"Last time, we shared our thoughts on the grand final of Eurovision 2024, after that we needed a week or two to decompress." Literally the realest sentence I've heard this entire Eurovision season
@@overthinkingit I’m currently sat on the tarmac at Gatwick Airport on a flight to Tallinn because they invited me to their album launch tomorrow night!
I'm gonna give you one final nugget of trivia! The BBC, the British broadcaster in Eurovision, also has a long-running soap opera set in London called EastEnders. Every single year they use the UK's upcoming Eurovision entry as background music during episodes of EastEnders. It's like subliminal messaging! And this year, Olly even made a cameo in an episode where all the characters wished him good luck. It was a little cringe and awkward if I'm honest 😂 I even heard Dizzy in an episode this week...
Your analysis of Zari was phenomenal. So many commentators dismissed the video and the song as being a "mess" or "chaotic", but you went to great lengths to contextualise it, explain its meaning, introduce the work of Satti, and tie it all together in an accessible manner. After first watching it, I genuinely wondered whether MA-RI-NA was running your channel behind the scenes 😜
Guys, you make Eurovision even more special than what it already is! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the pure entertainment you've provided. See you in 2025. PS. As an Australian, yep, we're very proud of Bluey.
Not a novel, but Slavenka Drakulić’s Cafe Europa is a really intriguing read that won't necessarily teach you about Yugoslav history per se but instead will paint a really fascinating sociocultural picture of post-socialist Eastern Europe in general and will enrich your understanding of (almost) current sociopolitical dimensions of Europe from a Croatian perspective.
okay, so “almost current” is a bit of a stretch. it was written decades ago, but as an Eastern European, I still find this book incredibly relevant, especially in the way it discusses differing European mentalities
I wonder that the Analphabetic 14:30 usage was the same idea as Luna using the Rook and the whole chess analogy because despite it's being called Rook in english, it's called a variant of "Tower" in almost all of the participating eurovision countries Languages
Sorry I can't post the link in here. Its the live version he played in Canada. Its not officially out yet so I don't know if its on the studio version. If you check r/joost someone's videod it there.
Appreciate the research into this channel. Normally would be very concerned about Americans lecturing me about Eurovision but everything is methotical and in depth and I can feel your appreciation for Eurovision so kudos and looking forward to more in 2025 ❤️❤️❤️
In my eyes, everything is forgiven. You had soooo much data to go through, from countries that are totally different...and you truly did an amazing job! I was so happy and excited when I discovered this channel and I dare to say: primarily cause of your existence, I hope Eurovision will go on! Looking forward to seeing you next year! Sending you and everyone reading this lots of love from Croatia P.S. Congratulations on the new arrival! Hope she'll be born before September 23rd because she'll be a Virgo as myself (not that I give a sh*t about horoscope, but it's a...fun fact?! 😉)
Discovering this channel has been one of the best things that came out of this year's Eurovision experience for me. So happy to have found you guys, and the fact that you're so open to learning and sharing about the amazing layers and complexity that is eurosvision-related-topics is *chefs kiss*. Thank you for a great season!
Happy to have been a small part of the community helping out this year. Would've joined in last year but I only really got into using discord this year so, you know :) Good luck going forward and already looking forward to the podcast on Monday as well as any Eurovision madness that comes next.
Hey, thanks for the mention! Here's my recommendation for a summer reading about Yugoslavia. The two novels: "Fording the Stream of Consciousness" by Dubravka Ugrešić and "How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed" by Slavenka Drakulić. Bonus: This one isn't related to Yugoslavia, but it’s about the Baba Yaga myth (known as Babaroga or Baba Roga in the post-Yugoslav space): "Baba Yaga Laid an Egg" by Slavenka Drakulić.
The way you pronounce Abba, falls down on that first syllable. That “ah” sound should not sound like the dental hygienist is working close to the back of your throat. The sound is closer to when you finally have a cool drink on a hot day (while reading that YA book on Eastern Europe). We won’t give up on you Matt.
