What We Learned From Overthinking Eurovision 2024

- Whoops, I misspelled my own email address in this video, haha. It's belinkie at overthinking it dot com, sorry for the confusion.
Look, I have no idea how to pronounce ABBA anymore. It's the most popular musical group on the planet, this should not be a challenge, but it's really breaking my brain for some reason. I think I basically need to channel Fran Drescher from The Nanny and make sure that first "A" sound is nasally as hell, right? Like, less "The Queen" and more Queens.
ANYWAY thank you to everyone for watching these things, I'm off to listen to E-Rotic's entire back catalogue.

"Last time, we shared our thoughts on the grand final of Eurovision 2024, after that we needed a week or two to decompress."
Literally the realest sentence I've heard this entire Eurovision season
One more time for all the good times.. but fr though im still on that brainrot
RIM TIM TAGI DIGI DIM TIM TIM!! 🎶🎶🎶
Honestly, good on them for recognizing the need for a mental break, _and taking it!_ It's a lot harder than you might anticipate. :)
..but his statement of Eurovision 2025 was soooo true🤩
Post Eurovision depression hits different this year
thanks guys for setting the standard once again (and congratulations on the upcoming new arrival!!!)
Hello Gabe. You've been the most helpful person during Eurovision season. Keep it up.
No one raised the bar as much as yourself, Gabe
Thanks for the kind words! Looking forward to catching up on your channel.
(starts to watch) Wait you met 5miinust and Puuluup??
@@overthinkingit I’m currently sat on the tarmac at Gatwick Airport on a flight to Tallinn because they invited me to their album launch tomorrow night!
I'm gonna give you one final nugget of trivia! The BBC, the British broadcaster in Eurovision, also has a long-running soap opera set in London called EastEnders. Every single year they use the UK's upcoming Eurovision entry as background music during episodes of EastEnders. It's like subliminal messaging! And this year, Olly even made a cameo in an episode where all the characters wished him good luck. It was a little cringe and awkward if I'm honest 😂 I even heard Dizzy in an episode this week...
This is honestly so cute and amazing at the same time haha
ruclips.net/video/3ZDajM50FqE/видео.html
And a fat lot of good it did, too!! 😂😂😂😂😂
The way Matt's eyes glossed over with emotion the MOMENT he mentioned his baby girl! So sweet 🥰 Best of luck with everything!
I still remember the moment he didn't remember Freestyler
Your analysis of Zari was phenomenal. So many commentators dismissed the video and the song as being a "mess" or "chaotic", but you went to great lengths to contextualise it, explain its meaning, introduce the work of Satti, and tie it all together in an accessible manner. After first watching it, I genuinely wondered whether MA-RI-NA was running your channel behind the scenes 😜
Their video made me reconsider her music. After a few listens, I actually started to really like her stuff
I'd like to think that songs can be great and a bit chaotic at the same time - Nemo and Bambie demonstrated that quite well, no? :)
As an Australian (from Brisbane, where Bluey is set), yes, I am very proud of Bluey
Aussie AUSSIE AUSSIE! go the maroons
I have to ask, did you know in Joosts new song luchtballon your video about him was sampled at the end!!
Daym I didn’t realise till you mentioned it wow that’s incredible
I dont get it. Can you poit timecode
Sorry I can't post the link in here. Its the live version he played in Canada. Its not officially out yet so I don't know if its on the studio version. If you check r/joost someone's videod it there.
@@GoldBlackLotusboth bbno$ show and the freshtival before he left the Nederlands, the latter is all Dutch tho be warned
@@user-bx7xt6dp7n if you look up "Freshtival 2024" filmed by hardstyleamersfoort, you can hear it vaguely around the end of the song at the 5: 30 mark :)
Not a novel, but Slavenka Drakulić’s Cafe Europa is a really intriguing read that won't necessarily teach you about Yugoslav history per se but instead will paint a really fascinating sociocultural picture of post-socialist Eastern Europe in general and will enrich your understanding of (almost) current sociopolitical dimensions of Europe from a Croatian perspective.
okay, so “almost current” is a bit of a stretch. it was written decades ago, but as an Eastern European, I still find this book incredibly relevant, especially in the way it discusses differing European mentalities
Guys, you make Eurovision even more special than what it already is! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the pure entertainment you've provided. See you in 2025.
