment where wifi is provided, but requires a log-in page, which google mini does not support. That's fine because I just wanted to use the mini as a bluetooth player from my phone. However, in order to set up the device at all, including making the "pair bluetooth" option to show up at all, the mini needed internet. So, per your instruction, I tethered the mini to my Pixel 2 (on the same one where I'm wrangling the app), set up the bluetooth, then disconnected tether.

    I used to old telephones, an original Motorola G tethered to an Asus router, and a Nokia E65 3g capable only feature phone, tethered to a TP link router for the internet of things, which has two echo dots one Google home five sockets and two lights, on it.
    I top the internet of things SIM up once every three months the normal internet I top up every 28 days. I think probably it's the lack of sophistication of the connecting device which makes the top-up last longer, a good thing about using a telephone to connect is the Motorola you can go to the website and see how much data you have left, sometimes I have run out of data and I just plug in my normal Motorola G6 phone to the Asus until it's time to buy some more.

    it DOES NOT allow you set up google home or device if the Hotspot is on the same phone as the Google Home App.
    It forces you to switch on Wi-Fi on your phone to search for a Wi-Fi network.
    If you switch on Wi-Fi, your phone disables it's Hot-Spot (because a phone cant have hotspot and wifi running at the same time).
    So you need to broadcast the hotspot from a DIFFERENT device, and NOT the one which has the Google Home App

    Great video Yoof! Thanks. Seeing as I can't get you on Twitter. May I ask you an unrelated question that I just can't solve?
    A modern light stand with 2 separate bulbs and both individually switched. I have put genetics smart GU10 little spot lights in them. They run off the ubiquitous Smart Life app. Smart Life let's me name and command the bulbs separately which is fine. It also let's me group them both as one entity (group) with a new group name. I can only use the group option with the physical app but not voice. This has to be a Google Home limitation doesn't it? I have done much searching but can't find a way to group bulbs in Google home with in a room. The only group options seems to be the room. Or am I missing something (every chance. Lol). All I want is the option of operating the lamp stand as a single unit with voice? Many thanks Yoof. Thanks for reading 👌

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  5 лет назад

      Hey Dene - I don’t know what’s up on Twitter! Did I miss something you did???
      Anyways, two ways:
      1. Yep, a room grouping.
      2. Create two routines. One for on and one for off. Use the routine to say whatever you want to put the devices in that group.
      That’s it for now really! I’ve been finding myself using routines a lot to create natural speak patterns, but it can limit things like the percent control capability. When I want that, I put my hub/home and the lights in the same room and just ask for the lights to go to whatever I’d like.

      Most of the time you still need wifi in order to get that to happen, but what I'd do is set it up as a BT speaker within range of WiFi and then see what happens when you drive away. You're also likely to need to keep the power on 100% of the time...or it'll lose that connection. Again, stay tuned!

      @@AutomateYourLife I just discovered openHab which seems to be exactly what I need.
      However, I might wanna connect some smart things, such as my tv, to that same router AND to the internet. Connecting your tv to both, if even possible, would introduce a liability to the entire network. How would you go about this? A tool (such as some sort of tv controller) pointed at the tv and connected to the router?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 года назад

      Well I think you're asking someone who think OpenHab and some of those other options are a bit too much work for the benefits they provide.
      But if I'm trying to create a totally secure network for a smart home, it's only wired components and I don't connect a TV.