Sorry. The above is more negative than I intended. It was just I really wanted to promote the video to all the ABBA fan outlets (as I love both), but I knew the first criticism would be the pronunciation of the band name. Interestingly, you get it more right when you say ABBAtar (as the word avatar has the correct vowel).
I rarely comment, but I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all these video essays for me to obsess and fangirl over and use as source to bombard my friends with endless amounts of trivia. This Eurovision season has been so heartbreaking and I'm honestly so glad it's over. At this point, I'm not sure if I'll even watch next year's Eurovision. But what I do know is that I'll definitely watch your videos! And by the way, I'm really happy you corrected your mistakes in such a thorough way, in my opinion, that's one of the highest levels of credibility a source can have. I wish you so much luck with your personal goals this year, congratulations for the baby and good luck with the house! See you next year!
A huge thank you to the Overthinking It team from my wife and I here in Australia! We love your nuanced and hilarious videos. Eurovision wouldn't be as enjoyable without you guys. Take a break and all the best for the new year!

I totally disagree, it would also be spelled G:son, but the G has to stand for a name that you pronounce with "Dji". If for example Ludwig Göransson changed his last name to G:son, it would be pronounced like Matt B did.

I didn’t know you guys only posted during Eurovision ‘season’. I had unsubscribed and missed all your videos this year till the finals video popped up on my feed. I was so disappointed. Your videos helped this old American be really engaged in Eurovision last year. Although I watched other Eurovision channels, it wasn’t the same. See you next year. I’m definitely not unsubscribing again.
My family thoroughly enjoys your channel. I loved getting some background on both of you here. Congratulations on the Baby!!! Buying a house is easy and fun, lol.
Matt & Matt & friends: THANK YOU for all the effort you’ve put into making these amazing videos. Eurovision 2024 was a hell of a ride. The best part: I found this channel. 👏🏻💙
I have greatly enjoyed a number of your episodes this year. I am Dutch and generally not that interested in Eurovision, but obviously Joost Klein happened and his work demanded my interest. I have work experience with child services in the Netherlands and I work with students now. What seems whacky at the service, gave me a gur feeling of brutally honest depiction of loss and stalled development. I had to do a lot of digging into older interviews, get into lyrics etc to gain useful context. It was hard for me, it must have been sooo hard for you, but you nailed it. It is always worth trying to interpret artistic work from that artist's context. I usually feel that way about the great classical composers, literary aurhors, etc etc etc, but you definitely opened my view for ESC acts as well. Thanks, and see you next time. In whichever form or frequency fits you, you owe us nothing. Your well being and your families come first.
Now knowing about Siberian Money Boss I feel like Nendest... is the equivalent of if Australia sent an entry themed around Democracy Manifest or the chk chk boom girl
My favourite video this year was the Marina Satti video. I usually have this sort of video in the background while gaming, cooking or working. That video made me stop what I was doing and restart the video so I could give it my full undivided attention
I find it fascinating that many of the mistakes you guys did resulted from just being from a different continent. With the internet making us feel so connected, it really shows how different points of view can change ones perception. Kudos to not only being pretty accurate nevertheless, but also correcting your mistakes in such an exhaustive way. That being said, your new map seems to still have a few "mistakes": Türkiye, North Macedonia and Czechia still show the old name and I can't seem to find San Marino on it :D Also, not showing Kosovo and Herzegovina being shortened to just an "H" is kind of weird imo. Congrats on the Baby!
congrats on everything you accomplished this year!! eurovision stocks, as well as "video essay where guy explains things you never really learned about but still say 'huh that's kind of interesting'" stocks are always rising, so the channel can only go up from here :)
Hi Matt Belinkie, re a book about the war in the Balkans, I recommend Paper Planes by Allayne L. Webster. Yes, it is written for YA but honestly everyone should read it.