PS. As an Australian, yep, we're very proud of Bluey.
I wonder that the Analphabetic 14:30 usage was the same idea as Luna using the Rook and the whole chess analogy because despite it's being called Rook in english, it's called a variant of "Tower" in almost all of the participating eurovision countries Languages
"Illiterate" may sound as "uncultured", so makes sense to use "analphabetic" for some languages.
Appreciate the research into this channel. Normally would be very concerned about Americans lecturing me about Eurovision but everything is methotical and in depth and I can feel your appreciation for Eurovision so kudos and looking forward to more in 2025 ❤️❤️❤️
Meow from Croatia, glad to hear that at the end ❤
Oh my gosh congratulations Matt and Kristina!!! How exciting!!
Overthinking it uploaded!!!!!
This year was so hectic. I hope for next year to be much better.
I mean, what can I say, Matt Wrather is just hypnotising
This is considerably the best account on RUclips. Thank you Matt, Matt and the whole team. Smashed it
In my eyes, everything is forgiven. You had soooo much data to go through, from countries that are totally different...and you truly did an amazing job!
I was so happy and excited when I discovered this channel and I dare to say: primarily cause of your existence, I hope Eurovision will go on!
Looking forward to seeing you next year!
Sending you and everyone reading this lots of love from Croatia
P.S. Congratulations on the new arrival! Hope she'll be born before September 23rd because she'll be a Virgo as myself (not that I give a sh*t about horoscope, but it's a...fun fact?! 😉)
Meow back 😸... Truly appreciate the work you guys do as a fellow Eurofan from the U.S.
The way you pronounce Abba, falls down on that first syllable. That “ah” sound should not sound like the dental hygienist is working close to the back of your throat. The sound is closer to when you finally have a cool drink on a hot day (while reading that YA book on Eastern Europe). We won’t give up on you Matt.
😂
Surprisingly, I actually thinks this helps.
@@overthinkingit you’re very welcome. 😊 I’m a language teacher, so I’m glad that helps.
Sorry. The above is more negative than I intended. It was just I really wanted to promote the video to all the ABBA fan outlets (as I love both), but I knew the first criticism would be the pronunciation of the band name. Interestingly, you get it more right when you say ABBAtar (as the word avatar has the correct vowel).
Miau miau ❤ congratulations to you and your wife 🎉
Hey, thanks for the mention! Here's my recommendation for a summer reading about Yugoslavia. The two novels: "Fording the Stream of Consciousness" by Dubravka Ugrešić and "How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed" by Slavenka Drakulić. Bonus: This one isn't related to Yugoslavia, but it’s about the Baba Yaga myth (known as Babaroga or Baba Roga in the post-Yugoslav space): "Baba Yaga Laid an Egg" by Slavenka Drakulić.
Let's goooo, another new video about Eurovision! Boooo, having to wait till next year for more.
Congratulations on your impending child!! I hope the birth goes smoothly. Thank you both everyone for the AMAZING videos this year!
loved overthinking eurovision 2024!
There's a cool book just out by an artist that is a regular at my island in Croatia, and it documents a family from 1945 to 2022. What's interesting is that there's characters from the British army, because my island was used by the brits as a strategic position, and now we play cricket as a result of that. I'll keep an eye if it gets translated.
Thank you Overthinking it.
Here's to next year! ❤
The comment I made on your kiss vs abba video is one of my most well liked comments on youtube!
Thanks for watching all the Pokemon stuff, I respect your Pokemon expertise.
In Sweden, to pronounce Thomas G-son like you do, it would probably be spelled Thomas Dji-son
I totally disagree, it would also be spelled G:son, but the G has to stand for a name that you pronounce with "Dji". If for example Ludwig Göransson changed his last name to G:son, it would be pronounced like Matt B did.
And Ahbbah is the correct Swedish way to pronounce ABBA, not ÄBBA as they said in the video
Why would you even bother trying to teach the content creators how to pronounce Thomas G:son with a Swedish accent? I thought it was a bit of a know-it-all comment.

