5:46 Björn Skifs (in the band "Blue Swede") is another Eurovision artist, but he did Eurovision _after_ the success with "Hooked on a Feeling". Representing Sweden in 1978 and 1981.
ABBA's performance at Eurovision 1974 with "Waterloo" is one of the most iconic and consequential performances in pop music history. It marked the beginning of a new era in pop music, catapulting ABBA into megastardom and establishing Sweden as a pop music powerhouse, the third biggest music exporter behind only the US and the UK.
Their music have also become boring and generic overtime...
@@foryou7673 By definition, music cannot "become boring and generic overtime."
@@NYAndreas it can when everything sound similar
@@foryou7673 Nobody can tell you of course what is "boring" to you. But the idea that ABBA's music all sounded the same is pretty out of touch. They are actually known for having a wider range of styles than most bands. ABBA produced songs that were hard rock, psychedelic rock, bubble gum pop, sophisticated "California-coast" style pop, schlager style, pop style ballads, European cabaret, style songs, Spanish songs (that became hits in Latin speaking countries), Folk, R&B/Funk, they had their disco period, new wave, even proto-techno. And that's leaving plenty out. If you bought an ABBA album, you never knew what you were going to hear next, and that was by design by the song-writers.
If anyone wants to listen to the only other Swedish band around the same time with a rich enough sound to compare with ABBA, go look at Adolphson & Falk. They may only have made songs in Swedish and never have reached outside of Sweden but they have one of the most interesting sounds and lyrics of the time.
I would also recommend checking out the 1970 album Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby by Doris (ft. Loffe Carlsson on the drums). The titular song sounds incredibly modern, and You Never Come Closer is essentially proto-acid jazz with strong psychadelia vibes. It wasn't a commercial success, but it has become a cult classic, even being sampled by Madlib for Quasimoto's Closer.
@@Arat1t1 I love that album, very good songs over all.
We can see ABBA dna all over modern pop. They really are geniuses.
I hope there will be more videos about the entries into the contest ..those have always been so fun!
Great analysis, thank you!
An important note regarding point 4: a if not the reason they created their costumes like that is due to the swedish tax laws. They would have to pay taxes on their outfits if they were for common use, so they created outfits that were clearly not for common daily use. There you have it people: as always in history, tax evasion is the main driver for the development of our society!
Exellent analysis! Thanks..
What a great video. AGAIN
This series makes me long for a video version of the podcast.
BEST ⭐ POP ⭐ MUSIC ⭐ EVER!

❤️🇨🇱🤗👍
Abba's combination of happy and sad is a bit like sweet sour taste, creating a field of tension and depth.
Wonderful analysis, can you please analyze Israel song? It and Ukraine song are my favorites this year.
Best band ever
Who says Arbour for ABBA?? Freaking me out.
I absolutely love these videos but I’m going to have to beg Mark to stop pronouncing it “Ahbbah”. It’s the æ sound for both or at the very least the first A. Wrather gets it right! Please Mark, I’m on my misophonic knees
No, it's not pronounced ÄBBÄ. You can hear Björn saying ABBA att 2:58.
@@jsoderbahuh? Bjorn's not in this video, that's Michael B Tretow
"Ahbbah" is the Swedish way to pronounce it
@@jsoderbafirstly that’s not Björn and secondly Tretow didn’t pronounce it with a long ahh sound like Mark does. It’s maybe not æ but it’s not a long drawn out ahh sound, it’s short and clipped.
First!
A-has Take on me was more famous than any song ABBA ever had :o
That's absolutely not true.
@@saladspinner3200 Explain yourself...
@@saladspinner3200 Take on me is one of the most recognizable songs of all time, and has played an important role in pop culture in comparison to ABBAs
@@foryou7673 That's just one song, ABBA as institution has had far more impact on culture in it's totality. It still permeates to this day.
@@saladspinner3200 take on me is in the top ten of the most recognizable songs of all time, Sweden isn't even in the top 15 :D
C'mon, all Cha-cha-cha fans were told last year that Loreen's win and Sweden hosting ESC this year had nothing to do with the 50th anniversary of ABBA's win. So can we just then forget about ABBA pls?😋
I was devastated when Finland lost, but to be fair abba are a genuinely great band
@@kaitlins2934 They are, I just prefer not to hear about them in the next 2 weeks if I may...