While i don't doubt it is a good book, probably note it down after writing this, Matt B asked about Yugoslavia from before the war & after the war... (sorry ;-) The country during Tito's reign, the 70s & 80s to be more precise. It is rather curious that westerners could holiday there together with people from eastern Europe. And the story about Tito's letter to Stalin is simply marvelous. 🙂
I really enjoyed reading The Bridge over the Drina. It has that sweep of centuries that really gets behind and under how the folks there have come to see and think about their neighbors. Written by Yugoslav Nobel Prize awarded writer, Ivo Andric, I feel that’s definitely an “@overthinkingit” type book at a slender 314pages in paperback. [if anyone from or living in the region has a better recommendation, please share]
Thank you Overthinking Eurovision for another great year of research and entertainment! Your page is my favourite ESC related platform. Your videos are so educational and fun to watch and I really appreciate the amount of work you put into them. Can’t wait for next year, and congratulations Matt for the upcoming baby girl🎉 much love from Israel❤🇮🇱
Since you finished the video with "meow cat, please meow back" I will assume that the "we needed time to decompress" in the beginning was also RIM TIM TAGI DIM inspired ;) Well played, greetings from Croatia! :)
Oh, I’m gonna miss you guys! Only discovered this channel after ESC 2024 was over but think I have watched most of your videos from this year and some from the years before. I really enjoy your content which speaks to me a lot because it’s a nice mix of well researched, well presented “journalistic documentary quality” content, goofy humor and compassion. Good luck with new house and new baby - meow from Denmark!
Loved the "Overthinking Eurovision" series this year, and as a parting gift, while eagerly awaiting next year's videos, I'll provide one last "well actually": In ABBA's native Swedish, their name is pronounced closer to how Belinkie says it, although, with a slightly faster 'b' sound in the middle. Belinkie's pronunciation sounds more like 'abah', while it should be 'abbah'. The band members themselves pronounce it this way, with no 'æ' sound whatsoever, when speaking both English and Swedish. I'd say Belinkie is more right than the commenter on this one.
11:15 - Only lived in Yugoslavia for the first 2 years of my life so I'm not really an expert, but from what my parents and grandparents tell me, "Eastern Germany with better beaches" sounds about right. There was a lot less oppression mind you and most of the population wasn't working for the secret police, but you'd still have situations where two guys would get drunk, throw a glass bottle at the mandatory Red Star monument every town needed to have, and lose their jobs the next morning.
Thank you for all your work this year. It's been absolutely the weirdest Eurovision year of my dozen watching (in some often unfun ways) but your videos always brought me back to what a unique, meaningful thing Eurovision is. Congratulations on the fourthcoming baby and house! I hope everything goes wonderfully with both!
Marko’s brother plays in Mono Inc., and they are quite big on the dark German scene (together with Lord of the Lost). Although you might have told this, not sure at this point. And I have no idea about Yugoslavia books, but when I’m in Croatia I drink their Vranac wine on a daily basis. Good luck finding that abroad!
Congratulations! I love the content of your channel, couse overthinking Eurovision it's what I do half of the year! Your work is so complex and educational and funny in the same time. Anyway the old map was quite disturbing, new is much better, but I need to say North Macedonia is not FYROM anymore;)
I actually did notice that, was hoping no one else would. :) I'm really having trouble finding a totally up-to-date map that looks cool. Will work on it over the summer.
@overthinkingit Also, I think "Czechia" is officially preferred over "Czech Rep" and Ukrainians prefers "Kyiv" over "Kiev" (the latter being derived from Russian). And I think it looks like Bornholm (an island which is part of Denmark) is colored as if it belongs to Poland. Also Kosovo. What if you just had a satellite-view map, without any of the political borders or names?
@@overthinkingit probably a good idea to not find an individual map, but a workflow to make the current state of things look good with some filters maybe? so it can be updated when stuff changes.