@@Zakarias89 This channel is all about overcorrecting stuff though
Happy to have been a small part of the community helping out this year. Would've joined in last year but I only really got into using discord this year so, you know :)
Good luck going forward and already looking forward to the podcast on Monday as well as any Eurovision madness that comes next.
congratulations matt and kristina! discovering this channel was one of the highlights of my eurovision year
I rarely comment, but I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all these video essays for me to obsess and fangirl over and use as source to bombard my friends with endless amounts of trivia. This Eurovision season has been so heartbreaking and I'm honestly so glad it's over. At this point, I'm not sure if I'll even watch next year's Eurovision. But what I do know is that I'll definitely watch your videos! And by the way, I'm really happy you corrected your mistakes in such a thorough way, in my opinion, that's one of the highest levels of credibility a source can have. I wish you so much luck with your personal goals this year, congratulations for the baby and good luck with the house! See you next year!
Honestly guys, I cannot thank you guys enough for these amazing videos. Sorry I haven't commented at all, but by god you have been hard at work with your research.
And its fine if you are correcting your mistakes. The internet is not perfect, fake news and all that lol.
Keep up the good work guys and see you all next year. Shame you'll be skipping JESC ;)
Edit: Congrats on the child :D
I subbed this year and I cant believe I didn't know about your channel before! Thanks so much, you two are legends 🙌
Congrats on your baby Matt ❤. And thank you peeps for your amazing videos 😊
Thank you ❤ cant wait for next year
Thank you for all your work this year. It's been absolutely the weirdest Eurovision year of my dozen watching (in some often unfun ways) but your videos always brought me back to what a unique, meaningful thing Eurovision is.
Congratulations on the fourthcoming baby and house! I hope everything goes wonderfully with both!
Oh, I’m gonna miss you guys! Only discovered this channel after ESC 2024 was over but think I have watched most of your videos from this year and some from the years before. I really enjoy your content which speaks to me a lot because it’s a nice mix of well researched, well presented “journalistic documentary quality” content, goofy humor and compassion. Good luck with new house and new baby - meow from Denmark!
A huge thank you to the Overthinking It team from my wife and I here in Australia! We love your nuanced and hilarious videos. Eurovision wouldn't be as enjoyable without you guys. Take a break and all the best for the new year!
Matt & Matt & friends: THANK YOU for all the effort you’ve put into making these amazing videos. Eurovision 2024 was a hell of a ride. The best part: I found this channel. 👏🏻💙
Thank you for providing some background audio for whenever I made ESC 24 fanart lol, gonna miss you guys
I can’t wait for more! Thank you guys ❤️❤️
At this point, I love you just enough to have tears in my eyes when Matt W (hey it's just like the Spice Girls) informed us they were having a baby! Congrats dude. And when I grow up I wanna be Matt B.
1:31 I'm that dude in Moldova🤣
Discovering this channel has been one of the best things that came out of this year's Eurovision experience for me. So happy to have found you guys, and the fact that you're so open to learning and sharing about the amazing layers and complexity that is eurosvision-related-topics is *chefs kiss*. Thank you for a great season!

Good luck in your next personal journeys, and will be happy whenever you come back. 😀
Congratulations Matt R!! All the best for you and your wife with the new chapter!
Thank you for the whole team! You guys really made it worth it for me this year. Here's to the future of the contest and for better times ahead!
My family thoroughly enjoys your channel. I loved getting some background on both of you here. Congratulations on the Baby!!! Buying a house is easy and fun, lol.

Congrats on all the big upcoming life events and on another year of Overthinking Eurovision! 🎉 This series of RUclips videos adds such a rich layer of enjoyment to watching the contest for me, as an American, and I hope you keep making these videos for many more years to come. Thank you! ❤🎉
Congratulations!! 🎉 So happy for you!
Excited for your 2025 videos! Really enjoyed this years ❤
Congratulations, M. and K.!
And thank you for sharing all your work and research with the world.

Very high-quality and research-oriented work, top-notch video editing. You have inspired me to start a channel as well.
The whole team, including the comments!, absolutely killed it this year. I look forward to your videos every year for valuable context and explanations, and I'll continue looking forward.
