I use to work on the pc9 production line at hawker Dehavilland in the late 80's doing electrical/ avionics wiring installations loved every minute of it, was out of the industry for 32 years before getting back into it again. A few months ago I was at yarrawonga doing a minor upgrade to a piper Dakota and as soon as I walked into the hangar to do the work I was greeted by none other than a pc9 on its transport cradle and it turns out that hte guy that owns the piper recently bought the pc9. If for some reason I ever get to work on this aircraft it will be like getting reacquainted with an old friend

A23-018 would have been the pick of the bunch. It was a hangar queen for a couple of years as it was constantly robbed of parts to keep other aircraft serviceable. When we (2FTS Maintenance Sqn) lost the bid to maintain the PC9s to Airflite, they refused to accept 018 as it had so many parts missing. There was another issue, a couple of work packs that document what had been "robbed" off the aircraft went missing. We eventually got her back together and they were looking for a "techo" to go back seat for the first test flight. I couldn't put my hand up quick enough. I have a photo of the aircraft being "Handed over" to Homer Constantinides (Managing Director Airflite) by Flt Lt Liegh Gordon (now an Air Vice Marshall I believe) with all the guys who put her back together in the background.

You picked a good test pilot in Boris. He flew the boxkite at Point Cook & pretty much nailed it. Not bad considering the ADF hadn't flown one since 1917!
Boris sure was the best man for the job! Exchange US Navy Test Pilot, U2 pilot, and a massive amount of hours in the PC-9 training and displaying the aircraft!

Now THAT brings back a lot of great memories! As an ATECH at 2FTS during the phase in of the PC-9/A in the early 90's I had the pleasure of a few back seat rides on test flights, including a little bit of stick time. And a great aircraft to work on, as well. Great days.

I worked on the Wamira which was going to be the Australian designed and built basic trainer until the government dropped the Wamira for the PC9. She's certainly a beautiful bird.
Fascinating, John. Yes, the PC-9 is a bit slicker than the Wamira, but it's a shame we didn't build our own trainers in Australia. Great to hear you were involved in the project!

Deactivated seat or not, Boris would have still been reaching for the seat pin on the canopy as soon as he taxied off the runway. Would be so strange suddenly unlearning such well-drilled habit patterns (Not to mention the lack of mask). So familiar, yet so off putting.

A friend of ourr had one of these on a "ready to go in an hour" standby many years ago. Excellent high performance trainer and worth having as a civilian. Awesome.

Great to see. I’d be interested to know if the ejection seats are live or not? Also if the restriction on airspeed to 250 knots is a requirement for this aircraft because of its warbird status or if it’s just to minimise fatigue on the airframe and engine?
Thanks, Paul. We have our seats disarmed. With such a reliable engine, we don't see the need. 250 Knots limit was because of the airspace in which the plane was flown.
Is that your hangar at Wangaratta? I've been there a few times (Alpine Aviation for annual inspections) and heard how there were some cool warbirds kept there. It had never occurred to me that this was you?!? Great stuff!
Hopefully, most of them are good ones! We can guarantee that our time flying now will be very low-stress compared to all of you guys going through training!
wonder what the diff between the PC-9 and the T-6B, performance wise. never got to fly either because TW5 had the T34C, and I never made it back in time.
Not sure sorry mate! We had a look at one at Oshkosh and there is a lot of differences we could see, but not sure about how they different they are to fly.
Hey Tim, no we aren't running the seats live in ours. We don't see the need with such a reliable engine. We are not running oxygen at this stage for simplicity, will probably look into this in the future.
How big a drawback are the ejection seats for civilian flying? Are they de-activated? If not, is training necessary in their use? How about maintenance on them? Are technicians/parts available?

Thanks for checking it out, David! We mostly use music in the clips where we can't record audio. For all the air-to-air shots, we cannot capture the plane's audio we are filming as the cameras only pick up the plane we are filming in (in this case the cabin drone inside an RV-10). If we were to stick a microphone out the plane window at our flying speeds, it would only record unuseable wind noise. Hopefully this explains why we use music.
@@davewatson2124 Hahahaha, unfortunately as we ran out of the chase plane to film the landing the airport security stopped us and blocked our view. A little bit frustrating but glad we manged to capture all most all of the first flight including the air-2-air footage.