Hello all! I will happily recommend you a book you should read if you want a digestable exploration of Yugoslavia's society, culture, mythmaking and history. The President Shop by Vesna Marić. Also, if you happen to be in the mood to listen rather than read, Remembering Yugoslavia is a fantastic English-language podcast about the country.

We (sure) know nothing about (this) succulent Chinese meal.
Congrats on your baby Matt ❤. And thank you peeps for your amazing videos 😊
My favourite video this year was the Marina Satti video.
I usually have this sort of video in the background while gaming, cooking or working. That video made me stop what I was doing and restart the video so I could give it my full undivided attention
Still on a high from the Joost video. Thank you guys for all the overthinking and the effort to package that overthinking!!
I find it fascinating that many of the mistakes you guys did resulted from just being from a different continent. With the internet making us feel so connected, it really shows how different points of view can change ones perception. Kudos to not only being pretty accurate nevertheless, but also correcting your mistakes in such an exhaustive way.
That being said, your new map seems to still have a few "mistakes": Türkiye, North Macedonia and Czechia still show the old name and I can't seem to find San Marino on it :D
Also, not showing Kosovo and Herzegovina being shortened to just an "H" is kind of weird imo.
Congrats on the Baby!
I subbed this year and I cant believe I didn't know about your channel before! Thanks so much, you two are legends 🙌
congrats on everything you accomplished this year!! eurovision stocks, as well as "video essay where guy explains things you never really learned about but still say 'huh that's kind of interesting'" stocks are always rising, so the channel can only go up from here :)
Hi Matt Belinkie, re a book about the war in the Balkans, I recommend Paper Planes by Allayne L. Webster. Yes, it is written for YA but honestly everyone should read it.
Thanks for the tip. YA is perfect for “lighter” summer reading.
While i don't doubt it is a good book, probably note it down after writing this, Matt B asked about Yugoslavia from before the war & after the war... (sorry ;-)
The country during Tito's reign, the 70s & 80s to be more precise.
Best Eurovision videos hands down. Thanks for a wonderful season.
Bravo, bravo, bravo!
Best of luck to all of you in all of the adventures this year, we'll be right here waiting ❤!
"Meow cat, please meow back" really was a cultural reset wasn't it
Since you finished the video with "meow cat, please meow back" I will assume that the "we needed time to decompress" in the beginning was also RIM TIM TAGI DIM inspired ;)
Well played, greetings from Croatia! :)
Congratulations!! 🎉 So happy for you!
Congratulations, M. and K.!
And thank you for sharing all your work and research with the world.
best esc channel
We’ll wait for you guys next year!
Gracias from Uruguay.
Please, could you do more videos through out the year? There are many past Eurovision entries that could be covered... If you don't, see you in 2025!
Thank you for the amazing videos! Meow!! See you next year!
This video made me emotional; thank you all so much for the videos!
The egg in the Finnish esc entry is a reference to a Finnish video game
Great job Mat, thank you for the fixed misstake video.
@@lemurunc you're right, but Kosovo is not yet fully established country. I guess this map is getting too political;)
@@overthinkingit probably a good idea to not find an individual map, but a workflow to make the current state of things look good with some filters maybe? so it can be updated when stuff changes.
@@alessazoe I'm really close to just using a picture of Wrather's dog, easy peasy.
Thanks to the Overthinking team and the discord team for everything this year!
Thank you ❤ cant wait for next year
Congratulation to all of you and thank you for bringing me lots of eurovision knowledge every year, I really appreciate it
Great video! And congratulations Matt and Kristina! 👶
i got into eurovision this year, maybe not the best choice but hey, there was a nice variety of songs and looking forward to switzerland 2025!
I love this channel so much. Thanks for all y'all do. Congrats on the baby and good luck on the house purchase!
Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your daughter Matt!! Meow meow 😻
Thank you for providing some background audio for whenever I made ESC 24 fanart lol, gonna miss you guys