Congratulations matt!!
thank you for the incredible videos this season! the most informative and fun. see you next season 🌟
This video made me emotional; thank you all so much for the videos!
Thank you for the amazing videos! Meow!! See you next year!
Fantastic videos , great content, perfect delivery and numerous lol's from me.. 6 months effort maybe a strain on the family , but the most watchable channel I've seen on RUclips. Have been an avid fan of The Eurovision Song Contest(retro nod) since the early seventies, when life was in black and white and i was the village expert(nerd) for many years Thank you all for the effort and observations , roll on next year p.s. ( Joost was robbed and so were we with his absence from the final)
This channel is amazing, and the work you put into these videos and especially on research, is incredible and is setting a new standard! Thank you so much ❤❤❤
Bravo, bravo, bravo!
Best of luck to all of you in all of the adventures this year, we'll be right here waiting ❤!
And with that, another season of Overthinking Eurovision comes to a close! Thank you so much to Matt, Matt, and all the team behind this fabulous channel, you bring such joy to so many nerds like me. Congratulations again, and look forward to seeing you all next year (in between all the fun life stuff) ❤️
Thanks for all your efforts, really incredible!
Hi guys, there is a sample of your video on europapa in the end of joost's new song, luchtballon (a love ballad to eurovision). Cool. You're epic😊
Great job Mat, thank you for the fixed misstake video.
Hi Matt Belinkie, re a book about the war in the Balkans, I recommend Paper Planes by Allayne L. Webster. Yes, it is written for YA but honestly everyone should read it.
Thanks for the tip. YA is perfect for “lighter” summer reading.
While i don't doubt it is a good book, probably note it down after writing this, Matt B asked about Yugoslavia from before the war & after the war... (sorry ;-)
The country during Tito's reign, the 70s & 80s to be more precise.
It is rather curious that westerners could holiday there together with people from eastern Europe. And the story about Tito's letter to Stalin is simply marvelous. 🙂
I really enjoyed reading The Bridge over the Drina. It has that sweep of centuries that really gets behind and under how the folks there have come to see and think about their neighbors. Written by Yugoslav Nobel Prize awarded writer, Ivo Andric, I feel that’s definitely an “@overthinkingit” type book at a slender 314pages in paperback. [if anyone from or living in the region has a better recommendation, please share]
I've really really enjoyed watching the videos this season, love the presentation style. You changed my perspective on a number of songs, and I shared several with the team this year. Also professionally it's quite useful to have a few deep dive primers to watch during the two weeks on site. So thank you for your hard work, and honestly surprised you don't have more subs!
Thanks a lot! Did you work the broadcast? Must be so interesting to be part of a massive live event like that. Re: the number of subs, I don't really have a good sense about whether it's good or not, considering the niche content. Like even among Eurovision fans, this channel isn't for everyone. But we honestly don't do it to be popular / make money, it's a fun break from the stuff we ACTUALLY do to make money.
Overthinking Eurovision has been a huge bright spot in this year’s Eurovision season for me. Thank you all so much for what you and your team do! Seriously, y’all make such good breakdowns of the songs that let me learn so much about this competition. Finding this channel last year was a hell of a lucky break, especially as an American who is getting in on this stuff late and with a language barrier in between
Now knowing about Siberian Money Boss I feel like Nendest... is the equivalent of if Australia sent an entry themed around Democracy Manifest or the chk chk boom girl
We (sure) know nothing about (this) succulent Chinese meal.
Meow meow yall and congratulations
What a great video channel . Good job dudes
Awww... Congratulations on expecting your baby! This is great news! I'm gonna miss you 'till next time, but in the meantime, I only wish life for you guys and your families is amazing. Take care!
Thank you for the kind words!
Thanks to all of you researchers, background ppl and both Matts for your hard work this year, making this catastrophe of an ESC season much more bearable.
Enjoy your well-deserved rest, see y'all next year!
I love your channel
It was good seeing you guys again. The podcast was fun ages ago.
It’s STILL fun!
Thank you guys for all that you do! As a video producer and Eurovision enthusiast, I am both so grateful and utterly impressed by the quality of the content you put out. Congrats on your new additions in the coming year and can't wait to see y'all again in 2025 ✨
