  • Today on the show, Fr. Bonaventure Chapman joins me for a spirited discussion about our shared Anglican backgrounds, conversion to Catholicism, joining the Dominican order, the sovereignty of God, and film.
He'll be back for more, I hope--so write in your questions for next time! zac@creedalpodcast.com

When I was PCA, I was so depressed by the theology of Calvin and Luther. I was willing to tough it out, because I believed it was true, but the idea that I could be sent to hell, even though I was trying to serve God was awful. God just seemed capricious. Not to mention the whole view of our sinful nature-- like whether I'm praying or crossing the street I'm still sinning, and that I'm never transformed, my righteousness is just a legal declaration. I don't know how can Fr. Bonaventure can be so light hearted about it because to me it was devastating. Maybe if you have him on again you can ask him about some of these issues and how they play out in in our lives where the rubber meets the road, so to speak.

This legalism-induced fear is a great point you've brought up, Sheryl. When I have Fr. Bonaventure on again, I'll make sure to ask!

Fr Bonaventure has an "airy" way of talking - that's his style because he is very intellectual. I watch him a lot on Godsplaining. He is in my top three priests that I go to when having questions about Catholicism (I converted in 2020). The other two are Bishop Barron and Fr. Gregory Pine. Perhaps watching a few other interviews with him will help in answering these questions; another very good interview is on EWTN about his conversion (it aired in June 2017).
