It is good to see one of the BBC’s own pundits from there award winning unparalleled coverage of Wimbledon in John McEnroe.Well done Australian 🇦🇺 open on this superb documentary and well done to Australian 🇦🇺 tv
Default was fair, great documentary. I was ball boy for him at the Australian indoors in Sydney and he yelled at me, one of the highlights of my life 😂
McEnroe was absolutely right in 1985 when he argued with the Australian Open referee to have his match moved to an adjacent court because the main center court was too wet and dangerously slippery for the players. Typical of the officials, they refused to move that match to a drier court. And he was right when he objected to the chair umpire's call of a let when his opponent failed to return McEnroe's serve and the linesman wrongly made an out call AFTER the opponent failed to successfully return McEnroe's serve! The chair umpire should have awarded that point to McEnroe!
Yes and the arrogant tournament director even admitted that John was right, in the interview. The tournament should have to work to a minimum standard or get sued by the players.
The difference in people is summed up when the tournament director says that John went over and harassed the line judge (and yes he did do that, and yes he did deserve a warning) in order that calls would go in his favour. No, no no. And a minute or two later (in the doc) McEnroe said back to Armstrong 'and you think she's going to rule in my favour after me doing that? What kind of mentality is that?''. It's a small minded mentality on their parts John, and you're exactly right. They haven't a clue. It's very disappointing but that's human nature in some cases. It was written all over the tournament director's face, in the closing minutes, how happy he was to 'ruin John's chance to win the open'. And that glee and resentment is largely due to his opinionated and erroneous position about McEnroe.
In the infamous "You can't be serious" incident, why does nobody criticize the umpire. There was an absolute explosion of chalk but the umpire said it spread off the line. Monumental incompetence from that umpire.
I've never been a fan of Mcenroe's, but Jesus, some of those calls in his match against Pernfors were absolutely ridiculous. The lines people were clearly out to get him.
Mac understood the whole thing was show business. He brought more eyes to tennis than any other player up until that point, it was no longer a country club gentleman sport. The prize money got bigger and bigger, the audience hyper expanded, everyone was playing tennis.
I think John would have behaved like that whether the cameras were on him or not. Jimmy Connors understood the showmanship better. He worked the crowd, but he wasn't as hostile as Mac. In fairness to both, the officials made some really bad calls, but before electric line calling, that was going to happen.....
Even that GOAT race between Rafa, Fed, and Djoker was showbiz. Now that two had retired, I don't know if any fan but Djokovic's care who the GOAT is. Djokovic won the most Slams, yes, but to have a documentary like this, you can't just talk about the number of Slam wins. There has to be a story.
@@tomsd8656 Novak has almost all the records now....slams won, slams finals, salm semis, slam quarters reached, most MAsters titles, most YECs, highest winning percentage, most weeks at number one by far, most big titles....the only two he's missing is most matches won and most tournaments won. connors has both records, adn Fed is ahead in both as well.
Huge Mac fan, had no issue with him being disqualified. Was disappointing as a fan, but there was many times before that it should have happened. Oz open stood up to him and followed the rules and put him in his place. Only had himself to blame.
that was pretty good. poor Mac. he was his own worst enemy. being a huge fan of his I have always wondered how many more tournaments he would have won had he been able to control himself. one of life's unanswerable mysteries.
As painful as the default may have been at the time, the umpire was totally right. McEnroe’s behavior went too far and against such a calm and forgiving umpire. So John had to pay the price for his bad behavior. He needed it much sooner.
The difference in people is summed up when the tournament director says that John went over and harassed the line judge (and yes he did do that, and yes he did deserve a warning) in order that calls would go in his favour. It's a shame he isn't primarily remembered for his wonderful game. His behaviour was absolutely horrendous, and there are so many great matches of his that are borderline unwatchable because he wouldn't keep his mouth shut. But ultimately, that's how he chose to be on a tennis court. He has only himself to blame 🤷🏼♀️
Mikael Pernfors was my favorite player since his amazing French Open few years ago. He could have been a serious top ten player. Amazing skills, did what others couldn’t do… you must see (if it’s possible because the video is horrible) his incredible point against Jim Courier. Nothing you’ll ever see again.
Goes without saying that McEnroe's performance during the default was shocking. But the way he ignored Pernfors at the end of that match was absolutely appalling - it breaks the unspoken code between the players that the calls are the responsibility of the umpire and not themselves. McEnroe was acting as if it was Pernfors' fault.
Love Mac. His touch and ability to take pace off the ball around the net made him uniquely formidable. Given that he used only a continental grip he never realized the increased power of the evolution to graphite that players like Lendl did. His post match comments frequently revealed his dissatisfaction with that fact. (Especially Lendl, lol) To his credit, he acquired an sense of humor about himself that was not apparent in his playing days.
It's interesting how different players would deal with McEnroe's antics. Jimmy Connors, no stranger to those games himself, would walk up to him and tell him to shut up and try and get the crowd on his side with little jokes like wagging his finger at McEnroe. Bjorn Borg would turn his back. Ivan Lendl would start hitting the ball at McEnroe 😂
In 2004 i went to Superset which featured hawkeye and John McEnroe (US) v Andrew Murray. For the record i was amazed how many times McEnroe got the call wrong. Andy Murray was beaten 6-0 by Mac. 😮
@@danschannel169thankfully the truth was that contrary to what he may have believed, he got calls wrong too and used that as an excuse to engage in unsportsmanlike behavior.

John was a spoiled rich kid. When he got defaulted, it was very good for him....AND tennis. The legitimacy of the game needed to be restored. Gamesmanship had gone too far.
@sdfswords. Actually Borg and Connors created a huge increase in the public's interest in men's pro tennis BEFORE John McEnroe arrived on the tennis scene!
@doemehunatt. I agree that the odds of McEnroe defeating Lendl at the 1990 Australian Open if McEnroe had not been defaulted against Pernfors and had gone on to defeat Pernfors, were not very good. McEnroe would have had to have played absolutely superbly in order to defeat Lendl there on that Rebound Ace surface and in 1990 McEnroe was simply not the brilliant player that he was in 1984 when he was at the absolute apex of his pro tennis career!
If he just kept his mouth shut, and stopped moaning, he would have been remembered for the great player he was, instead he built himself this aura of tennis bad boy that served him well after he retired, becoming the personality he is today and what people most associate Mc Enroe with are his tantrums on courts around the world... Having said that, just think at today's players, in particular the big 3, the one that sticks out the most, Roger Federer, class, elegance, fair play, his record on court is immaculate, he kept his mouth shut and won 3 times as much as Mc Enroe, Jannik Sinner today, absolute dominance, absolute silence on court, those are the players I admire and those are the records I would like to be associated with as a tennis player.
He'd been allowed to get away with it for too long, so one can understand his surprise. However, what he said was worthy of a default at any level. First time I've seen the crowd booing the girls playing the next match. 'Happy Slam?' Yikes...
To show Mcnamee being proud of denying Ken Farrar recognition on centre court just sums up what little class Australian tennis has. Really shameful. Mcenroe was a disgusting man child bully, he thinks it was all quite funny, I think his legacy was destroyed by it.
